Beautiful!
I came across this book in the bookstore today and knew that I had to have it as soon as I saw the cover. I was very familiar with the song, but had no idea there was a book based on it. The pictures are perfect for the song! The book is very, very nicely done. It was an added bonus that there was a CD and musical score included. I came home with two copies.

Caldecott Material
"Sunshine on my Shoulders" is a beautiful song of the seventies which has been captured perfectly by Christopher Canyon's bright and warm illustrations. One can feel the sun bathing the two characters as they enjoy a summer afternoon. I have been a fan of Canyon's nature illustrations, but "Sunshine" is by far his best effort yet. Members of the Caldecott commitee should take notice.

exceptional
When I first heard of this project, which had John Denver's blessing before his death, I was excited, but unsure that any illustrator could do justice to John's songs. Christopher Canyon has perfectly incorporated the love of children and of nature that John Denver shared in his music. Now I'm looking forward to all the books in this series. Great work, Dawn Publications.I was so overwhelmed by the copies I'd bought for my grandchildren, I turned around and bought one for my friend who, like me, remembers John Denver's lessons daily, and misses his voice always...

Over the Shoulder : A Novel of Intrigue

"That I am a nobody doesn't bother me as it might some people. I prefer anonymity, unobstructed movement through a crowd with neither a first nor a second glance in my direction." Anonymity is both existential goal and survival skill for Allen Choice, who may call himself a Korean-American but who isn't particularly comfortable with the label. A Silicon Valley security specialist (don't call him a bodyguard), Choice drifts through life the way he drifts through crowds: detached, isolated, neither particularly fulfilled nor particularly unhappy. He notes wryly, "I used to think I was in inertial rest, a body at rest remaining so. Once an outside force applied itself to me, I would be in motion. I liked this idea. It freed me, relieving me of the responsibility. I just had to wait for an outside force. But I soon realized this was an illusion... I decided to call it the inertial deception. I can't succumb to it."

But in Over the Shoulder, Leonard Chang's brooding neo-noir novel, circumstances conspire to administer an outside force of momentous proportions when Paul Baumgartner, Choice's partner, is killed in front of him. Paul's family, his employers, and the police all assume the hit was directed at the executive the pair were protecting. But Linda Maldonado, a reporter looking for a hot story to catapult her from the thigh cream comparisons and doggy-daycare features of the Lifestyles pages, hectors Choice into investigating Paul's death.

His investigation is quickly fractured by treachery and deception, as he uncovers strange links between Paul's death and that of his own father, an immigrant who died in a warehouse accident when Choice was 8. Elegantly captured in Chang's restrained prose, secrets and memories rise slowly to the surface, forcing Choice to confront both the long-hidden scars of familial bitterness and the poignancy of his father's quest to preserve his dreams of a medical career, even as he succumbed to the exhausting drudgery of physical labor.

Chang's first two novels, The Fruit 'N Food and Dispatches from the Cold, garnered praise for their starkly realistic portrayal of racial tension and quotidian ennui. Over the Shoulder, though leavened with a touch of dry humor, doesn't pull any punches either, as Chang lays bare his protagonist's frailties and fantasies. --Kelly Flynn

Excellent Mystery and a Sweet Romance
The title might lead one to expect a spy novel, but this is the debut of Allen Choice, a Korean-American security specialist who becomes something of a reluctant private eye, as he investigates the drive-by slaying of his partner, Paul Baumgartner. Paul is killed in what at first looks like a hit on one of their corporate clients, but as Allen digs into the mystery, he begins to realize that Paul was doing a bit of moonlighting and that one of his clients might be behind the killing. Also, his investigation leads Allen to the events surrounding his own father's "accidental" death twenty years before.

This was a great book, with Allen's introspective, lonely thoughts at the forefront. There's a lot about what it means to be different or "other" in America, as well as Allen's personal alienation (he was brought up by an aunt who viewed him as a nuisance) and his own personal emptiness at the heart of the book. Other than his job, he doesn't have much going on in his life and when his investigation threatens his employment, things don't look good for Allen.

