Wonderful reference!
This is the review of Robert C. Renneberg's book The Winchester Model 94: The First 100 Years" that I wrote for Bullet 'N Press in December 2002.

In production for over one hundred years, and with over seven and one half million of these rifles produced so far, there isn't any question that the most popular deer rifle in America is the Winchester Model 1894, and that it has held that favorite spot for quite some time.

The author begins with a concise, accurate history of this timeless lever action that starts with it's designer John Moses Browning and carries right up through the post 1964 models, the commemoratives and the latest angle eject 94's. Every aspect of the 1894 is covered; engineering changes, alterations, finishes, calibers and wood, often in great detail. The components, and variations thereof, are graphically presented with very clear close-up black and white photography. Collectors love it when information is offered to them in such a way that it quickly answers all their questions. So often I have been asked "Can you show me what to look for with such and such a detail, so I will know what I am buying?". This is that book for the Winchester 1894, it answers questions quickly and it shows you what and where.

Fanciers of the Winchester Model 1894 will be absolutely delighted with what is in this book for it truly gives you "everything you ever wanted to know about the 1894 Winchester", as well as covering a lot of questions you probably wouldn't have thought to ask. I also enjoyed seeing the excerpts from early 20th century Winchester salesman's catalogs, where for instance, a standard 38-55 caliber carbine could be had for the hefty sum of $17.50!

This reviewer was very impressed with the large amount of well presented information and the attention that is given to accurate photographic illustration. The book was a joy to read and I would highly recommend it for the library of anyone who collects or who simply enjoys Winchester's wonderful Model 1894.

Collector Resource Book
I have read a number of books on Winchester Firearms. I especially liked this one. Anyone who reads this book will learn something new.

Things I picked up.

Until now Winchester never produced a factory 410 guage lever action shotgun.

Half Octagon/ Half Round Carbines are very rare. Take a look
at the Lone Star Commemorative.

READ THIS BOOK
I purchased my Winchester Model 94AE Trapper a couple of weeks before I purchased this book. As a first-time rifle owner, the fun I get from reading this book is second only to the feeling I get from hefting my new rifle. Being able to benefit from the incredibly detailed research that went into making this book is like receiving a great gift. Next week is my first visit to the rifle range. Reading this incredible book will make the experience even more fun than I anticipate. If you want to know about your Model 94, READ THIS BOOK.

Stylishly Ethical Living
Today, around 5 million people on Earth work and live in buildings made of adobe, stone, rammed earth, straw bale, cob, wattle and daub and so forth. That is, most of our planetary brothers and sisters live in earthen houses that rely on renewable human labor and local resources like mud, straw, rock and tree. These houses are less energy intensive, more durable, and are often more esthetically pleasing than so-called "modern" homes, as this book shows.

"The Art of Natural Building" questions the environmental responsibility of a 5,000-sq-foot, 500,000-dollar house. As more and more people begin to make the kind of money it takes to buy their own American Dream house, we must question the feasibility our of contemporary building practices. Would it be possible cover the globe with modern homes? Building companies certainly think so, but aside from what a project of this immensity what mean environmentally, the resources are simply not available.

There is simply not enough lumber, brick, cement, and processed material to go around. Our building industry would gladly sell us into oblivion if it meant a buck or two in the short-haul, but we need to get away from this kind of thinking. We also need to consider the environmental impacts of our current practices. What are these impacts?

As this book reminds us, buildings already account for one quarter of the world's wood harvest, two-fifths of its material and energy use, and one-six of its fresh water usage. In the past 100 years the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has risen 27 percent, one-quarter of which has come the burning of fossil fuels just to provide energy for buildings. During the same period, the world lost more than 20 percent of its forest. Quite simply, our building philosophy is not sustainable; and with a populaiton of 6 billion rising at an incredible rate every year, reconstruction of this philosophy becomes all the more timely and important.

