Very cool
This is a very cool book for people who love their stuff. The homes are in lots of different styles. What I really like is the attitude of the book which is a bit about breaking the rules instead of having boring, picture-perfect rooms. A very refreshing take on design today.

I totally love this book
if you are a collector, you will love this book as much as we do. It is intriguing to see how other people decorate with their collections. The book features styles that go from modern to traditional. I've shared this book with my design clients to show them that they can edit and organize their favorite collectibles to create well-designed rooms. Lots of good design information here plus tips on specific hot collectibles. This book is a real find.

A great book about breaking the rules
This is a great book about breaking all the so-called decorating rules. This book shows one do-your-own-thing home after another, each filled with its own unique collectibles. There's everything from fine (and pricey) Italian glassware to mid-century modern and tramp art and colonial treasures. And more. There is a lot in the book on how to decorate with and display collections. An interesting book packed with great photos and information.

Excellent book
This is an essential book for anyone working on a project that requires complex shaping of wood. The book contains excellent colour foto's clearly demonstrating each technique. I was very impressed with the carving of the ball and claw foot. This is a consice book and the author goes straight to the point without any unnecessary clutter.

If you are interested in building the finest pieces
This book covers some areas that will enable you to build some of the finest pieces of woodworking and furniture. For example a step by step explanation of how to create a flaming finial, to top off your best projects is illustrated: From the beginning of turning it on a lathe, to the first level of carving the flutes, to each successive layer. The one he creates out of walnut is the style that I like the most. Additionally making a claw foot, is well illustrated, just the same.
This book does not cover the basics, so one to add to your collection, as either a hopeful, or an advanced course of applications. It is a motivator, because he shows you the kind of work, that inspires us into higher levels in the art form.
Well illustrated, with clear photographs and descriptions. All in all a 5 star book, you will want to feature it on your book shelf, and in the works you will be motivated and instructed to create.

Great Book
This is great, one of the favorite woodworking books I own, and I own quite a few.

A must-have on any expatriate's bookshelf
A must-have on the bookshelf of any future or current expatriate. With wisdom, insight, experience, and brimming with optimism, it covers all the bases from the practical to the emotional of moving and thriving abroad. You can't go wrong as this "Dr. Spock for Expatriates" steers you through all the important decisions you will need to make and helps you consider things you might otherwise neglect. I especially liked the sections on children, culture shock, and spouses. One feature of this book that I particularly enjoyed was that it was loaded with relevant anecdotes from expatriates from all over the world living in all sorts of countries.

Buy 2 copies of Expert Expatriate
Save yourself the trouble of placing a second order and get 2 copies to begin with. You'll want one for yourself and inevitably you'll meet up with someone who you want to give a copy. This book is very readable and full of tips and practical advice for preparing for a relocation...and for coping once you arrive. Especially for first time expats, the authors will help you anticipate (and deal with) many of the challenges that could otherwise throw most of us for a loop. Alot is common sense advice but when you are faced with the many decisions involved in an international move, clearly writtten common sense advice helps. Living overseas can be fabulous if you don't get overwhelmed. The Hess-Linderman book will help you get settled and also help the new friends that you will be meeting - take an extra copy with you to give away.

Packed with Knowledge!
Melissa Brayer Hess and Patricia Linderman's indispensable book covers all the practical aspects of adjusting to life in a foreign country. They pay particular attention to factors that can help or hinder an expatriot's adjustment. Every chapter includes short, personal sidebars recounting the experiences of those who've lived and worked abroad, an addition which brings the book to life with insightful, useful and often hilarious detail. We from getAbstract recommend this book to anyone who is considering relocation to another country. To be at home anywhere on the globe, supplement it with a couple of books about the specific country where you are going. Pay attention to the advice about planning ahead, then get your shots, tuck your passport in your pocket and head for the airport. (Don't forget to pack this book; you may need it for re-entry.)

Great book.
Great book. Don' stay home without it.

There's no place like home
After experiencing numerous home accidents a friend of mine gave me this book and what a great book it is!
It is chocked full of useful advice. Here are a few tips of my own that I've learned over the years:
1. Never bring a plugged in radio into the bath with you.
2. If a substance has a skull and crossbones on it do NOT drink or other wise ingest.
3. If you have children don't leave toxic substances in areas that they have access to.
4. Don't use a fork to get that piece of burning toast out of the toaster.
5. Don't let the kids play spaceman with plastic dry-cleaning bags.
6. Never stick your hand in the garbage disposal.
7. Asbestos is bad for you.

