A welcome antidote to the usual drumbeat of media criticism
Government's Greatest Achievements: From Civil Rights To Homeland Security by Paul C. Light (Douglas Dillon Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution) is an informed history and celebration showcasing twenty-five of the American government's policy successes from 1944 to 1999. Documenting and highlighting the eradication of polio, the rebuilding of Europe after World War II, the strides made forward against racial discrimination, the reduction of poverty among the elderly, expanding the right to vote, and much, much more, Government's Greatest Achievements is an extraordinary, uplifting read which offers striking and sometimes even surprising facts. A very strongly recommended addition to both academic and community library Political Science and American History collections, Government's Greatest Achievements is a welcome antidote to the usual drumbeat of media criticism and endemic public skepticism.

Thought provoking and well researched
A breath-taking study of the effect of stereotypeson the Anglo mindset of Latino/as.Thank you very much. I am
focusing a law review article on the effect of humor, parody and satire as told by Latino comedians on the proliferation of negative Latino stereotypes.

Your work was extremely helpful in putting the entire project and process into perspective. An outstanding academic study of a very serious subject. Both thought provoking and well researched

A timely, enlightening, important book
I have already read this book and I highly recommend it. This is an incredibly important book in this era when Latinas/os in general and Mexican-Americans and Mexican immigrants in particular are portrayed as an invading underclass that threatens the mythological "homogeneous" American society.

Bender debunks this mythology by pointing out that Latinas/os have been in what is today the United States from the earliest moments of the republic, and by presenting a well-researched and through portrayal of the misrepresentation of Latinas/os in American mass-media popular culture. He also identifies the long multicultural history of the United States, and how Latinas/os belong in and positively contribute to this varied cultural mosaic. His careful, thorough and occasionally painful analysis of the stereotypes about Latinas/os that are prevalent in American popular culture are important reminders that the struggle for equality is an ongoing process.

As Berta Esperanza Hernandez-Truyol, a colleague of mine at the University of Florida, wrote in a review of this book: "(Bender) proposes a multi-dimensional attack on the propagation of stereotypes by using law and litigation, voluntary industry standards and hiring practices, counter speech, and community-based protest as its tools...He beautifully and lovingly juxtaposes the ever-important familia as a countervailing force to the negative stereotyping propounded by the media ..." Bender uses the counter-narrative of his strong Mexican-American family upbringing to illustrate the importance of engaging negative stereotypes with positive personal and community examples.

Although he is a fellow law professor, Bender has avoided unnecessary jargon to write an eminently accessible book that will make powerful and enlightening reading for any well-educated person.

Gun Control and the Constitution: Sources and Explorations on the Second Amendment
Published in Paperback by Garland Publishing (June, 1994)
Author: Robert J. Cottrol
Amazon base price: $39.95
Used price: $7.88
Average review score:

An extremely useful collection of documents.
Professor Cottrol's book is an extremely useful collection of original documents: cases, statutes, law review articles and so on. The scholarship is meticulous, and the presentation is balanced. His lengthy introduction is practically worth the price of the book itself: an extended monograph on constitutional interpretation that rivals many of the law review articles he reproduces in both length and analysis.

Excellent collection of legal cases and scholarship
The best one-volume source about the legal history of the Second Amendment. This paperback is a distillation of the most important items from Cottrol's three-volume hardback series on the same topic. Included in the paperback version are the two leading Supreme Court cases on the Second Amendment (Presser v. Illinois and United States v. Miller) and one of the most important state court cases (the 19th-century Tennessee decision, Aymette v. State). The full text of the Brady Act and the 1986 Firearms Owners Protection Act are included. But the most useful parts of the book are the reprints of ten major law or history journal articles about the Second Amendment. Topics covered include the English background of the Second Amendment, the original intent of the Second Amendment, and the Second Amendment in the context of citizenship and civic responsibility.Because Cottrol has made the book scrupulously balanced, four of the ten articles represent the gun prohibitionists' viewpoint that the Second Amendment guarantees essentially no right that an individual American could exercise. This anti-rights view represents far less than 40% of the serious scholarship about the Second Amendment, and thus the Cottrol book may create the mistaken impression that the anti-rights scholars are a more significant element of the scholarly community than they really are. The book's careful balance, however, makes it an ideal item for a school library. Cottrol's opening essay is as good an introduction to the meaning of the Second Amendment as you'll find anywhere. Balanced Look at the Presidency of LBJ
While considering this book I found a book review by American Studies Today Online, so I have posted it at the bottom of this review. I thought it was appropriate.

