Excellent
Not just for people looking for a hedge fund! This book is a great introduction to modern portfolio theory and gives excellent descriptions of most key concepts. If there's a 2nd edition, I hope he will include more clarity and discussion of key terms like Sharpe Ratio (there are 2 definitions in customary usage, it's an important and misunderstood number, and there is no occurrence of "sharpe ratio" in the index), Alpha, Beta, R-squared, etc. Nonetheless, this book is extremely helpful and highly recommended.

Great, Great, Great
This book is great!

I'm a Wall Street professional, but wanted to understand more about the hedge fund business. My initial concern was that this book was going to be too basic, but it was not. It provided excellent insights into the function of hedge funds in today's financial world, various types of investment strategies, the tools available to hedge funds and even went into regulatory and tax issues. It answered all the questions I had about hedge funds (and was afraid to ask). Yet while it was not too simplistic for someone already in the financial services world, it was also not too complicated for a layperson. This book will remain a valuable resource for me in the future.

Fantastic overview of the industry
This book presents a fantastic overview of the hedge fund industry. The intended target audience is hedge fund investors, which is reinforced by the author's credentials as an executive in a "Fund of Funds". In addition, the book would be very useful as an interview to financial markets, useful for business students interested in careers in trading or hedge funds.

The book starts with a broad overview of market theory, covering efficient markets, diversification theory and strengths and weaknesses of the "Random Walk" theory. The book then moves to an overview of the various investment tools available to hedge funds, such as going long and short on stock prices and volatility. (If you'd like to know in plain english what being "long volatility" means, this is a good book for you!) The book then covers legal, financial and operational details of running a fund. Lastly, it covers the various types of funds, such as equity funds and event driven funds. The scope of the material covers financial institutions such as investment banks and brokers that support hedge funds.

In summary, this was a very informative introductory text on both hedge funds and markets. It will be very useful to both new investors in hedge funds, as well as students of financial markets. The math is well explained, and there are only a few tough technical sections.

Enjoy!

Mac Hedges is a National Treasure!!!
I first met Mac Hedges in July of 1999 when I got a flat tire way up on the Summit Lake Indian Reservation in the northwest corner of Nevada. I'm a rockhound and was on my way from digging for fire opals in the Virgin Valley to hammering away at boulder opal in the Black Rock Desert.

The shortest route between the two places is straight up and over the hills-as the crow flies. Naturally, since only the crows are crazy enough to take this route, the road is the worse for wear. Hence the flat tire. Oh-did I mention it was pouring sheets of rain at the time and the wind was so strong it was near impossible to stand up to it. Well, it was. And cold, too. The nearest hub of civilization was either back in Denio, 50 arduous miles behind me, or in Gerlach, an even more arduous and soggy 70 miles ahead.

It was then that I remembered the guest ranch at the base of the hills. This would be Soldier Meadows Guest Ranch in the far northern reaches of the Black Rock Desert-the domain of Mac and Candi Hedges. Two of the finest, most hospitable folks I have ever met.

Once the spare tire was on and the back of the truck was repacked, I headed off in search of the ranch. Mac and Candi welcomed me, topped off my spare and allowed me and my dog to stay the night. It was at that first dinner at the ranch that I experienced the phenomenal story-telling abilities of Mac Hedges.

He comes in right off the range and hangs his hat on a peg inside the door. Then he clomps around the dining room in his boots and chattering spurs and piles the food high on his plate. He takes his seat at the head of the table and checks in with each and every person there. What did y'all do today? Where'd ya go? Did you see this? Did you do that? And then the story telling begins. His brilliant blue eyes just dance and sparkle with the sheer joy and humor of the stories he tells. Every one of us at the table is entranced and fully absorbed into his special world. He soon has us all in stitches and rolling on the floor with the antics of his cowboy life.

I have since returned to the ranch and dinnertime is always the highlight of the day. With all the stories I have heard Mac tell, he has never repeated a single one and not a one of them appears in this book.

Mac-this book is TERRIFIC and I hope you sell a million of them. I hope you get a movie made of it some day, too. You are truly a National Treasure and should be recognized as such.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys life and looks to live it to its fullest, because that's what this book is all about.

Great Real Life Cowboy!
This is a great and fun book to read. Did'nt want it to end. Wish there were more like it. I bought this book at a "guest" ranch in Northwest Nevada where Mac Hedges is still being a cowboy. He's the real thing and so is his book!