There are many other similar suggestions in this book that most of us would never think of.
This sage advice is too late for me. I am no longer able to leave the house because of my hideous disfigurements, iron lung and inability to control my bowels. So I would recommend you get this book NOW before the only job you will be able to get involves traveling with a circus side show.

Covers all important topics and a super resource book
This is a must book for every home! All areas of potential toxins are covered, and there is a huge index of resources of where to purchase healthy products, with phone numbers addresses and websites! I bought a lot of great products that I would never have known about this way, and I am very greatful for all the practical advice in the book. I never could pinpoint what was making me sick, but after reading this book, I didn't wonder "why" I had a headache after standing in a newly painted room, etc.!

I literally planned my house around the advice given in this book! On many subjects, different views are given, and you are left to weigh the pluses and minuses and decide for yourself. This book is easy to read, fascinating, and not at all preaching. The author is also not bound by any predisposition to follow any specific views (i.e. she is not completely conventional or completely alternative) and just presents the facts straightforwardly.

A Most Complete Equine Ownership Manual
This book was recommended to me by my dressage instructor, and is one of the most complete equine books I've ever studied. It covers a little of everything, and the information is proper and correct. Once you pick it up, it's hard to put down. As a lifelong equestrian of both English and western disciplines, I have read what seems like a library of books. For some reason though, I keep turning to this one again and again. It contains good solid information for the beginner and advanced equestrian alike.

A helpful guide for any horse owner
We found "A Horse Around the House" extrememly useful as new horse owners. All the information you'll need to understand not only the makeup and characteristics of equines is here, along with subtle information about the nuances of horse personalities. We highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about horses.

The welcome return of a major equestrian reference book.
It is delightful to see the updated return of this compendious and clearly written one-stop shop for the new or experienced horse owner. The book became an almost instant classic upon its initial publication, and Pat Jacobson,a well respected teacher and trainer in the Hudson Valley region, has worked hard to incorporate the myriad advances in horse "housekeeping" that have taken place in the intervening two decades. While probably most useful to the first-time horse owner, the book is still an invaluable quick reference for anyone who does not wish to wade through piles of horse magazines to be reminded of the right treatment for thrush; what to do in hot weather, or the correct proportions of hay to grain. Elegant and humorous illustrations reinforce the readable text.

Beautiful and informative
This is a marvelous little book: both captivating narrative and very informative. I've been a great fan of hummingbirds since visiting the aviary at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tuscon. The author has done a marvelous job of telling us what its like to have a hummingbird in the house on a daily basis. And how lucky Squeak was to find Ms. Heidcamp--some things just seem to happen for a reason.

Outside of the narative of day-to-day life and habits, the author offers tons of information on hummer physiology and behavior. What a fascinating world Heidcamp has opened up to me.

The photographs in the book are excellent, and there are plenty of them. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone interested in hummingbirds, or in birds more generally...especially to someone who has dreamed of having one in their own house.

An adorable, heartwarming story
If you like birds in the least bit, you should enjoy this cute story about the tiny but spunky Squeak, the young, male hummingbird whom the author rescues from the frost and keeps in her sun room all winter long. Ms. Heidcamp should be extremely proud that she was able to make such a positive difference in the life of a creature whose species she was already following with a notebook and a passion. Her knowledge of flowers that attract hummingbirds is amazing. So, too, is her ability to stock her sun room with healthy, flowering specimens, ensure the availability of nutritional supplements and patiently regulate both the light and the temperature in the room, all so that Squeak would have what he needed to thrive. Her color photos are beautiful and perfectly illustrate the narrative. I just hope that Ms. Heidcamp someday writes a sequel so we can learn about Squeak's fate upon leaving his winter home and doting host.

Delighted throught & cried in the end - spectacular!!!
This was the most delighful & insightful book on hummingbirds that I have ever picked up - what made it so good was that my husband picked it up for me knowing how much I loved hummers & he could tell just by the jacket that a real thriller was enclosed within & he was right!!!

