Winfred Rembert's remarkable life and art
This book pairs Mr. Rembert's remarkable paintings of his life with a poem by Nikki Giovanni. Winfred Rembert, an African-American artist originally from Georgia, incises scenes from his early life story on panels of leather, creating an unusually effective art form. The 3-D quality of his works, with forms molded through leather working techniques and colorfully dyed in precise areas, is difficult to capture in photographs, and some of the illustrations in this book only hint of the depth of his images. Mr. Rembert narrates the scenes in an approachable style. He has lived a life of epic proportions; he describes being given away as an infant by his mother to a relative, picking cotton in the rural south in near slave conditions, the good times at "colored corner," his civil rights struggle, surviving a near lynching, and his imprisonment, partly spent on a chain-gang. In prison he was introduced to the leather working techniques that he now employs in his art. In spite of his struggles, Mr. Rembert never lost his sense of himself or his optimism. Now living in New Haven, CT, he first exhibited his paintings at the Yale Art Gallery in 2000. This is the first book on his life and paintings. "Don't Hold me Back" is a must buy for anyone interested in African-American life and art, or in folk art today.

Another side of Snyder
From the outset, I have to say that I like Gary Snyder a lot. Less pretentious than Ferlenghetti and more perceptive than Ginsberg, his poems are like modern haiku, brilliant observations and juxtapositions that somehow manage to express what most artists simply cannot.

_Earth House Home_ is a collection of Snyder's prose, which happily enjoys the same distinction. It's an eclectic mix, with journal excerpts that read more like rough notes for poetry; book reviews that illuminate their subjects from unexpected angles; an account of day-to-day life at a Zen temple in Kyoto; and more, concluding with my favourite section, an almost Joycean account of Snyder's views on society and culture.

Get this, any way you can. You won't regret it. Also recommended for those just discovering Synder: _No Nature_, a 'collected works' of sorts.

Failure to Hold: The Politics of School Violence
Published in Hardcover by Rowman & Littlefield (Non NBN) (15 February, 2003)
Author: Julie A. Webber
Amazon base price: $72.00
Average review score:

Interesting, Smart, and Deep
Interesting, smart, and deep book. Dr. Webber does an extraordinary job explaining how school violence is an expected response of young men and women when facing a society and a political system that does not provide them with tools and/or channels of political communication and participation in their schools, towns, states, country, and even international system. Dr. Webber also applies the "containment policy" practiced by the US government (in domestic and foreign policy terms) to the analysis of school violence. Anyone interested in violence, government, curriculum theory, education, and youth politics must buy this book.

How to Really Improve Relationships
This book is an ingenious gift from the author. The secrets shared here have helped any number of lives, some of whom I know personally. Simons literally reverse-engineers ancient four pillar feng shui to make some of its most profound insights available to westerners. He approaches relationships not on the perfunctory level often prescribed by the latest fad book, but on the soul level where all of our relationship outcomes are ultimately determined.

This book is a TRUE how-to for relationship enhancement. It invokes feng shui in the way it is meant to be used, to enhance rather than substitute for self-knowledge. What a fantastic opportunity this book provides those who seriously want to improve the world through relationships and feng shui.

And it's not difficult! Simons' brilliance is that the complex Taoist calculations and philosophies are rendered here in common-sense terms that are accessible to and effective for all. Be prepared for a wonderful journey with this book.

An Excellent Look at the Early Days of the Korean War
This is a classic book that deserves to be reprinted. HOLD BACK THE NIGHT is an excellent account of the withdrawal from the Korean reservoirs during the very worst days of the Korean War. It is compellingly and believably written, and tells a wonderful story of courage and dedication under fire, and the interactions and bonds that form in a small unit under continuous threat of attack. The writing is crisp, taut, and believable. I rate this book right up there with James Michener's THE BRIDGES OF TOKO-RI and James Salter's THE HUNTERS as the finest of all Korean war fiction. Not to be missed!

Moving love story with complex characters
Larry and Jenny Andrews are a New England couple who have been happily married for fifteen years, and who have two fine children: Rick and Christy. Their lives are stable and happy.

Then one day, Larry's old flame, Ky, turns up again in his life on a business pretext. Larry is forced to confess to Jenny about his and Ky's tragic break-up, and how he feels guilty for never having told Ky how sorry he was. He manages to apologize to Ky now, and wants to go on with his life, but Ky refuses to let go.

Larry is flattered by Ky's attentions, but he wants to remain faithful to his wife. Jenny feels plain and dowdy beside the glamorous Ky. And the children, initially admiring of Ky, become confused at the turn of events. Will a near-tragedy involving Rick on a sailing trip finally set things right?

This was a wonderful story. The characters are complex. Larry is basically a good guy who suffers when he is torn between temptation and fidelity. Jenny is a strong heroine who cares deeply about her family; a quiet woman whose courage holds the family together. The conclusion of the story is right and deeply moving. Recommended.
