Caught on The Edges of a Tragedy
I TOTALLY enjoyed this book because it was written in a way that made me feel as if I was actually in New York City on September 11, 2001. The descriptions of the events of those first few days were extremely vivid and easy to imagine. The story moved at a quick pace, just as did the actual events of that horrible day. And, just as none of us could take our eyes off the television on that day, I couldn't stop reading this book until I read the very last page. And, what an ending! Even the strongest will find a patriotic lump forming in their throat.

I believe any person that takes pride in America will find themselves quickly cheering on the two main characters, and then, just as quickly, crying with them out of sheer frustration. The author has a unique and lovely talent for bringing you deeply into the story and making you feel as if you have known the two main characters for years and years. They become your friends!

This is the first and only book I've found that actually tells a story about the 9-11 events, rather than simply a collection of pictures, news headlines and quotations by famous or affected people. It is a refreshing change from the depression and terror we have come to relate to that day. This story, without losing the true panic, fright and terror of the day, somehow makes us smile and feel hopeful about the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center towers.

I loved the book and would venture to say that it will become a part of the mounting pieces of national historical documentation of September 11, 2001. If this isn't on Oprah's book club list, it should be!

Finally, the book is appropriate for high school readers and above. It is a short book at only 126 pages and is written in simple and brief statements. No long and meandering descriptions or theories. Just action, action and action. It is a FUN book about a very sad and tragic topic.

I'd say to every American...buy this book and you will feel your patriotism swell and flourish!

Thank you for reading my review.

Finding A Way Home
On September 11, 2001, tragedies of unspeakable horrors occurred in the United States. Two Midwesterners, on vacation, were in New York City when the Twin Towers were attacked. This book will take you to the day of the attack and the days following, as they tried to return home to Wisconsin.

The writing style will keep you engaged and you will cheer, along with the writer, at each successful milestone during this adventure. You will meet real people along the way and revel in their acts of kindness.

This is a book you won't want to put down until you finish it. It has a wonderful ending that is guaranteed to touch your heart.

Ordinary People on an Extraordinary Day
This book is about two people who were in New York, and were about to go home, on September 11. The book tells how the terrible tragedy of September 11 affected the lives of average travelers.

I liked the book because it is about ordinary people and what happened to them; what these women experienced could have happened to anyone. The best part about this book is that it makes you feel like you were there. You are able to experience what it would have been like to go through the frustration and fear and isolation that surrounded people on September 11 and the days that followed. You meet real New Yorkers who helped others when they themselves were not sure what was happening in their own city.

The author does a good job of describing what happened without being maudlin or overly dramatic. I especially liked the ending.

We've heard a lot about what happened at Ground Zero on 9-11. This is a good book for people who want to know what happened in places other than Ground Zero on this tragic day.

The Real LBJ
In the 500 plus pages of this remarkable trilogy, Billy Lee Brammer does more to explicate and evaluate American politics, especially Texas politics and even more especially, populist politics as practiced by Lyndon B.Johnson, than all the ponderous Caro-type analyses that weigh us down blur the color and cloy the flavor. More than a portrait of LBJ, the book is an artful depiction of the lure of politics and its terrible cost on those who pursue it. All this is conveyed with humor, sympathy and a clear-eyed vision of the American scene of the 60's.

Hot, sexy, historically acurate novel about Texas politics
Written by a former member of President LBJ's staff. It's no secret that Lady Bird Johnson did not like this "too close to home" novel that most say was based in part on her famous husband.

However, the true gem in these pages is an acurate account of the style of Texas politics during this time period. It honestly reflects what life in this arena was like from someone who was there to see it for himself.

When this novel was released, the author Billy Lee Brammer was touted as the next great American writer. That prediction never came true due to the tragedy in the author's own life. We are left with this first work and a wonder of what might have followed had the author's life followed a more positive path.

Newcomers to Texas politics are often told to read The Gay Place if they want to understand Texas politics and a land where politics is best described by the words of former Governor Ann Richards...."IN TEXAS...POLITICS IS A CONTACT SPORT!"

This story tells of a state where men and women most often rise to the top through their intelligence and skill and not their bloodline. It certainly is not a tale of wealthy trust-fund princes who merely walk through doors open by their fathers.