A great source of ideas and inspirations
In this wonderful book, widely acclaimed architect Russell Versaci tells the reader how to capture the character of an old house in a new house, tailored for today's needs. The author, who is well known for this sort of designing, starts out with his "Eight Pillars of Traditional Design", and then shows you how to put them into practice. Taking eighteen houses found throughout the country (and reflecting the traditional regional style), he uses a combination of brightly colorful pictures and highly informative text to take you around and through the houses, giving you an insiders look into what was done and why.

Having grown up in an old house, I have always found the boxy/characterless/styleless post-World War 2 houses to be nothing short of depressing. My wife and I now own a 1916 house, and wish to add in the character that makes an old house a gem. Well, we found this book to be a great source of ideas and inspirations. If you like the style and grace of well-made older houses, and want to incorporate that style and grace into your own home, then you must read this book!

A simply beautiful concept sourcebook
Creating A New Old House: Yesterday's Character For Today's Home by Russell Versaci (an experienced home designer and a founding member of The Institute for Traditional Architecture) is an impressively organized and presented guide to recapturing images, impressions, and positive virtues drawn from past traditions of interior decor in today's homes. Superbly showcasing full-color photographs in order bring interior design principles and ideals to light, Creating A New Old House is a simply beautiful concept sourcebook for adding a strong touch of enduring flavor to one's dwelling and a welcome addition to professional, academic, and community library Interior Design reference shelves.

Great source of inspirations. Great photographs.
I love older homes. And when it came to renovating our newer home we were challenged to put the old into the new. I've been a magazine junkie, culling pictures here and there. But this book is a one-stop shop for classic American styles and details. I love that these houses are not lavishly large (for the most part) but intimate. The strength is in their high quality details.
My husband and I really love this book. We have been able to visually resolve some ideas about mantels, flooring, and window styles to compliment our New England home. The side bars and floor plans are easy to follow. And notice how light plays in the interiors. Sumptuous!

(I just wish I could find an old stlye interior pattern book, complete with example photos, dates and locations. Hint, hint!)

He came riding by in the nick of time...
Heard of the saying "timing is everything"? Well, his sure was.
Kristin McCahy was struggling to hold her family and land together out west while the battles of the Civil War were still taking place in the north and south. The families in Missiouri and Kansas were having their own wars with John Brown supports coming through ravishing the land and killing when the Union supports weren't around and visa-versa. Kristin had already lost her papa when a group came through killing and burning. Then her brother left to go fight on the Union side. So her sister and she were trying to hold things down on the ranch until her brother came back when a group of riders came by determined to rape her and destroy the homeplace. And then along came Cole Slater riding by. All it took was his sharp shootin' to change the minds of the riders but a threat was left as they rode off that they would be back. Now Kristin was going to have to convince Cole to stick around to give them protection. But when Kristin gave Cole a proposition- Cole told her it was going to be his way or no way... So how does marriage come into play? I'll let you discover that.

It's a great story. HG doesn't let her readers down. Cole is mysterious and leads the reader to want to know more about him. The passion that is between him and Kristin is strong- along with the relationship Kristin has with her sister and then brother and the relationship between Cole and his 2 brothers really adds to the story. The reader won't be disappointed. I really enjoyed and highly suggest it! Now I am looking for Rides A Hero.

Another wonderful heather graham book.
If you love civil war historicals as I do you'll love this one.

Amazing!!
As soon as I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. Heather Grahm beautifully creates these unforgettable characters that you fall in love with. I could read this book a dozen times and never get tired of it.

Outstanding!
The book is a beauty. great instruction .The man is a star in his own right.Detailed enough but not tiresome.Glenwood in his best.I love his humor and his knowlege.I highly reccomend it to anyone seriously interested in learning how to do decorative painting the right way .

EXCELLENT!
This book is more than I expected. The text is interesting and get's you pumped up to try something new. Very detailed and thoughtful info. The photos are great. I'm already using some of the techniques on my current decorating assignment. This is a keeper for my library on design.

