The Heavy Cruiser Takao (Anatomy of the Ship)
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (August, 1994)
Amazon base price: $37.95
Average review score:

My Thoughts (for whatever they're worth)Janusz Skulski's second contributation to the "Anatomy of the Ship" series, I thought that this was a bit more polished than the "Yamato" volume. These two books together are one of the best English-language resources (that I am aware of) for WWII Japanese navy vessels. This book has everthing; from profiles of the ship as it appeared in its career, down to the rivet patterns used to assemble the hull, all in scaled drawings.
The Best Book by SkulskiJanusz Skulski is probably one of the foremost IJN experts outside of Japan and his books are known for their meticulous research and first class drawings. Skulski uses sources in Japan with ties to the IJN and this is reflected in his books. This effort on the cruiser Takao is probably his best effort, with more information than the Yamato book (of course, the Yamato was sunk and information on her is sparse-Takao survived the war, albeit in a damaged state) and none of the editing flaws which marred his latest book on the Fuso.
The drawings are worth the price of the book and contain enough information for the modeler to scratchbuild or improve the only Takao model on the market, which is a pretty bad one. A must for any ship modeler or historian, especially since the only other book comparable to this one is written in Japanese.

'70s Sleaze At Its FinestThis may not be the king of 1970s trash novels, but it's pretty close. I owned a copy of this when I was a teenager in the '70s, and I fondly remember it as the only book my parents ever made me burn. Follow the adventures of the chronically ... teenage trash-goddess, Shannon, as she kidnaps a rich man's son and simultaneously sleeps with everything in sight. The language is hip, it's happening, it's NOW (if "now" is the 1970s). Okay, it's dated as hell...but it's still an eye-opener. Easy reading. It could be read in a day. Still a bit mind-blowing after all these years, if only for its pure sleaziness.
Super 70's exploitation book.Sixteen year old Valley Girl Shannon decides to run a heavy number on a capitalist pig's son in Beverly Hills. Beats Laura Palmer hands down for demented teenage girl ring leader. Gave me the major willies, and loved all the similarities to Patty Hearst. Am I wrong for liking this?

It feels like an older sister is coaching me to blossom!Judy Hollis candidly shares a lifetime of personal and professional experiences in this manual for women seekers. Somehow, I never ran into a sister, friend or slumber-party pal who says it like it is...or could be... when women indulge in the pleasures of food and sex for nourishment, without guilt. I'm savoring every page; thanks judy!
learning alot about myselfDr Hollis's book was fascinating. It isnt just some diet book, its a personal journey. I learned alot about myself.

Very nice with hard covers and glossy heavy weight paperThis book is a reprint of a book first published in 1944 utilizing personnel on active duty to put the book togeather. I do not see where the Publisher can claim Copyright on the contents, because the personnel who worked on the book were paid by the Military. In addition, this Group was not known as " The Jolly Rogers " until after July 8, 1943 when Col. Rogers first assumed command, and an enlisted man came up with the designation. The hype about the publicity starting in September 1942 is incorrect and detracts from the real value of the book. In fact, the first combat missions by this group were made in November of 1942. September and October of that year were spent in Hawaii in training and intensive long range patrols, which resulted in no Combat with enemy forces. If those discrepancies were cleared up, then I think any purchasers would indeed be fully satisfied.
Great book on an often overlooked bomber groupMy dad was in the 90th bomb group and contributed some material to this publication...he painted the nose art on the "DUDE" which is pictured in the book....it also covers a lot on the B-24 which often took a back seat to the B-17 in recognition....

Great book for modelers! This book is an invaluable source of information for plastic modelers building the German Tiger II.Color illustrations together with cutaway drawings provide accurate details of the interior layout of the tank. For future reference to the author, the addition of RAL numbers of paint colors as indexed to the colors in the illustrations in the book would be a possible improvement to be considered on this work.
A TII book friendly to your pocketThis book is a small gem. Reference on this tank is as complete as can be packed in 48 pages. Not only development history is included, but also are packed gun tables, direct comparisons to opposite tanks, and unit history with order of battle. Unless you plan to buy Jentz and Hillary more complete books, this is a must for the modeller and historian!