CAN'T PUT IT DOWN!
Finally, a "real cowboy" story by a real cowboy. None of this make-believe Hollywood bull-puckey here! Having ridden in the same saddle as Hedges many years ago, it is refreshing to read a well-written and true-to-life tale of two migrant buckaroos as they work and play in some of the most beautiful and off-the-beaten paths in the Great American West. One of the few books that makes me laugh out loud! A must for any serious WESTERN fan (Never use country and WESTERN in the same sentence!). A tip of the ol'Stetson to Mackey Hedges. Here's to the next book!

HOW WOMEN SPOKE THROUGH THEIR QUILTS TO CHANGE THE WORLD
My husband purchased this book for me and WOW! It is packed with information regarding the common bond that women had in fellowshipping, politicking, raising money for war efforts, changing society, gaining strength to have a voice, comforting others ...all through their domestic art of quilting. A must for quilters and for anyone who has a tendency to believe that domesticity disables one from being active to change society for the good of everyone!

Interesting for all - not just women or quilters
Before I bought the book I saw the video three times. When I was watching it at home, one by one my family sat down and joined me. The panoramic view of American history through the quilts the women made from the Revolutionary War up through the 1800s was fascinating and touching. An excellent video and an excellent book.

Hearts and Hands
I used the accompanying video in a workshop I taught at the University level. What a heartwarming and accurate trip through womens' history, linking us to them through a common craft. The book successfully informs us of their political and social challenges as we view the gorgeous creations of their hands. The music score is vital to portraying the feeling, as well, and is perfect to the subject.

I recommend viewing the video for any who are interested in womens' history or in the folkart of quilting.

Ahoy, There, Me Miceys!
Jill Barklem's Brambly Hedge Mice are on a sea adventure this time. Traditonal British rural customs are depicted with inviting illustrations and you can enjoy a mouse eye's view of Dusty's charming boat, The Periwinkle, as they sail off in search of salt. When they meet up with their cousins, the Sea Mice, who moved from the Green Fields to the Dunes long ago, they enjoy a lively cultural exchange that you are sure to enjoy along with them. Treat yourself to a game of dominoes and a candied violet or two and immerse yourself in this enchanting little world. This book reminds me of both Beatrix Potter and "The Wind in the Willows" but I like the illustrations even more than Potter's. There are such lovely and clever details rendered in soft pastels. Sail away with this fun book but don't miss out on the others by Ms. Barklem!

Sea Story is a FUN Book!
I love books written and illustrated by Jill Barklem. The mice in her stories are so sweet, and she gives them cute names. In this story, the youngest mouse is called "Baby Shrimp!" The mice build a boat and go sailing in search of salt. They have lots of fun adventures and get to visit with their faraway relatives, who collect salt from the ocean near their home. This is a nice story, with lots of beautiful pictures of life in Brambly Hedge...

SEA STORY
This is a gentle story with wonderful use of the English language and lots of opportunites for discussion with children. Vocabulary words, tides, levers, methods of travel, salt and its necessity and harvesting, manners, feelings, family and friends. The illustrations are cozy and delightful and detailed enough to spend time looking for things with a child so inclined.

Excellent!
I've read several books about Yes. But I've wanted to read this one (the first ever written about the band) since the early 80s. It took me until 2004 to find a copy I could afford.

The book was worth waiting for. I finally see why so many long-time Yes fans have always liked it.

The writing is excellent -- funny, opinionated, and packed with information. The photo selection is superb, and includes many pictures I hadn't seen before. The book is over 20 years old, so it only takes you up to the 'Drama' era. Unfortunately, it's officially out of print, so it's expensive.

But it's a magnificent read, indispensable for any Yes fan. Easily five stars. Maybe six.

A Great Book
Forget about the new books, this is the ONLY Yes bio that matters. Get it if you can!!!

Phenomenal
Not only have I read this book over and over again, I have had the good fortune to have it signed by ALL the band members over the years. It is a complete history. I love it!

Hedges hits the ball out of the park with this one....
This book was written back in 1996 and boy didn't Hedges call it right? Many of those people who hung their hopes on a J-O-B now find themselves out of work and attacked Hedges for this book and it's predecessor, "Who Stole The American Dream", are probably wishin they had listened to Hedges instead of attacking him.The very popular Rich Dad series of books is interestingly sending out the same message only to a larger audience---you must go from employee to self employed if you want to succeed. The best and fairest boss that you will ever have is the one you see every morning in the mirror.I also recommend "Who Stole The American Dream", "Cash Flow Quadrant", "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" and "Wave 4."

