A thorough and respectful analysis
You will be hard pressed to find another book written with this level of analysis. The Zapatista rebellion was not an overnight reaction to a single set of economic rules, but is rather the manifestation of centuries of injustices, financial hardships and lack of political efficacy. This book explains the multitude of issues and events leading to the Zapatista rebellion. Dr. Harvey is a scholar who understands the political complexity and communicates this for all to understand.

The definitive account in English on the Chiapas Rebellion.
The book has all the substance and objectivity of a scholarly work by someone who has done research in Chiapas for over a decade, but unfolds with all the suspense of a good novel. It is the definitive account to date on this very important topic and a significant contribution to the debate on indigenous rights.

He gets strait to the point
This is how all books should be like. It's too bad high schools don't use books like this one. Gomez-Quinones doesn't sugarcoat anything in his book.

He tells it like it is
This book is written on facts. I highly recommend it to others.

China Misperceived: American Illusions and Chinese Reality

The Real Story
Despite its politically conservative credentials, the book takes a needed and hard look at the overly romantic view of China still held dear by many in Washington and Wall Street. More importantly, Mosher details why this view of China has persisted with a balanced and careful analysis that traces the roots of American views of China.

Readers will come away knowing that criticizing the necrotic thugs who rule China doesn't constitute "anti-Chinese" racism and doesn't make them a conservative crank (I'm a democrat). For too long, critics of our China policy have been labelled ignorant and lacking the exclusive understanding of China's "uniqueness" that Holbrooke-types claim to possess.

An important work that deserves a look and that has been vindicated by China's recent behavior. Of course, all that will change after WTO, I'm sure someone is saying in Washington right now...

Blinded by Beijing...
Another excellent book by Steven Mosher. It explores the reasons for the persistent misunderstanding by Americans of China's motives and methods of operation.

The bottom line is fairly simple: if an expert criticizes China, they're denied access, if an expert praises China, they're given access. Without access, how can an "expert" be expert? Thus, the only "credible" China "experts" are those whom of whom the government in Beijing approves.

you wont give me strange looks if I tell you I know CCP
This book, deeply touched my heart, is so unique, yet deflected from mainstreet opinion in USA, although author tried not to be that way. So far, all you had know about Chinese Communist Party may not more than anti-human-right, uncivilized, insidious deadly manic. But, some of you may ever wondered, in very remote distance prehaps, how could them win Chinese civil war in 1940s, how could them defeat UN army in 1950s. by knowing some Korean War, you may also ask, how could CCP turned sloppiest old Chinese cowards into warriers.
Well, if you have those questions, you will find answers in this book, if you never doubt about mainstreet media and don't have any of those question, you may going to draw a whole new conclusion about CCP after reading this book.
If allows me please, I'll say this is the only book you will understand China in the past and present. Thanks to the author, a great unprejudiced reporter.

A book that explains why Mao (at the beginning) was good....
This is a really powerful book..... It is an account of China under the government of the Nationalist Chinese written by an American journalist who, in the end, fell under the spell of Mao's PLA not for ideological reasons-- but because of a personal affinity for the Chinese people.... who were suffering....

I was advised to read this book in college by a professor who claimed that "if you can read this book and not cry, then you don't have a heart." Certainly, Belden's account of how through Communism the Chinese people relieved themselves of some of the subjugation which a feudalish society compounded by Western imperialism subjected them to, graphically illustrates suffering.... murder, rape, and many other human vices.... in ways that few other books do.... and hints at WHY people (barring events of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution) can still respect Mao as a leader and a liberator of a nation....

I'd recommend this book to anyone.... if you can get a copy....

I have a feeling that this is a review that no one will ever read....

Excellent Book
This book is funny, romantic, suspenseful and a real page turner. It is also nice to have a book that a person with religious values can read and enjoy. I had a hard time putting it down!

Funny and Witty
This is just a really good and encapturing book. One of the funniest things I've ever read. It follows David Rogers, and astronaut turned CIA agent, and his journey to Amen, Arizona where he is to find out all he can about the elementary librarian Libby James. In truth Libby James is really Elisabeth Jamison, a rich successful business woman who has inexplicably moved to Amen after her parents death in a car accident. Rogers is sent to investigate her and gather evidence against her so the CIA can arrest her for laundering money and such into foreign terrorist camps. Rogers soon finds out however that it's not Libby who's doing and decides, after falling in love with her, to prove her innocence and catch the real bad guy. This book is great fun to read aloud and hilariously entertaining. I would recommend this book to anyone enjoys a good laugh and plot.

