Dynamite
"This is an exhilarating book, full of spirit and spark. It vividly and
passionately describes the author's groundbreaking, bureaucracy-busting work
as head of the National Performance Review. Ignited by Tom Peter's In Search
of Excellence,
Stone became Al Gore's right hand in working to reinvent government. His
book is filled with wonderful stories of revolutionaries from every rank and
level. It contains many great tidbits of advice and wisdom. The author used
to refer to himself as Energizer in Chief. His book is just that: an
energizer. It breathes the soul of civic revolution. It is full of fun as
well, an easy read. Stone is totally devoted to action that breaks down
ridiculous and often absurd barriers from getting the job done right. But
the book is full of humanity as well, as when Stone decides to retire so he
can live closer to his young grandchildren. If you want to touch clear,
decisive, humane leadership, if your soul needs a spark to re-ignite itself,
run -don't walk- to get this book."

Civility Is Not Dead
This tell-it-like-it-was gem about the author's thirty years of public service is nothing less than remarkable. Adroitly written with good humor, Stone's quiet, but dogged steadfast nature is wonderfully evident in every page and makes you count your lucky stars that people like him actually join the ranks of our government. These experiences should serve as a guide for future generations of civil servants tackling the often thankless and misunderstood job of government service. But more than that - there is a lesson plan for all of us who navigate the treacherous waters of small and big organizations alike. I for one, plan to give this book to my twenty-one-year-old college graduate to read.

Mr. Rowan has never shied away from tackling the tough issues of our time and in this study, he is insightful and provoking. His mastery over complex subjects is impressive and I hope that we will be able to explore more of Mr. Rowan's work in the future.

Conflicts of Rights: Moral Theory and Social Policy Implicat
This text is written not for the layman, which is disappointing as Mr. Rowan draws our attention to significant points about which those who make public policy decisions should take note. For those with a background or a serious interest in the moral questions concerning some of our most controversial contemporary social issues, I strongly recommend this book.

A Fair Analysis: Nicol C. Rae's Conservative Reformers
Rae's Conservative Reformers does a wonderful job of taking an objective look at the 104th Congress and the Republican Freshmen involved. Not only does Rae look at this one Congress, but at one hundred years of Congress and their decline in power that made a reform group necessary. Rae does an excellent job of analyzing the budget crisis of 1995-1996 and what implications this had among the freshmen in Congress. For anyone interested in politics, this book is a "must read."

Excellent, Insightful, Enjoyable
A comprehensive and scholarly treatment of the new majority has been long awaited. To the citizen desiring political knowledge, as well as to the academic, Conservative Reformers provides the most thorough discussion of the freshmen, their political motivations, and the institutional constraints they faced. Additionally, Rae weaves his observations, data, and interviews into a solid theoretical framework that beckons the philosophical. Particularly useful were the initial chapters, which provide an historical overview of the themes addressed throughout. For example, the author demonstrates that public disaffection with Congress is not a new addition to the political landscape in the U.S. Most humorous are the pages addressing the rise of the Republican candidates in the 1980's, as one can only imagine such antics in Congress. Finally, the chapter on the budget impasse was by far the most entertaining and engaging consideration of the topic that I have yet to see. Long after the Republican takeover ceases to be a current event, Conservative Reformers will continue to interest readers due to its analytical and theoretical richness.

Considerations on France
Published in Textbook Binding by Univ of Toronto Pr (June, 1974)
Author: Joseph De Maistre
Amazon base price: $39.95
Used price: $20.00
Average review score:

A Critique of Modernity.
Joseph de Maistre is one of the harshest counter-revolutionary critics of the French Revolution. He calls for a return to traditional Catholicism and the Restoration of the monarchy. The book _Considerations on France_ takes a look at his arguments for that tradition and his understanding of the dark side of human existence through his unique Christian perspective. De Maistre was both a Freemason and a Roman Catholic, an arch-conservative traditionalist, and a strong believer in the primacy of papal authority in the secular and spiritual realms. In this book, he criticizes those eighteenth century philosophers and their belief in progress and the "social contract" ideal. He explains why the traditional development of society is more appropriate, given the rootedness of man in sin. This is an important work to understand the thought of De Maistre, a Catholic reactionary.