Best of the lot
I'm pretty familiar with books on painting and decorating and have quite a few. This book will soon become one of my staples. Not only are the decorating ideas fresh and good looking, but he gives whole room views instead of a little color swatch of what the finish looks like. I ordered 10 painting books at the same time and this was the only one I kept. I'm starting on my first big project out of this book next month. I would even rate this book and author higher than Debbie Travis because his instructions are easier and his projects are less "primitive" looking than hers. She was my previous mentor so this is saying a lot.

Houses that Change the World
Published in Paperback by Authentic Media (06 March, 2001)
Author: Wolfgang Simson
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Good book!!!
Wolfgang Simson presents a vision for planting house churches. 'House church' is the terminology used to describe a return to a more primitive, New Testament type of gathering. These house churches generally have meetings in which believers in the congregation use their gifts to edify one another per I Cor. 14:26 and Hebrews 10:24-25. Many in this movement desire to have strong relationships with one another, rather than a superficial handshake once a week at church meetings.

Wolfgang Simson gives readers a vision of how house churches can be planted, and how these home meetings are a good tool for evangelism. The book describes practical ways in which believers can build one another up in the Lord. His explanation of house churches in church history was very interesting. The book was an exciting read for me.

I got the impression that Wolfgang Simson's view of church government was a bit more like a cell church system put into house church packaging. For example, he presented the idea that a 'pastor' is responsible for many house churches--with the house churches having elders. Many house church advocates see the elevation the role of the one-man pastorate as not scriptural. Wolfgang's view of an apostle as someone who gives others a vision, etc. seems a bit atypical when compared to the views of many house church people in the US. Some see Acts 13 as a model for apostles--with apostles being sent out on evangelistic missions to plant churches. The views presented of five-fold ministries seem similar to institutional cell church views of these roles in the Charismatic movement. The book 'felt' a little like something coming from the Third Wave of Charismatic movement to me.

Another concern of mine is the brief re-hashing of the teaching that 'Nicolaitan' refers to clergy, which shows up in a quote from Watchman Nee. This idea is often repeated in house church circles in the US, but, imo, doesn't fit well with the text in Revelation.

I think Wolfgang's book can serve as a paradigm-shifting book which is especially suited for Charismatics who emphasize the role of five-fold ministry.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book. It's a good read for those who are interested in such things. I think this book is especially good for Christians who are planning on doing traditional church planting or missions, or a church leader or 'lay person' who wonders why they are unfufilled in a traditional church setting.

A Dangerous book for Pharisees
I don't often recommend books so highly, but I read this through once and then immediately turned back to the beginning and read it again. And again. I kept waiting to find the fly in the ointment (a few typos was the best I could manage), but this is simply one of the best books written on the subject of the house church. Thankfully, the author repeatedly states, "I'm not here to provide a model for the house church. That's not the point of this book. I simply want to present the theology and value of the house church as a model for true community."

My own admitted bias is strongly against "church as usual," so Simpson's book is of particular significance for me. He goes through some lengths to not judge the church structure, per se, but is firm in his evaluation of where such a structure has led us (and indeed the world) since the 3rd Century.

Ministers and church leaders who are dyed-in-the-wool conservative in their respective dogmas and doctrines will condemn this work outright as a threat to the very church. They will be profoundly wrong in doing so. Simpson presents what many believe is the salvation and survival of the church.

Perhaps this book resonates so strongly with me because I had just finished reading John Eldridge's "Waking the Dead." His chapter on his small group made me weep. That's what I'm looking for. That sense of vulnerability in a safe place, honest encouragement and support, and a place where my own gifts can be recognized, nurtured and called out. Simpson merely reaffirmed that desire in greater dimension and detail.

If you are satisfied with church as usual and simply going through the motions of what looks like Christianity, if you value form over substance, if you value the image of community more than community itself, stay away from this book. Just go to church on Sunday and clutch your coffee and doughnut, do the grip-and-grin and convince yourself everything's just fine. But if you long for something more, something real, something lasting, read this book. Then go do what it says you can do.

Very Valuable Insights That Church Leaders Need to Hear
Was very impressed with this book that both takes us back in time to the early church and forward to where the Holy Spirit seems to be leading the church in the 21st century. For many, this book will be a breath of fresh air that will strike a chord in many hearts. It's a cry to move back toward a Christian faith that centers on Christ and His followers and not programs and charismatic leaders. Well-written, insightful and provocative.