"Book Review: Guns or Butter: the Presidency of Lyndon Johnson by Irving Bernstein.

"Warfare, rioting, assassinations: mayhem continues to be the dominant image of America in the mid-1960s, with Lyndon Johnson presiding. This book is intended to redress an 'unfair balance' in the treatment of the man and his time in office, which has skewed our perception almost exclusively to what went wrong.

"The tragedy of Lyndon Johnson's presidency, according to the author of this new political biography, was that Johnson believed that he could have both guns and butter - that his vision of the United States as a 'great society' could be fulfilled alongside the waging of war in southeast Asia. It was to be a tragedy of epic proportions.

"In the aftermath of Kennedy's assassination in November 1963, and especially after the Democrats' landslide victory in the presidential election a year later, Johnson set about the task of continuing and extending his predecessor's liberal reform programme. Legislative achievements included the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, Medicare, and a series of progressive measures relating to immigration, education and conservation. Together they constituted a new 'New Deal': FDR was LBJ's political hero.

"With rapid economic growth in the mid-1960s, the Democrats could have looked forward to a lengthy stay in office during which Johnson's vision of the 'great society' might have been made still more a reality. But his decision to engage US military forces in the long-running conflict in Vietnam changed everything.

"Bernstein has produced a very readable narrative of the domestic triumphs and foreign travails of the Johnson administration, richly documented from the archives of the LBJ presidential library in Austin, Texas. His book gives fascinating insights into the American political process, and into Johnson's complex personality.

"Despite the author' s hope to rehabilitate LBJ's reputation by focussing on the domestic accomplishments, it is the descent into the quagmire of Vietnam that comes to dominate his account. The style of writing is often vivid, sometimes colloquial, always lucid. There are useful historical backgrounds given to all the issues under discussion, and brief biographical sketches of the principal policy-makers in the Johnson administration. The book is generously illustrated, and is a storehouse of material from which teachers and students can draw readily for a better understanding of those dramatic years of American hope and despair, dream and nightmare, over which LBJ presided."

American Studies Today Online

A overdue look at what went right with LBJ's presidency.
I've read this book twice and each time my admiration grows. Bernstein has written a book that accurately assesses what went right with Johnson's presidency. Johnson, on domestic policy, rivaled FDR in brilliance. Although Bernstein's goal is to show us the "forgotten" LBJ, he doesn't shrink from showing us how badly he failed when it came to the Vietnam War. This book contained lots of information but it never got bogged down in the details.

If you want to know more about God's Providence, THIS IS IT.
The story of Joseph is well known. What is not well understood is how God was directing Joseph in every circumstance of his life. The way Alistair presents the story of Joseph, will let you see in your own life how God is also in control of ALL of your life's circumstances too.

You will see your life and your future from a more relax perspective once you realize and understand that God is in control making the decisions that are best suited for you. I truly recommend this book for anyone interested in finding God's providence in his/her life.

We Just THINK We Have Problems
To be honest, when our assistant pastor announced that our study group was going to use this book, I didn't think that the book had much to offer me. I was VERY wrong! Alistair Begg does a wonderful job of telling the story of Joseph, Jacob's favorite son. (Anyone thinking that today's families are all mixed up should see how Jacob's family beats anything we hear about in our day.) Many of us have been through hard times, but I doubt any of us have experienced the hardships that Joseph dealt with. Every chapter is full of lessons for our lives, no matter what problems we are struggling with. Begg's writing is clear and easy to read, yet very convicting. Highly recommended!

