Lesko is a money saver!
Mathew Lesko should get a special price from the government. This book in question, 1001 Free Goodies and Cheapies
by Matthew Lesko, Mary Ann Martello , has 1001 freed goodies and other cheapies. Lesko makes the material easy to attain and makes the government not seem as cold and distant. Highly Recommended.

Nice job.
This book has many nice addresses to get free stuff. One problem is that to many addresses ask for SASEs. Other then that, this book is great

The Legion of the United States
This little gem of a book is one of the most interesting I have ever read. It covers the disbanding of the Continental Army, the fear of a standing army by some of the Founding Fathers, the anti-military stance of the anti-Federalists, the Constitutional Convention and how Washington was 'elected' as the first President, and how the US quelled both the Indian problems in the Old Northwest and the Whiskey Rebellion.

The narrative is crisp, accurate, and the tale told is fascinating. The cast of characters, from Washington and Frankling, through Hamilton and Gerry, and finally to Anthony Wayne is impressive, spellbinding, and completely fascinating.

It is a great read and gives insight into the troubles, nearly fatal troubles, that the young United States faced in its irst decade and a half as an independent nation.

This book also answers many questions: Why some of the Founders objected to a strong military establishment (Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson were two that did-neither listened to Washington and settled on the dubious security of the militia which Washington considered 'a broken reed.'); why the Indians had to be fought in the Old Northwest; why the Constitution came into being, and finally how the United States finally survived and evolved.

This is a character study of a young nation trying to come to grips with its own nationhood, and how it would fulfill the promise of the Declaration of Independence. It is a fascinating tale told with wit, verve, and accuracy.

Very relevant to contemporary struggles over gun rights.
Dave Palmer makes clear that the Second Amendment was aboutmilitary organization. It was not concerned with the civil rights ofprivate individuals ...

1991-1992 Green Index: A State-By-State Guide to the Nation's Environmental Health

Authors: Bob Hall, Mary Lee Kerr, Press Island, and Institute for Southern Studies

Great, but need updated edition
I agree with the previous reviewer's writeup of this book. It is full of very useful information.

I bought my copy when it came out almost ten years ago, and I am dismayed to find that the authors have not been encouraged to create several more-current editions during all these years.

1991-1992 Green Index: A State-By-State Guide to the Nation'
Bob Hall and Mary Lee Kerr have done an exceptional job compiling useful information in this volume. The book includes the topics of air- and water quality, use and abuse of energy - including automobiles, toxic and hazardous waste, chemicals and other factors that affect us in our homes and workplaces, and governmental policies in place to help clean up our act. It also includes information and statistics on state parks and forest, fishing and hunting, water-front activities, and other leisure-time topics.

The information is laid out in an easy-to-read format with maps, charts, and statistics in each section. Every subject has a separate scale by which the states are ranked as well as an over-all ranking. Another section listing the best and worst environmental aspects of each state is also included. If you are wanting one or two quick facts about the environmental health of a certain state, these maps and ranking charts are a terrific way to find them. Quick and painless.

A list of indicators is given for each topic (i.e. air sickness lists 18 indicators and sources), as well. These "indicators" are the different types of pollution/problems that exist and their sources. In addition to the maps, charts, statistics, and rankings, is a very informative narrative further explaining the research findings. For those of you wanting a little more information, you'll find it here.

This book is a good resource for anyone, whether you're looking for the healthiest place to live or curious about the environmental health of your current home. I'd recommend it to anyone concerned about the air they breath or the water they drink. Be warned, however, the truth can sometimes be painful (and frightening). Perhaps more of us need to be aware of these statistics.

The authors have done a great service by putting this book out. My only wish is that there were a more current index. Well, Bob Hall and Mary Lee Kerr, when can we expect it?

Abraham Clark and the Quest for Equality in the Revolutionary Era
Published in Hardcover by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Pr (December, 1982)
Author: Ruth Bogin
Amazon base price: $30.00
Average review score:

The uniquely American struggle for equality
This is a masterful study of the political and economic undercurrents of the American Revolution. Abraham Clark, a Signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey, was an advocate for the middle and working classes. He fought against privilege in every form, often pitting himself against the most powerful, and wealthy, leaders of the Revolution. He feared that America would establish a country in which the domination of the poor by the wealthy would continue. He was also concerned that "new sources of tyranny" would "arise from American centers of power." His economic ideas and initiatives centered on "leveling the playing field" and are still worth considering. Most of his work was in this area, both on the national and state level. Called an "excentric genius" by one of his enemies, Clark's actions were extremely popular among the people of his district. He was held publicly accountable for every major bill which passed during his tenure in the state legislature. As a member of Congress, he was an ardent supporter of James Madison's policies and measures in the area of commerce.

It will make you re-think the American Revolution
This is a masterful political and economic study of the Revolution, from the point of view of a Signer of the Declaration of Independence who was an advocate of the middle and working classes. It contains economic, social and political ideas still worth considering. Abraham Clark represents a proud and unique tradition in America in which the idea of equality is central. He feared tyranny in the form of the wealthy gaining power over the poor, and institutions over the individual. As the author states, he fought every form of privilege: social, military, economic or political. His economic vision and ability made him a major player in shaping our new country.

