Southwestern Cuisine With Style
This is an excellent collection of Southwestern recipes with stylistic touches. Especially appealing to me are those with fruit or dried fruit, such as Lamb Chops with Dried Cherry-Chipotle Sauce or Spinach Salad with Figs and Jicama or Tangy Cheese-Stuffed Quail with Mango-Chile Salsa. New discoveries of combo flavors are Muchroom, Jarlsberg and Parsley Salad and Corn Risitto. Also tantalizing is Dessert, Taquito or the Arizona Princess Cake, rich with apples, tequila, chocolate and pecans. Another well done TenSpeed Press output, with sources and nice, large format with super color photos and clear instructions and ingredients. Certainly, those who love Southwestern food will add this to their collection.

Recipes worth the effort
Cafe Terra Cotta is one of Tucson's local treasures. This book provides surprisingly easy directions for a selection of their classic wonderful dishes. The majority of the recipes call for ingredients that are relatively easily available, and the directions are easy to follow. I have had some comments by friends who glanced through the pages and decided that the recipes must be too complicated because of the numbers of different ingredients, but the two factors do not necessarily correlate. Yes, some recipes do call for a fairly lengthy list, but the actual procedures are quite simple, so there's no need to be intimidated. This is a really good little cookbook. I especially like the salsas, sauces, the garlic custard, and relishes. The tortilla soup is a favorite at pot-lucks. Try it!

Dinner at the New Gene Cafe : How Genetic Engineering Is Changing What We Eat, How We Live, and the Global Politics of Food

It may be true that we are what we eat. Now, with a flood of genetically modified foods overtaking the market, it is possible to eat what we are. But the prospect of genetic cannibalism is the least of the worries of food activists, and journalist Bill Lambrecht's Dinner at the New Gene Café follows both sides of the genetically modified organism (GMO) debate with vigor. He's been covering the story since the mid-1980s, interviewing agricultural officials, biotech industry executives, family farmers, and protesters to build a comprehensive understanding of the issues.

Lambrecht's writing, clear and direct, explains the science and politics plainly enough that even those who flunked Biology or Poli Sci 101 can understand his arguments. He is equally skeptical of the claims of industry shills and activists, and often shakes his head in wonder at the incompetence of government agencies. From academic conferences to the Battle for Seattle, he's seen every aspect of the GMO wars, as they ignited in Europe and slowly spread across the world and eventually penetrated the U.S. Peppered with short essays on his own illegal home experiments with GMO seeds, Dinner at the New Gene Café offers readers insight into a growing question that will most likely define our menu choices for many years to come. --Rob Lightner

Average review score:

a comprehensive look at gmo's
This book was very enlightening in the subject of GMO's, as they are a powerful new technology with frightening implications. Lambrecht uses entertaining anecdotes and accounts of his dealings with ordinarys farmer and head agricultural powerfigures. I recommend this book because it tried to show an objective perspective on the entire issue, and left no voice unheard.

The new age of eating
If you are curious about what you are eating this is a necessary book for you. Bill Lambrecht provides an unbiased resource for those intrested in the history of GMO food. Lambrecht gives the opinions of scientists, politicians and the farmers that grow these crops. This provides a balenced collage of information that allows anyone to make up their own mind about what the future of food should be.

Creative but not extreme recipes
I've used this book over and over to my own delight and that of my friends. The recipes put a great spin on standards like quiche and soups yet don't require a CIA degree to execute. Some cooking experience is helpful, though.

Wonderful,inventive,useful recipes. A must have.
Easy recipes, many elegant choices. Great for entertaining. Good all around staple for your kitchen.

A fusion of flavors never before experienced!
Last night I went to Melange Cafe in Cherry Hill, NJ. The food was full of great flavors and the presentation was very appetizing. The fusion of the two cuisines are awesome. I am definately going to return and try other items on the menu prepared by the masterful chef. I purchased the cookbook and the chef was kind enough to take the time and sign it for me. Thanks Joe for creating a great dining experience! I can not wait to prepare the dishes using the recipes from the cookbook.

