How To Stop Smoking - H. Brean
I smoked 3 packs a day of Kools for over half my life. I had NEVER quit because I couldn't. Not only was I addicted to nicotene, but also to the menthol. I could not even sleep all night without waking up for a few "puffs" at least once a night (sometimes more). My mother, also a very heavy smoker, quit smoking after reading this book and sent it to me. Half way through the book I wadded up the half a pack I was working on and never touched the two unopended packs on top the fridge except to throw them away. That was 25 years ago! After quitting I made it a point to order this book a half-dozen at a time until it went out of print. I used to give the book to anyone who asked me how I quit. I cannot tell you how many people to whom I gave this book have also quit, but it has many. My only regret is that for some unknown reason the book went out of print and no other publisher has picked it up. I'm ordering two used ones today to give to two friends and wanted to encourage others to buy this book so that they too can get free from this deadly habit!

READ THIS BOOK AND YOU WILL SAVE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF $$$$$
This book is outstanding. After smoking for more than 10 years, 3+ packs a day of the long unfiltered kind, chewed leaf tobacco and dipped snuff, I had a serious tobacco addiction. I wanted to quit but I just couldn't get by without my tobacco!! A friend told me about this book. I had tried to quit so many times but I always went back to smoking. I agreed to read it but really didn't think it would help me change a thing. I soon found out why this book will help even the most serious smoker stop for good. The author reveals the secrets to success in an easy to understand style. You'll be amazed at what you find in the pages of this book. I figured a "how to" manual would be difficult to read. The book kept my attention from the minute I opened it. I read it in a couple of hours because I couldn't put it down. It's actually fun to read!! I read this book when a pack of smokes cost less than 50 cents. THANKS TO THIS BOOK I HAVEN'T HAD A CIGARETTE FOR MORE THAN 22 YEARS. If I were still smoking today, smokes alone would cost me about $5000 a year. This book is a must for anyone who has ever thought of quitting smoking. If you are even just thinking of quitting, check this book out. It's an easy and enjoyable read!!

I read this book and haven't smoked now for over 40 years!
I am a retired clinical psychologist and have helped many of my clients stop smoking over a period of several decades. Brean's little book is the best I know about. I used it myself over 40 years ago and have not smoked a cigarette since then. (I occasionally smoke a pipe or a cigar--maybe once or twice a year.) The book is based on sound psychological principles and emphasizes proper preparation before you actually quit. A unique feature is its day-by-day pages that you must not read until you quit and then only read each page on its assigned day. It's remarkable how much those little pages help!

Almost grandma looks for golden oldie!
My children are all grown and I'm expecting my first grandchild. This was my bible when I was rearing my own and I am thrilled to be able to share it with my daughter.

One of the best guidelines on childrearing in print
Marvin Gersh was my son's pediatrician 30+ years ago. His down-to-earth caring approach to child care is well reflected in this book. Helpful hints as well as practical solutions to every-day problems. He even has a chapter on toxic plants. A must have for all new parents. Easy to read, funny and extremely informative. I have given this book as a gift at many baby showers.

Who needs Spock?
This book is indispensable for any parent. Informal and down-to-earth, it gives you all the information you need (and some you didn't know you needed) in terms funny enough to make you want to read it just for the good lines. I have Spock, but I don't use him half as much as Gersh. I got this book when it came out in paperback about thirty years ago and I've relied on it ever since. It told me more than my mother did and kept me from driving my pediatrician nuts. I think it's great and I ought to know -- I've raised nine children on Gersh and all the married ones call me to ask what Gersh says about their kids' ailments. If I could afford it I'd give a copy to each of my kids as a first-baby gift.