Lincoln in His Own Words
I purchased this collection of speeches and letters knowing little about America's most beloved president other than what I had learned in my high school history classes. My first impression was "Boy, where have all the good presidents gone?" Aside from the famous speeches we're all familiar with, Lincoln was a prolific man of letters and an amazing presenter of ideas ahead of their time. Our sixteenth president wasn't perfect, but neither was our nation. During perhaps the most crucial period in U.S. history, thank God there was Abraham Lincoln. I grew up as a Democrat, but if Lincoln were running for the presidency today, he would be the first Republican to get my vote. This Library of America edition of Lincoln's speeches and writings is a beautifully bound volume that I will cherish for years to come.

Leadership and Eloquence
This is the second volume of the Library of America Project devoted to the works of Abraham Lincoln. It covers the period after the Lincoln-Douglas Debates and includes many of the records of the Lincoln Presidency and the Civil War. The standard Lincoln materials are included, of course, such as the Gettysburg Address, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the Inauguaral Addresses. But there is immeasurably more. We see Lincoln writing to his Generals, Cabinet members, and other national leaders in his attempt to hold the Union together. We see a lincolns agonizing over military discipline and frequently pardoning deserting soldiers. We see Lincoln dealing with Indian issues in his day; and we see him supporting the use of black troops in the War effort. This volume is highly useful in uderstanding the Civil War. Equally important it teaches the nature of leadership and fortitude. Finally, Lincoln is one of our Nation's great prose writers and the book deserves reading for that reason alone. The Library of America is to be commended for this volume and for its ongoing series.

Accommodating Diversity: National Policies That Prevent Conflict
Published in Hardcover by Lexington Books (January, 2003)
Author: Irwin Deutscher
Amazon base price: $60.00
Used price: $42.31

Great read on cultural diversity
Deutscher's focus is on the positive actions that governments and individuals have taken to accommodate diverse racial and ethnic populations within national communities. Examples, including those of Switzerland and Ghana, and Swedan provide a more optimistic roadmap for peaceful integration of ethnic communities than is portrayed in most global media. The author conveys, in a much less technical manner than in his previous sociological texts, what can be done to foster peaceful solutions to the world's ethnic divisions.

diversity
This book is engaging and surprisingly readable. It shares many of the entertaining anecdotal qualities of Friedman's Lexus and Olive Tree, as Deutscher is well-traveled and has many personal observances. But it is first and foremost a usable compilation of cultural programs worldwide that work. Rather than focus on the well-known headlines-getting tragedies that erupt due to cultural differences such as the tragedies in Rwanda and Bosnia, Deutscher sheds light on policies that inhibit or put a stop to such behaviors. A must-read for public policy students, diplomats and those who are interested in peaceful solutions to cultural problems.

Adams and Jefferson: A Revolutionary Dialogue (A Galaxy Book ; 533)

A Broken Friendship Can Be Repaired
Merrill D. PetersonÕs Adams and Jefferson: A Revolutionary Dialogue is a well-documented study of how two men of differing characters and political views met and became life-long friends. Drawing heavily on the Adams-Jefferson letters and other primary sources, Peterson does a satisfactory job of explaining why these two men became friends and traced the very course of their friendship. In reading this book, I have learned that even though political events like the Election of 1800 and the French Revolution can overwhelm and destroy a friendship, a faithful friend can act as a go-between and help repair a friendship.

Wonderful Little Book
This book is a brilliant account of the fascinating relationship between two of the most brilliant minds in American history. It is a highly enjoyable read, and a welcome companion to the "The Adams-Jefferson Letters."

Africa's Stalled Development: International Causes and Cures
Published in Hardcover by Lynne Rienner Publishers (January, 2003)
Authors: David K. Leonard, Scott Straus, and Susan Gluck Mezey
Amazon base price: $42.00

Scott Straus is PHENOMENAL
Let us say one thing...Scott Straus is a brilliant man. How do we know this? Scott Straus is our Professor and although we haven't read the book we have complete faith that his brilliance radiates from the work. Once we finish the monstrous amount of reading he assigned in his class we will be sure to read this book and we have no doubt we will enjoy it...and you will too.

An Enlightening Outlook
Scott Strauss and David K. Leonard marvelously delinate the African quagmire with a sense of optomism and honesty. The book boldy breaks down a myriad of preconcieved misconceptions and offers a scholarly aproach that shows the potential for a rebirth of the African continent. Many thanks to these brilliant men.

African Absurdities: Politically Incorrect Articles

Dissecting African Politics with Irony
Hama Tuma's collection of satirical articles would be well classified as funny had they not dealt with serious matters and used satire only as a vehicle to dissect the reality in all its facets. Hama Tuma has once again proved himself an adept and a master of the satire, a quality he proved he had in surplus when he gave us The Case of the Socialist Witchdoctor and Other stories back in 1993 (Heinemann Books). The African survives the grave odds through humor.Hama Tuma is the best example of how this does happen.I strongly recommend Tuma's books to all.

brilliant articles of satire
In African Absurdities,Hama Tuma, the famous Ethiopian writer, has really surpassed himself.Tongue in cheek and with irony and humor as his weapon he dissects the African political scne which he knows so well. You laugh as you read these articles but the serious message does get through. Beyond the African reality, Hams Tuma is commentin on human existence as a whole, on the folly of prejudices and double standards.Kabila never got the chance to romance Monika Lewinsky but you wonder along with Ham what if.The politically incorrect articles in African Absurdities are a great read and I recommend it to all people of all races.
