A Heartwarming Story!
I enjoyed this book so much! The author weaves important life principles throughout a touchingly sweet story. It was good to be reminded of doctrines such as: to treat others as you would like to be treated; don't judge people before getting to know them; if you want someone else to change, first consider how you can change your behavior towards them; and many others. The book also reminded me that God is always there waiting and wanting to share in our lives, if only we remember to ask.

Saturday Nights at the God Cafe
After reading 'Saturday Nights at the God Cafe,' I wanted to read more of Karen Corrells work. This book was different from the normal stories I have read. It has personality and I often found myself thinking about its themes and the characters. Its happy/sad moments topped with mentions of the Bible and God were intriguing to say the least. There were points made that pointed arrows in the direction of important themes about life and things people do and how those things affect us in different ways; how love can direct us; and how the Bible and God can direct us. With other more reserved themes concerning alcoholism, and children-parent relationships; being different, in this aspect, it made for an interesting read, opposed to the stacks of attempted books I could never finish. This book with teardrops on the ending pages is a sign that it has affected someone. It is also the sign that I want to read more!!!! Waiting patiently for your next book, Karen!! I give this book 5 stars!

Saturday Nights at the God Cafe
WOW! It's nice to read a book with some substance. I'm a middle school teacher and this is a great book for my older students. It addresses so many issues our kids face today. I also liked that religion was part of the main character's options. This book wasn't heavy into a particular religion. It simply explored how kids may be feeling about God in relation to their lives. I thought the book was great!!

Thoughtful and evocative .
This book takes a novel approach to a mature genre. I found it to be an easy read that evoked comparisons to my own experiences. This is something you'll be thinking about for a long time after you've put it down.

Permeate your sense and senses with The Soul Cafe....
What a delightful read. The only no-so-hot comment I have is that I wish it was longer! However the message of the book is what is important and this is conveyed well. The Soul Cafe takes you on a journey that will remind you to "wake up and smell the coffee". Will Ian sell his soul or find it? This book takes you on the personal journey of a man faced with chosing integrity, accountability or selling out. In the process he finds his spiritual center and remembers what is important. I couldn't put it down. Thanks for the book and the coffee David!

"The Soul Cafe" is a book for NOW.
The Soul Café is a book for NOW.

It's a novel, job manual, and self-help book all in one. Drawing from the collective wisdom of Mohandas Gandhi, Margaret Fishback Powers, Jesus of Nazareth, William Shakespeare, Henry Ford, and others, author David McLean presents a colorful and enjoyable story that is easy to read but offers up a timely and decidedly compelling message.

This book traces the story of a materially successful Chicago business executive, Ian Archer, who finds himself in an increasingly precarious position within his workplace, a position which encourages him to compromise his integrity and all that believes in. Competing impulses tear at Ian, on the one hand insisting he play it safe and tow the company line, and on the other urging him to blow the whistle on the corruption and decay he has uncovered in an internal investigation but risk losing his job and the affluent lifestyle to which he, his wife and twelve-year-old son have become accustomed.

Unhappy, empty and confused, Ian desperately searches for answers, which begins oddly enough in a small unassuming soulful coffee house where he comes across a peculiar but intriguing stranger who asks him: What is your pain? At first unsettled by this question, the protagonist tries to ignore it, but eventually finds it will niggle away at him until he chooses to tackle it head on. By connecting more strongly with nature, with the values and beliefs with which he was raised, and with a number of vividly-drawn personal mentors, Ian eventually finds reconnection with his father, wife, son, and, most importantly, with his own soul. It is only once he has done this that he is able to grapple with the dilemmas at work and understand that some risks are ultimately worth taking. After all, "What will it profit us if we gain the whole world but lose our souls?"

In a world rife with competition, deadlines, and layoffs, companies and individuals today often find disconnection, apathy, and malaise rampant in the workplace. Any business in the 21st century-large or small-would be wise to heed the message in McLean's "The Soul Café," a message advocating the importance of recognizing and celebrating the individual talents and abilities of all employees and of instilling a sense of soulfulness in the workplace.

This is not just a book for business, however. Anyone-in any walk of life-who wants a lucid, entertaining, and thought-provoking good read will find that "The Soul Café" offers it up-"one cup at a time."