Super Skills for the 21st Century
Anyone interested in accelerated learning is probably indebted to Colin Rose through his first book published in 1983. He has the gift to present research information and applications in interesting and easily accessible ways. This book even supersedes the past two in packing so much useful material in 152 pages. The goal is to help everyone master 3 skills given in the subtitle: how to learn faster, make good decisions and think creatively. Colin elaborates on the 6 stages of his learning model, using the acronym M.A.S.T.E.R. M=mind set. A=acquire the facts. S=search out the meaning. T=trigger the memory. E=exhibit what you know. R=reflect on how you learned. The model can be applied to learning organizations too. Learning and teaching using the book is much helped by numerous cartoon mind-maps, charts, sketches, summaries, quotes, captions, acronyms, training tips, parent tips... 8 multiple intelligences, your preferred senses are succinctly presented and assessed. There are interesting tidbits of information or advice on almost any page. "Information is doubling every four years." (p.1)"Tests show that simply shifting a book to the left or right of the body can improve some people's reading speed and understanding!" (p.9)"Separate the personality from the problem!" (p.79)"Want to be sure to remember something important later in the day? Switch your watch to your other hand. It's a constant reminder that something is different." (p. 94) Find your own gems throughout the book. I wish all students can work through such a program and master the super skills necessary for the 21st century.

Great story of a woman's dedication to her dream
Martha Berry founded Berry College...but the story actually begins with a log cabin in the woods where she taught poor mountain children math and reading. Miss Berry's story is absolutely wonderful, and this book is filled with stories and details that bring the story to life. I admit I am a Berry College grad, but I honestly think this story will be captivating for those who enjoy reading about real people with big dreams...dreams that changed lives. History buffs may also find the stories of Henry Ford's support of the schools surprising and interesting.

Packed with Knowledge!
In this day of self-help mania, it's hard to know where to start. Everywhere you turn there's another book being released by a motivational speaker. It's time to get back to basics, and the best way to do that is to go to the father of self-help himself - Dale Carnegie. This compilation of the best of his classics could be re-titled "Dale Carnegie's Greatest Hits." It is packed with anecdotes of how famous and not-so-famous people through the ages have hit tough situations in life and overcome them. Although some of the language is dated - Carnegie wrote much the material in the 1930's - the situations he portrays are not limited to any era. You will be encouraged to know that you, too, can be happy, popular and organized. We recommend this book to anyone who works with people in any capacity; it could drastically change how you approach your life and the people around you.

Enjoy Life and your Job
I always was a good man, after reading this book I became a better man, and I shall be eternally grateful to Dale Carnegie for his great work on this book. This book is a life changer, and also one of the best examples that we never know enough and that we should keep learning something new in each day of our lives.

It mentions the originality and how important it is to be ourselves rather than trying to be someone which we aren't and can't be. It covers our 'boredom' we get at work and it shows us the way how to turn it into a happiness. So easy that is, If I only knew that before.

And this book of course it is extremely rich by powerful sayings
and true life stories from people of all ages.

YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK and after you do YOU'LL WELCOME DAILY
PROBLEMS with all your heart because you'll know by then, how to
make them dissapear - within seconds.

Time won't change these truths
My copy of this book is yellowed, tattered and over 30 years old. Nonetheless, I can open to any page and find a bit of timeless wisdom and truth. I've worked in difficult situations with groups and individuals for the past ten years. I've worked with, convicts, hardcore addicts and the mentally ill. I've also worked with highly educated, wealthy, distinguished individuals. I'm here to tell you that the techniques in this book will work with all people.

No one likes to be criticized or condemned. We all want to save face and feel important. This book teaches you the power of humility and the art of getting what you want while working cooperatively and harmoniously with others.

If you find yourself struggling at your current job or if you're in conflict with your co-workers or employees, I'd recommend trying some of the techniques and principles outlined in this book.

