Balanced Brand by John Foley with Julie Kendrick is a refreshing and enlightening book that helps people focus on alignment of values. It is not every day that business leaders read about the success of their companies from the true alignment of their Head, Heart and Hands. As the book explains the success of companies like Tiffany is due to their focus on employee training on Tiffany's true values-world-class quality( Their Head), uncompromising service( Their Heart) and social responsibility( Their Hands). They have been able to align their values since 1837 by focused training and transfer of their Core Values, which happens to Align with the many stakeholders.

I enjoyed reading and learning from the Balanced Brand and I would recommend this book to all , who are looking to Crystallize their thinking about Brands. This book will help them develop a plan for achieving that goal, develop a sincere desire for the things that are real for them and all of their stakeholders and also to develop supreme confidence in their organization and it's abilities to execute the plan consistently over many decades.

John Foley's approach to combining brand identity with corporate values and culture is a worthwhile strategy to assimilate into one's company. Everyone is aware that a brand will get a customer 'in the door' but Foley's strategy for identifying key stakeholders and keeping them engaged, is a strategy every company should learn how to employ and practice. I would highly reconmend this book to all who are interested in advancing both the mission and bottom line of their companies. This book would have particular appeal to young people entering the work force as a tool for staying engaged with their comapany's customers.

Provocative new insights on growing brands in today's world

Finally, an approach that takes branding to the next level! I found Foley's thinking on creating and protecting brands by aligning corporate and stakeholder values to be refreshing and enlightening. Today's news is filled with examples of corporate failure due to scandals, breech of trust, and greed. This only underscores the need to project appropriate values.

Additionally, I believe Foley's perspective on the interdependence of a strong reputation and a strong brand is extremely insightful-bordering on revolutionary. He explores how the effects of competition, abrupt changes in customer preference, skyrocketing promotional costs, and even a company's own actions can erode the brand or reputation.

Foley includes helpful strategies and tools to assess stakeholder alignment and put his systems into practice. I highly recommend this book to anyone charged with managing brands and building corporate growth. In my opinion, this is a very important body of work.

Even as we're feeling we've got all our bases covered, finally, Mr. Foley opens our eyes to a critical consideration too many executives--in both the private and public sectors--have failed to appreciate. He not only does an effective job of presenting and substantiating the problem, he then tells us how to deal with it. I really wish this book had been available a decade or more ago! It should be on every manager's "must read" list.

Led to higher ground...

Balanced Brand guided me to higher ground.

For nearly two years, my head has been awash in the technology and behavorial shifts accelerating due to internet connectivity globally and what that entails. There is a river of change flowing and it's reaching flood stage. Blogs, podcasts, vlogs, online social networking sites, news aggregation tools (allowing people to scan and consume hundreds of blog posts and news headlines in a single sitting), and instant online conversations about brand-affecting events are facilitating shifts of consciousness and awareness that profoundly effects a brand.

As a consequence of all of these enabling technologies and shifts, there is a new participatory culture emerging which is allowing stakeholders in record numbers to participate vs. just being passive recipients of some miscellaneous communications campaign or messaging thrust...and this emerging culture is out of anyone's control.

Balanced Brand made me stop and reconsider the complexities of all these changes occurring and instead climb to the top of the hill, sit down and look down on the river. I thought about the deeper meanings and strategies required to guarantee the river down below will be navigable...regardless of what technologies or cultures reveal themselves. This book is not about technology or participatory paradigm shifts, however. It's about balance, the essence of a brand, and how to create and utilize balanced brand strategies.

Within its pages is a framework that allows any organization to understand and assess their values, those of their customers, shareholders, employees and communities within which they're involved, and be able to then understand where and how to align them. Though it doesn't say this as overtly as I am, what I thought was obvious was that -- once this work was completed -- strategic direction would be crystal clear.