Luckily, he has the help of an inexperienced, lifestyles reporter, Linda Maldonado, in unraveling the mystery. Besides offering a compelling mystery, this book also features a sweet, unexpected, slowly-developing romance between the two (the clueless Allen doesn't realize why Linda is going out her way, risking her life and career to help him, until almost the very end). An excellent mystery debut and I'm strongly looking forward to the second book in this series, _Underkill_.

A strong thriller with other issues.
With the overtones of Greek Tragedy, the themes of the sins of the father reaching the son, OVER THE SHOULDER takes a lyrical and heartfelt view of what happens when the son begins learning about his father, whom he never really knew. Occasionally overeaching with respect to the pseudo-existential musings of Choice, Chang (Choice/Chang? Choice=Sartre?) delves into the world of bodyguards and hidden secrets, of guarding the body of truth, of the "choice" of the past and the "choice" of the guard. We can read this novel on a few different levels, the easiest being the thriller elements, the more complicated being the issues of race and family legacies, of the disjunction between generations and how the past interferes with the relationships of the present. I was reminded of Walker Percy since the elements of the Search (Percy's term), congregation, and connection are all present. With Percy, in the Moviegoer, we have movie culture as a frame with which to view Binx's relationship with the world, whereas in Over the Shoulder we have the world of security protection (protect Allen's security, his blanket of armor) as the frame. I'm afraid most serious readers might avoid this novel for its lurid cover (What is a novel of "intrigue"? When is a good novel not "intriguing"?), but for those interested in a complex and complicated story with thematic elements echoing Sophocles, all layered with a very well-written mystery, you might try this one.

I liked this cool departure.
I've read Mr. Chang's other two novels (one for an Asian-American lit class, another on my own), and was really surprised to see him try this kind of novel. It's a thriller and love-story and it's so different from his other works. I really liked it. At first I was confused, not even sure it was the same author, but then I saw the same kinds of themes he handles, like dealing with past secrets and people being lonely and isolated. I also saw him turning up the plot elements, which was fun. I think most people will like this novel a lot, because it's exciting, and also looks deep into what it means to be alone in the world. I guess I kind of fell for Allen Choice.

Feel the stretch!
I've looked at many excercise books and I have found that the Pilates Back Book really stands out.

What I like about it is that there are color pictures for every excercise, illustrating them step by step. Furthermore, the pictures aren't interrupted by writing, except for verbal descriptions of the exercise and how many times each one should be done. All of the writing about the benefits of pilates for your back and the Pilates method is in the beginning of the book.

I don't do pilates consistently enough to notice changes in posture and other long-term benefits, but rather as a quick fix when my back hurts. I found that doing the exercises in the book helps my back when it is sore or tired.

Because there are so many exercises, you can pick which ones you can do if you have a health restriction like arthritis. There are plently of exercises for both beginners and people who are quite limber.

I also recommend checking out pilates exercises on DVD/VHS, because sometimes it's easier to get the motivation to do exercises if you are watching someone else do them along with you.

One minus about the book is that it doesn't lay flat when it's opened, so it's hard to have it open and read while doing exercises at the same time.

A life saver for lower back pain
I gained alot of weight during my pregnancy, and being a small person, the extra weight hurt my back long after my son was born. Through Pilates and specifically, this book I have relieved much of my pain. The exercises are effective and don't hurt to perform. The photography is excellent and the direction given to each move is great. A wonderful, helpful book.

Stretching does cure Back Pain
Back problems can come from a variety of sources. Neck injuries, neck mis-alignments,torn ligaments, improper posture, short leg, and the list goes on. Each back problem, is different than the next, and should be treated differently. There isnt a one-fix all!!! For me, the main cause of my back pain, was do to, tight glutes, and hamstrings. They were so tight, that it tightened up my back muscles(back pain), and virtually every other muscle in my body. The stretching outlined in this book, really helped to lossen up those muscles, and therefore lossen up my back muscles, and therefore help get rid of back pain. You dont need any medical studies, to show this, works. Its pure common sense. The muscles in the body are interconnected, and one set of tight muscles, are prone to tighten other muscles. The book has, helped me alot. Definately worth the buy.

