Mission 85, a milk run that turned sour

A great book about a supposedly insignificant mission
Mission 85. August 19, 1943. Eighth Air Force, ETO. Few have heard of Mission 85. The previous 8th AF mission, Mission 84, was two days earlier on August 17 - a combined raid to bomb aircraft and ball bearing factories in Regensburg and Schweinfurt: perhaps the most renowned raid by the Eighth Air Force during the war: one with horrendous losses of aircrews. Mission 85 was to be a milk run. The Mighty Eighth had incurred so many losses on August 17, the Combat Wing flew with two of its Groups comprised of Composite Groups. The only intact Group was made up of three Squadrons of the 303rd BG. The targets for the day were Gilze-Rijen and Flushing airfields in Holland. Author de Jong has researched this mission in great detail and presents it in a large format and most readable fashion. The planning of the raid is developed and illustrated. He emphatically demonstrates in his material that there were no milk runs. Danger and losses were always present. Every raid had its unique outcome. In this book, the planning and operational details of the mission are painstakingly researched and presented, allowing the reader to become immersed in the action as it occurs. After laying out the combat history of the Eighth Air Force and the plans for Mission 85, de Jong details the diversionary raids of that days, the fighter sweeps, and the response of the Germans. Personal interviews throughout the book add fascinating stories and depth to the entire volume. The author has produced a most thorough story of one supposedly insignificant raid of the Eighth Air Force, emphasizing within it the fact that each raid affected airmen and civilians of both sides in a most unforgettable manner. Few, if any, volumes allow the reader to become a participant in a mission as this one does. The author has done all the research and the legwork for you, and presents it to the reader so he may feel the effects. The appeal is there for the younger generation as well for every airman who flew into the dangers of air combat. High quality large photos throughout and a large slick-page format make this book most pleasurable to read.

Well-written & illustrated gem of useful and clever tricks!
I have owned and used and loved this book for years, and have given copies to good friends because I knew they'd love it too.

The anecdotes the author uses to explain the ingenious tools and techniques people have come up with to "move their heavy things", are so well written and sometimes humorous you'll find yourself reading them just for entertainment, even if you never have a need to move anything. With drawings as witty as the writing, this book honors the ingenuity of our forebears, before the age of the hydraulic brutes that do all our work for us today. Farmers, sailors, pioneers, builders of all kinds, have solved these problems, and this book passes on this clever heritage.

The pen and ink drawings are entertaining, and illustrate clearly how these tools and techniques work. One beauty is the trick of standing a tombstone up on ice cubes to facilitate positioning it over its base stone as the ice melts... without a scratch!

Adkins outlines a number of principles our grandfathers followed to arrive at elegant solutions, while minimizing sweat and risk of injury. Two of my favorites are "Applied Sloth" and "The Geezer Ploy". I could go on, but why give away too much? Treat yourself or your favorite "mover of heavy things" to this little gem. It's worth every penny! I tried to buy a copy a few years ago, but was told it was out of print. I'm delighted to see it available again. I have a few more friends in mind...

Warm and Sentimental
A great book of a time when our cause was so noble and the sacrifices so great. With gratitude we think of all those who
did their best and left a noble legacy of the United States Of America for the rest of the world. Without that effort the world would not be as great as it is. Make no mistake the seeds of our goodwill were sown forever by those who fought that battle.

Les claypool revealed!!
This book is a much needed explination of the insanity of Les Claypool's bass style. His slap bass style with bits of tapping, usually on a 5 string bass, occasionally fretless. I have been trying for years to decifer les's music, and now it's finally possible. worth every penny and every second of practice. This is perfect for any primus fan who is instrumental, but be warned, Les' music "is!" as hard to play as it sounds. Have fun.

Great guide to get into new metal
This is great book that explores the roots of the nu-metal from its very beginning, giving a large explanation of the genres that created this type of music (rock 'n roll, rock, heavy metal, rap, hip-hop, reggae, etc) and the most influencial people and bands in all this music styles, from so-different names like Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Clash, George Clinton, Africa Bambaataa, Basement 5, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthrax, Rage Against the Machine to today's big nu-metal scene names like KoRn, LimpBizkit, Slipknot, Linkin' Park or Papa Roach.

The book's title may confuse you but this book is not too particulary oriented to explain the roots of rapcore but the whole (and not very defined) genre of nu-metal (but, of course, rapcore is the most important sub-genre). It clearly explains where this music comes from, maybe so deeply that sometimes, specially at the beginning of the book, you think 'This book is really about metal?' because it really go deep into the history of the main influences of this music such as metal and rap.

Moreover, you must read it a couple of times if you want to catch all the information it has: albums, bands, names, dates...it's a really large compilation of data to take it all in just one reading.
'Rapcore, The Nu-Metal Rap Fusion' is probably the most complete guide you could find nowadays about the new school metal and all his sub-genres, of course specially the most important of all: the rap-metal/rapcore or whatever you wanna call it.

awesome art
This book had the best black and white sketches. Serpieri has a great eye for detail. I recommend this book to all of the art fans out there. His sketches are exotic and realistic. He has an act for bringing out the real beauty in a woman. The pictures are very passionate and sensual.
