Explains universal mechanical principles to the layman.I read this book 25 years ago when I was a fledgling truck mechanic, and I found it to be a comprehensive, useful guide to all things mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, etc. It is a must for someone wanting to have a basic understanding of these principles, and how to apply them to cars, trucks, tractors, welders, air compressors, pumps, etc. Separate chapters on Disassembly and Assembly, discussing methods of work; a chapter on The Inclined Plane, and relating this principle to ramps, screw threads, gears and leverage, and the angle of a bulldozers blade; a chapter on Lubrication, with a cartoon drawing of an old neglected bulldozer sitting in the field, covered with cobwebs and dust, a cat resting on the hood, and the caption, "bearings are probably rusting." This book should be in every mechanics library.

Heavy Gear II: Official Strategy Guide
Published in Paperback by Brady Games (June, 1999)
Amazon base price: $19.99
Used price: $2.50
Used price: $2.50
The original Heavy Gear was pretty much a dud, thanks to all those lovely bugs and crashes. But the sequel is big, bad, and better than your average giant robot combat game. Completing a mission in Heavy Gear II takes brains and brawn--not to mention a strong stomach, since the zero-G action of those spaceborne missions can send a queasy player running for the Dramamine. Brady's guide to the game will help you master the art of Gear warfare. Beginning with a thorough breakdown of the game's multitudinous weapons, this book gives you all the information you'll need to lead Operation Black Talon. The weapon descriptions, in fact, are a great place to start, since the number of choices can be overwhelming. A complete description of each Gear chassis follows, with somewhat cryptic values assigned to each one. After that, it's on to basic training as you soak up some pointers for Gear tactics. The slim, three-tip section on space combat was disappointing, but the rest of this section is pretty solid. The meat of the book is in the walkthroughs. There are 30 missions in all, and the walkthrough for each is complete if somewhat brief. The book wraps up with a section on multiplayer tips and a series of tables detailing many of the game's statistics. All in all, a good reference for an excellent game. --Michael Ryan

The best strategy guide of 1999Even before I bought the game, I knew I would love it because I've been waiting for it for nine months. But when I bought the games the first day it came out, I had some trouble learning how to beat the levels, but when I bought the book I flew flew the game. I still had some trouble, but It helped me out so much. I recommend this book to everybody who buys Heavy Gear 2 to also buy the strategy guide by Mark H. Walker. It is definitley worth it.
Thank you, Michael Ricottone

Great value..This book is a dynamite for the beginner. The photos are so good and self explanatory in most cases. All techniques are covered with a simple explanation. The accompanying cd will give you a sense of how you should be sounding...You will benefit from the 87 exercises which are in both Tabs and Music notation. Gets you really started. Though the book is not promising to teach you any licks, you will appreciate this book. I know I did.