Fiction of Irrealism
Caponegro's book contains a nice mixture of real and unreal, or perhaps 'irreal.' Especially effective are the title story and 'Sebastian.' Humorous and thoughtful: one of the best new voices in literature. (And this isn't just because she taught me in college...)

Makes Me Think Of
Laura Riding, if she were a dude.

Wonderful piece of work
I was exposed to Ms. Caponegro's work thanks to the wonderful book, "You've Got To Read This!", where writers share stories by other writers that inspired or moved them. The Star Cafe is a dazzling display of human mental interplay and inner mental workings. I greatly enjoyed it.

What a delight!
I have used this book extensively in my travels throughout the South. In fact, I have planned some of my trips so that I can sample the delicious food found at the country cafes recommended by the author. My only complaint would be that the author has not come forth with a second book; I have some nominees for him!

A funny, useful and sometimes surprising gastronomic tour.
As is typical of his work, Don O'Briant has filled his latest book with humor, insight, creativity and accurate information. He's a well-known Atlanta journalist and has a reporter's discerning eye. But he's also a philosopher and a warm and sympathetic observer of the human condition. Gratefully, his restaurant reviews aren't like other people's. You feel like you're really there and can experience for yourself the people, smells and sights he describes. The inclusion of comments by notable Southernors is an original and effective device. You can tell that he is a down-to-earth (but incredibly observant) person who genuinely likes the places he went and the people he met. And, best of all, he's a great judge of food. Zagat, take notice! I recommend the book highly.

The Bluebird has been a mainstay of the Nashville music scene for years. Here's the story of how it all happened from the owner Amy Kurland to the performers who make the Bluebird what it is today. This is a great read and a must of the collector of country music history.

Canyon Cafe, yum!
I love Mexican and Tex-Mex food. I visited the Cafe for lunch while on a business trip to Phoenix. I ate dinner there the next night and bought the book! All the items on the menu are in the book - arranged by season of the year. Excellent detailed instructions. Stand-out recipe now in my repertoire -- Chile Rellenos, stuffed with chicken, wrapped in puff pastry, baked, not fried, although they give the instructions for both. Makes me salivate thinking about it.

I never new taste until I tasted Southwest!
I have eaten in a Canyon Cafe many times and never had a bad meal. Whenever I pull out Bringing the Southwest...Home, my family knows we're in for a treat! It's not just about the South Texas Tortilla Soup or the Pecan Crusted Crab Cakes with Chipotle Remoulade...Mmmmmmm!!! For every season there are occasion menus, like Los Dias de Los Muertos, an Aztec celebration of life that offers a feast of Chicken Chile Rellenos with Tomatillo-Avocado Salsa, Venison Posole, Noche Buena Salad, Fire-Grilled Turkey Skewers with Papaya-Mango Salsa & Cucumber Mint Dipping Sauce, Braised Buffalo Short Ribs in Mustard Mole Sauce, and a Mini Bunuelo Sundae Bar. Unlike most cookbooks, it takes out the guess work by presenting recipes from the appetizer to the dessert, up to four menus per season. The book comes in its own colorful jacket, making it the perfect gift, too! AND, I can find all of the ingredients in right in my neighborhood supermarket. My relatives just love it!!!

Cafe Morocco
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (01 February, 1999)

You'll find a two-page color photo of büzrüq gracing the table of contents in Anissa Helou's Café Morocco. It's the visual equivalent of a throaty-voiced muezzin calling the hungry to come admire a plate of Mediterranean mussels. Mussels with Tomatoes and Cilantro struggles so hard to say büzrüq and falls short of the mark. The same is true of Hüt bel Chermüla, fried fish with spicy cilantro sauce. These Moroccan names for food are words you want to shape for yourself with a mouth filled with exotic deliciousness.

And just such deliciousness is beautifully conveyed by Helou in her introduction to Café Morocco. She walks you right into the medina to sample a fabulous array of what she loosely calls street food. In Morocco, Helou writes, "people eat on the streets because of necessity rather than laziness or greed, and they expect the food to be similar to that in their homes.... The only difference between the food they will eat on the streets and that at home is that the former will be cooked by men and the latter by women." Mint and Caraway Soup. Does that sound like street food to you? Or how about Grilled Pepper and Tomato Salad? Or Quail and Almond Bastiya?

