Well-written, eye-opening likely future for America
Author predicts America will become a multiracial state due to non-White immigration. This will lead to increased racial problems and groups will seek their own racial enclaves in the US. Leaving us like the Balkans. Our once great opportunity will be lost.

I especially liked the information on and the analysis of multiracial states like Brazil and Belgium. I've read it twice and it's worth the wait. Readers might also want to consider "My Awakening" by David Duke who offers a excellent though blunter analysis.

Shows where America is headed and why
This book is an excellent source of information on what America's future is under the present (since 1965 to now) policies on immigration. The USA is headed for a Balkans type civil war, a real "civil war" this time. It reinforces what Thomas W. Chittum has already pointed out in his book Civil War Two. Be prepared, because like it or not, it's coming.

Solace for the lonely pacifist
This is an entertaining, entirely readable book about the men and women who went against the grain and refused to see the virtue in America's interventionism and imperialism in the 20th century.

These are not the people who opposed the war in Vietnam. There are hundreds of books about that. These are the real isolationists: the ones who failed to support WWII in spite of the fact that their dissent ruined their reputations and sometimes careers.

America First! is the ultimate book for people who refuse to follow the crowd and who cannot bring themselves to believe that sometimes it's okay to send young men to agony and death overseas.

As the previous reviewer noted, Kauffman writes about people and the left and on the right because, of course, both parties were unabashedly in favor of fighting both world wars and pacifist conservatives and liberals were always on the fringes. Kauffman offers some memorable anecdotes and introduces some truly interesting characters (like the Roosevelt relative who helped FDR cheat on Eleanor but could not stomach his bloody war and wasn't ashamed to admit it).

If you feel like you're the only pacifist on earth, read this book and discover that you're among some amazing company. Thank you, Mr. Kauffman.

How to build a Left-Right coalition
This terrific study of American "isolationism" (i.e., non-interventionism) may be one of the most important political manuals of the last several years. And it may be the first why-to/how-to guide for building a viable Left-Right political coalition. You see, as Kauffman explains it, an America First, mind-your-own-business foreign policy is one area where the far Left and the far Right have often agreed. Therefore, although you might expect this volume to be filled with profiles of Pat Buchanan and other right-wingers, it's not; rather, it examines the ideas of such notable America Firsters as Jack Kerouac, Gore Vidal, and Edward Abbey--all of them Men of the Left. The New Left of the 1960s and much of today's non-interventionist, anti-state Hard Right have a lot in common, Kauffman says. Perhaps it's time the two extremes joined hands in defiance of America's Military Industrial Complex

Halfway through review
So far I rate this book 5 stars. I am also writing a book on this topic, and one of the most compelling reasons I have encountered for the decriminalization of substances is the situation in Iran. There dealers of Heroin have been subjected to the death penalty, and the traffic is unabated. As mentioned in this book and other sources, the harsher the penalties, the greater the profits. In every society there are persons so desperate and lacking in education and opportunities that death itself is no deterrent to such profit. In our (US) society recently a former chief of police in Los Angeles said that even casual users should be shot. He did not include cigarette smokers or beer drinkers. Fanatics are not often troubled by attacks of logic.
Abraham Lincoln said Prohibition laws run contrary to the principles upon which the United States was founded. He is one of George W. Bush's heroes. Dubya seems not to have read his hero.

Intense,truthful,and well researched!!
Read this book!! In it lies the truth behind the legal-illegal substance/drug story and thier relative harms. You will be surprised. Offered are models for legalization that only a brain-washed fool would argue with. Open the book, read, then open the debate! Well written. Bravo!!

American Constitutional Law
American Constitutional Law: Introductory Essays and Selected Cases by Alpheus Thomas Mason and Donald Grier Stephenson is a book that when read you'll find an intricate blend of history and politics.

This is an excellent book for those studing constitutional law as there are plenty of case study with selected readings, queries, and key terms associated with each particular case. You'll get a real good dose of the constitution here and why decisions are the way they are at that time. Applying standards drawn from the constitution, the Supreme Court is the ultimate arbitor and guardian of individual privilege and governmental prerogative alike.

This book gives the reader a broad understanding of the present with respect to the past and includes relevant extrajudicial material. A very good introductory book on American Constitutional Law.

This book is the best basic text on U.S. Constitutional law.
For any student of American constitutional law, this book is the best exposition of the fundamentals of the U.S. Constitution and the Supreme Court. Further enquiry into the subject is not possible without an understanding of the ideas presented in this book.

