Dragoo is a hit!
This book is a great read. It has themes that relate important attributes for children. The pictures are delightful. Kids love it. You can't lose with this charming story.

Love this book!
My kids love this book, and want it read to them over and over (though they know most of the words themselves by now). Thanks to the authors for this cheerful, loving little book.

A delightful children's book for the young & young at heart
Dragoo Goes Pop! is a fun little story about a tender-hearted dragon and the townsfolk of a small imaginary town who suffers a hard drought. Just when the everyone was ready to give up...Dragoo puts on his creative thinking cap and solves the town's problems! It is a lovely book to talk about perserverance, kindness towards others who are different and from a science perspective-a good starting point for a discussion of weather and droughts! Great for the dragon lover on your list, too!

Amazing work of art
That Younghill Kang's book, critically acclaimed during his own lifetime, has been rediscovered and reprinted decades later is a victory for American literature. I am a student at Northwestern University and I read this book for an Asian American literature class that I took on a whim. Though I rarely glance at class books during vacation (even the good ones) I have re-read this one twice. East Goes West is a beautifully written novel that manages to be both powerfully thought-evoking and humorous. Kang's commentary on the uniqueness of American culture, politics, business, and society remain as fresh and valid as they were sixty years ago. The genius of this book is that it makes you think while being amused. If you've always wanted to find hidden treasure, this book comes pretty close. Do yourself a favor and read this book!

East goes West
This is an excellent book for anyone who would like to know how Koreans in early 1900 had lived in America. It is a story of exiles living in the U. S. waiting to return to Korea someday knowing then that it was an impossible dream. In his book I met many people I had heard of or read about. Mr. Younghill Kang, who is a friend of my remote aunt, is indeed a true poet.

Recently republished, East Goes West deserves rediscovery.
One of the first works of fiction written by an Asian immigrant to the United States, Kang's novel describes his early adulthood with a poignant humor that touches not only on his most positive experiences in a new country--such as being befriended by other Korean Americans--but also on some of his worst: the time when college classmates convinced him to run a race in long underwear. Kang, however, never forces us to feel sorry for him; simply by relating his experiences to us in a uniquely crafted language that reflects both his extensive literary training and his own quirky sense of style, Kang manages to win our sympathy for an obviously gifted young man who faces discrimination and hardship during his first years away from home

great resource for teachers
This is an excellent book for teachers to have- can work with prediction (what will happen next?) and creative writing (older students may write their own "text" for the illustrations).

Beautiful illustrations and very humorous!

frog goes to dinner
Clever story, clearly told with pictures alone. Great for young children to enjoy with adults or by themselves.

If looks could kill.....
The book is as enjoyable when you're 33 as when your 3. I was cleaning a closet and found my original version from '77 and had to sit down (or fall down laughing) to "read" it. The illustrations are definately worth more than a thousand words. Frog's good time is only deterred by the evil looks cast at him by the family. We've all been there. It is amazing the feeling that animation can evoke. "Oh to be that frog".....After enjoying it to the fullest I ordered it for all the kids on my Christmas list from 2 to 102 that I felt would appreciate it. And of course Amazon delivered them on time.

A fUNNY AND hOLLYWOODARIFIC Garfield TV Special!
A very funny Garfield TV Special! When Garfield and his pals Jon and Odie win a pet show they go to Hollywood for a really tough competion!

Far better than the show was
I read this book at my cousin's house when I was eight years old, and never forgot it. It made a Garfield fan out of me. The plot, characters (which were new to me at the time) and funny drawings all appealed strongly to me.

great.
Words cannot convey my feelings for this book

Hermy the Hermit Crab Goes Shopping

My Favorite Crab Story Ever!
I really enjoyed this book! What makes it even more special is that I got to visit with the author, Andie Weathers, at Christmas time. She graciosly spent the time discussing the whole process of writing and publishing a book. I highly recommend this picture book for any child who wants to learn about sea life and Charleston, South Carolina!...I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot from it. I look forward to Andie's next book!