For main dishes, Helou includes recipes for Mechoui (Roast Lamb), Tagine of Lamb with Prunes, another Tagine of Chicken with Sweet Potatoes, Squab Stuffed with Couscous, Spiced Onion with Honey, Lentils with Swiss Chard (also known as 'Adess bil Silq, which seems and sounds much more like it), and Potato Cakes with Cilantro. They eat dessert in Morocco, too. Rice Pudding with Almonds, Orange and Cinnamon Salad, Pastry Crescents with Almond Paste. This is a colorful, well-illustrated little book. The visuals complement the high standards Helou sets with her food writing. Where Paula Wolfert makes you feel like you are back in an anthropology classroom, feeling a little stupid, Helou surrounds the reader with the heart and soul of the food at hand. Short of buying a plane ticket and flying there, Café Morocco takes you right to the streets where the best of Moroccan food is found. --Schuyler Ingle

the essence of Moroccan cooking
While living in Morocco for six months, I learned to cook with my host mother. When I returned home I began to look for a cookbook with which to recreate my experiences. I hoped to find something that included both simple staples and more elaborate recipes that show off the potential complexity of Moroccan flavoring. I looked through a lot of cookbooks both here and in France (where there is a large Maghrebi community), and finally decided that this book was the best of the lot.

"Cafe Morocco" is suitable for both novices and those more familiar with Moroccan cooking. Many other cookbooks focus too much on lush photography of Moroccan souqs and too little on the recipes. This book centers on the food without sacrificing aesthetics, and presents an accurate, tasty interpretation of Moroccan cuisine. In addition to being filled with gorgeous, colorful photographs, the book is well laid-out, with clearly marked ingredient lists and simple instructions. At the front of the book are descriptions of ingredients essential to Moroccan cooking, and a brief discussion of cooking equipment and techniques.

Included are several basic bread recipes and a fairly large selection of tajines and couscouses, based mainly on lamb or fish. Helou also presents an unusually wide variety of vegetable-based side dishes that are so essential to Moroccan meals, but are often overlooked in restaurants and cookbooks. Consequently, this book is an excellent purchase for vegetarians (like myself) who love Moroccan food but can't eat meals centered on meat. Although the dessert section is a bit thin, it includes most basic dishes and a number of drinks. Most importantly, there are instructions on how to prepare fresh mint tea, the quintessential Moroccan gustatory and cultural experience.

beautiful book, beautiful food!
I love this cookbook series!

If you have ever had the desire to try to cook Moroccan, start here. The photographs are lovely and informative. Truly a tasty book!

Essential
Cafe Paridiso is one of the best restaurants in Ireland, never mind in Cork (the food capital of Ireland). The fact that no meat (or fish) are on the menu is purely incidental. This is inspirational cooking that will thrill any palate. As I write this I can easily recall the flavours of my last visit from the succulent gnocci to the mouth watering balsamic beetroots to the praline ice cream. For those of us unlucky enough not to live in Cork this book will more than compensate. Beautifully presented it immediately became one of my top ten must-have cookery books. I should mention that although this is technically a vegetarian cookbook to call it such is to insult it. It is simply a wonderful cookbook, and one that changed the way I approach food. Recipes range from the simple to the complex and although I probably wouldn't recommend this as a book for beginners it is a gem for all food enthusiasts.

BTW I am committed carnivore who happily stuffs lambs hearts and slow cooks legs of mutton so dont let the lack of meat recipes put you off. If you buy no other cook book this year buy this one.

try the brownies!!!!!!!!
the book is brilliant, all the recipies are clearly written and easily followed, and the photo's are the ticket for purpose of a compare and contrast afterwards, but my money is on the chocky brownies......they look and taste like a small slice of heaven and the scream to be eaten in one long, slow session in front of the tele.

Quality photos of many contemporary restaurants!
This is a must see book for any interior designer or restaurant entrepreneur. A great resource for various types of restaurants. Not only does it have photos of a finished product, there are also some pages of preliminary designs.

GREAT RESOURCE!!
A winner in its class! This book is a great resource and value. For under $20.00 it has great visual information for the architect or designer, or the interested design afficionado. Unlike most picture books on restaurants, which feature themey, ugly, resort type projects, this book has loads of fresh, modern design. A must have for restaurant designers.