Far Surpasses Expectations
I'm delighted to be one of the contributors to this publication. Not particularly my own story, which our family is so glad to finally see in print, but because of the other wonderful contributions. How blessed we are to be numbered together in the realm of Angels. Each author holds a special place in my prayers and heart. Your stories have enriched my soul.

Rick and Barb, may God's Blessings accompany your efforts in marketing this book. I am honored to be included among the exceptional writers you selected.

Thank you for your kindness.

Blessings and Teardrops
What a wonderful book! I was touched by every single story, but especially the contributions from the Smiths, Geralynn and David ("Martha" and "Brandy"). I assume they are married, based on their bios. This book is perfect for gift giving, but get a copy for yourself, too. It's fast, easy reading, and will bless your heart. I highly recommend it, for all ages, including teens and senior citizens. Excellent!

Charming and Unpredictable
I bought a copy of this book as a gift for a friend. After I read it, I decided to keep it, and went out and bought several more for gifts. This book contains a delightful mixture of experiences with guardian angels from a variety of perspectives--all with a solid ring of truth to them.
Even if you don't necessarily believe in guardian angels, these unpretentious stories tell of remarkable episodes in the lives of ordinary people. An inspiring and touching read.

One of a Kind Bible
There's not a Bible to be found that compares with this one! God's Word in itself is sharper than a two-edged sword; in addition, T. D. Jakes has elaborated on Scripture in a way never seen before to heal the woman with deep wounds. How refreshing to find yourself happy with who you are and desiring to yield to HIM because of His awesome love for us. Thank you, Bishop Jakes!

THE BOOK IS FOR THE HEALING, HURTING AND SUFFERING.
This book and all of Bishop Jakes books are a blessing to own. This book is readable and understandable. I have purchsed 5 of these books so far as gifts and for myself. I have been changed in a short time just by reading each scripture, definition of each woman of the bible and I no longer feel alone. I have been able to identify myself with each story, situation and problem. I Love this book and I hope every woman or man get one. This is the best Bible that I have ever read & it is truly for the woman.

Bishop Jakes Thank you and Bless You for telling it like it is and being able to understand the feelings of women.

God uses Jakes to bring healing to His daughters
It's difficult to summarize this book in a nutshell, but I've read this book numerous amounts of time and continue to go back to it. God uses Jakes to touch, heal, and set His daughters free. Jakes bases his information directly from the word of God and touches hearts. I cried reading this book. It's a balm every women needs. It's the truth of how God feels about us and we need to know this. Read the book and allow God to touch the areas in your life that the devil has been attacking you in. It's awesome. It's life changing and it's definetely uplifting.

On the Shoulders of Giants: A Shandean Postscript: The Post-Italianate Edition
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (May, 1993)
Authors: Robert K. Merton, Umberto Eco, and Denis Donoghue
Amazon base price: $18.00

Academia Transfixed
'On the Shoulders of Giants' (which shall hereafter be referred to as OTSOG) is the quintessential study of the nature of academicism. It is thinly disguised as a dissertation into the origin (and originality) of Newton's famous aphorism 'If I have seen farther, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.' However, once the reader finds himself confronted by what might or might not be an attack on Richard Burton (the one that wrote 'The Anatomy of Melancholy'), suspicions grow, and in short order one begins to understand that a leg or two is being pulled.

Of course, it does not end there. Displaying the kind of dazzling scholarship that most academics can only aspire to, Merton zigzags across the intellectual horizon on a quest for the lighter side of truth. In doing so, he exposes many of the pretensions of scholarly work, plagiarism and specious logic. Leaving no stone unturned, we are as likely to find ourselves in pursuit of Tristram Shandy as we are to be wandering through the transept of Chartres Cathedral. All in a mad search to uncover who really used OTSOG first.

It needs to be said that Merton is, on his own, an extremely respected sociologist, one who often has used the scientific and academic world as the focus of his remarkable eye. OTSOG sets out to make points by mimicking its subjects rather than lecturing about them. Whimsical and witty, it still touches on serious issues while exposing a great deal of fascinating minutia. Certainly it is a one of a kind work that enjoys a large cult following among those who are reluctant to take themselves seriously. Look out for Umberto Eco's foreword and Merton's riposte-face as well.