Hermy is a Hit!
This beautifully illustrated book is an engaging tale about a little hermit crab that travels to various real-life destinations looking for a new shell (because Hermy has outgrown his old shell). Like most children, my kids (ages 8, 6 and 4) love the beach, and they were captivated by the Hermy story and illustrations. The main character is a hermit crab, but the cast of characters includes some other ocean favorites, such as a sand dollar and a sea horse. The lighthouse and shipwreck captured my son's attention. The innovative format includes a map of Hermy's journey, and an informative "Hermy's Beachside Glossary" that answered many questions that my children had. There is also a detailed write-up of the biology of the hermit crab included at the end, which provided enrichment for my 8-year-old and me! My children are avid readers and it is often difficult to find new books that capture their attention---Hermy the Hermit Crab was a welcome, rare find. We have given this book to other kids for a birthay present, and it was a winner.

Hermy is Awesome!!
The book is well written for children of all ages. It is a wonderful lesson about the creatures of the sea. While it captures the true essence of the sea life of the South Carolina coast, it is a book that anyone across the country will enjoy and relate to.

However, it is the incredible illustrations that make the book come to life. The animated creatures appear human-like but do not lose their sea creature-like quality. The vivid colors and attention to detail will capture the attention of the reader (young or old) for hours.

Mesmerizing!
The greatest thing to come out since the Musical itself, Wonderful, educational, fantastic reproductions of the 19th century musicals!

The great song composers and lyricists are presented
Richard Fawkes' The History Of The Musical is a flawlessly recorded, 4 cassette, unabridged audiobook showcasing the development of the musical, from its origins in European light opera and operetta to its it's golden age in the American theater. The great song composers and lyricists are presented including Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, Lloyd Webber, and Sondheim. The wonderfully narrated text by the award-winning Broadway singer Kim Criswell is enhanced with almost one hundred famous musical extracts. The History Of The Musical is a "must" for personal, academic, and community library music history and audiobook collections.

Should be twice as long
Surely there must be a medal somewhere out there for Naxos records and for author Richard Fawkes. After two superb sets of tapes and CDs titled "The History of Classical Music" and "The History of Opera," there is now available Mr. Fawkes' "The History of the Musical" (NA422712). Here we have singer/actress Kim Criswell narrating on 4 CDs or tapes just under 320 minutes of exactly what the title promises.

Starting with "The Beggar's Opera" of 1728, the history of the genre is traced up to the time of writing, meaning "Les Miserables." Along the way, we consider operetta, the English Music Hall, American vaudeville, the review, the book show, the familiar, the off-beat, the dead ends, the highly influential. And the London stage gets a good deal of attention also, thereby introducing a lot of material not very well known to those better versed in the American musical.

As with any good effort of this sort, a strong connection is drawn between the changing times and the changing concepts of what a musical should be. The importance of "Show Boat" is not glossed over, for example, nor is the other shock caused by "Pal Joey." The reliance of Lloyd Webber on staging is mentioned but not his lack of more than one fairly memorable melody per show. In general, the tone is upbeat and positive.

But this is a recording. While it could never include all the information found in a book, its dozens of recorded examples are what makes this set priceless. Where possible, the oldest "original cast" recordings are used. On the other hand, there are some strange exceptions such as "Hey there" from "Pajama Game" being sung not by John Raitt but by Ron Raines on the Jay recording. I suspect this is because Criswell is in the cast of that set.

Again, this set is in tape and CD formats. For educational purposes, the CDs offer direct access to any show under discussion--and the CDs are very generously divided into nearly 200 tracks! Very considerate of the producers. The booklet offers a nice little personal essay by Criswell. So if I have any complaint about this set, it is that I wish it were twice as long.

Wiggling his way into your heart!
I. Q. is the pet rat of Mrs. Furber's class. But he longs to be much more. Along with the children, he is learning to count and spell. He has learned his colors, participated in the Thanksgiving play (a small role) and crafted Valentines. But the school year is soon ending and still I.Q. has not been named Student of the Week. What can he do to get Mrs. Furber's attention?

I.Q. wiggles his way into readers' hearts, and the book's illustrations delightfully document the goings-on of a classroom throughout the seasons.

I.Q. Goes To School
This book was a joy to read! My second grader loved the story as it goes through the whole year with events relating to what she has learned in school this year. I.Q. is adorable as he wants to become a student not just the class pet. I.Q. learns about the alphabet, colors, numbers and holidays along with students. But more than anything, I.Q. wants to be picked for STUDENT OF THE WEEK. When will it be his turn? This book is a great read and it will surely be a favorite with your children as it is with mine.

