Political Approaches to Injury Control at the State Level

Cases in Sucessful Preventive Medicine - Injury Control
Injuries; unintentional, suicidal and homicidal; remain the leading cause of years of life lost and of disability for children, and a leading problem for the elderly in the United States.

Traumatic episodes of scald burns from hot water heaters, conflagrations and chemical poisoning associated with dropped lit cigarettes, near- and drownings around improperly gated or fenced home swimming pools, and easily available "non-safety packaged" firearms tragedies- these are examples of the thousands of annually preventable consumer product related injuries and deaths. And yet, aside from the many books on the statistics and epidemiology of injury, or on descriptive or anaytical reports with normative recommendations for action, there are few that illustrate, as does Political Approaches.. the "how to's" for successful legislation and advocacy so effective in the history of leadership in public health and medicine.

Each case study of how the " injury prevention docs " did it is followed by a complete set of useable references and by a follow-up ' informal' interview with the expert.

While this book was written almost ten years ago, the stories show the constants of historical personalities, values and events common to various historical settings of medicine and public health that make the differences for saving lives and limbs.

Dr. Berman, an early pioneer from the new generation of researchers, practitioners and educators, visions injuries as preventable, not random events nor fate, and shows the reader how to lead on the sometimes lonesome but invigorating road of prevention of injury disabilities and deaths.

A most astute book on Christianity and politics.
Glenn Tinder's The Political Meaning of Christianity is what Reinhold Niebuhr might have written fifty years after The Nature and Destiny of Man (sic). Tinder gives us an astute analyis of the human condition, individually and socially, exalted through the destiny God gives us, and fallen through the exaltation we give ourselves. His chapters on "prophetic hope" as it works for social transformation and spirituality have little rival in current literature. This book, now sadly out of print, should be required reading for all theology students, no matter the degree of their specialization or education. John W. Riggs

The importance of the Christian worldview to politics
Glen Tinder is probably best known for his seminal Atlantic article"Can We be Good Without God?". The Political Meaning of Christianityexplores many of these same ideas in greater detail, examining, for example, the importance of Love in the political system (a novel idea.) I strongly recommend this book for both Christians and non-Christians wrestling with the importance of the transcendant in our political system. Kris Childress

Political Sermons of the American Founding Era, 1730-1805

Political Sermons of the Founding Era
This is an excellence source of political sermons from the American colonial and founding era. Themes cover everything from the Biblically-ordained role of civil authorities to patriotism to the dangers of prosperity to the Sovereignty of God. Sermons feature everyone from Congregationalist Puritans to Episcopalians like James Madison. Samuel Langdon's Sermon on the Republic of the Israelites An Example is particularly intriguing and no doubt inspirational to all who heard his message. Issac Backus was a New England Baptist who also made an impassioned plea for religious liberties in 1773, echoing a theme of the founders that religion is the duty we owe are creator. John Adams once avowed are Constitution was for a religious and moral people. That virtue is a prerequisite for a Republic is often forgotten and that virtue is found in the tenets of Christianity. James Madison said it best, "We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We have staked the future of all of our political institutions upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God."

Good Primary Source
I am a student of history working on my thesis and have found this book to be very benifical to my work. This is due to the fact that all the important and or useful sermons are in the book and makes my job so much easier.

This is an excellent textbook on the British political system. It is thorough, well-organized, and engagingly written. I have used this book in teaching an undergraduate politics course and found it very effective. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in understanding British politics.

Excellent textbook on British politics
This is a very useful and highly readable work on the British political system. It's well-organized and thorough, and the author includes occasional anecdotes that hold the reader's attention. I used this book in teaching a college course on comparative politics, and the students got a lot out of it. I highly recommend it as an all-purpose work on British politics for anyone interested in the subject.

A COMPREHENSIVE AND WONDERFUL BOOK !
A fascinating look at the sometimes complicated world of Policy and politics, this book is a must read for all who wish to expand their knowledge in this area. I do not believe that a book as comprehensive or wonderful as this has ever been produced before. Dometrius and Somma are truly at the top of their field.

Great political history of the Bradley coalition
I enjoyed this analysis of LA politics, seen through the rise of minorities in LA politics, specifically the Bradley coalition. His work, about LA, is important because LA is important. The lessons that can be learned from LA's successful minority political coalition, and the lessons Sonenshein draws, can and should be used to measure the success of other big city racial politics. And I'm not just saying this because he was my professor at UCLA.

A must-read for anyone interested in racial politics
Sonenshein's dead-on analysis and clear writing make this book an essential for anyone studying politics in America. There's a reason he was given the APSA award. Not reading it is a travesty and you should be ashamed of yourself. And I'm not just saying that because he's my uncle.