Spectacular
Every scholar should this wonderful, joyous book

Robert Merton invites comparisons. . .
with Sterne. He comes off third best. First, of course, is the master himself. Second, comes Umberto Eco for his witty, catholic and erudite Forward. Nonetheless, Merton treads where no others have dared in his re-creation of the "Shandean" style. For this, alone, he deserves credit (and reading.) Because Merton chose real characters it was inevitable he failed to reach the pinnacle achieved in Sterne's fictional master-creation: Uncle Toby--one of the great characters in all literature. Do read Merton, and Tristram Shandy.

This book was life changing and a blessing to my spritman
All I can say at this time is that Bishop Jakes is a blessed man sent by God. He truly has a heart for the woman that has been hurt, and as for me this book has open up my eyes and set me free from my dark past the inter child that was lost, hurt, and missed used is found and now my confidence and my faith has been renewed so I thank the men of God for letting the Lord work though him. Just to add to what I said because of the book, Iam free indeed there is no devil in hell that can take from me any more I think every woman should read this book they will be set free the Lord thy God is faithful I could go on and on about this book because It is powerful and eye opening a new life will emerge and truth will come I say woman forget about your past. For the man of God has said WOMAN, THOU ART LOOSED, if you have not got the book get today love you Bishop Jakes. Sincerely, Christie D. Washington

A must read for all women even if you are not a Christian!
After reading this book,I was totally convinced that T. D. Jakes is annointed and has been prophetically impressed upon by God to reach "women" in a manner in which no other man has done thus far. I would be remiss if I did not give hommage to Bishop Jakes for having the divine wisdom and indepth conscienceness to caringly touch those secret places of a womans' psyche that only God himself knows about. This book transcends all barriers such as ethnicity and cultural backgrounds. When it comes down to facts, women are women, and many of us are faced with similar challenges throughout life. I would recommend this book to every woman! It is healing, and powerful. Though "Woman Thou Art Loosed" will often bring tears to your eyes, those tears will inevitably be the water which surfaces the pain and washes it away. After reading this magnificant work by Bishop T. D. Jakes, I believe any woman would be on her way to recovery from whatever hinders her spiritually, physically or emotionally. I, personally, thank God Bishop Jakes!

JESUS IS ALL I NEED! More Biblical Proof....
This book was awesome! God has covered everything through T.D. Jakes in this book for the broken-hearted. He reminds us how precious we are in His sight. We are created for a special purpose & this book spells it out beautifully! Dispelling all the lies of the enemy, nourishing our souls with God's very own Word.

Bob Buck may not be as famous as Charles Lindbergh, but he's well known among aviators for setting flight-distance records in the 1930s, flying a B-17 in the Second World War, and finally, becoming a commercial airline pilot who logged more than 2,000 trips across the Atlantic Ocean. North Star over My Shoulder is Buck's memoir of a life spent in the skies. He shares plenty of cockpit wisdom: "A copilot can make a trip or ruin it; get someone who talks too much, gripes about the company, tries to impress you, tells long and boring anecdotes, or is overly aggressive in suggesting ways to run the flight, and the taste is unpleasant." He also answers the question he says nonpilots are most likely to ask him: How do you overcome jet lag? "You don't," he says. Buck addresses offbeat subjects, too, such as what an airline pilot does when one of his first-class passengers is irate about the lack of caviar on a long trip. Readers fascinated by flight will enjoy this book, both for its historical perspective on advances in aviation ("a time no one will ever experience again") and the good advice that springs from almost every page ("sitting low tends to make you level off a little too high, while sitting up high tends to make you fly into the ground and not level off enough"). Pilots will appreciate this book, as will anybody who has ever wondered what it's like to fly a plane. --John Miller

Flying life
A wonderfully written book of an amazing life. From DC-2 to 747, it was a career spaning the greatest changes in civil aviation. A story that is now told by someone who was active in advancing the skill of airline flying and can make it very readable. The airline pilot autobiography is not a new idea - there have been some good ones and boat-loads of just OK ones - but this is the best I've read.