You can feel the humid summer heat of Austin and the sexy passion of it's people as these pages unfold. While this wonderful city has changed dramatically in the past thirty years, you can still find many of the story's locations full of Texas politicos and their groupies. A well written and entertaining novel.

Fabulous reading
A wonderful trilogy. This is a gem of a book, and desrves a much wider audience than it's received to this point (but then, it's only been in print for 37 years). Not only is it a masterful series of short novels about politics, it also does a wonderful job of capturing the feel of a time and place.

Dazzling and fiercely hypnotic
In my short time studying with him, Al Tillson instilled in me a love of this fertile time in history, as well as a love for four pocket cuban shirts. The title may not grab you, but the gripping history and Tillson's flowing narrative style will. Less a book about a specific time in history than it is about all history, it speaks to us universally, and gives us a deeper understanding of what is it to be human.

Written about commonfolk, for commonfolk!
Albert Tillson could have easily written this book solely for the "gentry" of historical society, but instead took the brilliant path of penning this award-winning tome for the rank and file multitude of history buffs who relish the simple, compelling tour of Virginia's colonial commorants. He scrawls out a story so enchanting that I can only describe it as enchanting. Yes, the endnotes get rather long, but if you're like me you'll bask in the hedonism of his note structure and devour eeach of his many sources in the order he so masterfully lists them. Brilliance!

Thorough and outstanding
Dr. Tillson so thoroughly researched Virginia's history for this book that when I finished reading it I felt I could be considered a scholar on Virginia's history. This may seem like a book for graduate students, professors of history, and history-philes, but I am a lowly undergraduate student with an interest in history and appreciated and enjoyed this book. Any questions, comments, or concerns I had about the material while reading the book were answered quickly and thoroughly. If you aren interested in this time period or are taking a class on early America, this is an excellent read.

The Private Thoughts of One of Hitler's Most Trusted!
In 'The Goebbles Diaries, 1942-43,' we are given a glimpse into the mind of Nazi Germany's genius of propaganda and one of Hitler's most trusted lieutenants. These diaries shed light on the Nazis view of Churchill, Stalin and all the other central figures of the era. Goebbels also tells us of the anger he and other leading Nazis felt over the defection of Italy to the allied camp, dealing with the devastating allied air raids, and the fear and anxiety over the revearses on the Eastern front. Unfortunatley, these pages don't give us as clear a view of Hitler as one would hope and passages dealing with the Holocaust are few and far between. In all, Goebbels presents himself as a champion of National Socialist ideals who is loved by Germany and respected by his enemies. What one really sees is the almost ridiculous opptimism that Goebbels held through these years of struggle. It is surprising just how firm was Goebbel's conviction that victory was certain. Those interested in the Third Reich should read Goebbel's diaries as it is a rare look into this troubled time written by one of it's greatest criminals.

Private thinkings of propaganda inventor
Dr. Joseph Goebbels was one of the most influentual and feared persons in the Third Reich. With strong influence on Hitler he managed to control virtually every important activity in the Reich. His diary undoubtably shows an extremely unscrupulous man, prepared to risk anything to achieve his beliefs (the tributes that are usually linked to Machiavelli could find even more proper place here). But he has done his homework well. He brilliantly understood the meaning of propaganda and its real influence on masses and he devised the methods to use it to all extent. We can read from his point of view how he was sailing in the dangerous seas of internal and international affairs and though his style of writing and thinking are not very nice due to his immense mental brutallity, we must admit that he was very succesful at what he was doing. Pure efficiency. It is very nice to learn something about a man who wrote history not so far ago, although it could be deadly for many among us. The understanding of his thought and point of view allows us to see the WWII in somehow another perspective. It must prepare us for actions to prevent such events from happening in the future.

Essential reading for understanding what went on in Germany
I have to say that this isn't a 5-star work because of the writing, the criterion I normally use when dishing out parts of galaxies. It's because I think the book should be read by anyone wanting to gain a glimmer of understanding into what became one of the most powerfully focused minds in the last century. Regardless of the pros and cons of Goebells being allowed to retain even honorary posthumous citizenship of an Earth he seemed bent on destroying, it is enlightening to read the words he set down. Obviously they were never intended to be seen by the likes of you or me, let alone those in power, who later had a chance to peruse them at their leisure. If only the good (sic) doctor had known.