The thrilling history of a unique scientific substance. With his newest work of science history, Heavy Water and the Wartime Race for Nuclear Energy, physicist and author Per Dahl pulls off the remarkable feat of delivering both a scholarly work and a nail-biting thriller. *** Late in 1938, Lise Meitner, Otto Hahn, and Fritz Strassman discovered the phenomenon of atomic fission; physicists everywhere realized that if chain reactions could be tamed, fission could lead to a new source of power. What was needed was a substance that could "moderate" the energy of neutrons emitted in radioactive decay, so that they could be captured by other fissionable nuclei. Heavy water was a prime candidate for the job -- its role in world affairs thus forever assured. ***While plenty of books and movies have dealt with Allied efforts to deny heavy water to the Germans in World War II, Dahl's is the first history of the substance itself -- not as "a purely technical treatise," he writes in the preface (although there are details and diagrams aplenty), but "a social history." ***Deuterium, a hydrogen atom whose nucleus includes one neutron, was discovered before the neutron itself. In 1931, most scientists thought the differing weights of isotopes were due to extra protons bound to "nuclear electrons." By Thanksgiving of that year, Columbia University chemist Harold Urey had identified the spectral lines of what he would later call deuterium in a few cubic centimeters of concentrated liquid hydrogen. Not until February 1932, in Cambridge, England, did James Chadwick discover the neutron. ***Deuterium is physically so different from ordinary hydrogen (roughly twice as massive, for one thing) that chemists eagerly turned their attention to it. They wondered what differences deuterium instead of ordinary hydrogen might make in the behavior of chemical compounds; what the effects on plants and animals of water with two deuterium atoms per molecule might be; and even what therapeutic potential this literally heavy water might possess. *** The protean Gilbert Lewis, Urey's mentor at the University of California at Berkeley, was a pioneer in these investigations, and he soon made more heavy water than Urey himself -- enough that, among many other experiments, he was able to feed two-thirds of a gram of the precious stuff to a mouse. The mouse survived, Lewis reported, but showed "marked signs of intoxication." ***Concentrating heavy water requires enormous amounts of electricity. In the 1930s, one of the few places in the world with power to spare was the Vemork plant of Norway's Norsk Hydro-Elektrisk, which had harnessed a 144-meter-high waterfall to produce fertilizers. Norsk Hydro supplied the world's scientific community with heavy water only as a sideline. Inebriated mice aside, what was it good for? *** Nuclear fission supplied the answer. The best candidates for moderators in atomic reactors were heavy water and pure graphite. Dahl relates the fascinating events, including romantic distractions, that persuaded German scientists that graphite wouldn't do the job. When, in late 1939, the Germans began ordering heavy water in very large quantities, Norsk Hydro management suspected "some kind of deviltry." ***Frédéric Joliot knew perfectly well what kind of deviltry, and with the cooperation of Norsk Hydro, the French managed to spirit the company's entire stock of heavy water, some 185 kilograms, out of the country under the noses of watching German agents. Later, Joliot's assistants smuggled most of it out of Vichy France and used it to convince the British that chain reactions were practical. ***Meanwhile the Germans had invaded Norway, and the Allies set out to destroy Vemork, a story familiar from the 1965 Hollywood film, Heroes of Telemark, starring Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris. Despite tragic loss of life, the Norwegian underground repeatedly sabotaged Vemork's heavy water production until the Germans finally gave up. *** The German attempt to build a reactor was feeble and disorganized -- and their effort to build an atomic weapon nonexistent -- but the Allies didn't know that. German interest in heavy water was a major factor in the race to build the A-bomb. ***Per Dahl masterfully recounts all these events and many more. There is wisdom in his judicious treatment of persistent historical debates, including the rancorous argument that still rages about the motivations of Hahn, Werner Heisenberg, and the other members of the German "Uranium Club." His style is lively, his research thorough, his organization superb. ***The Institute of Physics Publishing company has matched Dahl's efforts by giving Heavy Water and the Wartime Race for Nuclear Energy the scholarly apparatus and handsome production it deserves.

Great Book for Freshwater BoatersThis is like a Boy Scout Handbook for power boaters. Filled with detailed information and great illustrations, it is a must for every boater. Whether you are an occasional boater or an faithfull weekend warrior this book should be read and kept on board. The rescue techniques and boat handling methods are very important for all of us to practice when we are out on the waters. Luttrell's book should be required reading for every person who rents boats for the occasional trip to the lake.

A Critical Look at China After the Cutural RevolutionThis book is an excellent example of realist Chinese fiction. The story revolves around the lives of the leaders, workers and families connected to a government bureaucracy responsible for managing the production of machinery. I deals with questions facing Chinese workers in the late 1970s as they struggled to balance the goals of socialism with their personal desires for survival and improvement of their own quality of life. What is so interesting about the book is the management difficulties faced by workers and leaders withing the ministry -- it really shows that even under a communist regime, people still face the same interpersonal work issues, such as nepotism, career sabotage, corruption, etc. that are universally present. I highly recommend this book!

How to Cope With Storms is direct and to the point. We use this book for the Ocean Sailing Class that we teach (soundsailingcenter.com). The book is straighforward, authoritative, and to the point. Covers a lot of material. Very good value. Some of the descriptions about the difficulty in dealing with heavy weather are so direct in a German sort of a way, that they are funny (I was reading the book initially while sailing upwind in 40-50 knots in our J44. The pounding was intense. The author writes something to the effect that 'in heavy weather, when sailing upwind in a modern, well built boat, it will seem that the boat will break apart from the pounding, but it will not'. We had a good laugh about that section, since it was exactly what we were thinking.

Most used book on my shelf....I'd have given it 6 stars if it had color photos. This is an indispensable reference for anyone interested in vintage Ford and Fordson farm tractors. Plenty of details and b/w photos illustrating the details of each model and a chronological listing of model year changes. This is the one I reach for for quick, accurate information. A wealth of historical data in an easy-to-use format. A great companion to Pripps' "Vintage Ford Tractors," this one can go with you to the tractor auction.
