a must-have-book
this was my first dollshousebook ever, and still is my most favorite one, very claer instructions-foto's.

In a class by itself.
The only book that shows you how to create luxurious Colefax & Fowler interiors in miniature. 'The Yellow Drawing Room' is a superb variant of Nancy Lancaster's famous, full-scale classic. If you like stately English houses, this book is a Must. Not a book for beginners.

A Must for the Do-It-Yourself Miniaturist
Jessica Ridley has miniatures in her genes. After all, her grandfather was the designer and builder of Queen Mary's Dollhouse. :-) She is a miniaturist and faux painting artist who incorporates her specialty in her projects, giving the reader alternatives to the usual approach to dollhouse decorating -- namely siding for the exterior and wallpaper for the interior.

She teaches techniques for faux finishes, customizing and building furniture and accessories, as well as using interesting and unusual materials. The instructions are illustrated with plenty of color photographs, so you can see how the project looks at the different stages.

I highly recommend this book because I think that it stirs up your creative juices and inspires the miniaturist to try something new and personalized in their projects, while at the same time saving money. Who could ask for more!

"A feeling of dread came over Jack.

'What if...' he said. 'What if...'

In the distance, a tree suddenly burst into flames.

'We're looking at a wildfire!' he said."

On a magical mission from the mysterious tree house near their home in Frog Creek, Pennsylvania, Jack and his sister Annie find themselves in the wilds of Australia during a drought. Things heat up pretty quickly for this adventuresome pair, as what initially appears to be a campfire turns into something a lot more frightening. Meanwhile, one exotic animal after another crosses their paths, from koalas to kookaburras to kangaroos. In previous episodes of the Magic Tree House series, Jack and Annie found three of the four gifts they must receive in order to free an enchanted dog from a spell. Now they must track down "a gift from a kangaroo." But can they find this gift before the forest--and all its furry and feathered residents--burns up?

This enormously popular series by award-winning author Mary Pope Osborne is full of thrills and enchantment. She manages to infuse each easy-to-read chapter book with heaps of historical, cultural, and geographical information, without ever missing a beat. (Ages 6 to 10) --Emilie Coulter

Longest and best adventure Jack and Annie have had!
"Dingoes At Dinnertime" is the book where they free Teddy from his spell, as you probably know already. It all starts when Annie hears Teddy's barking, then they go to the tree house, go to Australia, and then begin their adventure. It's too much to say, but you can't miss this one. So read this one and enjoy it!!!

Almost The Greatest Book I've Ever Read
I thought this was the greatest adventure that Jack and Annie ever had so far. I liked it because therer was a lot of action and it was fun to read. This is my second-favorite series of books. I like them even more than Goosebumps. It would be pretty hard to get better than Magic Treehouse, even though I like Harry Potter better, but that's all.

Dingoes at Dinnertime
I was almost as excited as my 8 year old daughter when she finished reading this wonderous adventure, completing the four part series to break Teddy's spell. It had been tough getting her to read, until I found the Magic Tree House series. She really enjoyed the adventure and the involvement of animals as characters in the story. I like the fact that at the end of each story is "More Facts for You and Jack" - reinforcing the educational elements of the story.

This book is a good book.I learned alot about dinosaurs. This book inspired me to love and study dinosaurs. Now everybody says I'm crazy for dinosaurs! This book talks about plant eaters and meat eaters. It has pictures of dinosaur skelatons. It has lots of theries on how the dinosaurs disapeard. So read it!

I Love the Magic Tree House Series!
This is my favorite book in the whole Magic Tree House series, because they wrote about a new dinosaur called Giganotosaurus. It was even bigger than T-Rex, and if they find more fossils of Giganotosaurus, it will be the king of dinosaurs. I think it was funny when Annie pretended to be Dromiceiomimus because she looked silly with huge eyes!

Fun, entertaining and educational.
What a wonderful idea. Mary Pope and Will Osborne share the research that they put in to writing "Dinosaurs Before Dark" with their readers in a fun and entertaining way. My 8-year old daughter has devoured this book and "Knights and Castles : A Nonfiction Companion to the Knight at Dawn". These books are not only instructing her on the particular subject of each book, but they are also teaching her how to do research on her own. They also build vocabulary and fill her head with wonderous thoughts and questions. I highly recommend this series to every young reader and their parents.

Dream-House
Artist, architect, and filmmaker Fu-Ding Cheng wrote and illustrated Dream-House, based on his award-winning film, Spirit of the Dream-House. A part of Hampton Roads' Young Spirit Books series for children, Dream-House, the story of a "house that loved, lost, and loved again," will charm children of all ages.

The story begins with a house made of dreams, which became a home when the right family moved in. It loves giving shelter and protecting the family from the weather, even when Billy, the youngest member, accidently hits a baseball through the picture window. Billy makes it up to the house later, however, when it's threatened by a wildfire and he saves it from the flames with a water hose.

Eventually Billy grew up, married, and raised a new family in the house. But things change as time passes. Billy's children grew up and left, and he put the old house up for sale. Over the years, it fell into disrepair. At first the house was frightened at its destruction, "then a wonderful thing happened. The rain washed my sorrows away, the sun warmed up my heart, and the wind blew my imagination free."