Anyway, following this gentleman of uncertain disposition down the path to what must have been close to madness (he must have had to stave madness off quite madly) and what was, an untimely death (in more ways than one), is an exercise that all students of human nature will finally be glad they chose to do. After all, he was only a man, like you and me, and I think that comes through quite plainly in his own words.

THE GREAT AMERICAN LIE
This book is AWESOME! I'm AMAZED Minister Thorne has the nerve to print such a book as "THE GREAT AMERICAN LIE." God fearing people in the past have been killed for far less. The general public has been blind sidded concerning the vast lies spread by our government and corporate businesses here in the U.S.. It's time to pay the piper and cleanse our country of the vast evil promoted by the INTERNATIONAL BANKERS and other OCCULT groups willing to destroy the unlimited freedoms provided for us by ALL MIGHTY GOD! every American should read this book.

The Great American Lie
...

This book is a small step in undercover investigations which can help us in our decision at who to trust. These kinds of questions have been going on for years, and if one so desires, one can supply answers or opinions which would enlighten or aid us in our decisions. We all must remember that we all go through times when our integrity is in question. Some of us defend ourselves, some of us don't. That's entirely us to each individual. Rick and Rosemary provides a point of view which will help us argue who to trust and what to do.

The book also provides good information on constitutional rights, fallen angels, and an exact projected time for end times per Biblical Scripture. Provided are many quotes from financial leaders as to their intentions or fears. It's a wonderful study.
I totally recommend it.

A solid case for proving biblical prophesy of the endtimes
A must read for those who believe in Jesus Christ and the coming doomsday scenario - for all those of the Jewish faith who know that Jesus is truly the son of God, for all those of the Christian faith who realize that they are righteous in their beliefs - this is the book to understand the conspiratorial nonsense of the government of the U.S. in opposition to the word of what is Real. You will be amazed at the fact-filled treatise and will need to read this tome more than once.

Magnificent !!!
Me as a great lover of Ancient Greek culture & history, I really liked reading this book. When I took it from the shelf in a bookstore in Amsterdam I was with my classmate, when he saw what I had in my hands, the first thing he said was "I guess you just founded your dreambook" And my dreambook it surely was.

On first hand I though that the book would be about the Greek philosophy, but that was a very misplaces thought. In fact the book is so much more wider of scale. It will take everything into the research and tries to explain the Greek thinking not only from of a philopsopcal side (although there is a bog part on that to) but more from of the general idea thoughts. It will tell you what Greek thought about a huge scale of things and topics.

So when you want to get into the mind of an Ancient Greek, and who doesn't !!! (remember that was The reason for Socrates to die, since he was looing forward to meet Hesiod & Homer) Then surely this is your book.

So be a good person and take Machiavelli's advise that a firm knowlegde of our (and then I speak of us Europeans) own Classical inheritage is absolutely crucial in life for true and read this book.

very good
this book is invaluable.
I suggest it to people with no BS in classical studies but with the will to educate themselves.

Greek thought is the cornerstone of the western culture. It is so to speak the 'point of genesis'. Every educated person needs today (irespective of his profession) to have a ground in psychology and sociology in order for him to be an adequate
citizen. Studying this book helps very much in this respect. What the Greeks thought about psyche and society are indespensable today. In fact in clear oposition to the alternative religious
views of these things (jewish, Christian, Mouslim) the Greek
way offers rational answers to the central questions what is psyche and what is society.

This book is a very good *introduction* to greek thought:
treats every contribution to science (all in special
chapters), schools of thought (very thoroughly) and the last part (perhaps the best) is a kind of dictionary which comments
extensively (10-30 pgs) on individual personalities; the chapter
on cynicism is very nice and practically every thought current is covered. I regret that there is no chapter on Demosthenes
(too strange for such a big book).

In opposition to other books this one covers **all** greek thought from -800 to +500 (already inside Byzantine Greek thought); however it covers **only** non-christian Greek thought.

The binding is *excellent*. One complaint though about the paper quality; but this sound as details to a fantastic picture;

buy it and learn; study it and be educated; think about its content and you will become better men!