Another vision of the French Revolution.
This book may be helpful for every person interested in the French Revolution. It shows a "reactionary" vision of the Revolution, and describes all the human right violations done by the revolutionaries. In de Maistre's view, the French Revolution is a divine punishment for France. France had not follow its special vocation: to be a stronghold of the christian faith, and therefore came the Revolution. Perhaps the most interesting thing is that all De Maistre's predictions became true, specially the Restauration of Monarchy. Most books about the French Revolution are pure apologies. If you want to read something very different, read this book.

Conspiracies, Cover-Ups and Crimes
Published in Paperback by Illuminet Press (July, 1996)
Author: Jonathan Vankin
Amazon base price: $16.95
Used price: $10.95
In the first half of this entertaining guide to contemporary paranoia, Jonathan Vankin introduces us to some of the leading figures in modern conspiracy, from self-styled political leader Lyndon LaRouche to Kerry Thornley, co-creator of the underground religion Discordianism and a possible "second Oswald." Then, in part two, he puts together all the disparate strands of conspiracy theory into one overarching narrative that includes the Freemasons, Nazi occultists, CIA-brainwashed assassins, the Mafia... you name it, Vankin's probably found a way to fit it into the puzzle. The point is not that this is the secret history of the world order, but, as he writes, "civilization is a conspiracy against reality." In order for the world to run smoothly, and for us to be "normal" participants, Vankin argues, we have to accept a lot of things on faith. Conspiracy theorists refuse to do that, and consequently are usually dismissed as mentally unbalanced. But what if they are right and what we've been led to believe turns out to be wrong? A fascinating and provocative book that may well lead you to never trust the newspapers and nightly broadcasts again.
Average review score:

Better than other conspiracy theory books!
This book really makes you wonder about things. It was really fun to read because it gives you an alternative perspective to what you have heard about certain events such as the JFK assassination and UFOs. It has a seriousness about it that makes every conspiracy seem like it definetley was a conspiracy. It was a good book.

Pure Paranoia is merely a Paperback away...
My employer used to laugh whenever I would mention the existence of vast conspiracies working around us in the world today. Then I lent him this book. Now he merely smiles and nods, with the occasional nervous glance over his shoulder.
Two main sections help deliver tone that exists in the world of conspiracy theory. The first section examines a cross-section of the theorists themselves; from the flaky personalities capitalizing on the public's need to know, to the ordinary people (like you or I) that find themselves sucked into the realm of the unbelievable, the unexplainable, and the unavoidable. The second section then broadsides you with a vast collection of some of the most intense and complicated examples of what conspiracy theory is all about.
The key to this book's success at making you think is that it doesn't pick and choose which plots and cover-ups are real or imagined. Instead, it merely dumps all of the facts and theories right in your lap, leaving you no choice but to decide for yourself what you can or can't dismiss as paranoid folly. Highly recommended for believers & skeptics alike.

Constitutional Construction: Divided Powers and Constitutional Meaning
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (July, 1999)
Author: Keith E. Whittington
Amazon base price: $55.00
Used price: $44.95
Collectible price: $64.56

Constitional theory with more than the Constitution
Whittington's argument is phenomenal: there is more to Constitutional theory than words or ideas surrounding its creation. There are a multiplicity of actors and institutions that interpret it according to their vantage.

Looking at crises in American history, Whittington realizes there is more than the Constitution that its words. "High crimes and misdemeanors" mean different things to different people in different situations. The Constitution as a compact among people or among states also gives rise to radically different interpretations of the delegated powers of government. By examining eras that streched the rule of American law to the breaking point, the impeachment of Samuel Chase, the Nixon impeachment, nullification, and others, Whittington takes a full view of Constitutionalism for what it is: an evolving philosophy shaped by more than the Framers and Courts. It is shaped by the Executive, the Legislature, and the will of the people.