Once balanced branding strategies are in place, every stakeholder knows what to do. They know what the brand stands for and what it means. Employees know how to perform and use the river-of-change-shifts to facilitate brand enhancement instead of being victims and drowning in it. What hit me squarely due to my involvement in technology, is that a participatory culture can be created that sparks innovation and creativity, grows top-line revenue and customer satisfaction, all of which is of vital importance to management and shareholders.

That was the higher ground I was guided to by Balanced Brand. It helped me focus and see that first-and-foremost it is the essence of the brand and the brand in practice that really matters. Everything else then falls into place.

I am a Web analyst, and I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in, or must report to management about their comapny's Web site. There are other great writers on the subject (Jim Sterne, Bryan Eisenberg, Jim Novo), but Hurol's book has the great advantage of being really to the point. This book WILL help you start an analysis practive whithin your company (which I urge you to do!). Once it's done, move on to the above mentioned authors. The book will tell you about filters (are they important!), actionable metrics, marketing issues, etc. This excellent work is really worth reading.

The best yet on Web Measurement

I can't believe I'm going to be the only fan of this book once its popularity spreads further out of the author's native Australia. It is the best book yet that I have read on the topic of Web site measurement and analysis. Admittedly there aren't that many out there yet on this increasingly hot topic but it is infinitely better than, say, "Web Site Analysis and Reporting" and soon I'll be able to judge how it compares to Jim Sterne's book "Web Metrics" which is just out.

Why do I like it? Hurol Inan, the author, spent eleven years at Andersen Consulting and Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, which helps ensure that the focus is a commercial one and based on a wealth of business experience. Furthermore, far from being too `management consulting' to be intelligible and practical, the book addresses operational and implementation issues as well as giving enough technical detail without being overwhelming.

That said, I found the first half of the book, which is more business and marketing in focus, to be superior to the second half which is a little light at times on the operational and implementation side of things. That does mean it is easy to read, however, and communicates the key concepts, practices and approaches clearly and succinctly.

Definitely worth a read. The accompanying Web site is also a good resource of supplementary information including vendor details.

The information presented in this book, is like its style and presentation, simple, immediately accessible and implementable.

The book may not apply to highly trained and experienced web designers, but will serve as a terrific information source for non-ICT people that need to get an immediate grasp of the key concepts, the terminology, the possible applications and ultimately in implementing the strategies and ideas.

This is a terrific, and ongoing introduction into this important area of website marketing.

You are not going to find such an useful review of the state of the art in Web Metrics in any other book. The content is clear and structured. Perhaps the only weakness is the length of the book. Hurol Inan has knowledge enough on the subject to expand the information about specific metrics that are just defined, but not thoroughly explained in the book. Fortunately, the companion website helps to expand some of the topics in the book. Additionally, other books on the topic seems more like a presentation of the services provided by the author rather than a true explanation on web metric. Fortunately, Hurol Inan writes in a much more objective style.

In summary, an extremely useful introduction.

I am responsible for the web metrics in a financial corporation in California. This is the first book I have come across that brings the much needed business perspective to our online initiatives (not biased towards online marketing and advertising).

Equipped with the ideas and the framework put forward in the book, I was able to influence the direction of our web site. It was full with material that helped me raised the awareness of measurement across our organisation. Additionally, it also provided some starting points towards the implementation of web metrics.

This book is definitely one of the first when it comes to web site management.

I like the style of the book as well. Well written, to the point.

Nirvana was an iconic album of the alternative rock genre. "Classic Rock Albums: Nevermind Nirvana" is just short of the music CD itself in fully understanding the album that made the grunge movement of the early nineties so memorable. Taking a look at the early days of Nirvana's career complete with black and white photographs of the band's early days, information on recording sessions, and information on each track of the million selling album. "Classic Rock Albums: Nevermind Nirvana" is an absolute must have for any Nirvana fan who can't get enough of trivia for the group.