Excellent coverage of Classical Greek Thought
Jacques Brunschwig's book is heavy reading. This is not to say that the writing is difficult to read but that the book contains so much information that it is physically heavy. At around 1024 pages, this book is an encyclopedia of essays about almost all aspects of Greek philosophy and history. This book was translated from French and it is great that the essays are now available to the english speaking reader. The book is divied into sections such as The Pursuit of Knowledge, Major Figures, and Currents of Thought. This is useful because since it would be nearly impossible to read the book from cover to cover, it allows the reader to find sections that interest them. I read one essay every night. In a little over a month I had a better understanding of Greek philosophy than ever before. The Currents of Thought section is very interesting because it discusses the various philosophies that appeared throughout Greek history. The book not only contains great essays, but beautiful color photographs and pictures as well. This book is a good introduction to Greek philosophy or a reference on the subject. It is an excellent value for the amount of information it contains.

Grow Up America!
Published in Paperback by Living Resources, Inc. (01 October, 2000)
Author: Michael J. Hurd
Amazon base price: $18.95
Average review score:

Finally - The Rational Alternative
It was absolutely wonderful to read a 'self-help' book that was based on rational principles. I've made the mistake of buying some of the most popular self-help books on the shelf and was totally disappointed to find them, at best, full of mundane and obvious advice. At their worst, they offer up suggestions that the universe will provide for you if you believe it will, that you can do anything, regardless of the facts of reality and that just telling yourself how great you are will cause self-esteem.

We all know deep down that none of this is the right advice - it's just the easy advice. Dr Hurd gives the right advice. He teaches us things like what really causes self-esteem, how to examine emotions and put them in their proper perspective, how to love, how to be moral and much, much more. This is a book for the rational thinkers who want to deal with the world in a realistic manner, be responsible for their own lives and achieve their own happiness.

There is also some excellent information on how to help your child grow up, for the parents out there.

This is a book that will challenge you to think rationally and come up with your own solutions, not just hope for a solution from the cosmic universe.

Grow Up America! Every one of us!
Grow Up America! belongs in every home in America. It's candid, direct, concise and to the point. Be responsible for your actions, your feelings and your thoughts! For others? Absolutely not. For you? Absolutely. Dr. Hurd gives a whole different meaning to "selfish" and how putting yourself first dramatically improves the quality of your life. His book is clear, easy to understand, and practical. It's refreshing how he speaks out about issues (that I've only been willing to complain about) with fortitude, backbone, and honesty. His chapter on "Personal Responsibility" really surprised me! I consider myself a very responsible adult (who can't stand when people portray themselves as "victims," helpless, etc.), and he brought to my attention how I was playing a victim by feeling resentful (blaming others). Ouch! So much for the joy of enlightenment. I now realize that if I take care of myself first and choose to be happy in whatever I'm doing, there's no reason for resentment. I've also learned that when feelings of resentment surface (or any negative feelings), and I take responsibility for them, they're neutralized. When I "own" my feelings, the feelings can't own me. Bottom line: Grow Up America! hits the nail on the head: being responsible = being happy. Check it out for yourself! You'll be glad you did.

A rational, solution oriented approach to self improvement
I ordered this book pre-publication directly off of the authors web sight. The book is divided into 24 concise chapters that deal with subjects such as "getting a grip on reality", "emotions", "self confidence,"How to grow up romantically" and many others. The subject matter should be of universal interest to any human being who is seeking to increase their effectiveness as an individual and consequently lead a happier life.

I found that four aspects of this book made it an outstanding read. First, the authors approach emphasizes the power of reason not only in overcoming life's difficulties, but also in living a happy, fulfilling life. Second, the author does an excellent job of explaining how emotions can be an excellent tool from which to gain self understanding IF you analyze them (and act on them) rationally rather than to follow them blindly. Third, I liked the fact that the author is action oriented. He does not believe that a person only needs to sit on a couch and "vent" their feelings in order to achieve personal growth. It takes not only understanding, but actually acting on that understanding. the author makes this very clear. Lastly, I liked the fact that the book is not just a random hodge-podge of invalidated ideas and approaches to self help. It does not present the Ideas in a myopic vacuum. The book presents an integrated approach to the subject matter which brings together many areas of life that (for many) would be seemingly unrelated, and connects them with fundamental principles. I found this to be of great value. In summary, I found this book to be an excellent mental tune up.

Guide to State Legislative Lobbying

Talking to Lawmakers
The Guide shows that speaking to lawmakers is about 10 percent of what it takes to win their votes. It reveals, and shows readers how to do, the other 90 percent of activities that are 'behind the scenes' but make all the difference between winning in the legislature and just talking to lawmakers.

