Absorbing, suspenseful thriller from Nancy Baker Jacobs.
Ms. Jacobs has a knack for creating believable, "ordinary" characters
and placing them in extraordinarily dangerous situations.

More great news: Ms. Jacobs has other books due out in 2002!

Suspense readers delight!
Ms. Jacobs has done it again! Ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, and a plot which picks up speed with every page, this thriller is a joy ride for the thriller reader. If you're looking for a good read, pick up Double Trouble---you won't be able to put it down.

AT LONG LAST!!
I'll say right up front that I'm a friend of Nancy Baker Jacobs, and I haven't yet read DOUBLE OR NOTHING. I'm rating it five stars, though, in anticipation of what I know it's bound to be. I've read several of Nancy's other books, and have been waiting impatiently to receive the long-awaited DOUBLE OR NOTHING. Nancy is a great writer, and she's been gone from the mystery scene far too long. As an author myself, and a former freelance editor, I know good writing when I see it--and Nancy goes beyond good. Her books are thoughtful, intelligent, tense, fast-paced and exciting. Welcome back, Nancy! And get that promised copy of DOUBLE OR NOTHING to me--fast!!

I'm with these guys
If you are interested in Buddhist vows, this is an excellent book. Also see "Perfect Conduct."

Clear and thorough - Brilliant
This book is an absolute must for serious Buddhist students. Jamgon Kongtrul's "Shes Terzod" (of which this is a translation in part) is a classic, and this is a surprisingly easy read. The translator is thorough and careful, and graciously provided the commentary he received in the annoted section. The notes could almost be published as a separate work.

Beginning students are confused by the differences between Tantric practice and the well-known monastic tradition of Buddhism. This book puts it all together and explains in detail how both are practiced simultaneously.

The bibliography to the book alone is a treasure map of resources for new students, and no one who has received any wang or any vow in Buddhism should be without such a careful explanation of the meaning of vows as this.

For very advanced students, Jamgon Kongtrul put no sect of Buddhism above another, and studied all four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism thoroughly. Consequently this is an excellent guide for students of different schools to clearly understand philosophical commonalities & differences, breaking down biases and misunderstandings. This is especially valuable in his description of the differences between the Nyingma and Sarma, in his even-handed, thorough description of Highest Yoga Tantra, and Maha, Anu and Ati Yoga Tantra. A truly invaluable work.

excellent
This book is the most comprehensive account of how to live one's life in a Buddhist manner. END

Legend of the Five Rings: Player's Guide

The best of all systems rolled into one.
The second edition of Alderac's Legend of the Five Rings game has everything that other games strive for: it has the potential for action captured by the d20 system, the pure roleplaying potential of white wolf's storyteller system, and with more realism than both. With this system it is possible to play an entire campaign/chronicle/series/etc and never roll dice, but if the dice are used it is possible not only to do highly heroic feats, but also to slay an opponent with one stroke of the katana (however unlikely against very powerful opponents). The dice system is based on d10, and you'll never need more than 10 of them; the system is otherwise similar to shadowrun, where the face value of the rolled die is actually important. A very good system and culture to roleplay in.

A keeper
I would use this book if I were forming a new management team.

It provides an efficient, structured process for talking about real business issues over a period of weeks rather than hours. It easily be integrated into regular staff meetings or retreats. An executive or consultant could modify as needed to suit the situation.

I attended a seminar led by the author when the book first came out, and she knows her stuff.

Love and communication
Let me begin by saying that my mate and I are both well at ease with our own and each other's established love language styles. Of course it's difficult to place all the complexities of a person's "relationship style" completely within one of the five love languages cited in this book (quality time, words of affirmation, gifts, acts of service, and physical touch), but, using these five as a general guideline, my dominant love language is "physical touch", while my mate's is "acts of service". Our relationship functions reasonably well on this basis; if my mate starts moving out of her assigned love language style, as she is sometimes prone to do, I'm usually fairly quick to make sure she gets back into it.
However, despite being quite aware and mostly accepting of our respective love language styles, as recommended in this book, I sometimes suspect that this is not the full picture, and there is perhaps still something missing in our relationship in terms of communication. I'm not sure if perhaps there's something missing from my partner's copy of the book, and she's not fully grasping the issues? Her Spanish edition does seem to have fewer pages than my English copy...

A relationship saver every couple should read.
How many times have you heard a wife exclaim, "I cook and clean for that man, and he never appreciates all that I do for him. I'm so unhappy" or the husband grouse, "Hey, I bought her those diamond earrings. I even get her flowers just to show her how much I love her, and she just throws them back in my face saying that I am just trying to buy her love. She keeps carping that I never share my feelings. She just doesn't know love when she sees it."

If one partner can speak only Russian and the other only Spanish, is it any wonder that there are communication problems. What is obvious in spoken languages isn't so obvious in love languages. The problem with love language is that the one partner thinks the other is just speaking very poor Russian while the other thinks their partner's Spanish is just terrible. This book is that very important eye opener that every couple should read. It will get them on the road to speaking each others natural language.

And they should read it at the beginning of their relationship rather than as a last ditch effort to save it. I give this book as a wedding present to all my friends that get married. There is no better way to help them get a long and happy marriage started.

