Many dishes similar to the restaurant are available
This book is filled with many recipes that you may find in the restaurant depending upon their current menu and time of the year. This book is a well written book featuring some of the common delights of French Cuisine. What impresses me most is that most recipes have suggestions for dishes that will go with the recipe, or how to use the leftovers if you should have any.

The book is well illustrated with photographs of some of the dishes. Directions are clear and concise with very little room for confusion. The recipes are very tasty, and fairly easy to prepare for most cooks.

Selections in this book vary from simple to more complex. My personal favorite out of this book is the Potatoes Au Gratin, a recipe that I have been asked for more than once. The Brie soup is delightful, and perfect on a cool weather day. The book also features desserts, meats, and so much more.

If you enjoy their restaurant, or even if you have an interest in French cooking, this book may be ideal for you. Recipes are made with ingredients that are common to the American taste, and can be found readily in a grocery store.

"It was always a cafe at the edge of danger..."
Ok, let's get a few things straight right off the bat. Gotterdammerung Cafe is Andrew Taylor's tenth book of poetry. Yep, this is a book of poetry. But don't let that stop you from reading it. Another thing: I don't normally read poetry (this is the second poetry book I own, the first being a selection of Ezra Pound's stuff). Andrew happened to be one of my lecturers in a creative writing class, and we were all invited to the book launch. He read some pieces, and I loved them.

The reason I'm reviewing this book is because there are several poems in here that resonate with me. 'Perth', about my home town is one of them, as well as the mythical 'Gods' and of course the wonderful title poem.

I think you all should buy it. And not just coz I know the guy!

Putting Southwestern Cooking on the Map
With the second of his general Southwestern cooking recipe books, Mark Miller has joined the likes of superstar chef Bobby Flay in putting a region long misunderstood on our culinary map. In the early to mid 90's Mr. Miller helped develop our palets to appreciate gourmet where we used to expect less. This book will add fire and and great recipes to any chef's repertoire. It is a fantastic example of what a great cook book can be.

Good overall
This book gives a quite good history of those beautiful little hair-drying machines that are scooters. It is filled with pictures of the old and the new (an advancement technologically, not stylistically...)and offers information about all the greats including Vespa, Piaggio and Lambretta and some newer brands to the scooter market. The only downside is the small amount of text, but mechanics buffs will be delighted the amount of detail it does contain. I myself didn't really mind, but it would've been nicer if there was more. A good one for the enthusiast...

Great Expectations
Honestly, I was a bit disappointed in this book. This is despite the fact that it contains what I consider to be one of the best poems written in the past ten years, "His Days." This brilliant poem of a man trapped and lonely in a world of his own creation speaks so powerfully to me that I read it over and over as the years pass. It was because I was so struck by this poem when I read it in a magazine years ago that I kept an eye out for this book when it appeared. Perhaps my expectations were too high but there is not another poem in this book that reaches the level of "His Days."

That is not to say that there aren't some good things here. In particular, I find "Summer Rain" and "from Sewanee in Ruins: Part I" to be excellent poems. The problem I think I have with many of these poems is that they are too specific and too personal to the author. I feel outside many of the poems looking in instead of being drawn into the world of the poem.

Still, it is difficult for me to be too critical. It is worth having this book for "His Days" alone. If, as a poet myself, I write a single verse as powerful as this, I would be a happy man.

good but not best
I am an avid Anne LaMott reader. The commentator who said they were off to read ROSIE will NOT be disappointed. That is an extraordinary book. Although I enjoyed these characters they didn't have the usual depth of LaMott's characters. They were all full of flaws, yes, but I didn't actually believe how they felt about each other. And I could find little in me that even liked Joe Jones. I would've rather seen Louise in a book all by herself. Anyway - I am not swayed from my love of LaMott and her work but this wasn't my fave and I certainly don't reccommend it to forst time readers of her work. Do not stop go - go directly to ROSIE.

It's a wonderful book, another gem for the collection
In the introduction, Lamott thanks Jane Vanderburgh(sp?) for lending an editing hand to Joe Jones, published a long time ago. Having read the original and liked its quirky, flawed movements, I am now absolutely savoring this rewrite. It is a full novel, rounded and studded with unforgettable characters like the elderly Jessie (the car driving scene - the long one - isi sidesplittingly funny), the romantic but wise Lou, and of course the charming and lovely young Willie, whom we all know out there somewhere, the eternal boy-man. Oh it's all pure delight. Fey to the naysayers! A perfect read for the intelligent reader who doesnt need a Hollywood plot or a pat ending. I will not, howvever, be satisfied until Anne writes a sequel to Rae's character in Rosie. We need the Rae book, Annie! We honestly do. All hail Lamott, writer for women (and men) who think.

Imperfect world -
Anne Lamott captures imperfect people in our imperfect world beautifully in this novel. Readers who think Lamott has left them bereft of plot aren't paying attention. The title character's imperfections construct the plot for us. This books is about loving someone despite it all.
Joe Jones is flawed, and does not realize his shortcomings, making those that genuinely care about him the central characters. I found great strength and hope in Louise - she was more physically and spiritually beautiful by the end of this novel than I ever expected. Louise also teaches us by example. Faith and inner strength are not attributes bestowed one time that last forever. They falter, need to be replenished, and are questioned daily, hourly for each of us. I think we forget that sometimes.
I always find guidance in Lamott's writings - snippets and phrases that bolster me and comfort me. "Joe Jones" is no different - the memorable phrase from this being "It's just so time-consuming being me."
