Sally can't wait. This affable black Lab and her human pal (appearing only occasionally as a partially offstage arm or lap) are going camping in the mountains. She's read all about the animals up there--rabbits, bears, moose, owls, beavers, skunks--and is itching to get to know each and every one. They load up the van with gear and plenty of dog food, and Sally snuggles down to sleep for the long ride, while visions of songbirds and berry-munching bears dance in her head. This irresistible canine is well acquainted with road trips after her earlier trip to the beach (Sally Goes to the Beach). Dog lovers especially will be amused by Sally's innocent ramblings and her dreamy fixation on food. Internationally acclaimed artist Stephen Huneck creates fantastic hand-carved woodblock prints of the stocky Lab (who also starred in his My Dog's Brain) and miscellaneous mountain critters, creating the kind of art that will linger long in a reader's memory. A book for any age!
Sally Goes to the Mountains is a book I would give as a gift to any dog lover from 4 to 94. It's colorful illustrations, charming and witty captions, subject matter and size makes it the perfect coffee table book. I'll cherish mine forever. I can't wait for the next "Sally" book and plan to visit the huneck.com website to choose a special framed print from this very special book.

With bright, superbly crafted woodcut prints
In Sally Goes To The Mountains, author/illustrator Stephen Huneck draws upon his award-winning expertise to take young readers on a romp with a fun-loving black Labrador named Sally. Sally goes for a ride to the mountains where she encounters bears, moose, rabbits, and skunks! There are berries to pick, sticks to fetch, and a lake to swim in. Huneck's bright, superbly crafted woodcut prints perfectly capture the joy of a dog's outing in the mountains for young readers. Also highly recommended is the earlier volume of Sally's adventures, Sally Goes To The Beach (0810941864, [price]).

A must have for Huneck fans and animal lovers.
I bought this book for my mom as a present. She already owns the other "Sally" books and loved this one too. The illustrations are beautiful and very whitty. My favorite is the giant moose with Sally. The Sally books aren't just for Lab owners or children--any pet lover will enjoy them.

Spot may be a little shy when he starts his first day of school, but by the end of the day he's on a roll! This pudgy brown-spotted pup and his new friends, Clare the turtle, Tom the alligator, Helen the hippo, and Steve the monkey, share in show-and-tell, spell words with blocks, sing, and paint pictures. Spot's verdict on school? "Great!" Preschoolers and new scholars will love to lift the flaps in this small square board book to see just what kind of fun Spot is having. Available for the first time in an interactive lift-the-flap format, this charming little book will reassure nervous first-time students as they see that school is a place of friends, learning, and fun. Fans of Eric Hill's many other Spot titles (Good Night, Spot, Spot Goes to the Farm, and tons more) will welcome this new edition of an old favorite. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

4 1/2* Spot¿s First Day at School!
Spot discovers that school is fun and interesting in this flap book by Eric Hill. After a warm greeting by his teacher and classmates, Spot hides (under one of the flaps found on every page) when it's time to sing a song. "I can't sing," he says. There is no resolution to this (maybe some pages were torn out of my copy?), but 4 1/2* Spot soon finds plenty to do as the disjointed plot reveals Spot's fun activities at school. Theses include finding dress-up clothes in a small playhouse, spelling the word 'DOG" with blocks, story time by the teacher, playing teeter-totter (Spot is cleverly hidden under a flap that is part of a tree), and painting paw prints. When his mom picks him up and asks, "How was school, Spot?" he answers with a resounding "Great!" 22 brightly colored pages showing Spot enjoying school after some initial uncertainty.

A fun book to share with your toddler
Spot the Dog books are a favourite with my girls. They love the simple stories that they can relate to (hiding, baking a cake, playing with others etc) and the lift-the-flaps always bring screams of delight even though we've read them many many times. As they grow I'm sure they'll be one of the books they learn to read with. The words are simple and the font easy to read. Lovely books to cuddle up with your children on your lap. They are also big enough to hold up and read to them as they sit in back seat on car trips.

Gift for My Grandson
I feel in love with "Spot Goes to School" and will be reading it to my grandson when he gets old enough to read.He is only six months old but I am stocking up now. The illustrations are really cute and on every page there is something that easily "opens" to reveal something underneath. What an adorable book to prepare a child for going to nursery school etc.!

Fantastic!
My nine-month-old daughter LOVES Spot Goes to the Farm. She can lift all the flaps by herself. We love the board book edition -- it's so sturdy! This book is just plain fun! I can't recommend it enough!

The best Spot book ever!
My baby and I love this Spot Lift the Flap book. Only this one and Where Is Spot is in this sturdy board addition. The farm animals are so cute! Spot goes out looking for baby animals and finds some pigglets and kittens. My favorite page is Spot in the duck pond looking for Duckling. My baby loves to lift-the-flaps and this book calms her down when she is fussy. One of the all time best baby books on the market to me!

