A definite for the Zep fanatic
I too was once a Led Zeppelin fanatic. I bought anything and everything that began with the letters "L" and "Z"...including this book.

It's not bad. It's not great, but it's not bad. The book is a collection of quotes from Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham on a variety of subjects ranging from music to their well known problems with the music press to life on the road etc, etc. The topics don't get much heavier than that although that's not a big deal. I mean, does anyone really care what John Bonham has to say about the state of international affairs? I don't think so. At the end are a few sanctimonious quotes from Robert Plant about no man being an island and Jimmy Page saying that he's searching for an angel with a broken wing.

Whatever. Judging by the age of some of his girlfriends I'd say he spent most of his time looking for her at the local Jr. High School.

Anyway, the biggest flaw with this book is that there are no dates accompanying the quotations. So you don't really get a feel for how the band members grew or progressed as people as they got richer, older and supposedly wiser. Bad omission by the editors.

If you love Zep the way I used to love them, buy this. If you're just a casual fan then stick w/the music.

Worth while!
This book includes exciting insite into the band. Zeppelin gave so few interviews during their years together. "In Their Own Words" gives one the feeling of having the inside track on what the guys were really all about.

EXCELLENT BOOK!
This book is great, because it is TRUE! It really IS in there own words! The book starts from the beginning of the forming of the band, even before Led Zeppelin, and continues past Robert, Jimmy & JPJ's solo work,up until the reunion of Page & Plants long waited for reunion tour, in 1995. There are also quotes in here from their late manager Peter Grant. But you get MORE than THAT! You get LOADS of pictures throughout the WHOLE book, pictures taken all through a 30 year time span. Many pictures I have never seen before, (and I though I've seen them all)!
Also! Did you ever wonder what the song "Thats the Way" is about? I always did! To my surprise, Robert explains it in this book! (and I'm so relieved) Other songs too! and about ALL their albums & movie.
This is a GREAT reference book! Great to show all your Zep Head friends, and discuss! I just have 2 questions I cannot find anywhere, and if anyone knows the answers please send me an I.M. on aol instant messenger! #1 What is Robert Plants Exact hight and approximate weight? #2 What size are his tight hip hugger jeans?! LOL! (I'm female, I saw him in 2nd row on the floor EXACTLY 1 year ago today, and he smiled at me 3x, I threw him a gift, he was flattered)! He was GREAT, even without Jimmy-he has a unique, mysterious, intriguing style & talent that is all his own. BUY THIS book, not the other books full of lies!

Good ideas, but terribly written
There are some ideas that I agree with in Ambrose's "Moshpit: The Violent World of Mosh Pit Culture". I agree with his statement that "Moshing is a ritualized and furious form of dancing combining very real violence with remarkable displays of emotion...". I agree with statements like that, but there are some problems with this book that almost drive the reader to put it down and stop reading. Ambrose's constant misspelling of words like realize (he spells it realise) and organize (organise as Ambrose would put it) that is both distracting and irritating. Then there are things like this: "It was cool for Soulfly in particular, as Max Cavalera quick marched from Sepultura's 15 years of achievement and heritage." Quick marched? I believe he means quickly marched. And I'm not one to say that just because you write a book that you should be perfect, but when a book is published I believe it should as perfect as possible. What the heck is an editor for? This book feels more like a first draft rather than the published shelf version.

Moshpit Editor's response
I am the London-based editor of Moship Culture by Joe Ambrose and I take exception to the comments of your reviewer in Pocatello, Idaho. In the UK, where this book was originated, 'realise' is spelt thus, as is 'organise'; indeed, almost all those verbs that end in -ize in the US end in -ise in the language of the country where it was first written and spoken. 'Quick march' is a common phrase here. Comments like this reflect a deep ignorance of language on the part of this reviewer.