It is a constantly evolving document whose meaning is defined according to those who interpret it. A great piece of writing, written very well weaving the story of America with the evolution of Constitutionalism. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a full understanding of American government.

Well written concise and to the point
I thoroughly enjoyed the book from cover to cover. It all started with the forward and biography and moved quickly with the rest of the reading. Mr. Whittington's ideas and theories concerning the Constitution were well laid out and easy to understand. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a better understanding of the Constitution.

Contemporary Japan (Contemporary States and Societies)
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (January, 2000)
Author: Duncan McCargo
Amazon base price: $75.00
Used price: $35.97
Average review score:

A Valuable Text on Japan
Contemporary Japan by Duncan McCargo is an exceptionally well written and succinct overview of Japan today perfectly suited for use in a course on Asian politics. The book is particularly helpful in that it begins with an overview of the various perspectives and approaches which characterize the debate among Japanese experts today. In the following chapters McCargo refers often to the differing viewpoints of particular writers and scholars. McCargo also provides a concise historical overview--something often omitted by other texts. The book does not provide any detailed analysis of the current economic crisis. Nevertheless, Contemporary Japan is recommended for its clarity and good writing.

How is Japan now, and why - A marvellous book
This book is just a marvellous description and explanation about how Japan is nowadays, and why it is like that. It addresses all the key points and gives all the hints for understanding Japan. I am living in Japan and needed some gide for understanding Japanese politics, society, working environment, culture, and others... I found that in this book. It contains many useful and updated information, but not in excess. Just marvellous! It is a pleasure to read it. Handy and easy.

Corporate Power, American Democracy, and the Automobile Industry

Provoking and witty!
If you've raised an eyebrow at the recent Bridgestone/Firestone/Ford scandal, get ready to raise two-you may need to borrow a few more-when you read this book. In Corporate Power, American Democracy, and the Automobile Industry, Stan Luger provides an intriguing historical context (think shady past) for the auto industry's latest disregard of public safety and consumer protection. If you think tire failures and SUV rollovers are bad, dig deeper-this is just icing. Luger gives you the cake-the misdeeds of corporate greed run thick through America's car industry. This book recounts forty years of the automobile industry's use (and misuse) of corporate power and reveals how this power has influenced public policy, politics, and our everyday car culture. From public safety to environmental protection, Luger illustrates how the automobile industry has flexed its muscles in the political arena to, guess what, maximize profit at our expense. Luger tracks the car industry's patterns of power and shows us that the market isn't just about supply and demand-it's about influence, decisions of the elite, and a disregard for the democratic process.

Luger shows how, time and again, the automobile industry has shirked responsibility for the negative impact of its products and held regulations at bay. For example, Luger explains how "blaming the drive" is a well-worn response of the auto industry. Recently, Bridgestone/Firestone tried to argue that its tires aren't faulty-SUV drives are at fault for improper tire inflation. Luger gives us the historical pattern for this position: from the late 1930s up until the early 1960s, the auto industry repeatedly argued that the cause of automobile accidents lay with the driver. It argued that increased driver education and responsibility would eliminate most accidents and pushed for programs and legislation that funded drivers' education and stiffened enforcement of traffic violations. Of course, Ralph Nader proved in the mid-1960s that the driver wasn't to blame, and that the car-unsafe at any speed-was. Which brings us to Luger's important point: social movements, such as Nader's consumer rights campaigns, are key to meeting capital's flagrant abuses head-on. Whether it's the labor movement or the environmental movement, organized response can challenge corporate power.

But don't just read this book for its hard-hitting analysis; it's also a witty narrative with juicy asides about the sleazier side of the automobile industry. You'll die laughing when you come across the story about the most expensive executive midnight snack in history (don't read it while driving!).

Thorough, Smart & Sassy
Corporate Power, American Democracy and the Automobile Industry is a must read for anyone who wants to go deeper than "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" into the automania that is America. Thoroughly researched, politically savvy, and sharply critical of corporate control of our democracy, this book fits oh so well with all election year reading material. Makes you want to dump that SUV and jump on the bus!
