Ozzy Knows Best: The Amazing Story of Ozzy Osbourne, from Heavy Metal Madness to Father of the Year on MTV's "The Osbournes"

Not worth the paper it is written on
Poor Ozzy (well, actually he's fabulously rich, but you know what I mean). The beast he and Sharon created with the TV show "The Osbournes" means everyone is out to cash on his new level of fame and popularity. This book is a worthless cash in on Ozzy, and it's not even very good.

Sure, there are parts of Ozzy's early years I've read about in here which I hadn't found elsewhere, but the author hasn't looked very far. This book is a rehashing of other biographies, quotes from magazine articles, and observations of "The Osbournes" TV show. It smacks of being thrown together as quickly as possible. The author repeats some points ad nauseum, and there are even factual errors in it (the book says Metallica opened for Ozzy in 1983, when in fact this did not happen until 1986).

If you're interested in Ozzy, buy something else.

Buy a different Ozzy biography.
This book is a repetative waste of time full of sentences and paragraphs that begin, for no apparent reason, with the word "And" or "But". The Ozzy and family exploits are mentioned over and over throughout. Between exploits there is only Chris Nixons' gushing tribute to what a great father/husband/person Ozzy is now that he's concured drugs and alcohol. I enjoyed the Ozbournes on MTV. I didn't need a recap.

Same old, same old.
This book is like all the other unauthorized Ozzy books, with slight variation. If you are interested in reading about Ozzy, try "Ozzy in his own words", at least it is more accurate and truthful, not hearsay and taken from context in interviews. Dont get me wrong, this wasn't particularly a bad read, just a been there, done that type thing. It is VERY similiar to Sue Crawfords book, except this was a bit more "fun", meaning it has fact pages of each family member, it has quotes, it has quizzes, make for a little more interesting of a read if you are going to read the same stuff you have read before. This book happens to have more information on "The Osbornes" the MTV smash hit than Sue Crawfords book too.

left out some bands
how could sleep be a runner up and blink 182 have a whole page? i also did not see candlemass in there either. i am glad i only spent $5 on it there is a nice page on sabbath

Bad Data and worse taste
Just to let you know, I am a trivia freak. I love collecting useless information and storing it away waiting for the moment to dazzle someone with my knowledge of useless information. That being said, this book is full of errors...Here is a (very condensed) list of errors that I found:
1. On the Type O Negative page it states that their album called "The Origin of the Feces" is a live album when it is not. Granted, it is made to sound like a live album, but it is not, and 2 minutes of research this could have been cleared up.
2. On the Cult page, it said that they (The Cult) had an infleuence on Sound Garden. I don't know about you, I don't know of Sound Garden....I have heard of a little band called Soundgarden (one word).
3. On the Cradle of Filth page, it mentions an album called Bitter Suites to the Succubi....when it should be "Bitter Suites to Succubi."
4. On the Ratt page, it mentions a band called Kixx....maybe they meant Kix.
5. On the Queensryche page, it named an album called Hear in the new frontier.....again...no such album...it is called "Hear in the Now frontier."
So you can see my frustration...these are examples from bands that I know something about. What about the bands that I'm unfamiliar with. I don't want to be filled with bad information when I try to learn about other bands for the first time.

Oh yeah...one more thing...what the hell is up with Opeth getting 1/4 of a page when Limp Bizkit, Blink 182 and other such suckass bands get their own page, full color etc. It's a good thing that I really never read Metal Hammer magazine (Chris Ingham does something for them..I can't remember what it is...but instead of guessing and being wrong, I'll just let you know that I don't know)....If I did, I probably wouldn't know one thing about real metal...(at least anything true)

Suggestion
I found this book to be lacking. For those who want to read a great book on heavy metal. I suggest "Bang your Head - The Rise and Fall of Heavy Metal" by David Konow on Three Rivers Press, a division of Random House publishing.

You mean I can't give this zero stars?
I own this book because I am a collector of Iron Maiden. I would not recommend this book to anyone who wants the guitar tablatures.
The tabs are written for a single guitar, and are not remotely accurate. While the collection of songs in this book is impressive, I would recommend any other tablature book instead of this one.

Terrible
I've been playing guitar for 30 years and, as a hobby, I collect tablature. This tab book is simply the worst I've seen. Most of the riffs are not tabbed, none of the solos are. The basic chord structure is given and that's it. Heck, even some of the lyrics are wrong. The Iron Maiden Tab books that followed are excellent and very accurate. I keep hoping for new, revised edition of this book. No such luck, though.

