From the AuthorOk, you have to expect that I would rate my own book 5 stars - who wouldn't? I'm proud of this book because it is different from other hot rod books. Most rod books are titled "Hot Rods by Me - the Legend!" and they only give you one point of view - the author's. I have been involved with old cars for years but rather than give my single point of view, I interviewed hot rod shops all over the country so you could gain the expertise of multiple professionals at once. The single reason for failed hot rod projects is the lack of planning. This book helps you plan the entire project. You will be able to set budgets, goals, inspect shops and assess your skills to see what steps you can do yourself. The book is packed with online resources for shops and part suppliers; and is a must for any new hot rodder! If you are using a classic body, my first book, "Modern Techniques for Auto Restoration" may be helpful too. Good luck!

Not as hot as other Francis books...I rank Dick Francis in the top 5 fiction authors writing. He consistently puts out great mysteries with characters devoted to their values and plots interesting enough to keep me coming back for more.
"Hot Money" is not one of his best. I found his main character in this novel too willing to compromise on issues that I wouldn't have expected Francis to compromise on. I still recommend this book but with some minor reservations.

Too much moneyFor whatever reason this novel has gone out of print. One can hope that the publisher will reprint. The main character, Malcomb Pembroke, has a knack for making money, particularly in investments in gold, and has become very wealthy (by 1987 standards, when the novel was written). The problem is the fact that he doesn't get along with his ex-wives and children. He won't increase allowances set when he was merely rich rather than filthy rich. His first three ex-wives and their seven children seem to hover about like greedy vultures waiting for him to die so they can inherit the estate. This is compounded by sibling rivalries, ex-wives poisoning their childrens' minds, and various mental attitudes. The children are furious when Malcomb starts donating money to charities and spending millions on racehorses.
The novel is an interesting whodunit as first Malcomb's fifth wife is murdered, and then attempts are made on his life. There are many people with motives, mainly in the family. His son Ian, the only child he trusts, helps unravel the mystery. The story illustrates how money can corrupt a family. While the reader can make some guesses, the ending is not obvious.
Francis at his BestA rich patriarch and his estranged son rebuild their relationship while trying to find out which of the family asssortment of ex-wives and offspring is trying to kill them. One of his best books (and they are all good), with the smooth flow, wry wit, sustained tension, and consummate storytelling which are the hallmarks of Dick Francis. Most highly recommended.

among friendsI have been a contractor for over twenty years, and a fairly successful one at that. Im sitting in my local cigar shop as I do on a regular basis and I meet Harvey (the author), we talk. and he tells me about his book, so I read it. Well im on my fourth reading as of now, and im still picking up new thoughts. I have recomended this book to many fellow contractors, due to the ease of reading and the simple principles that we all forget from time to time. All I can say is great insight and simply stated.
Business School in 1 little book!Mr. Goldstein has charmed the reader once again by encapsulating the fundamentals from business school into an easily digestible "story". This book will be a great benefit to any business owner/entreprenuer that needs to step back and reflect on the meaning of life whenever the pressures of running a business weigh heavily... hopefully, most of us will read this book while there is still time to appreciate what we have and what we CAN build for the future.
Great Book! I Highly Recomend It!This book was very helpful in explaining the ways businesses work and how they should be run. This book is not written like any other i have seen, and it flows very well. I picked it up and couldnt put it down until i was done. I'm in the process of starting my own business, and i felt this book is very useful, as i related to the situations presented in this book.

A must-read before you buy a carThis practical guide to buying, financing and insuring a car (new or used) comes in compact format, so you can bring it along as you go car-shopping. It gives comprehensive coverage on negotiating on a deal, choosing the right financing alternatives, shopping for insurance, and even has a chapter on selling your car. While price negotiation coverage is not as deep as that in the excellent "What Car Dealers Don't Want You to Know," this book explains clearly the myriad terms used by the car industry, terms that are designed to confuse you into paying more than necessary.
Armed with this book, you'll be able to better understand how to get the best deal for the car you want as well as gain the confidence to do it. Highly recommended.

deathly boringThe author of this book performed an amazing writing feat: turning a complicated, interesting story into one of the dullest books I have ever had the misfortune to try to read. In addition to its essential boring character, I was left wondering why the author didn't bother to learn at least a few basic facts about horses before writing a book centered around horses.
the frightening part is that it is all truethis expose of the otherwise ignored goings on in the world of Hunters and Jumpers is shocking to those not on the "inside". To others, it is business as usual. Unfortunately. Truly appalling is that these people who KILLED their horses for money are STILL involved in the business. AND there are others who didn't get caught...
This book is a MUST READ for anyone involved in the horse world.
Terrific Book - A Must ReadAnyone involved in the showing of hunter/jumper horses on the
A-Circuit should read this book. It is well researched and I could not put it down. Although it came out in 1996..the same thing is going on in 2004.
I show horses & what I have seen during the past few years in the name of "sport" is disgusting. This book accurately portrays the greed, lack of character & criminality of some so-called horse people. It is such a shame for the honest, good horse professionals out there. They usually get drummed out of the A'Circuit if they won't play ball w/ the crooks that have control
In the Virginia, Maryland area, it is business as usual. Drugging horses & ponies, showing lame animals, ruining them & "having to put them down"...because, "oh well, they can't do the job anymore" & collecting insurance to buy another expensive horse & pay more commmissions to the trainers & middlemen.
I've seen a well- known broker/dealer of ponies becoming rich by lying & conning unsuspecting parents who are listening to the "advice" of their trainers...not realizing that they are all tied in on the "con". Kickbacks, pay-offs, drugging, not claiming sales/commissions on tax returns, falsifying the true ages of horses & ponies, as well as, falsifying vet records. You name it, it's happening right now.
AHSA (now called USEF) the governing body of show horses has been completely ineffectual in rectifying this criminal behavior. When trainers are caught using illegal drugs on their ponies & horses, they get a mere slap on the hand. The type of customer that stays w/ them is just as bad...the win at all cost attitude w/ no regard for the harm it does the horse or risk for the rider...many who are children.
I applaud the DA in Illinois who went after these scum (some who are currently still involved in the horse business)
I think a criminal investigation should be opened up on this entire racket. It is a huge fraud.
THis book accurately depicts the horse show world right now.
