Boomerang Joy: Joy That Goes Around, Comes Around 25 Devotions

Used price: $6.97

"The game of life is a boomerang," says the optimistic author Barbara Johnson in Boomerang Joy, a collection of 60 brief devotional essays. Johnson contends that our thoughts, deeds, and words return to us sooner or later with astounding accuracy. If you initiate joy, if you learn to "fling a smile a mile," Johnson promises that the happiness you send out will return to you "more accurately each time you toss it out." Johnson's writing style occasionally falls into Pollyanna chattiness, but, overall, fans find her narrative warm and inspiring, as she tells humorous anecdotes and testifies to the power of boomerang joy and Christian prayer. Topics for devotionals include: "Unquenchable Grins," "Love More and Regret Less," "Nestle, Don't Wrestle," "Power in Forgiveness," and "Fling Out Jesus' Joy." --Gail Hudson

Great motivator!
I picked this journal up for a friend for Christmas. When I got home I was thumbing through it and wanted to keep it for myself. She loved the journal. It has great opening lines to get you to think about what is really important. She is uplifting and lighthearted and most of all funny. Now I am ordering one for myself.

A REAL JOY TO READ!!
Wow - A real affirmation that life is attitude and attitude is a choice no matter what happens. As Barbara says "Pain is inevitable but misery is optional"

Everything you wanted to know about the movie
This commemorative book, published in 1992, certainly does its job of commemorating the movie Casablanca. It's a slender book with tons of photos of the actors, sets, and posters from the movie, and packed with everything you seemingly would want to know about it.

You find out about what led to Casablanca's production, its inspiration, how the actors were chosen, the history occurring at the time that helped it along, the quarrels on set, the difficulties with budget and timing, the process for coming up with the ending of the movie. You learn about the director's accent and odd way of speaking that sometimes confused everyone. (When he asked for a "poodle" and such a dog was brought, he angrily tried to clarify that what he wanted was a "puddle". ) You learn about Bogart's standoffishness to Ingrid Bergman, and Peter Lorre's continual playing of practical jokes on the cast. There's a bio about each actor, and how the movie affected his or her career, and a listing of movies that were intended copies or spinoffs. This is a great book if you love Casablanca, its actors, or want to know about moviemaking of that era.

Can there really be better?
"Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine." Unrequittted love? No one knows it better than Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart. Paris, Casablanca, does it matter where love meets up again? Reality intrudes, and makes these two face facts. This is the ultimate love story of the century. What this world truly means. Unrequited love, and our responsibility to everyone else. "Fall in love all over again." And I always thought that quote was so corny. Until I saw this. Watch this. You'll really fall in love with Ingrid and Humphrey, and cry at their nobility and their own love. And what they'll do for love. See it. Understand it. There is nothing better.

Corduroy Goes to the Doctor
This is an excellent book to prepare your child before going to the doctor. Many children are afraid of the unexpected. Being in the medical field, I find that children who are prepared beforehand do better. This book describes Corduroy's day at the doctor. It gives vivid pictures of him entering the office, being weighed, and having his throat and ears examined. It also shows the doctor listening to Corduroy's heart while giving him breathing instructions! At the end Corduroy gets a shot as the doctor explains, "We don't want you to get sick." My daughter (age 3) is great at the doctor's office and I really owe a lot to it to Corduroy! My daughter loves Corduroy!

A very helpful book
This short and simple book has been very helpful to me. My 1 year old son has to go to the doctor VERY OFTEN for ear infections. He seems to relate well to seeing what Corduroy does there, and we talk about when he does to the doctor and they do those things. I think it would be helpful to explain to children who don't have to go often as well, in knowing what to expect. The pictures are great, and the words are simple and to the point for young children.

Curious George steals the show.
I have loved Curious George ever since I was a child. The adorable monkey and the man in the yellow hat take a trip to the aquarium in this book. Despite the fact that the man with the yellow hat has no responsibility when it comes to looking after a mischevious little monkey, Curious George redeems himself and is forgiven for his antics when he makes makes the fin and flipper show the best aquarium visitors have ever seen.
Rey and Shalleck present a fantastic story for readers of all ages. It caters to the curiosity and adventure every child faces. I shared this book with 16 preshoolers during storytime at a local library. They loved it and I enjoyed reading it to them. The plot is simple, the characters are adorable and heartwarming. Curious George stories are always charming and enchanting. The illustrations, though dated, are colorful and appealing. The stories are adapted from a series of films. Though I have never seen the films, I know the stories are timeless and wonderful. Curious George deserves a place in every book lovers collection and belongs on every family bookshelf.

Curious George Is Great
Once again Curious George is his same old self at the aquarium. This time his mischeif gets him involved with other animals and they have a grand time.

george is wonderful
George is good to read after an exasperating day with your toddler or preschooler. It reminds you that it could be worse, you could REALLY have a monkey to care for, and your monkeys don't really mean to get into mischief, they are just very very curiouus.

Just as good as the original stories
To date my daughter has been reading the "Curious George" books that belonged to my husband when he was a child. I was a little skeptical that the newly written stories would capture the same spirit as those written more than 30 years ago. However, my daughter absolutely loved it especially as both the storyline and the illustrations were more detailed than usual and made it fun for her to point out different things and extend into a discussion with us about beaches, lifesaving etc. Like her other "George" books she has reread this one over and over.