Kenan and Kel, Aw Here it Goes
Kenan and Kel is a great book for kids because it made me laugh and it's comical. This book is about two teenagers, Kenan and Kel. No matter what the situation is, they're always having accidents that develops into trouble. Kenan is the calm one and Kel is the out giong, clueless, and hyper one. Together they have more accidents than anyone. This book is a novel based on a Nickelodeon T.V. show. The author of this book is Steve Freeman and he has written many books that you also can enjoy!

It'z Da BOMB!!!!!
Kenan and Kel are the best anyone who is looking for comedy, drama, and want to know what a schemin teen is all about should read this book.

Just like the T.V. series Kenan and Kel, very well done.

Baby Bear Goes to the Zoo

Award winner for illustrations
Baby Bear is a lovely, lively story for the very young. It is filled with bright, happy pictures that often escape a little from their borders, and the story is fun and repetitive. If children fall in love with Baby Bear, there's a whole series of books about his adventures.

This book won the Crichton Award for new Australian illustrators in 2000.

Wonderful for all ages
My daughter is 18 months and loves this book. She loves animals and the pictures are colorful and simple enough for her. It flows quickly to keep her attention at this age. When she starts to read it will be a perfect starter book. Broekstra's other book, "Baby Bear Goes to the Beach" is also very good.

Baby Bear a Hit with My Daughter
This book is wonderfully illustrated. The images leap off the page to delight readers young and old. My daughter has memorized Baby Bear's journey through the zoo where he visits zebras, monkeys, and an elephant or two. While looking at the animals, a beautiful butterfly distracts the young bear and he runs after it only to find that he has run too far and can't find his mother. He runs to the calls of "Baby Bear, Baby Bear" each time he hears it only to discover that there are a lot of other baby bears in the world. He finally hears his own mother calling and his journey ends with a hug. The way it should be.

This is an excellent counseling tool for troubled youth
Buddy Goes to Canterbury Camp is an exceptional novel about a teenage boy faced with tremendous pressure to choose a path tainted toward destruction or a path of positive change.

During the course of the story, Buddy is sent to live with an older couple who are the owners of Canterbury Camp. The couple demonstrates unconditional love toward Buddy and the other teenage boys who live at the camp; thus cultivating an atmosphere of inner healing and revitalization of broken hearts and spirits. Buddy and the other teenage boys are given a second chance at their lives, while incorporating positive character changes.

The author stresses intergrity a great deal in her book, and the importance of developing a sense of overall purpose for one's life which is essential for the main character to develop.

I applaud Ms. Jones for writing such a brilliant piece of work at such a time as this; youth today need guidance and character keys such as intergrity that will enable them to become future leaders of tomorrow equipped with strong moral and personal values.

My desire is to see this book at every grade school and high school across the country as a counseling tool to help troubled youth. This book is a necessary counseling tool and if you are a counsellor like myself whether in the field of law or social work or teaching . . . "Buddy Goes to Canterbury Camp" would provide and answer countless questions that one might have on the topic of troubled youth.

This is a masterpiece -- we should all hope for a sequel.

Excellent tool for instilling integrity into today's youth
After reading this book, I believe the author has hit upon something that has been overlooked in today's youth. Every parent should read this book along with their child. It is excellent for teaching youths integrity and instilling principles that will last a life-time. In light of all the school shootings in this country, I believe what is taught in this book will help prevent such events from happening again. If we teach kids to love themselves, then they are less likely to get involved in self-destructive behavior.

a book every mother and child should read
Buddy Goes To CanterBury Camp is an exceptional book which should and must be read by both parentand children. It is a counseling tool that help parents understand what is inside of their children. Thanks for writing such a great book.

Cow Adventurer
Cappuccina is a spunky cow who longs to take a day off from the farm and visit the nearby town. While in town she tries to buy shoes, a dress and have her hair down. Since she is a cow, none of this works out for her. After a pleasant but tiring day, Cappuccina is glad to head back home with a bow on her tail. An upbeat picture book with great illustrations.

Wonderful Children's Book
A beautifully written and illustrated children's book. I was lucky enough to meet Mary Ann Smith and witness a reading in front of a group of children whose imaginations were held captive by this lovely story and woman.
This is a book that should be part of every childs library. I look forward to the next adventure!

The best children's book I've written to date.
Just want readers to know how much fun my mother and I had writing this book - and reading the manuscript to hundreds of elementary school children along the way. They get credit for letting us know how much fun it is for kids to chime in on the "Bloooooooos" in Cappuccina. And they get credit for giving us lots of ideas about where Cappuccina should go next! New York? The Army? The Moon? Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, fyi, Mary Ann Smith, my mother and co-author is NOT the Mary Ann Smith you have listed as author of other books you are recommending. Cappuccina is MY Mary Ann's first published work.

