Intriguing, Thought-Provoking
The title of the book will probably threaten your sense of composure. Is this something I want to waste my time with? New-agey. Woo-woo. Recognizing that titles sometimes miss the mark and that there's good stuff between the covers of the book, I moved beyond the front page and into the text.

The book begins with our storyteller relating a frustrating experience of being locked in a monumental traffic jam. We can all identify with that scenario. Would you just sit there and wait-especially after a police officer had informed you that the problem wouldn't be cleared for at least an hour? Our hero got himself out of that jam and headed back down the highway in the opposite direction, looking for another route to reach his destination. And that's the crux of this book.

Finding himself totally lost, not seeing a soul for miles, he pulls into a diner. The menu includes three deep questions about life that are processed progressively through his conversations in chapter after chapter. Once you get into this book, you won't want to put it down. You'll find yourself on a similar introspective journey of discovery.

I could probably write a lot more about the messages in this book, but its best that you read and explore them for yourself. The book is inexpensive; the return on your investment will be rich.

Thought provoking
Bought this book after a friend told me about it. This is an enjoyable book that manages to be both entertaining and very thought provoking. Mr. Strelecky writes with an engaging, refreshing style. I look forward to reading much more from him.

thought provoking
"The Why You are Here Cafe" is thought provoking book that makes us ponder the purpose of our daily lives. It empowers the reader to pursue their passions and realize that anything is possible and that we dont have to live by societies rules.

A great cookbook for flavorful meals
I became a fan of Caprial Pence's which watching her cooking show on PBS. I own all of her cookbooks, but because this was the first cookbook that I purchased by Caprial it remains one of my favorites. The Lamb Shanks with Wild Mushroom Sauce, Beef Stew with Polenta, and the Raspberry Lemon Curd Tart are dishes that I regularly prepare when entertaining. Friends still talk about the Roasted Leg of Lamb with Hazelnut and Gorgonzola Cream Sauce that we served for Christmas dinner. A real winner!

Caprial's Cafe Favorites
I refer to this book over and over again. The Flank Steak with Green Peppercorn Aioli is a favorite! Great on the grill; make lots of the rub and store it so you can make it anytime. The Bread Pudding is another winner. The entire book is fabulous!

Best meat entre' I've ever had!!!!!
I used Caprial's Beef Tenderloin with Mushroom Sauce for an important dinner party. It was the best entre' I've ever had..even at an exclusive restaurant. I thought the sauce would be a lot of trouble, but it wasn't. It was very worth the effort. My dinner party was a great success!!

spirituality with a smile
I read this book over the span of about a year. I found it more for entertainment and personal interest while seeking God rather than very serious spiritual reading. Every time I would read a chapter, I would come from it feeling refreshed and closer to God, much like a cup of coffee for the soul. Sweet goes off on a lot of tangents, which may be aggravating to some, but if you just let go, Sweet does a great job of subtly making a point. It's nice to see things from a different perspective sometimes. One final note- his chapter on smell brought me to tears and stuck with me for weeks. That chapter alone made the book worthwhile.

A Cup of what your Soul needs
This book should be on every Christian theologians' bookshelf. If you can't stop to read something this good- you have little business meddling in the affairs of God who is rich in flavor and is the life - full of energy and zest. Mr. Sweet uses words like honey to describe the world as he sees it and as we can see it through a spiritually awakened frame of mind and soul. I came away feeling refreshed like never in my life- by a book that is.. Those who want to fulfill their hearts' longings and those who want to bettter understand the God of this universe- get your copy and share it with others! Even those who just need to regroup and get a new perspective on their lives will benefit by reading.

A Cup of Coffee at the Soul Cafe
Insightful, revealing, thought provoking. A look at Leonard and ourselves in a practical authentic manner.

Everyone has two countries - his own and Paris
Wow! I found this little gem at the bookstore at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. The cover attracted me because it looked like a scene I had seen many times when I lived and wrote in Paris. Any writer who has spent time in Cafe le Dome or Le Select will get multiple nostalgia attacks looking over the pictures and reading the quotes from Shaw, Papa Hemingway, Camus and the other greats. The review title above about everyone having two countries comes from Thomas Jefferson who loved Paris. Too bad he is dead, for he too would have also loved Val Clark's wonderful little book.

