Tender Story of a Father & Son Dealing with Alzheimer's
An estranged father and son are brought together by the son's caretaking duty as his father "disappears" into Alzheimer's. Though Alzheimer's brings them together, it also acts as a roadblock to reconciliation. Haugse tracks the vagaries of memory using both words and picture to illustrate the story. The present is intercut with flashbacks of childhood memories of his dad. This unusual book depicts the anguish and love that arises in dealing with Alzheimer's. Though a bittersweet memoir, the book is true to life, insightful and inspiring.

An Affecting Visual Narrative
John Haugse's drawings and narrative are an unusually affecting medium for telling the story of his relationship with his father. Heavy Snow is sure to resonate with anyone who has been estranged from a parent because of lifestyle and career choices, with anyone who has experienced the unsettling role reversal from dependent to caregiver, and especially anyone who has a parent or other loved one suffering from Alzheimer's. While the story is a painful one, it is not without humor and the revelation of the possibilities of enhanced human contact in even this most difficult of situations.

I have given this book to friends who have been comforted and learned from this depiction of a situation similar to their own.

Pictures and words tell a painful but enlightened story.
Not a picture book, not a story board, and not an illustrated novel, but a book like few others in which the artist/author shares his experience by using a rich variety of visual metaphors. A powerful story painful to read and view, but in the end Alzheimer's disease becomes more real. This book will help those whose families are touched by this illness and will aid others' understanding of it.

The nu-metal guide
If you want to know where this music come from, the influences, the pioneers, the most important bands, the most important people, and an incredible amount of bands that play this music, this is your book.
You can agree or not with the author in some things like classified or not some groups as nu-metal (Nickelback a nu-metal band? hummm...), but anyway is a good guide to learn a lot about the new school metal.
The only compliment is that is from 2001, so if you buy it now (like I did) it's 2 years old and this is a lot of time in a so young music style like nu-metal is. Maybe Joel McIver is working in a update to this great book?

Nu-Metal, Nu-Outlook
I only read this book due to the fact that I enjoyed Mr. McGivers 'Extreme Metal' book so much. I do not care for Nu-Metal but despite this fact, I found this book to be a very enjoyable read as well as informative. It contains an excellent section on the origin of this genre & pays respect (or blame) where it's due. Through the pages of this Nu-Metal guide of sorts, I actually discovered several bands that I now listen to on a regular basis. Thanks for such an informative tool, Mr. McGiver. I don't believe anything else like this even exists.

The best nu-metal book I have seen!
This book rules! So many bands I never heard of, great pictures too. Long but helpful introduction telling us where nu-metal comes from. Ya gotta get this if you like any new rock band.

Must Have!!
I bought this book back in 1992 when I first became a Queen fanatic. There are some great pictures and quotes, along with kind of an abbreviated history of the band. It concludes with a list of all of Queen's music releases up until 1992. It is a beautiful book that is well worth the money. You will look at it again and again.

Absolutely fab!!
This Queen book is absolutely fabulous! It is perfect in nearly every way. It is basically a visual timeline of the band, from its subtle beginnings to its flashy end (or is it?). The pictures alone are worth the price, but the ingenius quotes from band members simply makes this one of the best Queen books available. Look for Freddie in his Superman shirt!

A Rock n' Roll extravaganza for the masses.
This book brings you right along side the band and their legendary music. If you like queen, this is a must have for your library!

Xenon: Heavy Metal Warrior

Nothing is more powerful than conviction
Resurrecting the past returns Xenon to the way he felt in Volume 2, but even he cannot stray from his goal for long. The teamwork is working and the end can be seen but Ichimura (who likely never sleeps so that he can Best Gramps) puts it all together into something that works and can be sold by the Bloody Sea. The mastermind (Kanzaki) throws another twist because 'someone' has yet to deal with their inner demons. All the questions are answered and Kanzaki (one who likes to tease the reader) ends with a new question that would make us think there is a sequel. Take Xenon's lead and come up with your own explanation because I have yet to see the sequel. Read what I said about Volume 2 and 3 - Kanzaki makes a great story and the translations are on the ball.

It takes more than one person to achieve
If chemically enhanced humans can't overcome Xenon, then overwhelm him with monsters with low IQ whose sole purpose is to destroy. Xenons and Gramps' are working together and therefore they are becoming a stronger force. Yoko and Ryuji become stronger members of the team (Ryuji is still his distant self) and they help gather information on the Bloody Sea. They begin to attack the Bloody Sea and shut down their production. Ichimura develops a new technology to find a way to beat Xenon and that means Xenon's once invincible status becomes reduced to - well - nearly invincible status :) Kanzaki does great work revealing the past / origins of Xenon, Yoko and Gramps in this volume. Gramps' old rival is Ichimura who considers defeating Xenon as a 'personal' mission (based on what is revealed) which intensifies the showdown. Kanzaki does terrific work at making it all seem real. This story goes to the next level of manga and brings in emotions of everyday life. The artwork is fluid and the translation is clear.

