An essential political survey of issues
This is the fifth handbook for new Congress which raises issues likely to be major agenda items for decades; form tax cuts and public health program reforms to creating policies for returning the federal government to a healthier size and scope. Included is an update on terrorism initiatives and their threats to civil liberties. The Cato Handbook For Congress is an essential political survey of issues which are certain not to become quickly dated.

Well Thought Out
A logical, concise, and thorough analysis of issues no body wants to discuss. The topics are well presented one by one within the context of the threats to the American way of life as prescribed by the US Constitution. It seems that we have lost our way and this book is a road map to set us back on course. Major topics include: Terrorism, Government Reform, Civil Liberties, Money and Banking, Domestic Policy, Regulation, Energy & Environment, Foreign & Domestic Policy, International Economic Policy. The Cato Institute is addressing the issues here that every congressional representative, senator, and the president are afraid to address because US politics is not about doing what is right, but who can steal the most.

As a libertarian I am sickened by the current state of the state. Federalism is dead, boondoggle's are a dime a dozen, the government rapes me every paycheck, social security is a pyramid scam that allows only a select few early participates tremendous return, the world cop (US) is hated by all nations and yet it costs us billions to protect these whiney countries, government jobs are just an extended welfare program, corporate welfare is offensive, environmental laws favor deep pockets, etc. This excellent book does more then just identify the problems. It suggests logical remedies to the many problems the government has created. The writers not only balance the budget, but they cut $309 Billion in chapter 23 --every I agree with every cut. I have sent a copy of this book to both my congressional and senatorial representative with a note that this is my desired action plan. I challenge every American that loves this country and wants the insanity to stop to do the same.

Timeless Wisdom of Radical Whiggery
Cato's Letters are a must have for any lover of liberty. They are filled with enough passion, wisdom, and wit to make them shining gems on any bookshelf. The philosophy expounded in these letters is that of radical liberty according to the laws of nature. It is made clear throughout that governments are the servants of people, not there masters. The only just role of government is to protect the life, liberty, and property of the governed, any other role being usurped and explicitly tyrannical. It was this radical philosophy that made Cato's Letters such a huge influence in America throughout the 18th century. Their influence on the Revolutionary generation is rivaled only by John Locke and his Second Treatise of Government. Above all, these letters are classics of reason and resistance. In my opinion, they are the best exposition of libertarian principles ever written.

radicalism at its best
Anyone who adocates capitalism, liberty, freedom, etc. should read these letters. They inspired the American Revolutionaries. They inspired me. I'm willing to bet that they'll inspire you.

captivating, astute and indespensible
In "Century of Dishonor" author Helen jackson has written an indepth and scholarly account of the US government's policy of instiutionalized "Indian" extermination. Jackson's account of the infamous "Trail of Tears" in which 17,000 Cherokees were forcibly removed from their homes and driven at bayonet point to Oklahoma by the US Army,an unspeakable atrocity in which only half the Cherokee population survived. In her summation of the treatment accorded to the Cherokees, Helen Jackson writes that "In the whole history of our Government's dealing with the Indian tribes, there is no record so black as the record of perfidy to this nation. There will come a time in the remote future when, to the student of American history, it will seem well-nigh incredible."

"Century of Dishonor" remains essential reading for those who wonder where Hitler obtained the background material on concentration camps and genocide: US government frontier policy. A captivating, astute and indespensible addition to American history.

One of the most intriguing books of the 19C
Helen Hunt Jackson was the widowed wife of a succesful Pennsilvanian buisness man. She was acostomed to many trips to the frontier west, upon which she had many interactions with the local indians there. She was greatly distresed at their condition. Which led her to become an author. She once said that regalrdless of where you open the book on the american indian, there is not a year or page without a dark stain. This book was as influential on the people of her time as Harriet Beacher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin was on the people in antebellum america. Certainly a must read for all history enthusiasts

great book
this was a required text in a college political science class. the book gave concise examples of concepts and read easily. plus, dr. hertzke was one of the book's editors.

