Tackles issues which most Lebanese don't like to discuss
Hilal Khashan, Lebanon's leading pollster, has written a cogent book that provided me with deep theoretical and methodological insights during the preparation of my Ph.D. thesis. In fact, many researchers on education employing the content analysis approach to confessional pluralism in Lebanon find this impressive empirical work useful to uncover the complex set of aggregated political factors which are pronounced and perhaps reproduced in this country's educational policies and practices. Judged by the sheer mass of new data and complex analysis which Professor Khashan provides, this book represents a major contribution to the understanding of the subtle and complex nature of the confessional conflict in Lebanon. This monograph has a twofold objective; first, it reviews some interesting methodological issues; and second, it presents the cornucopia of original findings reported by the author. The title of the book signifies a relatively new approach to research on the roots of the corrosive confessional conflict in Lebanon. This approach incorporates a range of theoretical perspectives and original quantitative-qualitative research techniques.... Khashan's work transcends all other works on Lebanon by the quality and comprehensiveness of his data, as well as the sophisticated statistical techniques which he expertly utilizes. This is a truly an unsurpassed book on Lebanese society. It tackles without apology difficult issues which most Lebanese do not like to discuss or even admit. ...Khashan's incorporation of regression analysis filled much of the gap caused by the paucity of empirical data on Lebanon's political viability. Shortage of statistics as those generated by the author in the past tended to stymie research on politics in Lebanon. In this book Khashan has addressed the political arena of Lebanon from a wholly new perspective for which he must be commended. Any observer of post-Tai'f Lebanese politics will readily endorse the author's conclusions and approve of his recommendations. This work shall continue to guide scholars surfeited of research in their own field into provocative horizons. Kamal E. Abouchedid, PhD., Center for Ethnic Studies in Education, The University of Manchester, UK.

A compelling study of the Lebanese confessional mind-frame!
With this, his name-making book, Hilal Khashan offers insightful analysis of the Lebanese predicament as manifested by the Lebanese themselves. He is to be commended for his courageous and path-breaking study. Professor Khashan has done what no other specialist on Lebanon has dared or could articulate before -- he has the presented the bitter facts as they are. This is one of the very few books on Lebanon that will guide us to a better understanding of Lebanese politics in the next millenium and beyond!

Tons of anecdotes and accesible
Even if you don't vote, hate wrestling and couldn't care less if Minnesota was part of the United States or not, you'd probably dig this book. It's an engaging read, following Ventura's phenomenal capture of the highest political office in his state from BEFORE day one, and it's filled with anecdotes, lively characters and flashes of endearing humanity. Entertaining enough for even conspiracy theorists. If Ventura didn't exist, the media would have to invent him, he's so engaging, which makes the book soar.

Great Great Great
Tom, I hope you keep track of these things! Thought the book was interesting.

Ring of truth
I recently paid a brief (one week) visit to Havana for the first time.My first view of socialism was a grim one. Little old ladies lining up for one roll of bread with a ration book. The poor sections of Havana looked grim, everywhere like a fortress as people disappear behind their solares. And then the better off parts like the Hotel Nacional where tourists congregate. Back home, searching for literature on Cuba, I found this book, Insider. It rings of truth, of authenticity, and gives the reader a sharp sense of Cuba under Castro. Kafkaesque, reminding of Marques and Orwell, it shows what can happen to a people under the power of a man who knows how to subject his citizens to his will. The Committees for the defence of the revolution, the way in which everyone spies on everyone else, the destruction of the economy in the name of revolution - are all frightening views of what can happen under totalitarianism. Is this where George Bush is taking America with his call for citizens to spy on each other? is it that far fetched to see totalitarianism underneath the veneer of Capitalist democracy?Someone should investigate how much Santeria (the local religion espoused by Celia Sanchez, Fidel's late companion)influenced Castro! This book has helped me to understand some of the glimpses I had of Cuban society as I interacted with Cubans in Havana. Castro is revealed as never before. As a Caribbean person generally sympathetic to the plight of the Cuban people, I thank Menendez for giving me a more realistic picture of his homeland. I recommend this book highly. It should be in print again.Edith Grossman, translator of Marques and Mutis, has effected a professional and creative moving of this fascinating story into English. Muy Bien.

Insight into the Revolution
This book provides a first hand look into Cuban reality before and after Fidel came to power. Written from the prospective of someone who participated in the fight against Batista as a student, undertook self-exile and subsequently returned to Cuba to face situations he would have never imagined, the reader gets a glimpse into what life was really like in Cuba in the 1950's through the early 80's. The author provides details about the early years of Revolution, as well as information on his encounters with members of Castro's government. He provides reports of his personal conversations with Che Guevara, and reveals Che "the man" and not Che "the icon". The author's tracing of his path through different Cuban government entities during the 1970's and early 80's in order to survive and eventually get out of Cuba, shows his determination and ability to face the the problems, constant uncertainty and paranoia in Cuban society. Due to his student activist history and various government jobs, the author is in a position to furnish invaluable analysis into the persona of Fidel Castro and the Castro regime. This book provides a realistic window into the Revolution and to what the Castro regime has meant to Cuba.

