Great eatsA great restaurant and a great cookbook. I used to live upstairs from this restaurant, and the incredible aromas would always tempt us downstairs for the soup of the day. I've heard that the restaurant is closed now, but the recipes are still great. They are simple, easy to follow and always delicious.

Easy to read and a lot to learnMy son read this aloud to our extended family of 9 on a summer driving trip to the desert. Everyone enjoyed the book, and there were things for us all to learn. Great pictures for the younger kids, too.

Powerful, unique, existential insights by rare, new talentI was first put onto Niall Quinn by a fellow novelist. From the opening lines of his first book, VOYOVIC, I was hooked and couldn't stop until I read all four of his published works. Then I went back and re-read them in sequence for the sheer joy of sensing the unfolding of a vibrant new writer. For make no mistake--these are unique tales spun by a master storyteller with a singular vision and a Gaelic wizardry with words. The dense texture of the syntax is reminiscent of Joyce and Conrad. Sentences resonate with the authority of one who's been there, done that. They mirror the author's adventures, leaving Ireland at 16 to ship out on the merchant navies of the world, jumping ship to work as an illegal in France, Germany, America, Brazil, the Caribbean, Bangladesh. He becomes modern existential man as an underground refugee worker--homeless, a permanent nomad in search of anchors, new roots. And with the rising tide of third-world migrants infiltrating the prosperous havens of Europe and America, we'll see his kind multiplying a million-fold! Some of the European press see Quinn as the spiritual successor to Kerouack and Burroughs. There's that, ofr course, but in the grimy underground of working Paris in THE CAFE CONG, I felt more the brooding gloom of a Dostoievski or Tolstoy on the eve of revolution. For this is around the time of the student uprisings. And the book is about the underbelly of the City of Lights where the can-can frivolity of the surface Folies never penetrates! The young workers and students are shadows in a nether world wishing to ignore them--invisible, like the unseen black man in America. This is a writer who confronts life's ambiguities head-on and doesn't cloak uncomfortable conclusions in mystical allusions. I found magic in all his books--VOYOVIC, STOLEN AIR, WELCOME TO GOMORRAH and most especially in THE CAFE CONG. Not the faux marvels of the dungeon-and-dragon genre so popular today but the genuine wizardry of finding purpose amidst the angst of modern metropolitan aimlessness. Do I recommend Niall Quinn and his four published books? With all the stars I'm allowed to affix! --Jack Lange, author of SEARCH FOR THE DRAGON

Mortal man cannot be this giftedOnce in the South of France, I met a man not of this Earth. His eyes spoke of Old Testament knowledge while his body was reminiscent of Greco-Roman athletes in their prime. The honeyed words which flowed from his lips bathed the throng of admirers that flocked about him in a golden light of Olympian purity. I stumbled haltingly, almost not daring to look upon such a god/man. And yet, to look away, to leave the presence of such a being would surely bring far greater pain. Edging my way forward, I found it impossible to reach this man. The mass of followers which pulsed about him were far too great. As I collapsed to the ground, frustrated and overcome, I felt a strong yet gentle hand touch my shoulder. "Rise up and Read, my child." The stranger placed a copy of "Cafe Millennium" in my eager hands and drifted off in monastic solemnity towards all that is good and right in the world. My life has never been the same.

Beatitude at it's bestI lived in North Beach on and off during the late 1950s thru 70s.
Ira's book of remarkable photos shows the tale end of the "Beat movement" before things changed for the worse. There are some excellent photos of Ginsberg & Ferlinghetti, along with several other poets and writers. I was known as the "Krazy (auto) Painter from Oakland." I missed out ("Sfiga") on most of the photo shoots. . .but remember most of the people in the book, who were very real. The quality of Ira's work and the text is for one to follow.

Mmm Mmm Good!I have spent many a lunch hour at the Cafe South Restaurant and I was tickled pink when I heard the cookbook was soon to be released. You won't find a speck of lard in the cookbook or in the cooking; however, there's no shortage of good southern comfort foods. The Lemon Pie and Bread Pudding with wine sauce are both to die for. I highly recommend this cookbook!

Where has this book been all my life?Well, damn. I mean, I LIVE here, and why haven't I seen this book before? There are unique cafes everywhere in San Francisco's cosmopolitan Bay Area, and what can be more cosmopolitan than discovering a new one, sitting at streetside between the fog rolling out and rolling back in, sipping a latte, and indulging in a little People Watching? I love it. There are more than 300 wonderful color photos, a directory to the more than 340 cafes profiles, lots of vignettes, tidbits, gossip items, and even some recipes.

This a great book! I loved the maps too!!My mom and dad use this book a lot. I asked them if I could read it too. They said yes. I learned a lot about my city and the many places around to buy stuff. The maps were a great feature of this book!! I can recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about my city, Vancouver!