Celebrating the fullness of being
A Literary Companion, indeed! As a writer, lover of Paris and cafes--I found this book delightful, and the perfect companion for a cold winter day. For like the cafe it celebrates, it has the ability to lift my spirits the moment I "enter" its sumptuous pages. Val Clark has done a masterful job in matching up the evocative photographs of Doisneau and Brassai, the art of Van Gogh, Manet, Bemelmans and much more--with the words of writers and artists that endure because they resonate with that fullness of being that the cafe nurtures. This little book pays loving homage to that sensibility. Thank you Val Clark!

The Parisian Cafe: A Literary Companion
Val Clark's selection of images and quotations evoking the literary life of Paris cafes is like sitting down to a cafe creme at Les Deux Magots with your favorite writers. Clark has scoured literary sources both familiar and overlooked to compile an ecclectic assemblage of testimonies on the allure of Paris cafes. She pairs these testimonies with images (photographs, oils, watercolors) so naturally that it seems the writers and artists had collaborated: Langston Hughes and Vincent Van Gogh, Irwin Shaw and Andre Kertesz, Henry Miller and LeRoy Neiman, and many, many more. The Introduction gives an insightful and appreciative overview of the essential role of cafes in Paris literary and artistic life. Like a good cafe, this charming books offers a respite from our hectic work-a-day lives. A delight!

Holy Chihuahua!
Actually, I'm not sure what kind of pooch Poncho is but he is without a doubt the greatest cartoon character since Calvin.

This book is loaded with great writing, unique art and the funniest punchlines since Larson.

Grab this collection -- it's a winner!

best
pooch cafe is by far the funniest comic i have even read. its better than garfield and calvin&hobbes

Sublime.
Pooch Cafe remains one of the most genuine comics available today in our papers and one of the funniest.

The most heartening thing about the strip is that Poncho knows what he's doing when he's drinking out of the toilet, or doing all the other things that a dog does and yet he can't help it. Because its in his nature. He is a dog and unlike make strips in which Cartoon dogs become mini-humans, Pooch Cafe retains the basic spirit and nature of the characters it protrays, letting each part stay true to itself.

It is lovingly illustrated and ultimately it has soul - a rarity in syndicated strips today.

A superb buy! Watch out for this man!

Fans of the deadpan darkness of Raymond Chandler who are also interested in the magic realism of Gabriel García M´rquez should enjoy this unusual but highly effective mixture of both styles by the author of La Maravilla. Born into a family of migrant workers in Arizona, Alfredo Véa Jr. was a soldier in Vietnam and put himself through law school by working at a series of grueling jobs. That background plays a part in this intriguing story set in the Hispanic underworld of San Francisco's Mission District, where two killings 40 years apart are linked by chains of blood and history.

Melting pot at a boiling point?
Vea's book looks at the issue of immigration from an unusual viewpoint, using mysticism, religion, and simple slight of hand magic to tell a story that incorporates not only the struggles that immigrants to the U.S. endure, but also the daily events that permeate the lives of all people. The story is centered around an evening of inexplicable occurrences, ranging from a mysterious murder to several fires started in the surrounding area, and expands to tell the story of several immigrants, whose unique experiences led them all to San Francisco in the "present." I thought that the use of mystery and the issues of faith and magic were extremely interesting, but what I found even more intriguing were the stories and experiences Vea's characters related through various methods. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and appreciated the opportunity to enter into a world that I have little experience with.

A Melting Pot of Magic
Vea has written a masterpiece with Silver Cloud. Addressing the very serious issue of immigration in America and the search of many for their place in the nation, Vea manages to show his readers the beauty and the ugliness of our country with characters who are magically real. The novel urges the reader to identify his/her own feelings about their own culture as well as the blending of many in attempted assimilation. Interwoven with this challenge to culture is a beautifully written story that allows the reader to suspend his/her assumptions about reality and let their imaginations run wild.

Silver Cloud Cafe
Mr. Vea weaves a fasinating tale full of symbolism. It is a unique view of of the world as seen through the eyes of tis observer of latino culture in California. His writing is more an epic poem than strictly a novel. A highly exciting work.