HT STOP WORRYING
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Pocket Books (03 May, 1983)
Author: Unknown
Amazon base price: $3.50
Used price: $1.73
Collectible price: $1.75
"Those who don't know how to fight worry, die young." This ominous advice begins Dale Carnegie's bestseller, How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, an eight-part treatise on the follies of worrying. Like other Carnegie books, this one is packed with good old-fashioned common sense, illustrated with examples drawn from research on historical figures and interviews with business leaders. Somehow, even the most simple advice--such as Carnegie's four-step method of problem solving--is presented in a way that makes you want to write it down and post it on the employee bulletin board. Narrated by the resonant and engaging voice of Andrew McMillan and loaded with relevant real-life examples, this unabridged audiobook maintains interest throughout. Here you can find the most basic steps for happiness
This book contains not only the steps for a worry-free living : when applying its techniques and principles in your day-to-day, you start to notice that you are a new person, with much more capacity, and the results of your acting became surprisingly better. It's probable that if you learn and apply correctly what Dale Carnegie wrote many years ago, you will solve very old problems, those very complex problems that you had already given up(ex. relationships with people in family and work, general organization of your life, bad memory, backwardness, etc.). You will be able to do what you believed was an unchangable weakness of yourself, and this will increase your self-confidence.You may ask how can a book be so miraculous. The answer is : this book is based in the toughts of the most wise men of all times, including Jesus Crist, Willian James, Benjamin Franklin, Thoma Edison, and many others, together with the real experiences that Dale Carnegie made in his "lab of how to stop worrying". Thus, in spite of not solving all the problems of our lives, this book certainly contains precepts that every person should know, and is an obligatory reading for those who are not completely happy with their lives.

This Really is a Great Book!
I have to confess, I'm a chronic worrier. I was even back in high school when I found this book from my sister's Dale Carnegie course and began reading it. While it's been nearly 20 years since I read this book, I've been carrying its principles ever since. The best part of this book and Carnegie's other landmark, "How to Win Friends and Influence People," is it's all common sense. Sometimes, it's so easy to see the obvious until it's pointed out to you and illustrated with very easy to understand anecdotes. The book teaches you to live in day-tight compartments, to accept the worst-case scenario so you can be prepared to handle the consequences, to weigh the odds (Carnegie tells, for example, the story of how as a little boy he started crying because he thought he was going to be buried alive), etc. You won't find a lot of psycho-babble here, just real life experiences from real people to deal with an all too real problem.

How to Stop Worrying!
Ever since I can remember, I worried over small things. Two years ago, a friend suggested this book and it really helped me. I realized that I had to stop obsessing over what I couldn't control. This great book also helped me to turn negative situations into positive ones. This is a great book which really does what it says it will do! If you want to rise above worry and emotional turmoil, and truly want to make the MOST of every situation, I totally recommend Optimal Thinking: How To Be Your Best Self. Optimal Thinking gives easy to use roadmaps for emotional mastery. You will not be disappointed with either of these books.

FANTASTIC???
Ever notice that the syntax for all the positive reviews of this book is the same? Notice that every favorable review says "fantastic"? Maybe Arlene wrote each and every review with the word "fantastic" in it. Ya think?

Fantastic audiotape system!
I was very desperate when I bought these tapes. I'd tried so many diets but the weight always came back plus some. I got these tapes a few months ago and faithfully listen to them each night. This program has given me the motivation and strength to choose and stick with a new way of eating. With this program and low carb eating I have lost 19 pounds in two months. The narrator's voice is very soothing and has helped not only my weight but helps me fall asleep as well.

FANTASTIC! I lost over 30 lbs. is three months!
I loved this program. All I had to do was listen to these hypnosis tapes and I lost my cravings, lost my bad habits, and lost the weight. Thank you Victoria!

HT WIN FRIENDS R
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (01 March, 1987)
Author: Carnegie
Amazon base price: $4.95
Used price: $0.01
Collectible price: $1.49
This grandfather of all people-skills books was first published in 1937. It was an overnight hit, eventually selling 15 million copies. How to Win Friends and Influence People is just as useful today as it was when it was first published, because Dale Carnegie had an understanding of human nature that will never be outdated. Financial success, Carnegie believed, is due 15 percent to professional knowledge and 85 percent to "the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people." He teaches these skills through underlying principles of dealing with people so that they feel important and appreciated. He also emphasizes fundamental techniques for handling people without making them feel manipulated. Carnegie says you can make someone want to do what you want them to by seeing the situation from the other person's point of view and "arousing in the other person an eager want." You learn how to make people like you, win people over to your way of thinking, and change people without causing offense or arousing resentment. For instance, "let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers," and "talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person." Carnegie illustrates his points with anecdotes of historical figures, leaders of the business world, and everyday folks. --Joan Price