Klimentei Voroshilovs tanks!!!I found this book very informative on a series of thanks that fascinates me. It offers some new pictures, diagrams and data that Ive never seen before and thats always a welcome thing to have. The book itself is well written and takes a stage-by-stage look at the evolution of Soviet tank designs with the Land Battleships and how the Finish War saw the enterance of these vehicles. The only minus side that I could think of was the book seems to centre itself around the KV-1 and neglect the KV-2 a little. Apart from that fact, its a brilliant buy (for price & quality) so if anyone is interested in these tanks, id reccomend this book!
A good introduction to Soviet heavy tanksThe book studies the development and use of heavy tanks by the USSR during WW2. The main tank used was the KV-1 and its numerous derivatives, a machine which the Germans found impossible to destroy during the early years of the war. The KV series were replaced by the JS series of heavy tanks and this is also indicated in Mr Zaloga's book.I found the book interesting because it gave some insight into Soviet defence planning during wartime. There are also photographs of prototype tanks which have never been usedand never published before. This is no doubt the result of the changed international environment. I found this book interesting and full of facts and the colour plates, photograghs and line drawings good illustrations of the subject of the book.

Becoming a nurse by character buildingThis is a delightful book telling the story of a young girl from a relatively sheltered background who undergoes nursing training in America before WWII. The story follows her growth both as a nurse and as a person, including special friendships with other young nurses (Abbie, the accident prone), encounters with especially memorable patients (the young and precocious, the mad and the terminally ill), with older, more experienced colleagues (Gertrude, the imposing Sister) and with a certain young Intern, James Alcott; all of whom shape this young woman's character. It is an amusing, thought-provoking and interesting testimony to long days of hard work and study, and to nurses in general. Highly recommended.
A Lamp Is HeavyThis forthright book had a seminal influence on my life. I read it when I was 13 and it cleared the path for me. The book challenges many conventional ideas and, in a compelling way, emphasizes one's need and right to choose a lifework and an intensely personal philosophy. It continues to resonate for me many years later. The setting and action are accurate and act as a sensitive foil for the message it so well delivers. I reread it again this year and was pleased to see that the book has survived time's passage.

Very funny with interesting charactersThis is my first P.G. Wodehouse book. I liked the stories so much that I immediately bought another of his books. The plots are amusing, but the characters are the center of the book. Lord Emsworth is described as a man who "never experienced the thirll of ambition fullfilled, ... but never knew the agony of ambition frustrated". Another very interesting character, Mr. Peters, who belongs to a group of men who "... cannot rest, who are so constituted that they can only take their leisure in the shape of a change of work". Interestingly, their personalities evolve as the story unfolds. Wodehouse satire excludes no one not even writers. He writes, "The reason why all we novelists with bulging foreheads an expensive educations are abandoning novels and taking to writing motion-picture secnarii is because the latter are so infinitely the more simple and pleasant". I also enjoyed his reference to the critics in the preface of "Summer Lightning".
It's certainly a very entertaining book, with a lot of opportunities for vocabulary building. I would recommend this book for students of English as a second language.
wonderfully funny novels by a master of humorThe three novels in this volume are three of the first four novels in P G Wodehouse's great Blandings Castle series (the other is Leave It to Psmith). Something Fresh isn't quite as good as Summer Lightning and Heavy Weather, because that memorable pig, the Empress of Blandings, has not yet appeared at the Castle. Heavy Weather takes place immediately after Summer Lightning, and the two are, in my opinion, two of Wodehouse's very best. Some of the great Wodehouse characters are here - the woolly-headed Ninth Earl of Emsworth, his sister, Lady Constance, and brother, The Honorable Galahad Threepwood, not to mention, among others, The Efficient Baxter. Not to be missed by anybody with a sense of humor.

Great art, but not really appropriate for an officeRoyo is a great artist, but most of the pictures selected for this calendar are just too racy (explicit) for an office environment. I'm going to have to find another calendar now... :( (But I'll keep this one in my Royo collection for sure.)
Dark FantasyAnother excellant addition to my Royo collection. Full color prints with an apocalyptic style. Four have a demonic influence, the rest with post-holocaustical themes.