Why your job "vehicle" ain't going where you think it is!
A great book to learn why Jobs = slavery and Self-employed = Freedom and that it's your choice as to which direction you go. And why. And what to do about it.

A great book with a simple idea that most Americans never realize.

I've been free from a job for years now. I just wish I'd had this book to read when I got out of college. I would have started my action plan to freedom sooner. Now I help others "plan their escape" by consulting them on how to become free by starting their own business. If I weren't there to guide them, I'd toss 'em this book instead.

Extremely motivational!!
This book is great for anyone thinking about starting their own business. If you have any insecurities about leaving the world of jobism, they will all disappear after reading this book.

Absolute Returns: The Risk and Opportunities of Hedge Fund Investing

Who is the Audience?
This book has many fine features but has two serious drawbacks as well.

On the positive side, I have never read a more complete polemic in favor of the hedge fund industry. He shreds EMF with loads of good evidence and humorous anecdotes. However, there seems to be a constant drive to reinforce this point. Unfortunately, it takes away from a more thorough analysis of the types of hedge fund investing.

Another problem with the book is that it has trouble discovering its audience. At times, we get detailed descriptions of what alpha and beta represent (Finance 101) and at other times, abstruse PM concepts are brushed over as common knowledge.

I would definitely recommend this book but I recommend that the reader is accompanied by a Dictionary of Finance and Investing.

A Lesson from the Titanic
The iceberg on the cover represents total risk-partly visible and partly not. Ineichen's point is that hedge fund or absolute return managers tackle total risk while their traditional mutual fund counterparts worry about only one part of it, namely the risk of straying from their benchmark. His extensive discussion contains worthy lessons for all investors who want to understand risk. While not every chapter may be useful for every reader, this book is an excellent place to learn about alternative investment strategies.

Essential Hedge Fund Guide
This is an excellent introduction for potential investors to assess risk and reward.

For more on new hedge fund products, hedge fund leverage, and off-balance sheet risk, I also highly recommend Tavakoli's "Credit Derivatives" 2nd Edition.

Good comprehensive guide to how hedge funds work
More quantitative than most other books on hedge funds, this volume provides a comprehensive look at the hottest investment vehicles at the moment. Starting with the history, the book discusses the structure, operations, strategies, and performance measures of hedge funds. Unlike books written by the president of HFR, which are purely marketing turd, this book has substance and can be kept as a solid reference. Minor problems include a few critical typos, some irrevelent charts, and choppy English in a few places -- and a high price. But these do not distract from the value this book, and I recommend it to all interested in the topic.

Broad introduction
This is a good introduction into the subject. Well researched. If you only buy two books on the topic, this should be one of them.

In-Depth and Comprehensive
Lhabitant's "Hedge Funds: Myths and Limits" covers its subject from legal and tax aspects to quantitative and statistical finance. More than this, in line with the subtitle, the book debunks the myths and outlines the limits for the hedge fund industry. The critique delivered is however balanced, and the book manages to maintain a constructive as well as instructive tone. Different material is separated in a way that make the book a good read for both people outside the finance industry and quantitative analysts. Look for more on this at [webpage]

excellent books
All of the Brambly Hedge books are wonderful. The stories are gentle and imaginative, and the illustrations are detailed and creative. I'd give all of them 5 stars except for one thing: the size of the books. On one hand their smaller size gives them a certain charm, but the first Brambly Hedge book I saw was one I took from the library in a "standard" picture book size, and you could just get lost in the illustrations. The smaller size of these books detracts from the loveliness of the pictures -- it's much more difficult to pick out the wonderful details, and the color is also a little less vibrant than the version I had seen, again making it hard to pick things out. What a disappointment, because the illustrations are half the charm of the books. If they had only made these books larger, they'd be perfect in every way.

Beautiful
When I was a kid, I loved these books, I was delighted to find these here, as I still have my original copies from childhood. For those who love the artwork, target has the whole line!!

poppy's babies
My daughter and her children and I all love the Brambly Hedge series. The stories and illustrations are fabulous. Anyone interested in porcelain will also love collecting the Brambly Hedge teaset and wall plates by Royal Doulton. Fabric is also available for quilts, tablecloths, etc. Brambly Hedge is a wonderful place to visit.