If You Are Married, You Have Got To Read This!
With communication being the number one factor in making relationship work, this is a must read for both spouses. Chapman hits the "nail on the head" as he uncovers the five languages of love: Quality Time, Words of Affirmation, Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch

Chapman clearly explains each language in a five chapters. Along the way, he includes experiences from real-life couples. After uncovering each language, Chapman uses the next couple of chapters to help the reader discover his or her own love language as well as the spouse's.

Whether you are newlyweds or have been married for years, this book is highly recommended above any other book on marriage. More than likely, a reader will discover they have misunderstood a mate because they were using the wrong language! I'm seeing my mate in completely different light now. :)

Fathers Aren't Supposed to Die: Five Brothers Reunite to Say Goodbye

Author: T. M. Shine
Amazon base price: $20.00
Used price: $1.10
Collectible price: $15.88

Average review score:

Poignant and compelling
This is a poignant, compelling story that those of us who are baby-boomers will soon experience ourselves, if we haven't already. Mr. Shine bears all - his personal pain, frustrations and annoyances - dealing with the inevitable death of his father and realizing the experience is bringing him close to his brothers once again and the past they share. He indicts the medical community that, he felt, treated his father as a temporary occupant of a hospital bed. Like impatient FAA air traffic controllers, nurses and doctors were unwilling to be inconvenienced by adult children who were reluctant to let the scheduled departure take off on time. A quick and fulfilling read.

Death Means Never Having to Say You're Normal
( )...The only words that miss the mark of literaryexcellenceare on the cover of T.M. Shine's remarkable tale.

Thisain't no how-to anything or a cry on Oprah's wide shoulders. This is something wonderfully other.

If Elizabeth Kubler-Ross met Carl Hiaasen, T.M. Shine would be their bastard child. This book is laugh out loud funny, except when it's ripping your guts out.

Bill Moyers sells Shine short when he alliterates in his testimonial that "Fathers . . ." is "marvelous, moving and memorable."

It is marvelous and moving. Quite so. But there are whole pages you'll hope aren't memorable, because feeling their wrenching impact once is as much as a person ought to bear.

Nice going Mr. Shine. Now please remind the folks at Amazon.com that people who read shouldn't be judged by their books' covers. END

Shared experiences, shared healing.
I bought this book shortly after the death of my own father, and the subsequent reawakening of my friendship with my sister. I found the emotions and the passions in this book to resonate very deeply within my being - helping me to heal, since I learned that my feelings are common, valid and shared.

The Way Home (Five Star First Edition Romance)

Deceptively Simple
I read "The Way Home" primarily because it is set in Palm Springs, in Southern California, a fascinating area which generates unique energies. I stayed with it because Johnson is a gentle and skilled writer...there's more than a hint of Eudora Welty in her. She writes quietly but compellingly, demanding more and more of your attention.

The characters are just as they should be...where they should be...doing what they should be doing. I wasn't bowled over by anything, just very involved with the timely and vital family problems...the kind that can test your agility and slowly break your heart. They are the kind of problems you know you'll deal with it and be the wiser for their challenges.

Johnson's characters are vital. Palpable. They linger long after the book is back on your shelf. They are people you expect to bump into in town. You'll want to ask more about the Native American lore and lifestyle of the area, about Tahquitz, about the geography. You'll want to go out with Rex to watch him work the windmills. You'll want to find out when Johnson's next work will be out.

Tugs at the heart of family dynamcis
With a rare glimpse of the non-glitzy side of Southern California living, Allison Johnson invites the reader to the sun-baked deserts of Palm Springs for an incredible journey down one woman's path of self-discovery. Using the familiar but not redundant themes of family responsiblity, career woman struggles, sibling dynamics and frankly a sit-up-and pay attention love story, Allison Johnson's use of topographical prose, humor and well-layered characters makes "The Way Home" a real page-turner.

This book is a great summer read with it's inviting and easy material, but snow birds will also find relief in the literally bone-warming descriptions of canyons, patio-side chats and cowboy guided horseback riding trips at sunset. For those struggling with the tough questions about caring for an aging parent - you will find kindred souls and heart-warming dialogue that address this growing branch on the family tree. A real achievement, and I look forward to more work by a writer who clearly understands women, the elderly and life lessons learned on the journey that take us all our own way home.

Mesmerizing first novel
The Way Home is the mesmerizing story of a woman's search for happiness and fulfillment, which she begins to realize she can achieve only by coming to terms with her difficult relationship with her alcoholic, aging father, and by letting go of her long-held belief that she can save him from himself. Ultimately she learns that forgiving someone (and one's own past behavior) takes time, but is necessary to open oneself up enough to trust and love another. Carolyn is an engaging, self-deprecating narrator with a wry sense of humor: when she looks at herself in the mirror after a trip through the heat of the desert (the evocatively described high desert of California, where windmills kick up the dust as they turn air into energy), she says, "Wilted lettuce came to mind." Johnson has written a beautiful book about a relationship between a flawed father and a daughter, and the way forgiveness and acceptance can transform one's notion of what "home" really means and what real love looks, tastes, and feels like. A lovely novel, beautifully written, suggesting great things still to come from this author.