This book gives an excellent account of what led to the great CD we now know as Nevermind. It briefly describes Nirvana's rise to stardom and gives a glimpse into the personalities of the members, but is at its best in describing how the actual production of the album went. Using numerous sources, the author lets us listen to Nevermind in a completely different way. The only downside is that it is a relatively short work, and I left wanting more

This is an excellent book on Nirvana, and it is too sad that it is out-of-print. It contains important interviews and write-ups from several pop culture mags of that era on the band--on performances--on their overall views...

Does this signal that Kurt was right: Grunge is dead?

Well, perhaps dead but not yet interred into the earth.

Yeah, yeah, it's really lame to buy a book about them and all, but this isn't just another stupid ripoff fan book- this is really good stuff. It's funny. It's sad. It gives Courtney a chance to look less evil- I changed my mind about her because of this book. And it's not just about Kurt like most Nirvana books are- there's a good amount of stuff on Krist and the various drummers as well. Serious Nirvana fans really need to read this.

This is an excellent book about marketing to children. Based on extensive research into the attitudes, perceptions, emotions and preferences of children around the world, it tells you in no uncertain terms how to target one of the biggest and most influential consumer populations on earth. Children between the ages of 8 and 14, dubbed "tweens" ("tweenagers") by the authors, are a curious group. They are also a lonely, insecure group with an engaging mix of naiveté and sophistication. Devilishly hard to capture, they are a rich economic prize, controlling an enormous amount of money of their own, and strongly influencing their families' purchases, even of major appliances. This book shows you what matters to these kids and what false notes to avoid if you want to tap into their buying power. We acknowledge that some readers may be uncomfortable with such tactics as setting up a web site that pretends to belong to a friendly child in order to attract kids and start buzz about some brand, but the book's reporting is accurate, practical and forward looking, for good or ill.

Not only does the book teach you how to market products better, it gets you thinking different. Suddenly, you're developing products and strategies with kids in mind, and you understand why certain products are big hits with kids.

Another funny thing about this book...it helps you to understand kids better. For readers with their own kids, this could be the greates value of all.

He not only analyzes data from 7 countries, but includes his own experiences with working with kids and with kids related brands. He is able to get his point across without being boring, looking at the subject form different angles.

Full of interviews, photos and clear profiles of the most influential creatives and their ad campaigns. Recognizes the quality work in advertising and the "guts" of what it takes to make it in this business. Avoids cliches and soundbyte advice, but goes into the complex personalities of the people who are behind some of the classic campaigns. Well written and well organized. As an award-winning copywriter myself, I have often turned to this book for inspiration or for a "reality check." It belongs on the bookshelf of anyone starting out or well into the advertising business.

I bought this for my boyfriend who is very hard to buy for. He has whatever he needs, and if he wants something, he'll buy it for himself. But I remember him telling me that IRONMAN was his favorite character growing up. When I did a search on Amazon and found this item, I bought it, knowing only a small chapter would be on IRONMAN. Well, he LOVED it! He read it within the first few days! He listened to the audio by Stan Lee. And even I read it and learned all about the history of the superheroes. I cannot wait to learn more, to read more, to buy more. The best part is that He Loved It! It was the best gift I ever bought him.

A DREAM BOOK FOR MARVEL COMIC BOOK FANS!
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-23
We've all heard audio commentary on DVD's but audio commentary on a book? That's just what you get in a fabulous new book from Sterling Publishing, "The Amazing Marvel Universe". The book is a beautiful, over-sized hardcover that has a very unique feature to it. It has a speaker with push buttons that play audio comments from longtime Marvel Comics writer, editor-in-chief, and publisher, the legendary Stan Lee. The book itself is written by another Marvel legend, himself a former Marvel Editor-in-chief as well as writer and comics historian, Roy Thomas. The book features Stan's choices of the 50 greatest moments in Marvel Comic's history.

