Touchdown!!
always Been a AFc Fan first&foremost&this Book talks about the Ground Breaking american Conference&the many Players&Folks that Made it&ending up merging with the NFL.as a Buffalo Bills Fan Ralph Wilson had alot to do with the Ground Breaking of the AFL as did Lamar Hunt&of Course Broadway Joe Namith&OJ Simpson amongest others. a Great Read for Football Fans.

my 2 cents for an enjoyable book
Just want to echo what is said below. This is very enjoyable for those interested in the AFL. One deal with it, though, is if you are not that familiar with the AFL players, it may be a bit confusing. There is a guide for who is who, and you can often tell by what they say, whether they were a part owner of the Oilers or something.

One thing that would have been nice would have been more photos, but that may be beyond the scope of the book, as it's not a picture book. But the ones they did include were nice and fairly rare.

Oral histories give us a taste from those who were there, and I really understood the rise of the AFL after reading what Lamar Hunt had in mind in 1959, etc.

Fond trip down Memory Lane
I moved to San Diego the year after they won their AFL Championship and immediately followed this team and the new league. Having followed this team weekly it was interesting to see the historical perspective of this upstart league. I fondly remember collecting the football cards of Jack Kemp, Keith Lincoln, Paul Lowe and Tobin Rote. But this league is more known for it's famous characters such as wrestler Ernie Ladd, Cookie Gilchrist and Joe Namath.

This book allows the players to talk of their experiences, as there are liberal quotes throughout. It tells the story of a poorly financed league that played exciting football that eventually required the conservative, more established NFL to merge. A great example of how upstart the league was is the Miami Dolphins. Ownership was given to Minnesota attorney, Joe Robbie, who struggled to make payroll and among other mismanagement stories, managed to turn the franchise into the only undefeated team ever and make his family a fortune.

Overall, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys football. Players such as Joe Namath and the owners and founders in this league did more than you can imagine turning football into the enjoyable shoot-out now enjoyed by everyone.

Necessary reading
Coincidences? Sure, they happen.
Picture this. I planned a 2500 mile 4-day ride through sUtah, Arizona, and New Mexico. Needed something to read and Ron"s book had just shown up from the publisher, so I threw it in the saddlebag without even opening it.
I finally got to it while parked for the night in a dirty motel in a seedy town in southern Utah. Imagine my surprise when I saw Ron on the cover traveling the same sort of roads I had just been on.
After reading this book, my advice to you is buy it, read it and follow it. If you plan on covering a lot of superslab on your rides, you need this book.
My only complaint (small) is that Dan Kennedy at Whitehorse Press needs to use more color in these books. Some of the scenery in Ron's book deserves to be seen in glorious 4-color.

Wonderful Docu-drama of Gay Life
Not since Armistead Maupin's "Tales of the City" novels have I enjoyed a book that chronicles such a vast spanse of gay and lesbian life. This is the first book I've ever read by Mordden, and man is he fantastic. Beginning in 1949 and ending in the early 1990s he manages not only to capture the pulse beat of gay life over the various years, but even the cadance and dialogue transports you back in time.In it's early sections it's execution reminded me of the film "Far From Heaven" for it's on the nose dialogue and accurate depiction of how gays and lesbians lived in and out of the closet. A wonderful kaleidoscope of characters set amid a variety of backgrounds, the book propels to a simple yet moving climax.

This Book Makes Me Wonder What My Calling Is
I cry every time I read this novel. I become so caught up in its intricate character development, and it's so-true-to life tales of gay history make me long for a place in my own gay history. This book, unlike People in History by Felice Picano that also chronicled 30 years of history, tells a fine tale of love, anger, value and friendshp that pulls us apart and keeps us together. Larken and Walt are my two favorite characters, as they both convey a sense of innocence and deep understanding of the world around them. Also, Frank's time in the stories told were incredible - I wonder at times what my calling is, and will be.

Also, the story of the Kid is fascinating for its depth, in showing that even those men who perform drag for a lifetime still have a life outside of it to lead. This is a top five book for me, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a well told story.

A great gay novel
This is a book to savor. A sweeping, historic story of the American gay experience. The characters are beatiful and their stories are wonderfully told. It is warm, witty and heartbreaking. Already a substantial book, the reader still wishes there were more when the last page appears.

Very useful ironman survival tips
First of all, Going Long is not a rehash of Triathlete's Training Bible. TTB gives you everything you need to prepare yourself physically to get to the starting line. Going Long gives you what you need to get to the finish line.

The book addresses psychological and emotional issues during races, nutrition issues specific to ironman racing, not ironman training, as TTB does, and provides a lot of other useful information, such as race strategies.

Compared to the other offerings available, this is one of the few that provides long distance racers the wisdom and experience of the author's years racing, and can be put to immediate use.

change of heart
At first a lot of the information in this book seemed to be a rehash of "The Triathlete's Training Bible" as stated in my original review. But after reading the book carefully and really pondering what the authors have to say, there does appear to be a lot dedicated toward the art of completing an ironman triathlon. In all fiarness, I must change my review. And if some of the information has been printed in "The Triathlete's Training Bible," at least in this book it is all arranged with one purpose--to finish a full ironman.

First, I must applaud the authors for their inclusion in the introduction. They admit that anyone can finish an Ironman triathlon if they have one thing: will. The down-to-earth tone permiates throughout the entire book.

There are excellent lists for pacing on the bike, mental condition, getting the most from nutrition and the common sense notion that endurance on the bike leg is the most important portion of a successful ironman seems so simple that one does need to constantly remind oneself about it.

Too often triathletes train, train, train, and then train some more. I get sick of hearing about macho-style workouts, and triathlon is just one portion of my life. If you work, have a family, practice toher hobbies, actually give yourself to others, and don't spend every dime you make on triathlon, the philosophies in this book will suit your lifestyle. The authors make a very convincing argument for having three major endurance workouts a week--75 to 100 minutes for the swim, 5 to 6 hours on the bike, and 90 to 150 minutes for the run. Instead of the megablock weekend torture fests that most triathletes brag about, they suggest doing runs in the middle of the week, and the bike on the weekends. All other workouts are secondary to these three. They also suggest that if you cannot find a purpose to a workout, simply leave it out and get more sleep.

If you are preparing to embark on your first ironman or if you are a repeat customer, buy the book. 20 dollars now, might save you hours of wasted training time and minutes (if not hours), and personal suffering in your big race.

It's all here in one little package.
I've been in search of the right Ironman training book for a while. Most regular tri books devote little time to IM training, and others are so complicated they're intimidating (The Triathlete's Training Bible has great information, but I find it really complex.) This gets it right. If you're a nerd like me who likes to understand the logic behind a training program, you can get it here. You can also skim for tips or workouts if you just want to know what to do and when. Especially great is the nutrition section -- Gordo has some very logical, no-hype tips that really work.

Excellent for newbies!
This book started my interest in Endurance way before I became a horse owner.I still refer to it now some three years on .The technical advice is a little dated now however it has a useful section on transport advice. if you can get hold of a copy it is of great use to BBQ/BBF level riders .