Then the house remembered that it was made of dreams, and that if it could "just let of my old walls," it could find a new family to love and become a home once again. Which is exactly what it did.

The left-hand pages include three to four lines of text, embellished with a small illustration. Detailed, full-size drawings in color grace the right-hand pages.

Dream-House is "an enchanting, timeless story about rebirth and the mysterious power of love . . . that will both delight and enlighten readers of all ages." Purchase a copy for every child you know, including the one within you.

Invites parents and kids to share the story
Dream-House will invite parents and kids to share the story of the Dream House, a house made of dreams and love. Large print makes it easy for kids to follow along in a warm story of how a house watches its occupants grow up and grow older with family and friends within its walls.

Mind-expanding, heart-expanding
Well, we all have to live somewhere, but after reading Cheng's book you'll never again think of a house as a mere structure. From his lovingly cosmic perspective, the house exists outside of time and space. Although it is something larger than we realize, it embraces all the small circumstances of our lives; on the level of our hearts and our dreams, it finds us as much as we find it. By implication, this vision can be applied to all the allegedly mundane structures in which we live. If you want to raise your child (or yourself) in an atmosphere of expanding heart and mind, Cheng's lovely story and ravishing pictures are a good place to start.

A helpful book
If you have just started your own home and you feel that you are standing at the bottom of a mountain not knowing where to start cleaning from, then you should get this book. I wish I had this book when I first moved to my own house. It would save me time and also I wouldn't be so much stressed everytime I needed to clean (that's excausting myself twice a week).

The book begins with instructions as to how to organize your cleaning schedule, what should your priority be, and what should be the last thing to do. And clean it like a pro, fast & right! Also, how to get rid of your clutter once and for all. It gives you advise as to what kind of detergents you should use, which cleaners are hazardous, which ones you should avoid and why. What I liked here, is How to hunt microbes (!)

In part two, it has an A-Z reference with everything you can find in a house, and how to clean it, so when you have a problem with a particular item, you don't just scroll up and down to find it, the A-Z makes it so easy.

Part three, again it's an A-Z rundown of everything you will need to know about. In this part, it gives further and more detailed information about cleaners as well as tools for cleaning.

Great Resource
This really isn't the type of book you sit down and read. It is the type of book you keep around for reference. Having said that though, I did sit down and page through this book and go many ideas regarding how to clean things that i thought I was doing a find job cleaning. What I learned, however, is that there might be a better way, a safer way, a less damaging way to clean something.

The author went right to the source of experts for cleaning directions. Want to clean a golf ball, crayons off a wall, hard water spots in a shower? Here is the way. Want to take care of cooking odors, clean a tuba, make a broom last longer? Here is the way.

Excellent resource.
Enjoy.

Here's why this one STANDS APART from similar books:
The author did her research and asked experts how to clean items she wasn't familiar with. As an example, she goes straight to the team leader of specifications for Bowling Balls to find out how to clean a bowling balls and finds out what substances could actually hurt them. Covers both the basics (upholstery, stuffed animals, vases, wallpaper) and the more unique items (whirlpools, taxidermy items, motorcycles). I'd be surprised if the reader didn't find new information in this one!

Interesting Presentation
This is a bite-sized portion of feng-shui, presented in a visually-appealing way. First, it describes how to analyze your living space in order to see which part of it is about family, which area is about work, which area is about relationships etc.. (there are 8 areas).

Then, it sets that aside basically, and looks at each type of room. For the hallway, for instance, it has 2 diagrams: bad energy flow and good energy flow. Then it describes in detail the particular types of accumulations that tend to build up in hallways, and the ways in which those accumulations generate energy gridlock. And it gives examples of positive organizations for a typical hallway, in which the energy can flow freely. It provides cures for typical energy traps. And even gives optimal colors etc.. for each type of room.

The specificity provided in the book is very useful!

Clearing clutter works
I read this book and a similar book back in March 2002. The end of the year is near and many positive changes have happened in my life. Even though I wasn't looking for a job change, I was contacted by a headhunter for a new job that included more money; took a 3 week vacation to Australia during my transition; bought a new car and just closed escrow on a new condo. I certainly didn't think I needed a total change in my life when I read the book. The concepts simply made perfect sense and I was open to what the universe would bring me.

positive life changer
This book is a fabulous tool for anyone who develops attachments with their belongings and has a hard time deciding what to get rid of. Mary Lambert's book taught me to be in control of my stuff, rather than letting my stuff be in control of me. Following the suggestions in her book, my home has transformed, and in turn, so has a part of myself. Since I have followed the "clutter-clearing" tips she offers, I feel a giant weight lifted off my shoulders. It is a very liberating feeling to be turned from a "pack-rat" into a "clutter-combator". I highly recommend this book!

just a little reassurance
This is a good choice if you feel skittish about following thru with the largest transaction in your life. Much of this book didn't apply to me because I'm buying just land in NC with cash --a transaction that's much simplified from the stuff she covers here. Much is made of escrow, but in NC, as far as I can tell, escrow is not as central to the closing process. There is an appendix on the differences between the closing procedures between all of the US states, but it would be nice if this was beefed out a little more. Still worth it, comprehensive, and good links to web resources.

