A Wonderful Portrait
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-15
Having admired Bernstein for many years, I have always felt that there was a lack of photos from his final years. Here, Seiler has provided a wonderful portrait of the master in his many moods. The close-ups reveal Bernstein in intense thought while his candid photos (eg playing ping-pong) allow us to see his more playful side. Rarely are there photos without the cigarette in hand but this surely is his trademark. The comments by those who knew him add to the mystique and wonder of a man who embraced life so intensely.

Excellent tape. Highly recommended!!
Helpful Votes: 38 out of 38 total.
Review Date: 1999-02-13
John Bradshaw identifies 10 reasons (which he calls demons) that destroy relationships, such as high expectations, inefficient communications, family rules, familiarity, need for parental-type of partner. Each reason made me take a hard look at how I contribute to the demise of my relations. Each reason is well thought of and hits home. John also points out to other works that can be a valuable follow up. I highly recommend this tape as a must have for those who are serious about relationships. John talks to you and not at you in these tapes.

Thank you John for a wonderful insight!

Mother Daughter Book Club: One of My Favorites
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-31
This warm, inspiring book offers perhaps one of the best ideas ever - creating a mother-daughter book club for preteens in the service of building a communication network for those tough adolescent years. In the process the growth among both moms and daughters is lovely and the suggested books on the money. It suddenly occurs to me that it's kind of a predecessor to Reading Lolita In Tehran in that it is structured around meetings of the group over the years. I've given away countless copies.

I can only say my children and I have greatly enjoyed the stories in this book. It makes for good object lessons, bedtime reading and the children love the pictures and exploring the art within the book. I would have rather purchased a hardback of this one though.

A children's picturebook anthology of classic Jewish tales
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-07
Barbara Goldin's Ten Holiday Jewish Children's Stories is a unique children's picturebook anthology of classic Jewish tales, each tied to a holiday. The first portion is devoted to the tales themselves; each story is presented on two pages, and concluded with some "Now Consider This" questions for young people to think over. The stories include the origin of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Hanukkah, and more. After each story is a gorgeous, full-color, two-page painting by Jeffrey Allon illustrating the types of events and celebration associated with the tale. A highly recommended introduction to the wonders and festive events that comprise the rich tradition of Jewish holidays.

Ten Keys for Opening the Bible
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-24
The Bible is a precious treasure. Reading it can enrich all those who open it, and in particular can nourish the faith and hope of Christians. However, reading it does pose real difficulties, relating not only to the outward form but also to basic questions. We can read the Bible fruitfully only on certain conditions. It is best to have a guide for exploring the exceptionally rich ground of the Bible; those who dispense with one risk being discouraged. The sole aim of this book is to provide a few landmarks, so that esploration can be engaged in without too much difficulty and it is possible really to encounter the heart of the biblical experience. Here are some keys, but they are worthless unless you use them to enter the building and discover its riches. So the important thing is not to read these pages: their sole aim is to make it possible to open the Bible itself, discover its flavour, and become a reader.

Overlooked history
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-03
Just as the Dust Bowl and The Great Depression wreaked havoc in the USA in the 1920's and 30's, it brought incredible hardship to Canadians as well. This book gives us short, first-hand accounts of many of those who lived through that time. The author traveled across Canada 4 times with a tape recorder collecting these first-hand accounts back in the early 1970's. The stories are just amazing. And there are hundreds of them. Stories of those who buried their pride and went on the dole. Stories of others who steadfastly refused to do so, and suffered greatly. Stories of some who left the cities and went into the Canadian wilderness and built cabins or trapped animals. Stories of those who took to the rails. Perhaps because their identities were kept private, those interviewed here were brutally honest - describing crimes they committed or abuses they had to endure. I don't know how these people did it.

One of my favorite stories in the book is that of a man who takes a young Indian wife and the two of them go to live in the woods. Against incredible odds, they do pretty well for themselves. But it ends in tragedy.

No one knew the Great Depression better than those who lived through it. I don't know why this book hasn't been more widely read. Any student of history will find it fascinating. It is an historical treasure. Highly recommended.