An Englishman replies
I found this thought-provoking, interesting, an essential read about contemporary music styles and what it means to be a fan. Your reviewer from Pocatello needs to know that 'realise' and 'organise' are the recognised English spellings of these words (as is 'recognised' by the way). In addition, 'quick march' is a English expression. There are other forms of the language besides the one adapted for American usage. If your reviewer is uncertain of England's location, I suggest he/she logs on to Amazon again and buys an atlas.

A Very Entertaining Book
Popoff continues to entertain those of us out there who still care about heavy metal. Even though I am now in my 30's I still love to read about my favorite metal groups. This book contains the results of a massive poll with Martin's comments about each song as well as comments from the band members themselves. There are also several top ten lists from various musicians as well as several album covers. I must admit that I don't care for some of the bands that made the top of the list but that's to be expected. As long as many of my favorites (Accept, BOC, Savatage, Schenker) are represented, I'm satisifed. This book is definitely worth buying if you like various kinds of metal and you want to know what other metal heads think are the best metal songs ever.

Attention librarians: Heavy Metal reference material!
Headbangers everywhere should throw horns in praise of Martin Popoff, possibly the only person writing about metal these days who offers so much encyclopedic knowledge and insight into the workings of the genre without intellectualizing it to the point of alienating fans. Key to Popoff's success is his all-inclusive approach to the genre. While he does differentiate between sub-genres, he maintains that heavy metal is overdriven guitars, bass, drums, and volume, volume, VOLUME. Thus you will find entries in his many books for seemingly non-metal acts as Black Flag, Sweet, and Nirvana. For Popoff, it's all about the MUSIC. The writing here is top notch as usual-Popoff using wordplay that at times only diehards will appreciate (describing one tune as "Heep Purple" while another band "goes for baroque"-- love it!). The only factor detracting from this work is the relatively predictable collection of songs found within. There are no surprises here for the long-time fan. This is of course, out of Popoff's control, as these stats resulted from an honest-to-God poll of metal muthas' all-time fave rave-ups. So librarians: Purchase this book for your reference collection. It is an excellent example of authority-by-community, organized and packaged by possibly the most authoritative person on the subject. And while you're at it, pick up Popoff's "Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal" too. Both works are indispensible reference material.

Provides important keys to understanding the genre
Fans of heavy metal music who seek a definitive guide to albums and songs will find Martin Popoff's Top 500 Heavy Metal Songs Of All Time to be an important key to the genre, compiling the results of a massive worldwide poll and including entries which feature a quote from one of the band's artists, shots of rare singles covers, and listings by song, band, album, year and country. Descriptions of the music are both personal and critical and provide important keys to understanding the genre.

Arlen Roth's Heavy Metal Guitar

THE SAD TRUTH ABOUT THIS BOOK!
In my opinion this book has very little to do with heavy metal guitar. The author places heavy emphasis on the blues, and blues influence in modern rock music. The fourth chapter titled"The influence of early rock and blues" which is 33 pages long tells the reader all about people such as Robert Johnson,Otis Rush,Buddy Guy,B.B. King, and mike Bloomfield. The author goes on to tell the reader in chapter six entitled"Early heavy metal lead guitar" about such people as Jimmy Page,Jimi hendrix, and Eric Clapton. There are some exercises and other lessons that are covered such as basic power chords,"whammy" bar exercises, basic rock/blues scales, and some other stuff. There is NO mention of bands like Black Sabbath,Motorhead,Metallica,Slayer,or any of the other great metal bands that(for me) come to mind when I think of heavy metal guitar. This is a great book if you want to learn about how the blues influenced rock, and learn a little blues guitar while your at it.

Prepare to be a shredder!
Arlen Roth has once again created a classic guitar book, this time around undoubtedly his best yet. Whether you're an experienced guitarist or have never picked up a guitar book expect to be shredding your neck before long! Roth teaches you all the techniques for break neck spead axe thrashing in the method of Van Halen, Hammett, Page, and all the metal greats. Even if you're not a metalhead, this book is highly recommended as it teaches you techniques that can be used beyond metal. Highly recommended!