News From Down to the Cafe--- Review of Poems and the Poet
Dave Lee, with News From Down to the Cafe, has brought us closer to the oral tradition which is at the center of what poetry should always strive to be. To be experienced fully, the poems must be read aloud, and not just at the author's urging, but because all poetry should be read out loud. "Poetry is a participation sport," Lee has said more than once. With this book, and others of his this is not hyperbole--- a vocal reading is essential. Dave Lee paints not just pictures with his words, his poems are vast murals of what it is like to live in a small town where things are done a bit differently. In "The Twenty-One Gun Salute," Lee shows how the collective mind of the small town works by exploring the skewed perception of what a funeral must have in order to be a real funeral. "The Fish" takes on marriage and the determination of a husband and wife, both unwilling to give in to the other. However, what I found of particular interest and delight in this collection of poems, was the inclusion of E.U. Washburn. Having grown up in a small town (though not as small as the author's), I have seen many of the same people included in Lee's books, in my own life. E.U. Washburn literally sends a chill down my back. Not because every small town has someone like E.U., or because there is the chance that I knew the one from my town, but because E.U. Washburn is so complete. I actually ask myself at times whether E.U. is actually a manifestation of the poet in the third person. My conclusion is that E.U. Washburn is at least in part, autobiographical. Dave Lee seems to be a democratic poet, because he chooses to write about what he knows, with a voice that he has known all of his life. Lee has studied for the ministry, taken a Ph.D. in literature, taught at Southern Utah University, but has also raised pigs, been a professional pitcher, and soldier. These things and more have shaped his voice into one of the truly unique voices in American Poetry. To pass by this book, or Lee's other works without reading them, would leave a blind spot in anyone's literary experience.

warm up my cup, please
Did you ever sit at the counter of a small coffee shop, where everyone not only knows your name, but your life story as well? That's what reading David Lee's latest is like. The poems are the stories of the people , alive and dead, who reside in this small town. The characters recur, with us learning more about them each time. For the most enjoyment, read the stories aloud, to yourself, your friends, or your cat. Read slowly, so you can hear the true voices, and have fun.

Phoenix Cafe
I really enjoyed this book. It brings to an end one of the best trilogies I have ever read in SF. The characters are,as ever in a Jones novel, well developed in a 3 dimensional way (no make that 4 dimensions since time is a very important element). The development of the electronic arts scene is mind blowing. The science is convincing. There is rather a lot of weird sex but who's complaining?

I was just sorry when it ended that I would not be meeting these people again.

The Final and the finest volume of the WHITE QUEEN trilogy.
In White Queen the aliens arrived, and not everyone on Earth was pleased. North Wind brought us back to an Aleutian-run Earth. With Phoenix Café, three hundred years have brought us to a nearly decimated Earth, but one with a united purpose -- everyone wants the Aleutians gone, especially the Aleutians. Miss the Aleutian characters from previous books? You're in luck. Or not. Almost no one in Phoenix Café is who or what they appear. That's part of what Jones does best, destroying assumptions and keeping the reader off-balance. Assumptions about sex and sexuality are the first to go.

Highly Recommended!
Intelligent, well-written, hilarious, and original, Ms. Sorensen creates a collection of political comics strips that provoke thought and tickle the funny bone. If you enjoy political satire, Slowpoke is the book to purchase. I purchased the work September 2002 and still have it to this day! This graphic novella is for individuals who desire comics that are different.

Pure brilliance
Everyone I know who has read this book thinks it's superb. Jen Sorensen is the equal of any of your so-called modern cartooning "greats"; Cafe Pompous is laden with beautifully weighted satire - and it's very, very funny. For $6, not to buy this book borders on nutty behaviour.

Great for a road trip
Driving through Texas is made into something of a quest when you have a cool destination in mind. A great cafe becomes the quest and this book makes travel a lot more fun.

A great read for travelers
Sometimes writers read a book and wonder "hey, why didn't I think of that?" The idea is so good, the research looks like so much fun, and reading the finished product is just effortless. Just a few pages into Texas Old-Time Restaurants and Cafes and we were getting those familiar thoughts--what a great idea! Texas author Sheryl Smith-Rodgers has come up with a real winner here that will appeal to readers whether you're living in Texas, planning a trip to the Lone Star State, or just traveling from the comfort of your favorite armchair. Divided geographically, this guide takes a look at restaurants and cafes that been serving Texas for 20 years or longer. You'll find all types of restaurants here, from ones near major tourist areas like San Antonio's Casa Rio, located right on the beautiful River Walk, to small, out of the way places like Tomball's Goodson's Cafe and Waskom's New Waskom Cafe, which isn't new at all but dates back to 1928. Each of the restaurant entries includes a history of the cafe along with directions and nearby attractions. Many of the cafe listings also include recipes for Texas favorites ranging from chicken fried steak to pecan pie.