Sound Analysis
The collection of original essays in this volume is impressive. Together, they explore the history and current state of government policy toward health care in the United States. Each essay is clear and relevant. And the proposals make great good sense. Health care is far too important a service to be left in the hands of politicians and bureaucrats. This book helps explain why.

from Business Information Alert
"American Health Care" is a collection of multidisciplinary essays supporting the argument that government and business must assume appropriate roles within health care to effectively change it. Working within these seemingly disparate roles, government and business should focus on how the private health market can further the health care system's ability to provide social services as a function in the marketplace.

The book challenges the concept that government can effectively manage the nation's health care. This model -- the authors collectively suggest -- was questioned by the public through a lack of support for the 1993 Clinton health care reform package. The editor compiles the analyses of expert economists, physicians, lawyers, and historians to explain the underlying rationale behind the public hesitancy to accept the notion that government should and can fix the deficiencies of the US health care system.

'American Health Care" provides insight that allows learned readers to speculate about where markets can take health care now and in the future. Its authors recognize that there are no fast solutions coming down the pike. This work presents concepts that are intended to generate constructive conversation toward the improvement of health care. The ideas are supported through the substantial notes and references accompanying each chapter.

Topics of discussion covered by the contributors represent four major policy areas that provide stumbling blocks to system-wide change. Essays in the first section contain discussions of the issues involved with health insurance financing, including an in-depth analysis of the Medicare program. In part 2, contributors look at health care services and institutions, antitrust issues, and reform at the state level. The effects of regulation on the drug approval process and its impact on patient care is examined in part 3, and the final section of the book looks at issues involving liability, licensing, and the health care fee structure.

The Independent Institue of California is a public policy education and reserch organization the aims -- through its various publishing programs -- to redefine the debate over public issues. In "American Health Care," it has provided ample scholarship to do so.

facts, facts, and more facts
Sharon O'brian replaced the juicy radical language of most books written on American Indian-US government relations such as Custer Died For Your Sins with the text of acts of congress, Supreme Court decisions, and presidential administration policies. Included also is a chapter on European land claims and conflicts that arose between them and the Indians and amongst themselves. It is none of it controversial, all of it educational. It's an excellent guide for anyone claiming to be a U.S. historian.

Great Focus; exceptional primer
There is much to say in favor of this book. Its main focus is the operation of tribal governments. Because there is so much variety, the author looks at five representative governments in some detail--the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois League), the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, the Teton Sioux, the Pueblos, and the Yakimas (who since the publication of this book have revised the official spelling, using the name that appears in the treaty of 1855, Yakama). O'Brien wrote this book with the cooperation and assistance of those she was writing about.

In addition to this focus, the book has the best brief overview of Federal Indian policy I've seen anywhere (about 70 pages). Unlike most books on the subject, the book is amply illustrated with photographs and other images, as well as maps, graphs, and abundant sidebars.

I always use one or more texts on Federal Indian law and policy in my American Indian history courses. Students often call these books dry. When I have used O'Brien's book, students have praised the book and said they enjoy reading it.

Must Read
(Planeta.com Journal) - One of the most influential books this year, this work examines the relationship of parks and Indian cultures. Remarkably, this story has not been well told -- until now. The authors point out that "one can find thousands of books about American Indians, a considerable body of literature about natural parks, but almost nothing linking the two." The book draws on extensive research and more than 200 interviews with Native Americans, environmentalists, park rangers and politicians. It also asks important questions such as what are the obligations owed to those displaced by park creation and do aboriginal people have special rights to their homelands. This book is one of the year's must reads.

Highly recommended contribution to Native American studies.
Beginning with Yosemite and Yellowstone, American Indians & National Parks explains how the creation of these two oldest national parks affected native peoples and set a pattern followed with the subsequent creations of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore; Canyon de Chelly; Chaco Culture National Historical Park; Death Valley National Monument; Everglades National Park; Glacier National Park; Glen Canyon; Grand Canyon National Park; Mesa Verde National Park; Monument Valley Tribal Park; Navajo National Monument; Olympic National Park; Pipe Spring National Monument; Rainbow Bridge National Monument; and Wupatiki National Monument. Robert Keller and Michael Turek collaborate to show how and why the National Park Service changed its policies and attitudes toward Native American tribes, the response of environmental organizations to native demands, and how the park service dealt with native claims to hunting and fishing rights in Glacier, Olympic, and Everglades National Parks. American Indians & National Parks is a carefully researched, ably presented reference that is highly recommended to students of Native American studies, environmentalists, and National Park Service operatives.

The American Republic

A great American poltical thinker!
This book is the only one that can really convince you that Brownson ranks just below Tocqueville as a commentator on America. Lawler's introduction--A GREAT BOOK ON AMERICA IN ITSELF--is what will convince you.