Killer Book!!!
This Book tought me everything from easy scales too tapping and forming a band. A must for beginners

A must read for anyone who owns or operates "eucs".
I've thoroughly enjoyed reading Orlemann's book. As both a user and a fan of "green iron", I'm glad someone went through all the work to research the subject. Although it reads a bit on the dry side, the detailed technical data is appreciated. The most pressing questions I had, such as what happened to the Terex line and why, are sufficiently addressed by Orlemann. He also covers the transformation of Euclid from a family owned and operated company to GM's heavy equipment division. To top it all off, there is a chapter on prototypes that never made it to production, including 92 series trackloaders and an 82-30C.

A must read book for any owner of Euclid/Terex equipment
I found this book to be quite informative from the beginnings of Euclid to the present day Terex. With a heavy emphasis on such machines as the 82-80 Super Dozer, the famous Titan as well as a definitive account of the entire scraper line, this book was easy reading for any earthmoving enthusiast. The book did tend to bog down a little with product id numbers I also wish it would have explored the competitions role of how euclid evolved into a major player on the heavy equipment marketplace. The pictures were as good as it gets with many action shots as well as great factory pics. As someone who owns mostly caterpillar equipment but no Terex,I still found this book to be very concise and most facinating.I highly recomend this book for anyone with interest in this subject matter.

Euclid as you have never seen it
This book does a very fine job of chronicling the history of Euc and Terex from the start of the companies to the last round of buyouts and mergers. Although it doesn't do a complete job bringing the equipment into present day, it had to stop somewhere. It does however mention the present day incarnations of these machines.

Any fan of the "Green Weenies" will love all the data presented here. There is a complete description of the Euclid numbering system. Pictures of experimental models that will make you wonder "What were they thinking?" Some of the old pictures that have been found in the Euc archives probably didn't reproduce the color as well as one would have hoped. However they are pictures of machines that you will probably never see again. Well worth the effort to produce what was done. Newer color pictures are of the high standard that one would expect from this author.

I have used this book as reference guide so many times that it has become indespensible.

Another fine job by Eric C Orlemann

Interesting, but not all the songs play well

This book consists of 12 songs: One, Harvester of Sorrow, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Nothing Else Matters, The Unforgiven, Enter Sandman, Until It Sleeps, Fade to Black, Seek and Destroy, The Thing That Should Not Be, Sad But True and Mama Said.

Basically, some of the songs play a lot better than others. The more recent ballads like NEM and Unforgiven are excellent on the piano, but Harvester, Seek and Thing just don't really translate well to the keyboard.

I think you'll enjoy at least half of this collection if you like Metallica and you've played the piano for at least a couple of years. It's not beginner music, but most of it is fairly straightforward to play. I was a bit disappointed at the transcription of some of the solos -- they leave some of them out -- then again, they were meant for guitar and not piano.

Jammin' out on Metallica
This music book is well transcribed for the piano. Great for intermediate to advanced players that really like to rock-out on the piano (or keyboard) to the hard-hitting full power chords of Metallica. Follows the riffs and guitar sequences right along with the cd. Most are written in the same key that the band plays in, and if not, it tells you what the difference is. I love it. Who says you can't play heavy metal on a piano? :)

Nice Photos...Well Presented
Unfortunately thats about it. A better title would be Caterpillar Bulldozers (and a few others). There is no mention of Euclid, Dresser, Allis Chalmers etc. Nevertheless, a worthwhile book.

If you like it when the earth moves, get this book!
This book is a great one for enthsuiasts of big, ol' earth moving machines. The photos make the book one you want to keep out for your friends