We can start by dropping out of the rat race and getting our hands dirty. Natural building is much more affordable, durable, environmentally responsible and estheticly pleasing than the track homes and skyscrapers advancing on the horizon. We can also avoid the loan-mortgage game which weds us to unfulfilling job and Sisyphus-like existence. We can create spaces that are non-toxic, unique, and ecologically sound. And perhaps most importantly, we can reconnect with Earth and the spirit of artisanship.

Along with the philosophy, you will discover a veritable treasure trove of natural building styles and ideas, from the radically new and innovative - like concept "earthship" - to the ancient and elegant, such as the living roof pictured on the cover. Architects need not apply, nor must you be good with your hands to fashion your own natural house. I consider myself very fortunate to have seen this book before investing in a home of my own. Like many people, I might have ended up working the rest of my life to pay for "a house without a clue."

By far and away, this is one of the most important books I have ever read. Philosophers dabble with theories of justice, beauty and truth, but with this book you will discover how all of these ideas can be BUILT into the very structure and fabric of your life. You will discover the ethics and aesthetics of building design and ecological living.

Filled to the brim with great references, links and some amazing photographs to stimulate your right brain, "The Art of Natural Building" is a must for anybody interested in saving the planet and saving a little money at the same time. The ultimate ecological building encyclopedia! A must read for all dwelling creatures.

Art of Natural Building
This is a great place to start your research if you are interested in natural building. Web sites, resorce books and organizations are listed at the end of each chapter. This book started my career in natural home building.

A very Good taste.
This book gives you a very good taste of all the natural alternative building techniques, and also where to find out more information on them. This is an excellent book for you to start researching all the different alternative building techniques or if your already well read on the subject it may introduce you to some new techniques or be a good refresher on the subject.

I use it for Pre-Cana Counseling
As a Catholic priest, I use this book for Pre-Cana (before you get married)counseling. I think it's the best I've seen, and I've recommended it to my Bishop to be used in the curriculum of our seminary. Would that people read this before they got married ~ also good as an eye opener if you are married, and for no matter how long. As the Chairman of the Board of Examining Chaplains for my diocese (who oversees academic stuff before a man is considered for ordination), I'll tell you that this book will be required reading for any man before he becomes a priest with pastoral cares.
Bravo!!!

Run, don't walk, and get this book
This is one unbelievably fantastic book. Wangerin is a wonderful storyteller. This book stands head and shoulders above other Christian books about marriage. The chapters on forgiveness are incredible. He is transparent and real as he shares from his own marriage. Use it to make your own marriage stronger. Give it to friends, those married and those contemplating marriage.

I've read many books on marriage. This one is at the top of my list.

About as good as it gets....
Wangerin's book feels like the smell of fresh-baked bread: Yeasty, homey, delicious, incredibly satisfying, and sweet without being saccharine, and with honesty, compassion, and real story enough in it to tear open with your teeth like a fine, chewy crust.

In a world of relationship books with all the nutritional value of paper (too many of them Christian-oriented) Wangerin's book stands out like a plate of that fresh-baked bread and a slab of sweet yellow butter.

This is not simply a useful and informative book about the innumerable uses for good old baking soda, saving tons of money, and in the process not harming the environment. It is also entertaining and sometimes downright funny--it would be a great gift for anyone, including yourself. I expect that Vicki Lansky had a blast putting this book together, and her enthusiasm is evident in the text.

A money-saving compilation of household suggestions
Written by Vicki Lansky (a contributing editor to "Family Circle" magazine), Baking Soda: Over 500 Fabulous, Fun & Frugal Uses You've Probably Never Thought Of is a handy householder's tip guide filled from cover to cover with useful applications for baking soda. Ranging from cooking tips, to kitchen care and cleaning, to personal hygiene, doing laundry, and so much more, Baking Soda is enthusiastically recommended as a practical, informative, "user friendly" and money-saving compilation of household suggestions.

Baking Soda in Bulk
My grandmother buys baking soda in bulk and loves using it, so I bought this book for her one Christmas. She seems to like the book and has been able to use many of the suggestions. One of the tips that she found helpful was using baking soda for cleaning the oven. Baking soda can provide a natural alternative to many other products. This book can be an inexpensive gift or a helping hand for you.

