Armstrong sees a system flailing in the wind
The Disaster of Foster Care in the USArmstrong details nothing less than an evil conspiracy. Federal mechanisms for funding, the courts and state bureaucrats have conspired to make the public believe that the nation's most tragic victims - abused children - are in good hands. Then the three branches of government then play the parts of those legendary monkeys - see no evil, speak no evil and hear no evil.
The concerned volunteer or interested citizen will be appalled at the stories Armstrong tells. They are heartbreaking stories that ring all too true for those of us who have worked or volunteered in the child welfare field. Those who are looking for an easy scapegoat, however, will be disappointed. The child welfare system in this nation is accountable to no one, and even though some of our nation's heroes work here every day, many - perhaps most - of the children are poorly served, even harmed.
Here is a system where no one keeps account of the most basic data - how many children, how many placements made, etc. - where secrets are every where and those in charge seem somehow unwilling or unable to make the changes necessary. Here the poorest women have their children taken away by a system seemingly without either a heart or a mind. For there is no caring and no logic to the punishment of both mother and child whose crimes are simply being born poor in the world's richest nation.
This isn't a book of answers, but it asks all the right questions. Read it, and then give it to a legislator.

An inherently fascinating biography
More Insight from Smith ¿ an eminent authority on the mobTalk about "insider" information! Smith has long been quoted as a preeminent authority on mob history and "wise guy" relationships. In his book, "Of Rats and Men: Oscar Goodman's Life from Mob Mouthpiece to Mayor of Las Vegas," Smith names a Who's Who of notorious clients, alleged criminal activities, and egregious political innuendoes surrounding the controversial bonds between Goodman and friends. Scared me! While it is obvious the attention-seeking mayor was generous in his interviews with the author, Smith kept me up nights as he interpreted what Goodman would have us believe with his [author's] own extensive background knowledge and investigative prowess. John L. has balls of brass to write as honestly as he does.
Don't let an easy read fool you. This book is a gem for all who follow gaming history, or the Las Vegas / mob connection - to say nothing of government ineptitude (now, that was a hoot!).

A Case Study of Land-Use Planning in British ColumbiaThe book seeks to identify the amount of land, the location of this land, its specific type and the rate at which its use has changed from the period 1958-1981 within the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada. Within this context the book further seeks to see how these changes have affected the fruitland base of the Okanagan, and in turn to document the federal governments role in these transformations. Of further interest, it seeks to see how major initiatives such as the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) how impacted on the use of land within the Valley.
I personally found this book to be very excellent study of the issues that are set out in the introduction. It does a comprehensive job at looking at how these federal and provincial programs have helped to slowly change the economic base of the Valley away from a primarily agricultural mode of production to a more diversified industrial one. The merits of this are, of course, debatable, bringing into question the continued relevance of even the ALR itself as the Valley has become a haven for retirees and a burgeoning high tech sector.
All in all this is an excellent study of the land-use trends within the Okanagan and is a most read for anybody interested in the evolution of land-use planning in British Columbia. My only concern would be the availability of this book. Good luck in trying to get a copy.
WOW, Amazon really has everything! This study seeks to look at changes in fruitlands between 1958 (which was the year that the McPhee Report was released) and 1981. Of course, one of the major developments of this era was the introduction of the Agricultural Land Reserve by the Provincial government in 1973. This work makes the assertion that this has led to a reduction in the number of orchards being converted over to urban uses. Yet, it fails I believe to adequately address how the Land Reserve affected the fruit industry in other ways (but that was not really the mandate of the study).
Regardless, this is an excellent, albeit specific source, on land-use changes in British Columbia.