At the Bombay Café, Neela Paniz's Santa Monica, California, restaurant, Paniz takes the classical Indian cooking she learned while growing up in India and gives it new twists. Her dishes have the brightness and warmth of a California day rather than the smothering intensity of her native sun. She also lightens them by using less ghee and vegetable oil than is traditional. The 160-plus dishes in The Bombay Cafe cookbook call for the full range of Indian seasonings, from kari leaves to sambar powder, and specific dals, which means that a visit to an Indian food store may be in order.

Knowing that Westerners like soups (which are not part of the classic Indian table), Paniz creates Golden Lentil Soup with Lemon and Chiles, among others. She remedies a similar lack of appetizers by suggesting you start the meal with chile-sparked Potato Pancakes and other savories that Indians normally enjoy at tea time.

A prime feature of Paniz's eclecticism is her salads. The most popular is California Tandoori Salad, a combination of grilled chicken, paneer cheese, mushrooms, and raw vegetables, all tossed in a cilantro-cumin dressing and topped with crisp fried noodles. Dipping into the distinctive cooking of Southern India, Paniz offers recipes for fluffy Uttampams and helps you through the complexities of making a paper-thin, pizza-size dosa with a potato and onion stuffing, via careful text and a series of illustrations.

For Indian food that is fresh and pleasantly different, The Bombay Cafe is a book that can guide you into new adventures. --Dana Jacobi

Bringing the Magic home...
Bombay Cafe was my favorite haunt when I lived in Santa Monica. When I discovered that Neela had published a cookbook of her remarkable food, I bought it immediately. I am happy to say that this book includes many of my favorite dishes, written simply and clearly enough that I can faithfully reproduce everything I loved when dining at Bombay Cafe. In my experience, this is not something that 'restaurant' cookbooks commonly achieve. An excellent effort by an uncommon chef. Thank you, Neela!

Light and Creative twist to Indian cooking
This is one of the best cookbooks I have come across. I love the recipes - they are creative and light - like the Tandoori Chicken salad, or the Garbanzo beans sweet and sour salad. There are also some very Indian recipes that make you travel back in your mind to India - like the Railway station potato curry, or the Frankies. Most recipes are fairly easy to make.

This is Indian cooking with a fresh approach, and a lot of style.I have tried and served so many recipes to friends, and the reactions are always - that tastes GOOD!

The best indian cookbook that I have
I ate several times on Bombay Cafe Restaurant in Los Angeles. My huge admiration for indian food begun when I first tasted Neela's "Lamb Vindaloo" (the recipe is not included in this book). Since this day I decided to learn how to cook indian food. I bought several indian cookbooks but this is the one that I use more often. Try the chicken frankies, the shrimp with dill and cilantro and the tamarind/date chutney and you will understand why this is a five star cookbook.

Living with a new gourmet chef - and loving it!
My fiance got this cookbook for Christmas, and has already made four recipes from it - all of which turned out perfectly! He's generally one to "test" new recipes on me before making them for friends, but these were all spectacular on the first try. Especially wonderful so far has been the risotto with butternut squash and the ravioli stuffing with butternut squash and mascarpone cheese. Absolutely amazing. When you can make cooking fun, it's definitely a triumph - and Rogers & Gray have completely succeeded in that respect. BENE!!

Totally satisfied
Fabulous, concise, expansive, enjoyable! Rogers and gray make it possible for my friends to think I am a kitchen God!!!

i'm a total fan
My boyfriend and I are good cooks and food mavens who nonetheless don't cook a lot. We know from great food and the recipes in this book are superb. In no other book have I ever found recipes which consistently yielded such high--i.e., restaurant-quality--results. Another great thing is the fact that many of these recipes don't require a lot of expensive/hard-to-find ingredients. We cooked out of this cookbook and its sequel, these two books alone, for a year and a half. Then we visited the restaurant in London, which is sublime--but that is another story.