Best for the rare Sabbath pix
One thing that needs to mentioned is the rarity of the Black Sabbath pictures included. I've been a Sabbath collector for years, and have not seen most of the pictures included--live, backstage, and photo-shoot settings. Many of them are of Tony Iommi (Ozzy's arch-enemy of old), as it happens.
As far as the actual commentary on the songs, in this subject matter it is hard to tell what is truly legitimate. Manipulated statements and entirely invented statements abound in the music journalism industry, so you have to take that at face value. Some comments attributed to Ozzy are rather articulate (not his style), and therefore one would have to wonder if they are really his own.
There is one GLARING mistake in the pictures which tends to sap the already-low credibility from a publication of this sort: a photo of Brad Gillis (brief Ozzy guitarist) is next to a photo of Dave Spitz (brief Sabbath bassist), and the caption below them reads something to the effect of "Brad Gillis was replaced by Jake E. Lee", implying that the photo of Dave Spitz is really Jake E. Lee (which is strange since Dave is clearly holding a bass guitar!).
This book is great for the rare old pictures, but it is still nothing more than one of a million books of questionable accuracy put together by bandwagon-jumping "authors" who most likely have little idea of who or what they're talking about and are trying to cash in on a current fad.

Good Things Come in Glossy Packages.
First and foremost, this book is a glossy, photo-packed, coffee-table tome. I originally purchased it because I was hoping for in-depth, analytical breakdowns of Ozzy's songs by himself and his band members. I didn't quite get it.

While there are plenty of Ozzy, Sabbath and other quotes, they're pretty much the same ones we've been hearing for years. It also only covers Ozzy's hit standards (i.e. Crazy Train, War Pigs, NIB). None of my favorites were covered, but I can't blame the author for that, I suppose. It also covered the infamous (and so, so tired) stories of the bat, the Alamo, the doves.

The saving grace of this book is the photos. It's absolutely overflowing with awesome pics of Ozzy, Sabbath, Randy Rhoades, Zakk Wylde and other band members. A lot of these photos are pretty rare, and I'm sure some of them are never-before-seen.

It's not too shabby in the writing department either. Clerk is a lucid and fun author, and the format of the book is very eye-catching. The pages are multi-colored, the title fonts are trippy, and in every chapter, there's a paragraph that has been written backwards and upside down faintly apparent in the background (a shoutout to all those who believe in subliminal messages). The editors did an outstanding job of making it enjoyable to read, but not silly and overloaded with visuals.

Price is very good, and the book isn't a disappointment for what it is. I'm very pleased with it. An essential for any Ozzy fan.

keep shopping, this ain't it!
what a waste of money. this book does not contain any real information at all. basicly you could sum it up in one sentence: make a molotov-cocktail and burn it. my mom could have told me that

Taking out Big Brother from a brother in arms
Toward the beginning of Chapter one Benson reminds us that those who do not read and heed history are doomed to repeat it. Then he goes on to give a few historical examples where outnumbered citizens and soldiers were able to repel invaders and inflict serious damage as well, aided at least, by low tech weapons. Using the battle of Verdun and a few others as examples, he also reminds us that if you have a lot of heart, using archaic methods against superior weapons will do you no good at all. That isn't pie in the sky advice at all or contrary to the premise of the book either. Right up front he tells you that you need weapons. Then he goes on to tell you what weapons are useful and either how to make them or where to find the informtion so you can. Along the way, Benson gives examples of skirmishes here and there or situations that arose in his own experience and what was done there. Perhaps not the history we read about in school, but nevertheless, the kind of thing we should pay attention to. He goes on to describe some of the fine points re Molotov cocktails and makes sure the reader knows there is far more to it than what can be said in a few pages. He also covers flame throwers, claymore mines, how to generate smoke, using two-way radios and a wealth of other obscure information to the fledgling. Essential how to on self defense. This is a very informative book, and the information is given in a thought provoking manner. The Loompanics site has many surprising books or you can order from 8003802230.

This book is a treat for the information seeker!
What can I say? Ragnor Benson delivers heart-stoping information again. Inside of a book with a plain cover, Ragnor proves that age-old theroy that you just cannot judge a book by it's cover.

Based upon the experinces of Washinton insiders, Benson debates that ever-controversial topic of warfare stratagy. As Benson puts the skin on the bones with information that can be found nowhere else, the reader is catapulted into a sea of informative, yet entertaining and thought-provoking.

In one word: Excellence!