A lucid and brilliantly presented study. A "must read."
Daniel Cole's path-breaking study of the myths and realities of environmental regula tion in Poland is "must-reading" for anyone concerned with how the former communi st countries can become modern democracies. At last, From Red To Green provides the West w ith a clear-eyed and definitive exposition of falacy of environmental protection during the communist era and the efforts to achieve genuine reform in Poland's post-Soviet political life. Cole masterfully synthesizes the historical, political, socio-economic factors impac ting on environmental policy in Poland's past, providing a base to assess environmental pro tection today. Cole has established himself as one of the most penetrating analysts of adm inistrative law in the former Soviet bloc, and here he harnesses his strengths to produce a provocative analysis of a country which has probably engaged reform and modernization more aggressively than any other former sattelite state. For those involved in research on poli cy in the post-communist world, From Red To Green offers a pragmatic and compelling vision. For those in charge of environmental policy-making in the region, it is required reading.

Mark Brzezinski, Hogan & Hartson LLP, Washington, DC

Excellent analysis of Polish environmental law.
INSTITUTING ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION is excellent. Of the handful of good studies of the environmental degradation inflicted on Central European countries under communism, Cole's book is one of the best. What sets it apart from other examinations of environmental problems is its focus on the legal rationalities and irrationalities of "real socialism" in Poland. This is a topic much neglected by social scientists and economists, who tend to assume that communism was, if not exactly law-less, at least a social order in which the law mattered much less than dozens of other factors. Cole's book has convinced me that socialist law is a necessary and important variable to be considered, that the law in communist Poland was deeply intertwined with the other political, social, ideological, and economic variables to which most analysts devote their attention.

It is one of the finest in-depth case study I have encountered of the problems of establishing the rule of law during the last years of a communist regime trying to implement reforms and during the more fundamental transition from communism to democratic government and a market economy. It will stand as a model for any future studies of such non-environmental topics as communist and post-communist labor law, property reform, and so on.

Quite apart from its status as legal analysis, this is a superb study of the relation between politics, economics, social interests, and ideology. Its audience will extend far beyond legal scholars. In fact, this book should have an impact on such disciplines as Environmental Studies, Political Science, Economics, History, and Sociology. Needless to say, this is more than most legal texts achieve.

This book is as thoroughly researched as any I have read on the topic. Hardly a source is left untouched. At the same time, never is there a hint of the problem afflicting all too many academic studies, the needless compiling of bibliographic references for the sake of displaying the references. Cole has obviously read everything that is worth reading (and more!), and integrates this material into a coherent whole.

A wonderful tool
I devoured this book last night after it arrived.

Well written. Concise. Extraordinarily useful.

Some information surprised me. Some was very reassuring and justified decisions that I had just made. There were a few points that saved me from making stupid and costly mistakes that I had been contemplating.

The author was David vs Goliath, using an inexpensive website to rally support and slay city (Newport Beach) and county (Orange) governments that spent tens of millions. The internet was his sling. Information was his stone.

If you are using, or contemplating using a website to fight City Hall, you need to buy this book.

It gave me hope
I loved this book. Clear and interestingly written how-to-do-it guide. Lot's of real-world examples of what can be accomplished.

Internet for Activists sends a great message that "You can beat City Hall." It gave me the tools and encouragement to start making some needed changes around this town.

My highschool son got a lift out of the possibilities for ordinary citizens to be able to make it a better world.

The Invented Indian: Cultural Fictions and Government Policies

Mythical Indians Who Never Were.
"The Invented Indian" is a brilliant dissection of the myths that have been so widely circulated by Indians and their apologists. Trading on their supposed past victimization, Indians--like other minorities--have used the power of guilt and smear to gain socio/political and economic spoils from brow-beaten whites. Veteran anthropologist James Clifton is to be congratulated for bravely stepping aside the unwritten rules on how to talk about minorities in general, and Indians in particular by exposing these myths.

interesting collection of essays
I read this book for a paper I had to write about Native Americans. It is an interesting collection of diverse essays dealing with the American Indians. Although I cannot say that each essay was equally interesting (I am not a lawyer), I can say that everyone writing or thinking about Native Americans in the nineties should include this book in his reading-list.

A Hero to Remember
In the month of December of the year 1994, there was a 12yr old boy honored as a hero. Iqbal Masih had been a child slave in a Pakastani carpet factory. Five months later Masih had been murdered in his own homeland. Though his life was taken, his actions live on as he inspired middle school students world-wide and adults to help free and educate the child laborers. This is a powerful story of a courageous boys life and death. Masih was a remarkable boy who lived a very full, inspirational life in a tragically short life spand of only twelve years.

Iqbal Masih and the Crusaders Against Child Slavery
The story of Iqbal changed my perception of a child's place in the world. Who would have thought a four-year-old could be sold for approximately twelve dollars and forced to work in a rug factory? Who could imagine that a twelve-year-old Iqbal could speak for the rights of children in Pakistan?