Second part of an important book over Aztecs' civilisation
Here is the last part of Aztecs' History in CHIMALPAHIN's compiling. It's followed by a precious kind of calendar by CHIMALPAHIN himself. A prime material to understand Aztecs' meaning of life. I'm waiting for the 4 other books of this exceptional collection of indigenous testimonies (Please excuse my bad English: I'm an usual French writer)

An important book over Aztecs' civilization
There are many "Codices" about MesoAmerica. This one is presented as a translate of primitive nahuatl compiling of Aztecs' History. An important contribution to Mexican History. The total collection counts 6 books; two are now available.

An easy read in understanding the Microsoft Antitrust Case
With all the various information available concerning the Microsoft monopoly, it was wonderful to find an objective source that followed the events before and during the Microsoft case, analyzed the monopolistic tendencies of the software market in general, and compared this information with previous monopolies. The best characteristic of this book is that it explains the events and legalities of the case in such a way that it is not at all difficult to understand.

State of the art.
The contributions to this work are all excellent, well written articles by the most respected experts on the leading edge of antitrust analysis.

A Superb Analysis of Contemporary South African Politics
This book is mandatory reading for any political science major. In a media driven age where the truth is intentionally distorted to further political agendas, Adam-Slabbert&Moodley provide the cold-blooded truth about the hypocracy of contemporary South African politics. In so doing, they lift the veil of piousness surrounding the 'heros' of the apartheid struggle and reveal the true motives of these modern day pirates. Extemely thought provoking reading.

Highly reccomended for students, faculty and researchers.
"This timely book is comparable to a seminar on contemporary politics in South Africa. The authors are all veteran analysts of South African political changes since the 1960's. In South African terms, they are moderate left. Thus, they avoid the triumphalism of the celebrants of the demise of apartheid and instead comment searchingly on the dilemma of promoting liberal democracy while engaging in massive attempts to reduce inequality... Part serious-popular history, part comparative political analysis, part sociology, part academic journalism, the discussion is not for a beginner but for the reader already initiated into South Africana...The conclusion is rather sober: politics in the future is no longer about race but about the underclass challenging the "liberation aristocracy." Highly recommended for upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and researchers." -H.Glickman, Haverford College Taken from: Choice. June 1999

Amazing in scope and design!
Brad Miner has put together the most readable encyclopaedia I've ever come across. This is so informative and interesting that I went cover to cover in no time. Brilliant reference material, I can see how invaluable this book will be in supporting intellectual inquiry. Where Mr. Miner outdoes himself though, is the quotes that sum up each entry, quite astounding in its concise summation, and really hits the nail on the head for some of the most important concepts - it's just one of many that I loved, but check out the quote for T.S Eliot from his Ash Wednesday (1930):

"If the lost word is lost, if the spent word is spent/If the unheard, unspoken/Word is unspoken, unheard;/Still is the unspoken word, the Word unheard/The Word without a word, the Word within/The world and for the world;/And the light shone in the darkness and/Against the Word the unstilled world still whirled/About the centre of the silent Word."

A Conservative Reader's Encyclopedia
As far as I know, this is the only book of its kind. There are books of quotations (Right Thinking), anthologies (The Portable Conservative Reader), and histories (The Conservative Intellectual Movement in America), but nothing else which does what this book's subtitle describes.

The editor, Brad Miner, is a former literary editor at National Review and has based his book on Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia, a popular reference book for literary and cultural matters. He has included terms, authors, a few historical essays, a top ten book list, an extensive bibliography, and his own attempt to outline the principles of conservatism. Each entry contains items which are underlined if they are referred to elsewhere in the text, like hypertext links on a web page. The entry ends with a relevant quotation and suggestions for further reading.

In keeping with the notion of an encyclopedia, Miner has chosen to be accurate rather than opinionated. This is reasoned, thoughtful conservatism, not the firebrand of talk radio. Miner begins his survey in the 1800s, with Edmund Burke, in itself a sign of deep reading. Not everyone appreciates the origin and intellectual roots of conservatism as Miner does. I also applaud his recognition of the importance of Russell Kirk to the formation and development of the modern conservative movement.

This small gem is a handy reference book for various matters related to conservatism. As a one-volume sourebook for further reading, it is unsurpassed. It belongs on the shelves of school libraries, public libraries, and of anyone with even a passing interest in politics or intellectual history.