NOT WORTH IT!!
I was very unimpressed when I opened this book. Im a lead guitarist and I've played for 8 years. This has no solo arrangements and not all the riffs are tabbed. I enjoyed the interview and thats about it. I probably learned about 3-5 song but I couldnt learn the whole song cuz none of the songs are tabbed all the way through. This is not worth your money.

Read "LAYNE STALEY: Angry Chair" instead
Need I mention how bad this book is? Just look at the ranking. If you like grunge and what to read a cool story...buy Layne's bio, "LAYNE STALEY: ANGRY CHAIR" and learn some valuable, interesting things. Please don't ever tell anyone you bought this Nirvana, Grunge book...that would be an embarassment.

Reprints of covers ... that's it
I was quite dissapointed. This book is just a collection of covers. There are no additional material, early sketches, the process involved etc.

Most of the covers are reproduced in smaller formats i.e. up to 4 covers cramped in a page. I thought thet each cover would occupy at least a page or reproduced in a larger format but sadly, this is not the case.

It would be better if the cover art were produced in its original form i.e. no text or logos to deface it.

On a positive note, there are some artists which I never thought have contributed a cover e.g. Dave Dorman.

Unimpressed
This book is basically a photo album of personal pictures taken by veterans and their friends during the war. As you can imagine, these photos vary in quality from very blurred to ok, plus there are a handful of official propaganda photos shot by the Whermacht which are the clearest.

This book does not go into details of the various motorcycles used, the theatres they were used in or how they were viewed by the men who rode them. Each photo has a few lines of text which all sound very much the same after a few pages (e.g. 'This is a BMW R75', or 'This is a Zundapp', etc., although how the author can tell the difference and recognise the model of cycle from the blurred photos is beyond me!).

The only think I did like about this book was it's brief explanation on the heating system used on some models of motor cycle and the diagrams used (obviously from the cycle's user manual).

This isn't all that great...
If you love Nirvana and you're looking for a cheap alternative to buying each individual guitar book than this is a good choice. Except, you'll get a very cheap product. This book is ok for piano players, horrible for guitar players, and ok on vocals. It is missing the song "Son Of A Gun" on Incesticide and does not contain "Plateau" "Oh, Me" or "Lake of Fire" from MTV Unplugged. It has basic guitar chords but I have found that many songs are written inaccuratly. Over all, don't buy it. You'll like for the first couple days, then once you go through it a bit more you'll want to return it because it is misguiding and frustrating. It's only use is for the lyrics...maybe.

Not much new here!
I bought this book hoping to glean more information than what was available in the smallish books provided with the game. Disappointment abounds! This book is nothing more than the manual included with the game, in a larger size book. The exact same descriptions of weapons, gears, and game play. No extra strategy tips on how to build new gears, a very small inadequate section on combat, and not much else. There is, however, a walkthrough of the 32(?) missions of the "Story" version of the game - that's about all you get.

No Cletrac info.
I bought this book because I thought it would contain information about Cletrac tractors. From the title you would think so. I was very disapointed to find that there were only two pictures of one Cletrac tractor (Actually an Oliver as the tractor pictured was made after the oliver take over) There was only one page of text (of the most superficial sort). From my point of view this purchess was a total loss. The book title is not at all representative of its content, at least as far as Cletrac tractors are conscerned

Avoid This Crap At All Costs
Rarely do I make the time to review a book that I have read but given the absolute total lack of any and all value that this so called book contains I felt the need to save others the ten bucks. After reading several books on this topic, I can confidently state it is the worst book EVER put together on the subject. I do not beleive that either author, Mr. Blake or Mr. John, have ever attended a metal performance, listened to a metal album (ok, maybe an Extreme album) or spoke to a fan, or even to a critic, of the genre. All of the notes in the book refer to internet references. In other words, if there is a positive spin to put on this book it is that you can sit at home, choose a topic at random, search the internet and put together a book which some clueless publisher (in this case Michael O'Mara Books) will distribute. If I had not bought this book on amazon and picked it up in a store I would have realized there was trouble by the titles of the authors' other books, "101 Really Unpleasant Things About Men" and The Little Book Of Great Ideas." Here is a great idea, don't buy this book. Here is another great idea for the authors, don't "write" anymore books about things you know absolutely nothing about. You ever read about Darwinism? Think about it . . .