These moments begin not with Marvel Comics, but rather in the Golden Age era of Timely comics when a young Stanley Leiber took the pseudonym of Stan Lee and had his first comic story published, a two-page Captain America text story in Captain America #3 in 1941. As you flip through the 200 page book and read about these great moments in Marvel history, you'll see a number that corresponds to the appropriate audio track to hear Stan's comment on that particular event. There are 68 comments in all for a total of 45 minutes of audio.

One of the interesting moments to make the Top 50 moments is the second one which introduced Fin Fang Foom in Strange Tales #89 from 1961. This is chosen I think as an example of pre-super hero Marvel Comics and how the restrictive Comics Code was dealt with by Stan. Of course the first major moment comes with the introduction of the Fantastic Four in November 1961. In his audio comment, Stan relates how he was about to quit the comic book business and was asked by publisher Martin Goodman to come up with a team of heroes to compete with DC's Justice League. Stan decided to do a hero book the way he wanted to, thinking it would flop. Of course, the rest is history.

In talking about the Hulk, we hear the oft-told story of how the Hulk's color was changed from grey to green because the printer was having a hard time getting the grey a consistent color. Stan says he decided to do a book about Thor because he wanted to have a mythological God, and the Norse mythology was not as well known as Greek or other myths. Other great moments that made the list are the release of Spiderman #1, X-men #1, Avengers #1, Daredevil #1 etc. But don't think it's all about number one issues. Once you move into the mid-60's, the moments focus on the first appearance of various characters as well as classic storylines.

One moment that I was very excided to see make the list was the wedding of Reed Richards and Sue Storm in Fantastic Four Annual #3 in 1965 and starring just about every hero and villain in the Marvel Universe. I remember buying that comic at a convention sometime in the 70's and still have it today. Other great moments include the first appearance of the Silver Surfer and Galactus, The Black Panther, and one of my personal favorites, The Vision. The Vision was a brilliant concept by writer Roy Thomas who used his love of Golden Age heroes to come up with his unique android creation.

The Kree-Skrull War, the Death of Gwen Stacy, the debut of the New X-Men, they are all here and you could not find two men better fit to present these 50 great moments than Stan Lee and Roy Thomas. Loaded with great art by the likes of jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Wally Wood, John Buscema, Neal Adams, Jim Steranko, and John Romita! This is an absolute must have for fans of marvel Comics. Well worth the $50!

Surely, an adequate test of whether or not you've purchased a good book is a faint sadness at turning the last page. If so, then Stan Lee's Amazing Marvel Universe is a good book.

Written by Roy Thomas, a Marvel scribe and editor for many years, the book catalogs the major works of Stan Lee at Marvel in an insightful and entertaining manner.

Highlighting 50 "legendary Marvel moments," the book also treats fans to hundreds of full-color cover and page reproductions dealing with important events in Marvel's vast superheroic history.

Making the book even more enticing is the digital playback device that is attached. Containing 68 voice tracks from Stan the Man himself, the device lets readers gain special insight from the uber-imaginative creator. These selected excerpts from an interview with Lee enhance the printed information and illustrative glory found within the pages to such a degree as to make this a must-have for Marvel fans, comic book enthusiasts, pop culture nuts, or what have you.

If I were to wish one thing about this book, it would be that it could be thicker, with more pages and more information. Considering the years Roy Thomas spent behind the scenes at Marvel, he is in a position to reveal historical tidbits that many fans-turned-researchers could only dream of. As it is, he brings to light several items that I never knew, even after close to 35 years of reading comics. You might be surprised, as I was, to learn that Marvel's character the Black Panther once changed his name for political reasons, or that the Comics Code Authority rejected artwork for a particular Marvel comic due to a puff of smoke in the panel. Interesting stuff, to be sure.

Stan Lee's Amazing Marvel Universe is highly recommended for all fans of superhero comics, comic book history or Marvel Comics in general.