Using inner demons for gain
After the coming-to-grips-with-who-you-are of volume one, this book deals with using-your-inner-demons-for-rectification. If you believe every weakness can turn into a strength, Xenon is for you. Kanzaki continues to delve into his characters making it easy to identify with them or see the character in people you know. The Bloody Sea moves from a 'hitman' to an organized attack to destroy Xenon. Xenon has also improved in the way of commitment plus now he has others supporting his cause. He faces the Demon Three who is truly morally sick as they will do anything to get the upper edge. I have to say Kanzaki is gifted with creativity (and the translators were top notch). Kanzaki did a fantastic job at the artwork giving the reader nothing to impede the story. He must be extremely talented because he goes outside of the norm and simplifies his style to express the bumbling of the characters (totally unintrusive). This is the next level of manga; it goes into character depth and emotions beyond fights. I believe if you are a person who likes to be a part of the story, Xenon is perfect. This is one of the hidden gems.

Great Book
Fantastic reference. Great details and info. I wish he would write one on International Harvester.

A Good Reference for any machinery enthusiast.
I foung this book to be a very good reference for Allis Chamblers construction equiptment. While it contains little information on the AC farm tractors, this book covers nearly all of their construction equiptment. There are individual chapters for each type of equiptment, witha thoughle history of each modle. At the end of each chapter there are detailed specification sheets, as well as an apendix of serial numbers and years, so you can pinpoint your tractor's date of manufacture. The book goes gives a good history of the original company, as well as somewhat of a history of the major companies that AC bought, such as BUDA. The book also contains information on models of equiptment continued on into Fiat-Allis, such as the FA HD-31. The book covers all eqiptment, from the first early Monarch crawlers, all the way up to the giagantic HD-41's. There are chapters on industrial eqipyment, such as forklifts, and small crawlers, also inclued. If this author were to write another book like this, I would be first in line to buy it.

Big Rigs of the 1950's . A worthy follow up to 100 years.
after purchasing Ron Adams previous book 100 years of semi trucks
I was confident this latest offering would be a worthy addition to my, or any ardent truck enthusiasts book collection.
I was not dissapointed!
If you are familiar with Rons previous work you will enjoy the many photos, and good quality ones at that, included in Big Rigs of the 1950's accompanied with his usual short but interesting
brief history and comments.
Big Rigs covers all main manufacturers as well as a few lesser known brand documented in mostly black and white shots, but theres enough color plates (approx 73) to bighten up the book.
All photos are of a good size.
If you are an avid truck photographer or enthusiast of either new
or older trucking history ,in this case American, you will
appreciate this book.

Considering a tractor project? Better read this book!

Sometimes the truth hurts so bad that you just have to laugh.

I had a hard time putting this book down once I started reading. I felt Rog's pain every time he related breaking a part or smashing a finger, and shared his satisfaction with small successes.

He tells the story of the Woodpecker's resurrection with a style and wit that is down to earth; none of the "holier than thou" point of view that's found in so many other books on tractor restoration. This book is not a technical manual, and doesn't pretend to be. It's the simple, real life story of one man's victory over a piece of broken down junk.

I found it be very enjoyable reading, and would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the lighter side of life.

The Essence of Tractor Restoration

Roger Welsch's long awaited second book on tractor restoration has finally appeared. This one was written during his restoration of "Woodpecker" an old unstyled Allis Chalmers WC. The tractor was given to him by a friend after being salvaged from a remote wood lot where it had been left to die many years earlier. This was a restoration he undertook on a dare, to prove he could do it. He did it for the fun of it. Roger doesn't work at restoring tractors, he plays and learns. He finds neat little lessons all over his shop.

The book is log of his restoration efforts. He hopes to provide a newcomer with a guide of just how to expect things might go with a tractor restoration. It is full of mechanical tips and techniques as well as addressing the spiritual aspects of tractor work. He shows us how time in the shop can be healing, even when it might not appear overtly productive. His focus on the process of restoration, rather than the end results, guides his time in shop and shapes his attitude toward the whole project. Learning is not just a goal unto itself, it is also a great reason to buy even more new tools.

Many books tell us how tractors are restored, but only Roger seems to address the question of "why" tractors are restored. He truly portrays the "restoration as adventure" aspect of the hobby. The nature of the friendships that can form around this hobby is also reported.

What's different about this book? Roger Welsch examines the Zen or "head part" of tractor rebuilding. What else is different is that this book includes a lot about the wrong way to do things. The best lessons are learned from mistakes, and Roger isn't afraid to share with us how much he has learned. Additionally, he doesn't assume the reader knows as much as most of the shop manuals seem to assume. Many excellent mechanical tips can be picked up from this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and it makes me look forward to my next tractor project.