The wonders of Baking Soda
I never really used baking soda, until I've read how every day things could be harmful, from soap to household cleaners. This book is so informative, who knew that you could use baking soda as deoderant or that it could be a fabric softner, and a drain cleaner?

I've tried many of the suggestions on this book and they work, they really work! Baking soda is not only for baking but for cleaning so many things. Baking soda works great as a fabric softener, I've tried it and my clothes came out very soft and much cleaner!

Very informative, this book is small about 100 something pages, but filled with so many tips, its worth the money. Using baking soda as a cleaner is frugal and much more better for your health and the environment.

Many household cleaners now contain chemicals that are toxic to the body; and baking soda is very environmental friendly, frugal, and fun to use, and it really works as a cleaner.

Who knew?
Who knew that Akron, Ohio used to be the toy marble capital of the world? Or that sauerkraut balls are the official food? Did you know that Akron is the original home of the rock group Devo, singer Chrissie Hynde, the National Inventors Hall of Fame, nationally recognized artist Don Drumm, and much more. I'll bet Junior League of Akron member and Olympic skater Carol Heiss Jenkins knows. So will you if you invest in this most excellent cookbook. Delicious recipes abound in this hard-bound cookbook artfully named Beginnings not only for the Akron snippets, but for the appetizers it features. It would make a perfect gift for anyone. And you can feel good about buying it since profits benefit the countless good works of the Junior League of Akron. I love it!

The Perfect Beginning
What a great book for the home. I seem to turn to it more often than not, especially when bringing a dish to the home of a friend. It has recipes for every occasion and then some. There are fun tidbits that provide great insight to the town where the recipes were prepared. This book is a must for any kitchen!!!

Easy & Appealing
As an avid collector of cookbooks, it's great to have one book solely devoted to appetizers. Rather than sorting through numerous books for recipes, Beginnings makes it easy to find ones just right for the event. The recipes range from easy to just a bit more special, but none are beyond the reach of the average cook. Strongly flavored by the midwest, this is a great book for anyone's collection!

A Novel to Savor
I savored each page of this novel, reading many sentences over and over again. The experience was delicious, transporting, expansive, and playful. Diane Frank's sentences are not merely a way to find out what happens next or even a display of her mastery of language (although they do both of these things in a compelling way), but the sentences themselves are like magic spells. Their poetic imagery worked on me like a snake charmer's music. They took me in new directions, regardless of my own nature or intentions. Yukiko, the geisha, is almost angelic in her subtlety, yet, at the same time, strikingly down-to-earth and honest. For me, she began as a stranger and, in the end, became an unexpected mentor, teasing me to live on the lyrical plane she inhabits. Diane Frank put her soul into this story and, in the process of writing it, honed each sentence into fine art.

Prose poem
This is a lyrical story of a young woman's growth to maturity and spiritual awakening. It's all poetry because the main character thinks in poetic images - all the time. The story is intense, soothing, and there are many unexpected twists and turns. Read it.

Fascinating, hypnotic reading
I had the pleasure of hearing Diane Frank perform a reading of this book and found myself hypnotized by the story. Not only is the book enjoyable and entertaining, it unveils the incredible, exotic flavor of geisha society. Every detail is delicately described by the author, who is a poet as well. You really feel as though you are there.