Former Marvel editor Roy Thomas composed and writes the true pictoral history of Marvel comics, better than anyone has-because he was there for most of it. Stan "the Man" Lee, in a special feature of this book, narrates his version of the Marvel History in a small recorder on the side of this book. This is not a book on tape, but a visual mass media production that "True Believers" and all the Merry Marvel Marching Society (Classic Marvel fans would understand that term) out there should get. If you love how your favorite favorite characters were created, this history is for you, Both Stan and Roy tell the begining of Marvel story to the present like NO ONE else could!

In the particularly succinct, humorous and sharp style that is unique to Marty, the reasons behind the land mines are covered along with how to avoid or, when necessary, lessen their damaging effects. I've also found his `Worth Repeating' summaries to be very useful in their own right as quick reference reminders when I need to refresh the lessons.

Like many things, it boils down to practicing common sense and extending common courtesies, useful in everything beyond the sales environment that is the context of the book.

Marty doesn't go in to the buyers' land mines, but his `Leadership Land Mines' is an excellent companion piece to this one.Leadership Land Mines! 8 Management Catastrophes and How to Avoid Them

Valuable gems of information on communication gaffes that should be corrected in the B2B sales world. Best nuggets for me included removing "call me back" from my vocabulary; avoid handing Mr. or Mrs. Whizbang a "to-do" list, and why scribbling notes in margin of your day planner don't count. A quick read of this book will help set you apart from the amateurs.

So great I read it twice!

Not only have I read it twice, I am buying another copy for a client. This book is sharp, true, and funny. My favorite part is on agreed upon next steps. Marty says not having them is just "visiting". I am using these agreed upon next steps as a prerequisite for more time investment. This has helped my sales effectiveness measureably. When they're difficult, my radar for a time waster is on RED ALERT. Thanks, Marty for a great book. Seeing you speak was a great treat as well.

I wish every business person would read this book and require it to be read by everyone they hire.

I am continuously amazed by the lack of basic communication skills, not only by recent graduates, but, in some cases, by successful business people.

I believe Chapter nine, on grammar and spelling, could be a significant help to most TV newscasters.

This is easy to read, but contains lessons that we all could benefit from (from which we could all benefit!).

What you don't know can hurt you . . .

Ours is a data-driven society, and in no environment is good data more important than in the realm of business. Every CEO and owner/manager keeps close watch on the details that add up to the bottom line, yet it seems that few of them know how to evaluate the marketing department's contribution to the overall health and well-being of the business. It doesn't have to be that way; Gal Borenstein's book can help managers and CEOs understand and manage their marketing investment to maximize returns.

What Really Counts for CEOs offers up a body of knowledge and a set of tools to help CEOs get a handle on this particular business investment. And that's one of his first bits of insight: marketing really is an investment in the firm's future rather than an awkward cost that no one understands.

Throughout the book, Borenstein identifies ways that the person in the head office can gather solid information and develop a strategy to manage marketing in an effective manner. Some of his points:

Every company is unique, and its road to success must be unique, as well. The CEO should resist the urge follow the pack if the pack isn't going where the company needs to go.

Bold thinking that escapes the conventional can help the business thrive in a maturing industry.

There is little advantage to resting on past successes if those successes don't lead toward new and better ways of doing business.

Borenstein uses plenty of case studies to support his points. He shares his own experiences and those of his clients to illustrate how so-called "best practices" often are not the best. A brief look at the business strategies at eBay, Netflix and Oracle, among others, demonstrate how CEOs turn information into success.

What Really Counts for CEOs is an easy read for any business manager. The author shares his message without reams of data, spreadsheets and charts and graphs. Don't be fooled by the book's accessibility, though. While he does not dish out a detailed set of instructions, the author does provide some thoughtful guidance and a starting place for the CEO who wants to gather useful information and use the full potential of his marketing department.

A must read not just for CEOs, but every marketer worth their salt!

"This a must read not just for CEOs, but also for all marketers - seasoned or not. Mr. Borenstein gives a different perspective for approaching marketing, the ever elusive ROI calculations, and why it may not be such a great idea to follow best practices. Certainly the most illuminating marketing book I've read in a long, long time. I highly recommend this to any marketer or CEO."

