Religious story telling in the Christian tradition
While the religious storytelling tradition of the Sufis and Jews are well known and available in many version, the Christian tradition of exempla (not a mispelling) is relatively unknown. The Disciplina Clericalis of Petrus Alfonis is an excellent starting point.

Petrus Alfonis was a Spanish convert (in 1106) to Christianity who had spent significant time in Egypt. His book which includes exempla, proverbs, fables etc. illustrates the way stories drift across religious boundaries as his tales come from all three traditions with which he was familiar. It will also remind you of the longevity of stories ... You may recognize a tale of a dog as a southern tall tale.

The translation is very readable; if your interest is strictly in the stories themselves, you lose nothing by skipping the introduction but the introduction is useful in setting the context and the influence of the book.

Consider this a must for storytellers, especially religious storytellers.

An Ancient Critique of an Ancient Text
This edition of the Emerald Tablet which in which Hortulanus gives commentary of the thirteen "stanzas" of the Hermes most famous work. The translation by Patrick J. Smith is readable with explanatory notes. There is a short introduction which attempts to give a concise history of the Emerald Tablet, then proceeds from there to read the Tablet in full, while thereafter is the commentary then notes. Not a long book, however the dialect of the times is enough to slow the reader down a bit, not to mention the dense subject matter. Its not an entirely entertaining book, but fascinating in itself is the Emerald Tablet. The notes are without references, however well written in a dry, scholarly form. Reccomended for the student of alchemy and occultism.

An amazing work...but not for the weak of heart!
Wow. As a long-time student of the occult, I was immediately drawn to this book. At first, I shook my head and laughed. But then I began to read. Victor Klein has done his homework! There is so much information packed in this book, I don't know where to begin!

This book attempts to draw together centuries of global religious material and condense it into a dissertation on the occult. Does it succeed? You bet it does.

A warning: this is a VERY heavy piece of scholarship. I had to take many breaks while reading this, just to digest all the information. This is not a book for beginners. I'd recommend something else, but truthfully, there is no other book on the market that comes close to this one.

Pretty good.
This is a pretty fascinating book, containing the works attributed to Hermes in English as well as the non-translated version, revealing one version on one page and the other version on the next page; Thus, when one reads the book, they find the non-translated version on one page and the English version on the other page, with footnotes and stuff to help out. Overall, a good book, and it gives some understanding of the thinking of the ancient Magickians and other Occultists. Worth getting, overall.

An Excellent Companion
Herodotus does not need to be made interesting or enjoyable. He has always been loved and for good reason. Nevertheless, for a deeper understanding of the text and a critical examination of the features of Herodotus' style as a master storyteller, James Romm's Herodotus is a superb volume. With clarity and skill, Mr. Romm takes the reader through the Histories, always with one eye focused on the man, on Herodotus himself. This volume lives up to the foreward and the expectations set forth by Mr. Herrington, the Hermes Books foudning editor, in that foreward. The general reader will find this volume useful and enjoyable. I should not overstate, however. Romm's book does not provide what we might call a reading of Herodotus but rather it allows the reader to appreciate the Histories more by pointing out continuing themes and main features of Herodotus' storytelling. This book will be recieved well by any serious student of Herodotus, ancient history, or the classics.

A Person is of More Value than the Whole World
I can truly relate to the father. He apparently embodies an ideal Filipino who places a kin above anyone else. This is not say that Filipinos are family-centered, or in that sense, self-centered. The character displayed by the protagonist is nonetheless someone that anybody should highly regard.

For some people, a dead person may lose significance. Yet, for a father who truly works hard for the living members of the family, remembering those who have passed away is simply an act of remembering those who are still alive. An act to be praised, isn't it?

F. Arcellena has simply highlighted one of the most regarded identities of the Philippine Culture in this stunning masterpiece.

Westward to Home Joshua's Oregon Trail Diary
This book was good enough for me to keep reading it in one day. It was full of excitement and I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. For example, was Joshua going to save his drowning sister? Would they make it to Oregon before all the people died of illness or falling into the raging river? I suggest that you read this book if you want to know about the Oregon Trail -- a trail that starts in Missouri and continues through tons of states to Oregon.