Transcending liberalist ideology: the church-state case
I give this book more exactly 4,5 stars. I am glad I acquired the book and included it in my personal library of political science. The authors build on a solid framework of different church-state regimes. They analyse neither too many nor two few countries. However, extension by others to cover more countries would be welcome. One can also ask if a similar approach could not be used for studying relations of the state to other organisations than churches. In all cases, the hypothesis is that explicit separation of the state from certain values leads to implicit support to those who are the strongest in pushing the values of their own.

THe book was published recently so it even has some information about 9-11 and its impact.

Good source for third world development.

Great Textbook and Resource Tool
I had to read this book for an undergraduate course on the politics of the developing world. It can be difficult to read at times if the reader does not have some understanding of the developing world or the theories that surround their slow development into modernity. Overall it is an wonderful text for building a knowledge base and an excelllent reference tool.

Classic, compelling narrative on wolves & Adolph Murie
Tim Rawson has written an engaging and beautifully researched book exploring the saga of wolf control in Denali National Park. He also documents this controversial issue outside that park, both in Alaska and throughout the country. It is an unthinking oversight, however, that the publisher neglected--either in the subtitle or in the Library of congress catalog info--to mention the fascinating character who resides in these pages: Adolph Murie. This lesser known brother of Olaus Murie was largely responsible for our modern day understanding that wolves are an essential part of the ecosystem. Pre Adolph Murie it was popular to think of wolves as vermin in need of extermination. Adolph's life work, as it unfolds in Rawson's pages, turns this scholarly history into compelling biography. Even if you haven't read Barry Lopez' OF WOLVES AND MEN (or if you have any interest in wolves in general), CHANGING TRACKS is a true classic.

A scholarly, involving survey
Alaska residents and students of national parks issues will find Changing Tracks involving: it details the events which shaped both Mt. McKinley Park and the national policy on dealing with predators in national parks in general, outlining the decisions and actions which have influenced park service policies throughout the country. A variety of experiences, from game managers to conservationists, are presented in this scholarly, involving survey.

The great "Grey coat"
Karl XI is one of my favourites in the Swedish history, Upton's biography gives a fair view of his too short lives. That without leaving his shortcomings as person and ruler. Karl XI may be less well known as his father Karl X Gustav and son Karl XII but far more interesting to study for a modern reader than the warriors. He stands in the history toghether with Gustav Vasa and Axel Oxenstierna as the builders of the early modern Swedish state.
I will recommend this book to everyone interested in Swedish or 17th century European history.

Excellent review of a forgotten king
Swedes tend to jump from Charles X Gustav to his grandson Charles XII, forgetting Charles XI. But this was one of Sweden's greatest kings. He broke the aristocratic oligarchy, shored up Crown finances and reorganised the civil service, the army and the navy. Most of all, he kept the peace for 25 years when Sweden was large but poor and all its neighbours were anxious to lay their hands on choice parts of it. Many of his reforms lasted until well into the 20th century and some are still relevant today. Charles XII may have been glamorouos, but he foolishly lost an empire. Charles XI may have been a bore, but he preserved it all his life!

30 years of Cherokee History
From 1794 until 1834 the Cherokee Nation underwent a change unlike any civilization in the world, past, present or future. It is this time period on which the book focuses. The author covers the years before and after his "Cherokee Renascence" in the first and final chapter.

When people write the history of the Cherokee in Georgia it is understandable that they concentrate on the years leading up to the "Trail of Tears." This tragic event overshadows the history of this Nation, and as William McLoughlin shows us, it is a history rich with acheivement and accomplishment, from the development of a written language by Sequoyah to the adaptation of that language by a majority of the Nation in a 6-month time frame, establishment of a government and newspaper (the Cherokee Phoenix, first American Indian newspaper) and many other accomplishments.

McLoughlin does not pull punches, as many who cover the time period and he does not have an agenda. He accurately recounts the details of the flourishing civilization while describing the evolution of a second society, those who disagreed with the decidedly nationalistic moves of its leaders to protect itself against the desires of the United States and the government of Georgia. Interestingly, Sequoyah was one of the Cherokee against the movement towards nationalism.

A compelling read, factually backed and well researched.

A gripping history
A comprehensive history of the Cherokees up to the Trail of Tears. This history covers the building of a great nation that was able to maintain its own culture while integrating with the developing America, and its subsequent downfall.