All CEOs should read this book! It is honest and refreshing to read a book that opens the flood gates and encourages CEOs to think differently about marketing metrics that can position their companies for sustained success -- especially in these economic turmoil times.

Mr. Borenstein's book should be required reading for anyone involved in marketing. In this day and age of elastic demand, the winners will be folks that are informed and employ not only basic but comprehensive marketing principals. This book is not only instructive, but explores successful marketing, business and bottomline strategies.

I hope this is the first in a long series of "how-to's" that the author shares his expertise; not only for seasoned marketers and CEO's, but for novices as well.

In What Really Counts, Gal Borenstein has authored a shrewd, penetrating glimpse into the fundamental dysfunctions of corporate marketing. Both eye-opening and soundly constructive, the book is an absolute "must-read" for forward-minded CEOs, and all who value return on investment, measurable results, and the noble crusade against the perilous status quo.

This is a quick read, broken up into short "lessons"--the last 20 of which are Ludwig's riffs on quotes from the famous, from George Bernard Shaw to Oprah. While it's aimed primarily at salespeople, the book has some wonderful things to say about many of the principles I discuss in this newsletter and in my own book, Principled Pro fit: Marketing That Puts People First: integrity, honesty, how to be an effective listener. The story he tells about Gandhi's integrity (I won't spoil the surprise) is worth the whole book right there.

Shel Horowitz's award-winning sixth book, Principled Profit: Marketing That Puts People First, demonstrates how to build a business around ethics, environmental sustainability, and cooperative practices--and how to develop marketing that highlights those advantages.

As an Author, Coach, and Motivational Speaker I read alot of books about people, their motivations, and their relationships. Wise Moves provides loads of education and inspiration in the form of 60 short stories. The first 20 are about life, the second 20 about sales, and the last 20 are stirring quotes from people like Ghandi, John F. Kennedy, and Leonardo Da Vinci.

Some of my favorites are:

Power Physiology - Creating a physical presence that speaks of success.

Involving the prospect in the sales presentation - engaging them at multiple sensory levels allows us to judge their interest by watching their actions

Victor Frankel - The last of the human freedoms is to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances.

I agree with the statement that when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. Wise Moves is a book that gives me 60 opportunities to be ready for a teacher to appear. Buy yourself a copy today.

As George quotes on his web site, "If you want to change what's happening in your life, you have to change what you feed your mind." In a small, easy-to-read book, George has compiled a wealth of wisdom to feed your mind that will enrich your life, energize your personal and business relationships and hone your sales skills. Whether your business is sales of a product or service, or just selling yourself and your ideas, you will gain from his proven sales techniques and insightful understanding of human nature. George has a passion for helping people utilize their unique gifts and reach their potential. This book is a great "first step" for those beginning the journey, and a practical refresher for those who desire to achieve and maintain a level of peak performance.

I REALLY like this book! I'll admit I'm a sucker for the quick tip format because I like being able to pick up a book like this and get a payoff in just a few minutes.

Ludwig has packed this book with excellent advice and he has organized it so it is instantly accessible. The guy obviously has a lot of experience and he shares it very effectively.

I've read lots of self-help books by some of the top authors; I've moved my cheese and swam with the FISH! But this book is as good as or better than most of the books I've read in the past couple of years.

If you are pursuing a better life at home or in business, this book is absolutely invaluable. I loved it for it's clear and concise message about what the world-class do that differentiates them, and the results they get, from the rest. It is also great to be able to open the book anywhere and get clear and profound methodology into the workings of world-class performers, without having to read the book from the beginning.
And the author is very magnanimous in providing countless referrals to other books, CD's and even movies that help the reader get further understanding and systems on how and why the elite perform better in the world.
An easy read, and very motivational, this book has changed my whole life, and my business.