Read between the lines
I wouldn't recommend this book if someone is trying to do the right thing and wants to truly make a difference in other people's lives. If you are looking to make it to the top and don't really care who you manipulate to get there, this is the book to read. Don't expect to make friends by using this book. To make friends, you don't always have to agree with someone, or be perky all the time, just be you.
Carnegie's heart may be in the right place as far as some of the principles go. He has a point, if we are good to other people, they will be good to us in return. At least that is how it should work. The thing he never addresses, is that this isn't always true. Sometimes no matter how hard we try, things don't get better, and some really great people never make it to the top. I think he should at least make it known that this isn't fool-proof, and that sometimes people don't appreciate others no matter what is said or done.
The most important thing about this book is that Carnegie makes us think. It does make a person stop and think about how they are acting towards others.
I came up with my own principle after reading this book. It has really nothing to do with the book itself, but rather what I think he left out... To be a true influence on others, be real, be kind, and be respectful. If you do those things you will touch lives every day. To make friends and be a true influence, do just one thing, be genuine.

The very best in self-help books!
What can't I say about this book?! I first read How to Win Friends and Influence People five years ago. I have made it practice to read it at least once a year now in the hopes that some day I may actually assimilate the incredible wealth of material included in the pages. Listen, there are a ton of self-help and motivational books out there, but this one isn't like all the rest: it is the forefather to all of them! I have to be honest when I say that this book has had a profound impact on my life and my way of thinking. It is timeless, priceless, and seems to get better with age. I hold no reservation or hesitation in recommending that you not only put one of these on your shelf, but that you read it over, and over, and over again.

Reviewed by: James L. Clark, MBA, MSc., PhD Candidate (Leadership) is a serial entrepreneur, lecturer, and consultant. He is the author of the book Wading Through the Crap: How to Start Living the Successful Life You Have Always Wanted (ISBN 0972697551) that has received rave review.

In Essence: Yield and be sincere. Audio version is excellent
To my mind, sincerity and deference are at the core of Carnegie's advice, which I find to be quintessentially Taoist in character. Well-researched and occasionally even tear-jerking, this is one of the most engrossing books I've ever read. I highly recommend the audio version as well. The narrator is the best I've heard, with a tone that carries the intamcy of a fireside chat, and an inflection that communicates a emotional connection to the work.

Despite its esteem, I ignorantly passed over this book for years because the title gave me the impression that it described ways to manipulate people's feelings in order to further one's business/financial career. Carnegie takes care to periodically remind us that the practice only becomes a tool for manipulating others when people employ it insincerely. When his or her efforts are neither manufactured nor contrived, the successful Carnegie student displays grace, diplomacy, poise, and deference (wit sold separately).

A delightful introduction to traditional Jewish practice
Growing up in a Classical Reform home, where observance was minimal, Conservative practice considered dated and pointless, and Orthodoxy completely alien, I would never have expected to read this book, much less love it. But Blu Greenberg's writing describes modern Orthodox practice with such warmth and charm that we have actually taken on new observances after reading it. Furthermore, even practices we are unlikely to adopt have become understandable and something to appreciate. Highly recommended!

Wonderful !
Love the book because its so vast and informative and is written by a modern Orthodox woman which is very much like the Proverbs 31:10-31 in the Jewish texts where the woman is shown to be wise, educated, hard working, comfortable at home or in the work place. A true feminist who also knows and embraces the value that a wife and mother has. The sections on abortion and birth control are excellent and should be read buy those who profess to be pro-life and Biblical. And the chapters on dress are a must read for those who think sack clothe and ashes are what observant Jewish women wear. I just cannot say enough positive things about this book, which I think should be on any book shelf of anyone who cares about what Judaism teaches.

A wonderful introduction to traditional Judaism
Blu Greenberg's book is simply wonderful. It reads like a novel and is thought-provoking at the same time. Her approach is extremely sensitive. This is a great book to encourage people to be more observant and at the same time realise that it is possible.