Great read aloud for first grade
Every first grade class will enjoy this joyful trip through the school year. This fits month by month with the first grade curriculum. I.Q. will be a welcome pet and student that children can relate to. This book is a joy to read and share.

If the War Goes on -: Reflections on War and Politics

Superbly translated essays and letters
This volume covers the period from September 1914 to 1948, and consists of essays and other writings on war and Hesse's reactions to it. I was surprised how what he said resonated with me--filled with opposition to German militarism and detestion of the Nazi horror. I was again reminded of Hesse's greatness, and I don't see how the language of the translation could be better. I was greatly moved by the proof that there were good Germans who cringed in pain as they watched the slide to Hitlerian madness. There are 25 separate pieces and I am glad I own this book, so I can refer to them again and again.

For Hesse Fans and Pacifists Too
What is it like to be a famous German novelist living in Switzerland during World War II? Innumerable Germans at their wits' end would write Hermann Hesse hoping that somehow he could help them. In this collection of short pieces, Hesse shows that the best way he knew to achieve peace was to use his pen.

It is worth getting your hands on this book just in order to read "The European," which reminds us that philosophy must above all be practical.

"If the War Goes On" still has me thinking after 20 years...
Hermann Hesse's "If the War Goes On" is different from many of his other books because rather than fiction, it is a book of short essays. The one which still stands out in my mind after 20-plus years is entitled, "The European". The book is worth reading. Hesse was, if I recall correctly, a pacificist whose nationality happened to be German, at a time when war was going on in Europe. The title of the book seems to reflect both the external political cirumstances of the time in which he was writing, but also, and perhaps mainly, conditions of conflict inside people. It is evident from biographies of Hesse that he struggled alot and documented this in his writing. It's time for me to re-read this incredible book.

Delightful book with wonderful illustrations
I have read this story to several young children, who are entranced by the adventures of this adventuresome iguana and his good friend, the frog. Every time I read it I am entranced by the delightful illustrations -- especially the expressions on the faces of Irving & Freddy, as well as the backgrounds that go from tropical rainforest to Himalayan-type peaks to skyscraper-clogged cities. So the book rates high for both kids & the people who have to read a favorite book over and over and over.

Grandchildren throughly enjoyed the book.
Purchased this book for a 5 year old. He was able to read the story line which he found very interesting as his school has a pet Iguana. The illustrations were beautifully done. Five stars

"I don't know much about childrens books, but I do know about art. And the illustrations that Dorri Olds has created for 'Irving Goes to Town' are delightful eye candy for kids of any age. The pictures carry a narrative line that would be attractive even to people that can't read yet!" --Paul H-O Art critc, Artnet.com Director, galleryBeat Television

JOE BOB GOES BACK TO THE DRIVE-IN

He's Back!!!
Hilarious reviews of B-Movies done in Joe Bob's initimable style - guaranteed to make you laugh out loud.

Not for the sexually repressed (he often rates movies by the number of "boobs" that are visible), this series of reviews from the Movie Channel's "Drive In Theatre" host's syndicated newspaper column preaches the Drive-In gospel.

Actually, the author is a very sharp man who realized the way to get maximum attention was to adopt a beer guzzling, trailer park living Good Ol' Boy White Trash persona.

The funniest film reviews I've ever read - get this and his first book of reviews "Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-In" (what/where else?!)

JOE BOB'S TRIUMPHANT RETURN!
Joe Bob's second (to date) collection of drive-in movie reviews is equally as funny as his first. He picks up from the infamous "We Are the Weird" column, which got him tossed off the Dallas Slimes-Herald and out of the El Lay Slimes Syndicate, then goes into his next weekly column (he was picked up by Universal Press Syndicate without ever missing a column). The reviews are often far more entertaining than the films, and his hilarious slice-o'-life segments are some of the best humor pieces out there. This one's a real winner for drive-in fans and people who just like to LAUGH alike!

HILARIOUS
Joe Bob Briggs is an awesome character. His reviews of "B" movies are usually dead-on accurate and to the point. (He is the only critic next to Ebert that isn't ashamed to like so-called "trashy" flicks. Ths collection of reviews from his newspaper columns is a must read for fans of good ol' drive-in type movies. It also contains Briggs' hysterical monologues on life in Grapevine, TX , as well as his opinions on life.