A great book
I loved this book. Illustrated with beautiful photos, this is a mixture of a travel and a recipe book, covering Asia, Africa and South America. Whilst some of the recipes have an (authentic) array of ingredients, there are few difficult techniques involved. You do sometimes have to persevere with surprising instructions though, in the belief that it will all be good in the end! And so far, it always has been.

the best cookbook
I was lucky enough to find thid cookbook in the Oslo Public Library. For me is this cookbook really the best one I have ever had. I have tried maybe 10 dishes and ALL of them were very tasty! My husband and I have some favourites, like Saag Paneer and Kashmiri Gobi but we are constantly trying new ones. It is true, though, that if I lived in the Czech Republic (where I originally come from) it would be very hard to get all the ingredients. But here in Oslo where 25% of the population are immigrants, it is not very hard! And the paneer is actually possible to make at home-that is what I do! Just find the receipe on the net! I really recommend this cookbook to those who want to enjoy vegetarian meals even though they are not vegetarians! Because eating this, you won't miss meat!!

Add global pizzazz to your cooking!
In short: This is one of the most inspiring cookbooks I've come across in ages. Nicely designed but not overdone, interesting and often funny personal travelogue tidbits, luscious photographs, easy instructions and best of all, the dishes are divine. There are a couple of hard-to-find ingredients such as paneer (Indian cheese) and I wish the authors had suggested replacements for such items, but overall, I've had very good luck with these recipes. Dinner guests love 'em, too. Add one or two to make add pizzazz to an ordinary meal, or mix'n'match a whole bunch of them for an eclectic smorgasbord of world cuisine.

My Favorite Cookbook
I first discovered this cookbook some years back when I was part of a group doing volunteer work in rural Brazil. Most of us were vegetarians, so we took this book along with us for recipe ideas. We were very limited on available ingredients and were forced to omit or substitute about half of everything that was required. Nevertheless, we produced really great dishes from that book. As soon as I got back to the US, I ordered a copy for myself and started cooking some truly amazing meals!

The Horn of the Moon Cookbook has a lot going for it. First, unlike most other vegetarian cookbooks, it does not concern itself with fat content. (A lot of the dishes are extremely high in fat.) There are plenty of resources out there for people looking to reduce fat or cut calories, and most vegetarians, even those who are highly health conscious, are willing to splurge now and then for something really good. (Just like people who eat meat.)

Also, I was amazed by the number and variety of recipes. When I first got the book, I didn't know where to begin. Salads, sandwiches, soups, pastas, pizzas, desserts, breakfast foods -- it all looked so good, and the results almost never disappointed. (The only notable exception was the cashew french toast.) This book will keep you busy for weeks!

In addition, the recipes will appeal to everyone, not just vegetarians. If you have a friend or relative that you want to introduce to a vegetarian lifestyle, just cook them a few meals using these recipes. Or if you are a non-vegetarian and need to plan a meal for a group of people containing some vegetarians, use this book. The vegetarians will appreciate it, and the non-vegetarians will enjoy it and probably not even notice the lack of meat.

My favorite recipe is the one for Pizza Alfredo. I guarantee you've never had pizza like this before! Every time I make it, I'm always amazed when I take the first bite at how good it is. I also enjoy the Black Bean Soup a lot. I usually quintuple the recipe (I have a very large pot.) and freeze most of it to make it last, so I can have a bowl every day for a month, or longer. Also, every halloween, I buy an extra pumpkin (in addition to the one for the jack o'lantern) to make the Pumpkin Pie recipe. That's now part of my halloween tradition.

If you are a vegan, you probably won't get as much out of this book as people who are willing to eat dairy products and eggs. There is a lot of dairy in this book! But there are some vegan recipes, and of course you can adjust some of the other recipes to your needs. The same goes for people who are really watching their fat intake.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. Different recipes will appeal to different people, and it would be hard to imagine someone who couldn't find at least a handful of recipes in it that would delight them. This is definitely my favorite cookbook; I've never found one that even comes close!

The Best Meatless Cookbook You'll Ever Own!
Excellent recipes for those who don't eat meat. Even for those who can't live without their Big Macs, this wonderful cookbook will pleasantly surprise you with very tasty meatless entrees, soups, sandwiches, delicious cookies, breads and cakes. This is not your ordinary vegetarian cookbook. Now my favorite cookbook!

Great recipes even for non-vegetarians
I'm not a vegetarian, but I received this book as a gift a few years ago. It is now almost as dog-eared and food-stained as my Joy of Cooking. Every recipe I've tried is delicious, and most use ingredients that are easy to get. My non-vegetarian family loves the recipes too. Horn of the Moon is a restaurant, so the dishes have to be ones that people will actually order.