Very nice, little known translation.
A nice alternate translation, with updated, but not necessarily "Modern" english.

the most correct word of the GOD of Israel translated! :)
the last,oh say 1800 years or so,
the church has made MANY and SERIOUS translation mistakes.
you see,the church dosen't translate the original versions of a document.oh no no no,they translate the TRANSLATED version of a document, which goes on and on until the final "translation" doesn't even resemble the original!
this has given the rise to many false celebrations,
which not only are not written about in the holy scripture,
but which are directly in contrast to GOD's perfect and DIVINE WILL!
i am of course talking about "christemasse" "all hallows eve" "ascension of the virgin" and "easter" (named after the pagan goddesses, ishtar and astarte!!).
however,that's another story...
the point is,holidays such as "long friday" "ash wednesday" and other days created in memory of the life of the christ arent written about in the bible!
it may seem like it,
but where it says "on the first day of the week" in RSV luke 24,
it actually says "on the first of the sabbaths" in young's literal translation!
this tells us that our saviour jesus/JESHUA ben Joseph was resurrected by the power of the almighty one on a sabbath,
a saturday!
and since the revival on
"sunday"is the main reason christians so wickedly ignore the DIVINE AND HOLY commandment to keep the sabbath,
they must now change and keep the sabbath that GOD commands!
praise be to youngs literal translation!

YLT
Thanks be to the Lord God for a second English translation Bible with the Textus Receptus-based New Testament.

Together with Mr J.P. Green's LITV, it has formed "the tripartite" for this reviewer, viz. KJV-LITV-YLT.

Feedback:
Has unusual binding for such a thick 'book'- looks dangerously weak.
It being paperback may well limit its robustness.
The font size is small, tough on the eyes truly.

not withstanding the its physical form, precious 66 books to possess & read.

may the authorized publisher see this review and give us a bigger font and leather bound version very soon.

Everything you always wanted to know about the White House!
The absolutely facinating lives of two women who devoted their lives to serving the presidents and their families. It's not exactly a weekend read, but well worth your time. I mean, how else would you find out one of our distiinguished presidents got stuck in the bathtub? Wish the television mini-series was available on video or DVD.

Backstairs at the White House
I read this book for the first time in junior high school and fell totally under its spell. I now own a very tattered paperback which I have read many, many times. No matter how many times I read this book, I find something that I didn't in a previous read. You really get caught up in the lives of Maggie, Lillian, Mercer, Mays, Jackson and all the rest. To me, this is the mark of a great author. I waited anxiously, fearing that it could never equal the book, when the mini-series came out and was delighted all over again. If you are a reader of history or just want a plain good read, this book is for you. I keep hoping that sometime the mini-series will be available for purchase on VHS or DVD.

Backstairs at the White House
This book is a fascinating look at the people who are a integral part of the White House-- the staff and the occupants. Based on the lives of Lilian Rogers Parks and her daughter, it presents the everyday happenings in this historical house from the viewpoint of the staff. This historical novel is filled with personal memories, touching stories, humorous quips, and some sad moments. After enjoying it, the reader will feel as if they have spent time in the White House themselves.

Well, maybe not EVERY need
I saw this book on a rack at the grocery store. Thought it might come in handy. So I picked it up. It covers a lot of territory, although there are some odd phrases, arcane scripture, and typos that will leave you scratching your head. But don't approach the book as a verbatim guide. These aren't Hail Mary's you're praying here. You'll have to take some of the prayers and tailor them to your own situation. The prayer for the newborn baby, for example, is written from the parent's point of view. So if you are praying for a new nephew or niece, you'll need to tweak it. Also, a lot of the prayers are very similar. And many of the prayers seem geared toward people who are already "super-Christians." A few more prayers for us "seekers" and sinners would have been nice. I also wish this book had more prayers that could be said on behalf of other people. And surprisingly, there are no prayers for meals in the book. But enough about what the book lacks. All in all, it's good. I recommend it. As I said, it covers a lot of territory. Just don't expect it to cover _every_ need. You'll have to learn to pray on your own. And this book can help.

Just what I needed!!!
I studied the references. To God be the glory-- I prayed. I believed. I received!!!

There's a wonderful prayer for everything.
This is a fabulous book. I used to always wonder how to pray to be heard. I learned that praying using the word in your prayer is most effective. This book has a prayer for everything, it has a great index in front, listing any topic you want to pray about. Then it has a Prayer that makes you feel great. I love it, in fact I am getting copies for poeple I care about. Don't miss it if you have ever wondered how to pray.