Fantastic source of information for productivity management

This book contains about 100 texts written by different people, with different profiles and recognized knowledge, experience and contributions in productivity management, like Peter Drucker, J. M. Juran, Jay Forrester, A. V. Feigenbaum, etc. The editors were able to put together a lot of information in a coherent way, that is easy and pleasant to consult and read.

The topics covered include the importance of productivity measurement and management, basic concepts, specific methods for different sectors (manufacturing, service, staff, profit centers, government, nonprofit), feedback and information system, sustainability and employee involvement.

Handbooks are often boring and unpleasant to read. This is an exception, with short texts and good graphic presentation. Of course this means that most information has an introductory charater, but many references are given to direct the reader to deeper studies.

I have used this handbook for some time before I decided to write this, and my objective is to share with others the satisfaction I have obtained from this excellent reference

An excellent productivity guide
There are no words to describe this book!!!. It covers every aspect regarding productivity improvement. It has lots of articles written by various professionals, and it explains in a simple way how to improve productivity, whatever it is services, production, etc. A must have for engineers!!!

The best in the whole series
This is by far the best in all of the Harry Potter book series. Brilliantly written- Harry shows us a depth of analytical thinking not evident in the other adventures. It seems as if this boy wizard has actually grown into a man wizard to write this book, full of theological and philosophical insight. I think his collaborations with "J.K. Rowling" do not hit the same mark of quality and expression as his solo-writing efforts. A must read for all Harry Potter fans!

:-) haha

Potty book from Potter
I must say this is much more interesting than his childhood memories which are Ghostwritten by J.K Rowling, in this book we get to read about Evil Englishmen who get there Just Deserts and how the good old English Religion absolutely justifies the removal of these cretins from the face of the earth, it's a kind of book best enjoyed while sipping some good old Fortnum & Mason tea, nipping at some scrumtious scones with strawberries and clotted cream and listening to Elgar.

Of course Potter is a genius and the works descriping his Magic school years are quite exellent but this work is of such excelence that it must not be overlooked, so do take me and my review seriously and read this Gem.

A well documented biography
Hemingway in Michigan gave me the background about Nick Adam's and the early years that made me reread Hemingway from a different point of view.
If anyone is interested in Hemingway, the emerging writer, this is the book to read. Not only is it a well documented biography, but it places Hemingway in the region of northern Michigan he loved and wrote about.

The "real" Hemingway
This biography captures the "real Ernest Hemingway" when he lived in northern Michigan. Since I visited Petoskey, Michigan, I know the places that the author writes about. I reread Hemingway's short stories about Nick Adams and found out how close to the truth he was. When you take this book, Hemingway in Michigan, and go to the sites described in it, you feel as as if you have lived the fiction of the early Ernest Hemingway.

A Fundamental Reading...
... for anyone interested in an extremely rich and contradictory social environment such as Italy after WWII. It is a complete, clear, and deeply intriguing work that I strongly recommend.

An in-depth survey of Italy's social and political dynamics
A History Of Contemporary Italy: Society And Politics 1943-1988 by Paul Ginsborg (Professor of Contemporary European History, University of Florence) is an in-depth survey of Italy's social and political dynamics that saw it evolve from a war-torn and poverty-stricken, primarily agrarian country, into a prosperous, politically stable member of the European community. Here ably and accessibly recounted are the events, personalities, and reforms that were critical to eventually overcoming endemic and persistence corruptions, shortages, and obstacles necessary before the tremendous achievements of contemporary Italy and its eventual entrance into the European Union. A History Of Contemporary Italy: Society And Politics 1943-1988 is a scholarly, meticulous history and a welcome and recommended contribution to European International Studies and 20th Century Italian History reference collections and reading lists.