This book made me angry and it made me cry. Susan Kuklin describes the lives of poor Pakistani families who are forced to sell their children into a life of bondage. This compelling piece of creative non-fiction is aimed at the middle school market, but the story is universal, and the black and white photos allow the reader into a world that is not an urban tale--but all too real. A must read for anyone that is interested in the future of the world's children.

I'm a media specialist at BelleVue Middle School in Florida. A small group of students and I read this book together. My students were shocked that many villages in Pakistan are too poor to have schools. They compared younger brothers and sisters to Iqbal in the factory. They learned a great deal about mobility and what it would be like to not have it. This book has a helpful index and glossary of terms as well as descriptive side-bars that make research easy.

The Iron Lady: A Biography of Margaret Thatcher
Published in Hardcover by Farrar Straus & Giroux (November, 1989)
Author: Hugo Young

Great Biography
There have been few women throughout history whose impact has been so great that they have caused an era to carry their name. In the case of Queen Elizabeth I, the Elizabethian Age was followed several hundred years later by the Victorian Age of Queen Victoria, only to give way in time to Margaret Thatcher and "Thatcherism."

Margaret Thatcher was truly a unique politician--not simply for the fact that she became the first female to head a western democracy, but because she was truly skilled and resolved in the art of politics.

Margaret Thatcher was born into politics. The child of an alderman, she served under Harold Macmillan and in the government of Edward Heath.

Her view of government and her rise to power mirrored, in many ways, the acension of Ronald Reagan in the United States. And, indeed, theirs is considered on the of the closest political alliances in history. Her view of smaller government, whatever the readers point of view, clicked with what England needed after years of shifting towards a socialist system. She was keen on privatization and lowering taxes. Something, that although cases could be made either way, certainly worked for her in 1980's Great Britian.

The book also points out her outspoken opposition to communism, thus earning her the title "iron lady." Young takes care to highlight her brilliance as a visionary, her willingness to restore British pride by refusing to give up the Falkands, and her resolve in not giving one inch of ground in her belief that the democratic, free enterprise system was superior.

This is truly a great book for all who are interested in the end of the Cold War and for those who wish to study the conservative "revolution" that struck the West in the 1980's.

The best biography of Mrs Thatcher
For Anglophiles and serious students of modern British politics and economics, this is almost surely the best full-length biography of Margaret Thatcher that has been written thus far. Young concisely summarises the major events in Thatcher's career and provides sharp analyses of her personality and policies (eg, the effect on her of her class background, her closeness to Britain's Jewish community, etc). One wishes that he had written more about the economy, but since Young (who recently died) was a political journalist, his focus is understandably on politics. Especially good are the thumbnail sketches of the other major figures of Thatcherism -- Norman Tebbit, Nigel Lawson, Lord Young, etc.

The Iron Road is Well Worth Traveling!
I first heard of James Mawdsley when he was interviewed on the program Worldview on NPR.Even though I had only read one book in the last year and a half previous to hearing the NPR interview, the experiences he recounted and the ways in which he handled them touched me so much I wrote down the name of his book and put in my first order to Amazon.com. I bought this book bracing myself for a hard, serious read (I had never voulunarily ventured into the realm of non-fiction before.) This book captured my attention from the first paragraph and proved to be the furthest thing from a "hard read" - I couldn't put it down! It was: touching, enlightening, sad, inspirational, but most of all unexpectedly FUNNY at times (thanks to James's often self-depricating sense of humor and his evolving "what matters most" outlook on life.) I can not recommend this book enough! It has turned me into a lover of non-fiction and more importantly it has made me aware of human rights abuses that are going on in Burma right now!

taut and well written autobiography
In 1988 though her democratic political party won the national elections in a romp, the military refused to let go of power and instead placed Daw Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest, killed many of her supporters, and drove others into exile. When British citizen James Mawdsley learned about the incarceration of the Burmese Nobel Laureate, he became outraged. Mawdsley became a one-man band staging protests and distributing antigovernment paraphernalia and is finally arrested and sentenced for seventeen years for various crimes that will shock western sensitivities to learn the felonis he committed.

Mr. Mawdsley tells his story on why he chose an activist path to shake up more then just the Burmese government, but to wake up the western democracies. Most readers will have dual feelings about the author, as his fanatic behavior seems suicidal yet courageous making him a fascinating character. The autobiography is taut and well written, gripping the audience from start to finish and deserves a large readership as the lesson learned is don't sit passively by whining, take action even small steps matter.

An indispensible book for a student of party politics

Gordon K. Durnil is uniquely qualified to write such a book as this. He is the author of "The Making of a Conservative Environmentalist" (Indiana University Press, 1995). He has been an Indiana conservative Republican leader for decades, and for thirty years was campaign manager for Republican presidential candidates. He was the 1961 founder of Young Americans for Freedom.

President George Bush appointed him as the United States Chairman of the International Joint Commission. His holistic views of societal problems combine the need for a return to traditional values, while exposing the disingenuous nature of government from the viewpoint of a senior executive level official.

He is exceptionally well qualified to write this expose, which looks at the "if it feels good do it" philosophy of the '60s and '70s, and the resulting societal ills that affect us today. The flawed children of today whose parents were the flower-children of those days.

It is a good book. You might benefit by reading it.