The Best Guide
"This book has all the information anyone needs for all aspects of a closing. It tells you the right questions to ask, when to ask them, and includes helpful checklists, which are really user-friendly. I used this personally in my latest closing, and it was the best guide I could have had. The list of documents needed to be sure the closing goes smoothly was great. Sandy Gadow is the leading author and expert on closings and escrow and I appreciated the easy to read style of her book. Worth buying this book!"

The Complete Guide to Your Real Estate Closing
I really enjoyed this book. The book is written very clearly, with great illustrations and examples. The easy to understand way in which closing was explained made sense and was easy to follow. I have read many real estate books, but never one written by a closing professional. Someone who really knows the subject matter from first hand experience. This book prepared me for what to expect at closing, what fees I was allowed to question and how to negotiate lower closing costs. I realized that settlement errors just don't happen at the mortgage level, they also happen at the title company. This book delivered on it's title. It really is a complete guide and a handy reference book. I went to closing with less worry and more confidence than ever before. I understood what I was doing and what to question. This is the only book I could find that really helps you with the final and most critical part of a real estate purchase (or sale).

The best book out there
I would venture that the authors have forgotten more about toilets than most of the rest of us will ever know. There is no possible toilet configuration that does not receive at least cursory discussion. I only have 2 complaints about the book, both of them minor. First there were a couple of systems that I felt were described incompletely and critiqued a bit unfairly. Second, much of the book seemed to be a compilation of other writings without a lot of editing. Consequently there is significant repetition, and a presentation of information that is sometimes slightly disorganized and confusing.

I definitely think that the book is worth reading.

Most complete and credible book on the topic
After reading a couple of books about composting toilets and graywater systems that were either suspiciously poetic or a little too humorous, I was happy to find this book.

As someone who needs a variety of systems for a variety of high-use sites, I was glad to find a book that deals with this topic in technically and responsibly (in terms of public health). I showed this book to my local health agent, and he was far more amenable to permiting an "experimental system" afterwards, saving me a lot of money.

Also, after experimenting with various systems over the years, I am aware that some systems still described in books and magazines just don't work well. The authors of this book have apparently had the same experience, and I appreciate their researching this so completely.

Impressive, comprehensive, reader friendly, practical.
The Composting Toilet System Book is an impressive, comprehensive, reader friendly, and practical guide to choosing, planning and maintaining composting toilet systems for those seeking an alternative to traditional sewer and septic tank systems. David Del Porto and Carol Steinfeld collaborate to explain the technologies, sources, applications, graywater issues, and regulations relevant to a composting toilet system for the home, whether manufactured or site-built. Highly recommended.

Crisis of the House Divided: An Interpretation of the Issues in the Lincoln-Douglas Debates
Published in Paperback by University of Washington Press (April, 1973)
Author: Harry V. Jaffa
Amazon base price: $4.95
Used price: $11.11
Average review score:

Stunningly great book on Lincoln
For an account of Lincoln's thought (as well as Douglas') that serves to the credit of both of them, read this book. One of the finest books I have ever read, there are some chapters on Lincoln's thought that you will read time and time again. My copy of the book is marked up with great quotes where Harry Jaffa shows great insight into the tension and wonder that is the democratic thought of Abraham Lincoln, quite possibly the greatest democratic leader in history. This book is a must read for anyone who wants to know about the mind of Lincoln before the Civil War.

The one to read
If you want to read one book about Lincoln's thought, this is the one to read. The first part of the book, which takes Douglas seriously and states the strongest case for him, is historically dense and may be difficult for most readers. But keep going, because the payoff will be great. There follow chapters on two of Lincoln's early speeches. Jaffa's analysis here is brilliant, though perhaps a bit far-fetched. In the final part of the book, Jaffa states the case for Lincoln against Douglas. This part is rich in its ideas, rigorous in its reasoning, and eloquent to the point of being inspirational. (By the way, if you want to read one biography of Lincoln, I'd recommend the one by Lord Charnwood. Though written almost a century ago and therefore not up to date on all the details of historical scholarship, it is judicious throughout and beautifully written.)

The Second American Founding
Perhaps the most interesting thing about Jaffa is that he wrote Goldwater's famous "moderation in the defense of freedom is no virtue" speech. If you go back and read the speech (and it is on the web, of course), it echoes both the Old Testament ("our fathers") and Lincoln. I suspect he would agree with the man who told me that Lincoln is the greatest prose stylish in the English language. As for the book, Jaffa interprets the civil war as the second, and genuine, founding of the American republic, and precisely because the principle of the Declaration, equality, was written not in ink but blood (Jaffa has his own brand of Lincolnian Christianity). Lincoln, by this reading, belongs to the "tribe of the eagle and the lion" and was neither Caesar nor Brutus but possessed the best qualities of both. To understand that part of Jaffa's interpretation, you would have to read his treatment of Shakespeare. As for the Lincoln-Douglas debates, Jaffa stages Douglas as Thrasymachus and Lincoln--surprise, surprise--as Socrates.