The Politics of Budget Control: Congress, the Presidency and the Growth of the Administrative State
Published in Paperback by Crane Russak & Co (May, 1992)
Author: John A. Marini
Amazon base price: $32.95
Used price: $19.99

Understanding the Administrative State
In this philosophical work on budget control politics, Professor Marini explains how the executive budget provided the practical means for the implementation of the administrative state.(AKA: The Nanny State or the The Bureaucratic State.) Marini however, goes beyond other critiques of the administrative state by demonstrating that state theory is in direct opposition to and hostile towards the natural rights theory of American constitutionalism. The question Marini will force careful readers to ponder is this: If the purpose of constitutionalism is the prevention of tyranny, what is the goal of the administrative state?

A "must-have" for studing public budgeting & admin theory
Dr. Marini, a professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, explores the tensions arising from an "administrative state" within a constitutional regime of separated powers. He concludes that "the federal budget has come to be the principal instrument of politics in the American administrative state" (Preface, p. xii). This book should be included in the core required readings for the study and understanding of public budgeting, administrative theory and administrative bureaucracy.

The Politics of Caspian Oil
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (April, 2001)
Author: Bulent Gokay
Amazon base price: $69.95
Collectible price: $44.99
Average review score:

Oil and Geopolitics
This book investigates the politics, global political-economy stakes in the Caspian Sea region. The book is a collection of articles to inform the reader about the significance of this trans-national resource which has the potential to change the economic, political and social ventures in central Eurasia. The book tracks the roots and development of the recent global interest in the Caspian Sea oil and pipelines. At the beginning of the new millennium Caspian energy resources have assumed increased geopolitical importance. Once fully exported to world markets, flows of large volumes of Caspian oil through non-OPEC lands may erode the power of OPEC, and therefore politically and militarily supported by the only super power of this century- the USA. This is an excellent survey of the geo-politics of the Caspian oil, painstakingly researched, tightly structured, and elegantly presented.

geo-economics
At the end of the Cold War, Eurasia emerged as the world's axial supercontinent. The lure of enormous reserves in the Caspian Sea region has made the region the focus of fierce competition between multinationals and the powerful states. This book is about this important geo-economic struggle and provides an essential background to understand the recent conflict in the region, from Afghanistan to Iraq. This is the context in which one should be talking about emerging forms of political and economic control, military control and a forceful push for the US-led globalisation. This book is an essential reading on this increasingly important topic.

Better understand "Food Wars" between the USA and Europe
This engaging and colorful account of the history of U.S. food regulation provides excellent perspective for better understanding the recent spate of high-profile, food regulation trade disputes between the U.S.and Europe, and within Europe, such as the "Banana Wars", "British Beef", and "Genetically modified corn" incidents. A must-read for anyone who who has interest in the unique nature and psychology of government actions in dealing with issues around "our daily bread". This book appears to have been subjected to a very rigorous "peer review" and I expect it will become a classic reference work.

a positive review of an excellent book
a brillant, insightful exposition of a fascinating subject -- a must read for historians and all persons interested in government regulation.

Politics of the Mass Media :
Published in Paperback by Wadsworth Publishing (1994)
Author: Calvin F. Exoo
Amazon base price: $41.95
Used price: $8.37
Average review score:

An well wrought Post-Gramscian perspective on U.S. Media.
I found Exoo's work to be a tremendously helpful resource for my own research, as well as a general and well documented argument examining the ways that the American media has failed the American public and their democratic ideals. The work spans a range of material, from Gulf War news coverage (much of that chapter seems eerily prescient after 9/11) to the ideological subtexts of big budget Hollywood. Historical arguments, political theory, and common sense reign supreme in this logical didactic that C. F. Exoo has assembled. I highly reccomend the book for anyone interested in being an educated consumer of Mass Media. Not only is this book useful for scholars, it provides an extremely useful lens with which to view American Media products. Journalists, scholars, students of any level, and even the everyday T.V. watcher would greatly benefit from the reading of Exoo's well-wrought polemic.

Who does this guy think he is, Marx?
I have two suggestions for Mr. Exoo: 1. sit. 2. spin.
This book is a phenomenal piece of garbage. Calvin Exoo uses the entire thing as a totally off the wall rant about how American Media is somehow under the control of corporations. That's ridiculous. Just because new outlets are controlled by huge mega corporations doesn't mean they'll do what's bad for the common good. I mean look George Bush, he had a lot of stock in all kinds of kooky things and took huge campaign contributions from nearly every shady source he could, but he still found the gumption and wherewithal to do a lot of coke at wild white boy parties all through college! Is that the kind of thing Enron endorses? I think not! Exoo, stop whining about the media! I know for a fact you watch and love "Walker: Texas Ranger." I'm gunning for you Exoo. Watch it...