The American Republic and Its Constitution.
Written by former Transcendentalist turned Roman Catholic conservative, Orestes Brownson, _The American Republic_ is an inquiry into the nature of government, the formation of the Constitution, and the relationship between federal and states' rights in America right after the Civil War period. Orestes Brownson notes that he writes his book for all Americans but in particular for those who are Roman Catholic so as to understand their nation and its Constitution. As a Roman Catholic, Orestes Brownson bases much of his argument upon the writings of Plato, Aristotle, Saint Augustine, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Suarez, Pierre Leroux, and Abbate Gioberti, the majority of whom were also Catholic Christians. The first section of this book deals with the origins and nature of government. Orestes Brownson notes that a proper understanding of government is possible only by recognizing that man is a creature endowed with certain characteristics, but dependent upon his Creator. Next, he considers eight different theories which are offered as explanations of the origin of government and the principle of sovereignity. These theories are listed as:
"I. Government originates in the right of the father to govern his child.
II. It originates in convention, and is a social compact.
III. It originates in the people, who, collectively taken, are sovereign.
IV. Government springs from the spontaneous development of nature.
V. It derives its right from the immediate and express appointment of God; -
VI. From God through the Pope, or visible head of the spiritual society; -
VII. From God through the people; -
VIII. From God through the natural law."
Orestes Brownson considers each of these theories in turn and shows how they are each problematic. In a subsequent section, Brownson considers the Constitution of government. Here he references the work of Traditionalist French Catholic, Count Joseph de Maistre, who wrote on the generation of constitutions and was a reactionary opponent of the French Revolution. Brownson argues against those revolutionaries who believe that constitution is determined by a social contract which is agreed upon as savages become civilized (such as the theory advocated by Jean-Jacques Rousseau). Brownson considers the sovereignity of kings and the Roman emperors and shows how they differ from the Constitution in America. Next Brownson turns his attention to the United States and its Constitution. In particular, Brownson examines the issue of Confederacy versus Union that was played out in the debate between federalist and anti-federalist and saw its realization in _The Constitution_ which superseded _The Articles of Confederation_. Indeed, it is the issue of states' rights which was to play such a large part in the subsequent Civil War between the Southern and Northern States. Brownson considers the issue of secession and shows how those in the Southern states believed themselves to belong to a Confederacy and thus believed that their states had the right to secede. Alternatively, those in the Northern states including then President Abraham Lincoln argued that the union must be preserved at all costs. Brownson shows how this preservation of the union occurred even at the risk of defying certain parts of the Constitution, at the same time as it was argued that it must be preserved. Brownson shows that since the member of the Confederacy of Southern States believed himself to belong to a confederacy and thus believed that his state had a right to secede from a confederacy to which it belonged he was not a traitor or a revolutionary since he acted within his beliefs. Brownson considers the reconstruction of the South and shows how the Civil War involved a conflict between different notions of democracy. The South represented an individualist (Jeffersonian) notion of democracy, as opposed to a territorial democracy or the socialistic democracy of those who wanted to preserve the union. The war was not fought over the issue of slavery contrary to what may have been believed in Europe at the time by those who advocated against slavery. Finally, Brownson turns his attention to the political destiny of the country. As a Roman Catholic, Brownson argues that religion must play an important role in the reshaping of the nation. After the Civil War, the entire nation emerged as a united people, and it is necessary for the Northern States to offer peace with those who they fought against in the South. Brownson remarks that the Catholic church is not to be united with the state, nor is the church to be subsumed under the state, but rather both must be allowed to freely exist. These remarks by Brownson are important for understanding his position and the position of the church regarding earthly sovereigns. This essay is an important contribution to political thought from a Roman Catholic perspective regarding the nation in America which had just undergone the turbulent struggle of the Civil War. In addition, this essay is important because it focuses upon an issue which was to continue to play such a large role in national politics, that of the rights of states. Much of the modern political debate can be understood in terms of this single issue.

Jefferson the Moralist
Jean Yarborough's book is an excellent compilation of Jefferson's beliefs on what constitutes good character to maintain republican government. She correctly surmises Jefferson would be appalled at modern America's obsession with making money and consumption. She also relates how he would bemoan the loss of leisure and family time. He would be disturbed by American's long commutes to work and large crowded cities. Yarborough relates how Jefferson would recommend reading, frugality, study, and emphasis on morality in schools. She further points out he would expect the cultivation of good character is essential to a well-ordered republic. Overall a great book.

Beautiful
This book is truly beautiful! The author goes seamlessly over the topic of liberalism VS. republicism. It is also very instructive upon the polictical views of Thomas Jefferson.