The Ultimate Lobbying Handbook
The Guide to State Legislative Lobbying is a MUST HAVE handbook on the world of lobbying. No other guide exist today that has so much in depth information on the correct form of lobbying state and local government. Your chances of success will greatly increase if you read this book before you lobby a legislative body. If your organization or cause does one thing in it's lobbying plan - READING THIS BOOK SHOULD BE ITEM #1! Bob Guyer is a master lobbyist and great instructor. His experiance is very valuable. Information is the lobbyist best friend - get it, you will be glad you did.

Guyer's on the money
A seasoned pol once said that "Getting the vote is 10 percent access and 90 percent heat."

Frankly, what Bob Guyer's guidebook doesn't teach is what it can't teach - building personal connections with legislators to gain access. For everything else, Bob has written a complete and carefully thoughtout guide to preparing and successfully steering legislation. In other words, bringing the "heat."

He doesn't offer all the answers, since the nuances of each bill and state legislature prohibit a cookie-cutter approach. Instead, Guyer asks, and gets you to ask, the right questions to guide your bill writing, lobbying team organization and strategic plan.

His many years of experience are condensed into a book that reveals the secrets of the temple.

The Guillotine and the Cross

Carroll's Guillotine is Sharp!
This book is well researched, organized, and written, but most of all it is INTERESTING to the highest degree! Read the compelling story of the wonderful Carmelite nuns of Compiegne! Highly recommended!!

From Revolution to Regicide, then to Genocide
A wit once remarked that any fool can make history, but only a great man can write one. I'm happy to say that this book proves Warren Carroll such a man. He covers in detail the start of the revolution proper, with the arrest of King Louis XVI, proceeding through the Terror and its aftermath. His style is gripping, telling history as it is meant to be--a living story of a once-alive past. I was especially glad to see a whole chapter devoted to the uprising in the Vendee; these royalists are rarely heard of in today's textbooks, and I myself had not heard of it until early this year. Carroll covers in detail the suppression of Catholicism, along with the slaughter of priests and the martyrdom of the Carmelite sisters upon the Guillotine.

I would only add that Carroll is an obvious sympathizer with the ancien regime, which may make uncomfortable those accustomed to republican sentiment. His work provokes one to wonder just how the American republic contrasted to the French version. This history proves that Republics are not immune from despots and mass murder.

The TRUTH about the French Revolution
This is a great book. It should be subtitled "The TRUTH about the French Revolution". Full of facts and dates, and heavily footnoted so that sources can be referenced, the author paints an indisputable picture of what the French Revolution really was: a chaotic bloodbath in which the Catholic Church and anyone associated with it was brutally persecuted. Carroll totally discounts the modern myth of the French Revolution as an event that simply brought France from monarchy to democracy, by inundating the reader with facts to the contrary; did you know that one of the first people to die in the guillotine was a newspaper reporter? So much for freedom of the press. My only complaint about this book is that it is so full of facts and dates it made it slow to read because I found myself wanting to take notes! This book is truly a powerful weapon for combatting the myths about the French Revolution. The description of the "field of screams" was chilling. Also disturbing was the scene where the animals pulling the death cart refused to enter the square where the guillotine was, because their senses were so repulsed by the blood-soaked ground.

Brother of Medgar Evers, who was murdered in 1963 in Jackson, Miss., for his civil rights activities, Charles Evers was also an activist in his own right. He succeeded his brother as head of the Mississippi NAACP, and became the first black mayor in Mississippi since Reconstruction. But he was also a complicated, quixotic figure, a man historian David Levering Lewis calls a "holy sinner of the civil rights era." Charles Evers helped finance Medgar Evers's work with profits made running numbers in Chicago and at various times in his life, as he chronicles in this book, made money bootlegging liquor and arranging call girls. Nonetheless, it is moving when Evers calls for an end to hate.
Average review score:

what a book!
while I didn't agree with everything he said in the book I thought he was very honest in writing about his life and about his brother. it's defintley worth reading.

Powerful
Written by Medgar Evers' lesser known brother, this is a powerful account of the civil rights movement in the south by someone who lived it. Order it. Buy it.

Powerful men are rarely so honest -- read it.
Gives a real sense of what it's like to grow up hated, and to learn to hate, and then to painstakingly give up hate. A loving ode to Medgar Evers, and an unflinching look at Charles Evers. Humor, too.