Best, Katie Smith Milway

"And the Winner Is. . ."
Sock Monkey has just received an invitation to the Oswald Awards as a nominee for Best Supporting Toy. The invitation states that "Nominees must be clean" which creates a dilemma for Sock Monkey since he is a very active toy and has never taken a bath. Anyone who has ever thought of clean as a necessary evil can relate to this story as Sock Monkey's thoughts turn to "The stinky soap! The icy water! The scratchy towels!" He's sure he will be left blotchy, lumpy, and shrunken, but his friends come to the rescue. During the cleaning process, the text uses sounds effectively through alliteration and consonance which add to the reader's and listener's enjoyment--"Simian Springs, Mystical Monkey Mountains, perfectly pure Lilypad Pond, and Sahara Sands." This book follows the typical award show format, and the reader can smile along with the idea of triumphant toys receiving awards as well as feel the disappointment of the losers. Older readers may pick up on the humor or the toys' movie titles (Teddy Bear in Kids, I Shrunk the Honey or Baby Doll in Charlotte's Wet) while the illustrations add to the fun by their portrayal of the characters in the cartoon-like simplicity with which they are drawn. Although the illustrations are elementary in design, the strong colors draw the eye and add to the story line. The sock monkey toy may be unknown to a young reader, but his depiction (complete with sock texture) helps familiarize and endear the reader to him. The conclusion of the book is the only detriment in that it seems somewhat contrived and abrupt, but overall, I feel this book is an excellent first effort.

You too will love Sock Monkey
This book is hilarious. Lured by Sock Monkey's jaunty stance and knowingly vacant gaze, I had to stop and read it cover to cover, hogging up the aisle at the bookstore and smirking aloud to myself. That Sock Monkey is a charmer. Cleverly written and illustrated, with a sly wit appealing to any age (although, the ending was a little abrupt), I bought it for my niece, but am tempted to keep it for myself. You must read Sock Monkey. You must enjoy Sock Monkey's socky hilarity for yourself. You must bring Sock Monkey home with you.

Unique and Entertaining
This book has a fresh unique style of illustration and story telling! It is precious. Fun for adults and children, we can only hope for many more Sock Monkey adventures.

Wonderful!
This book was one of my favorites. It came full of surprises, and belly-aching laughs. One of my fave issues in this book was when Liz tries smoking. It was a very realistic issue which I felt many could actually relate to. I definitely recommend this book to whoever wants laughs and a couple of sympathetic tears.

One of the best FBorFW Collection
I've always read FBorFW in the newspaper, but didn't quite get into the spirit of the collections till a couple years earlier. I'm glad I got absorbed into it. While I love the other comic strips out there, I like the ones where the character age with time. FBorFW is definitely that kind of strips.

It was really an joy to see all the character develop over time. The Patterson family really portray a "normal" family. While I adore them, with the exception of April in some cases, I really wished Lynn would make a separate collection for the supporting characters. Especially Lawrence, Gordon, Brian, and Weed. I really like this collection especially because of Lawrence.

Lawrence, one of Michael's best friend, is revealed to be something no one would have guessed. It indeed is controversial, but the way Lynn wrote it, it had sincerity and sympathy in the whole story. I read about some trouble she went through doing this strip, but in the end I think it is one of her best strips out there, along with Farley's death, and Michael and Deanna's reunion.

I mainly like the strip because of the Lawrence story. To me... this is the turning point for Michael and his crew. The milestone where everything finally comes to place. That's why this is probably my favourite collection for FBorFW.

One of Johnstons best collections.
Not only did this book hold the expected humor and comedy, but also one of Johnstons most controversial stories. Lawrence reveals something about himself that no one would have guessed. A powerful series which took my breath away. This characteristically serious-with-tinges-of-humor strip is the best in it's league. It will truly go down as a classic.

WONDERFUL!
This is another installment in P. C. Doherty's Chaucer series. The Franklin tells the tale of a young squire, Richard Greenele, sent on a mission by his Knight as he lays dying on the battlefield. Richard finds out that he is really a noble and begins a quest to unravel the mystery behind his father's downfall. This is a story of the coming of age of young Richard as well as a wonderful mystery full of murder and deceit.

P.C Doherty is in my opinion the best writer of historical mysteries out there. This book kept me riveted. I loved it.

OUTSTANDING!
Quite an excellent book. Doherty perfectly intermingles the pilgrim's conversations with the story told by the franklin. A page-turner and nearly impossible to put it down; I read it in two days! This book has all the classic murder mystery parts: death, sex, intrique, romance, and for those medieval fans, knights, ladies, verderers, castles, and of course those pilgrims. A five out of five stars!

A serious page-turner
Having read and enjoyed The Man of Law's Tale and The Knight's Tale, I was expecting to find The Franklin's Tale to be no less intriguing. My expectations were far exceeded. I was scarcely able to put it down, and, when I had finished it, I got my husband to read it, and HE couldn't put it down, either. This book is more "gothic" in flavor than the previous two, and perhaps that why I enjoyed it more. This has all the markings of a classic, one that I'll read again and again.