A pilot's pilot (Captain Buck flew the line, did research and wrote some best-selling classic pilot education books) who can make the flight through the decades come alive. Imagine sitting down with an old man at a small airport who still pilots gliders and he turns out to be a storyteller of great wit and charm, a man who still remembers when crossing the Atlantic was a battle, who was there when airline flying advanced from shaky pistons to huge jets. Who would not want to relax in the sun, watch the airplanes, and listen to the wonders of TWA unfold. In the tradition of St. Exupery, Ernest Gann and Len Morgan. And yes, I liked it.

Best book in a while
North Star Over my Shoulder is the best flying book I've ever read, and one of the most fun books that I've read in a long time. Captain Buck has an easy to read style and has had a fascinating life centered around aviation. From the earliest planes through 747s, Buck has flown them all. He bring us along through his life with entertainment and a sense of humor. Highly recommended!

An unknown Aviation Legend
North Star Over my shoulder was an interesting look at the life of a pilot who was along for the ride throughout modern aviation history. As a pilot, I enjoyed Capt. Buck's stories spanning from the early open cockpit days to his international flights as the first TWA 747 Captain. This book offers insight to the history of aviation and how it has changed since Capt. Buck started flying. A very entertaining book with a historical flair.

A Good Summary of Trading Experience
In this fantastic book Stanley Kroll discloses his secret of successful commodity trading. As a trader, I find that the book is very useful. The central theme is to follow the trend, than get in during secondary reaction or rally, and then set a rigid cut loss point. After retired from active trading, Stanley Kroll finally returned to the exciting scene of trading. But when he came back, he found that his theory is no longer applicable to the market. This teaches that each one has to be flexible and adapted to the market. He should also develop a new system to reflect the change in the market. Those who are interested in this field could also find the only book by Jesse Livermore, "How to Trade in Stocks" and read it. He could dig a lot of useful information from them.

Must read
I checked this book out of the library, read it and then went and ordered a copy to own. This book reads similarly to ROSO and Marty Schwartz's Pit Bull, except it makes an attempt to show you some of his methods through charts and thought process. Basically, align with the major trend, fade the counter trend at 50% retracements, scale in and scale out. Most of all, be patient, trust your trade and know when you are wrong. Whether or not he chose choice successful examples to write in this book is irrelevant. One gripe I did have though, was not seeing how he would come up with his price objectives, perhaps calculated off a 150% extension. I suspect this is in one of his other books.

I have read around 100 trading related books, this one was a sleeper book that was not expected to be great and so, caught me off guard. This book will certainly stay in my top 10 list and I will be sure to pick up the rest of Stanley Kroll's books.

Superb! Best for the veteran traders
You seldom find in the universe of trading books that a trader will use more passages to cover stories about his failure than success. This is just a rare breed. Perhaps Kroll was confident enough to do so with the backup of his outstanding trading record, and his determination to write a superb trading book.

To me, this is a modern day Reminiscences Of a Stock Operator ROSO. Of course, Kroll and his book are not as "great" as Livermore and ROSO. However, the tone/style of the books are not so distant, and so are their values. In fact, Kroll had voiced out his admiration for Livermore.

In short, cut loss short, keep profit run, plan your game well, focus on the major trend and buy on its minor retracement, keep absolutely calm and relaxed, see lights across the board and not just of what you trade, trade opposite to the news on mass media, mind the single/double day reversal, the sardine story (some commodities are for trading and not for eating), not to be worried about the beginning of a big trend coz it always lasts longer than most people expect, go along with the technical when it clearly shows something at variance with the psychology of the market, and much more wise words are present in this book.

As a value added service, I would like to quote one passage here for your reference.

"There's a great tendency to get carried away by the prevailing market psychology at that time and not doing any liquidating. But you've got to resist that tendency. When the market attains that major price objective, where you had projected closing out, say, half the position, do it. If you dont, you will probably regret it later."

In a word, a must read.

p.s. The only bad thing of this book is the exceptionally poor front cover design.