Mayhem at the Mall
Sit down and have a cuppa with Jenny Turnbull, Promotions Director of a megamall. Wise for her thirtysome years, she's galvanized into action when an unseen gunman opens fire in the Food Court and kills two innocent people. Even if she solves the murders, what will she do with all those pumpkins and the eight-foot rabbits? To top it off, Santa has quit. First novelist Jessica Burton has a winner with her wry and capable amateur sleuth Jenny. A background in the shopping centre inidustry has given Jessica a thorough education in the basics of running a mall. If anything can happen in this microcosm under a metal roof, it does, from a disgruntled man who demands a new pair of shoes, to shoplifters and drug dealers, to rotten city politics. From the start, her voice pulls the reader into the business of juggling chaos between holidays: "When the shoe hit my desk, I was head down and counting elves, so I just reached out and swept it off." Minutes later bullets strafe the Food Court, and Jenny's directing traffic like a bat out of heaven. "Send the rabbit over," she says, arranging for screens from the Blood Donor Clinic to quell the crowd's panic, Not long after, she's sitting in a rocker with her feet propped up and her knitting needles clicking along like a freight train. Her "left knee had a bag of frozen corn niblets across it, and the label on the designer pouch covering the right one said 'Peaches and Cream, Flash Frozen.'" Jenny's in her element solving crimes. From her nerve centre office, aided by her roommate and psychic sister, Helen Lemieux, Mall Security Chief, quick with a quip but full of common sense, and Tiny, a giant itinerant worker with a heart as big as his biceps, she puts herself on the firing line to make the Rosewood Centre safe for humanity.

A rousing first effort!
Jessica Burton has an interesting resume. Born in Scotland, she has lived all over the world, as her father worked for the British airline for six years. She emigrated to Canada, completed her schooling, and worked in the newspaper industry, followed by the shopping centre industry. She presently lives in Brampton, Ontario.

Jenny Turnbull is the promotion director of Rosewood Centre. Her job revolves around planning holiday festivities, handling disgruntled customers, and keeping the public relations on a smooth plane. She handles her job with panache, and everyone loves her, as she has the answer to almost every problem which presents itself. That is, until someone murders three diners in the middle of the food court during a Halloween celebration. Jenny is an inveterate knitter, and one of the casualties is a good friend who ran the wool store:

"'She was such a nice person and so helpful.' I couldn't let it go. 'I was just in her store yesterday to see if the rest of my wool was in yet, this new stuff she put me on to. How can I be talking to her one day, and she's dead the next? She was going to order me a particular shade of green they've just introduced. I really need that colour now I've changed my whole pattern around.'"

Death Goes Shopping is an exquisitely written tale of two roommates caught up in a murder that appears to be a senseless act on the surface. But Jenny, armed with a sense of humor that will keep the reader laughing and engaged, and her security guard roommate, Helen, eventually put the pieces together to solve an intricate puzzle. Burton does a great job with her premier mystery, and Jenny is a lovable heroine who blithely traipses through the world with lots of energy, enthusiasm, and wisdom.

Jessica Burton's knowledge of both the newspaper business and the shopping centre business lend credence to her tale. She truly writes what she knows, and her realm of expertise is interesting and provides a scenic landscape for her tale. Her main characters are sweet and well-rounded, and their side escapades complete the tale. Burton even works in some Scottish fairy dust for the reader's pleasure. A rousing first effort!

This is a wonderful book for young children and their parents. It tells the story of one little hermit crab who gets too big for his shell. Your kids will have you reading this one over and over again until they know it by heart.

My mother bought this book some time ago to read to my son while he was visiting, and he has since fallen in love with it. The book follows Permit Drab the Hermit Crab as he looks for a new home. His shell has gotten too small for him, and his task is to find one that will be comfortable enough for him to live in. My Son Loves This Book
My two-year-old absolutely loves this book. We read it every night. He's the kind of kid who won't let anyone look in his mouth or ears. Now he wants me to look in his mouth and ears like the doctor does to Elmo. For extra fun I use a penlight to get a better look. I'm taking this book with me to his next doctor's appointment.

Oooh, I'm so tired of this book, but my kids love it!
And isn't that the measure of a great toddler book? We have read this book over and over and over. It not only entertains my 2-year-old twins, it helps them anticipate what to expect when they go to the doctor. They like it so much that they can now 'read' it to each other, as they know whole pages by heart. Thumbs up!

A Great Book for Relationships Neophytes and Veterans
I highly recommend this book for ANYONE considering getting into a relationship, already in a relationship or recovering from a failed relationship. Not only does it comprehensively explore issues and problems in relationships, it clearly defines what exactly "love" is and what it truly means to love someone; for it is more than an emotion, it is consistency, deed and action. This book not only helps you learn about your own personality and character flaws, it shows you how to recognize them in others and how to transform your own personal shortcomings into proactive, productive approaches internally and within the context of a healthy relationship. There is such a thing as "false love." Where do you stand?

Breaks False Illusions many have about Relationships
Great material, should be taught in the Public School systems accross America. They breakdown the many Illusions held by men and women about Relationships and introduce ways to create REAL lasting Monogamous healthy Love.
