Miss Pickerill goes to the Artic
Miss Pickerill is off on another adventure and has to leave her beloved cow behind. This simple book is good especially for 2nd - 4th graders. It has good vocabulary and educational value, but is also humorous. A very cute book. I loved it as a child and still think it is great.

A great way to start teaching your child about imagination &
This is a very short and simple book about Molly going on an adventurous journey by way of her back yard. My son loves this book and wants us to read it over and over. Molly is a small child whom he can relate to, is independent in preparing herself and her bag for her trip, and says goodbye to her comfort zones (her mom, her house) to begin an amazing adventure on her hike. I would recommend this book to parents of small children, 12 to 18 months, as a great way to begin talking about adventures and what Molly may find. Children of this age begin to become more adventurous themselves whether in their homes, backyards, neighborhoods, etc. and I believe can somehow relate to the freedom Molly feels as she prepares for her hike. I rated this book with 4 stars only because I would have liked to have seen Molly take a little longer hike. Her journey seemed a bit quick to me, but perhaps not to a small child. Their imagination of Molly's hike may take them on a longer journey than my adult eyes can see!

Monkey see- -monkey do
This book describes the antics of a pet monkey named Mo who is invited for lunch on a fancy ocean liner. The monkey is admonished in the invitation to act like a gentlemen. He tries to, but unfortunately, the gentleman he decides to imitate is not a very well-behaved man, since he makes a habit of walking on railings and such. As a result of his poor choice of role model, Mo gets a tongue lashing, but then his hero falls overboard, Mo saves him, and is declared a real gentleman. Despite the tension of misbehavior, scolding, and a fall into the ocean, many kids love the humor of Mo's antics, and of course, there is a happy ending. The book contains about 300 words.

Fun Way to Learn about the Months
This is the best book I've found so far to help my kids learn the names of the months. The author has written a short verse about each pair of months (January-February, March-April, etc.), singling out things about the months that appeal to kids (like walking in the snow and drinking cocoa in Jan.-Feb. and having a cookout and watching fireworks in July-August). The illustrations are very eye-catching and humorous. My daughters, 5 and 4, both enjoy the book. My one small quibble is that the verses are not something that would be easily memorized by a young child.

"MOVIE MUTTS" : FOUR PAWS UP AND A LICK
Dog lovers and film enthusiasts alike will thoroughly enjoy Movie Mutts, a clever offering about the history and importance of the canine thespian to the silver screen. The book begins with some interesting background notes on how dogs were artfully incorporated into early filmmaking and sustained their roles through more sophisicated cinematic efforts, including animation. The authors (the principal writer is Coco, but her "human" gets some credit here) concentrate on the films of the 30's and 40's, many of which may be unfamiliar to readers, but the book achieves a likeable balance between the true superstars like RinTinTin and Lassie and the (shall we say) lesser known breed of Hollywood's four-legged finest. The impressive array of photographs is interspersed with interesting bits of legend and trivia (just how much did Toto get paid for The Wizard of Oz?) as well as Coco's clever reflections on her more famous brethren and even contains some helpful bits of advice on the inner workings of the canine mind. ("And make no mistake. We know when you're about to leave town.") I enjoyed the thematic organization of the pictures, which highlights some of the major social roles of dogs in film, with clever titles like "Family Friends," "Dogs in Heat" and the particularly enjoyable "Canine Cupids." (On a personal note, since I read the chilling chapter on "Bad Dogs," I haven't been able to look my own two pooches straight in the eye. But I shouldn't be doing that anyway, Coco admonishes.) You'll find yourself reflecting on your personal favorites, predictably, most of them from your childhood. Though I must say, Coco, the blatant omission of the fiercely intelligent Duke, from 1964's Dead Ringer, or Cleo, the sassy bassethound from the 50's sitcom The People's Choice (she must have had an early film career!) was surprising. But I'll be a "good sport" and toss it up to the depth and expanse of a subject matter that can't possibly covered in a hundred or so pages,. And just wait for the sequel.

Give it "four paws up and a lick." Add this one to your gift list for the dogowning movie buffs among your circle of friends.

Touchingly funny
Mrs Harris the London char is back and on her way to New York accompanying her rich American employers. But she has another mission:to find the father of poor, abused and uncared for little Henry Brown and effect a family reunion. How she goes about her search and what happens when she finds the boys father is the subject of this charming little tale.Gallico's beautiful language alone would make this book a must read together with the lovable and unsinkable Mrs Harris, one of my all time favorite characters in a book. Mrs Butterfield is there too ,shaking like a leaf but supporting her Ada,and so is the distinguished Marquis de Chassagne.A nice, old fashioned little story that touches the heart while making you laugh.

Naughty Nancy Goes to School

Words can't begin to describe just how naughty Nancy the mouse is. In fact, words don't describe her naughtiness... In John S. Goodall's wordless picture book, the entire story is told through exquisite and humorous watercolor paintings. Nancy is dragged by her determined-looking mother through the gates of school, to be met by the matronly bell- and stick-wielding teacher. But no sooner has Nancy's mother left the premises when her irrepressible daughter starts acting up and acting out. Mimicking her teacher, climbing onto the roof to retrieve a ball (that she hit up there, of course), tormenting her classmates on a field trip to the shore, Nancy is a menace. And yet, when another young mouse finds himself in dire straits, it turns out Nancy has a bit of a valiant, selfless heroine in her, as well.

The reprinting of many of John Goodall's wordless books (Naughty Nancy, The Midnight Adventures of Kelly, Dot, and Esmeralda, Shrewbettina's Birthday, etc.) is a windfall for imaginative beginning readers. Children can make up the words to the story as they go along, changing it as they notice new details, or according to their own mood or whim. Half pages alternate with full pages to advance the story--young readers will be intrigued by this unusual format. The mice's old-fashioned attire is nicely coordinated with the oh-so-modern mischief. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

Wonderful Wordless Book
My children loved this book as toddlers and still enjoy this book as lower elementary school students.

What's unique about this book? No words and half pages. Why do children love the book? Naughty Nancy is always in trouble, just like most young children--not because she is bad, she is just curious and fun-loving. All children can identify with her. The wordless format allows the adult reader to make the story as detailed or as simple as necessary to interest the child. Pictures are in full color, detailed, and amusing.

My children checked them out repeatedly from the public library and until recently, they were out of print. If you like this, try other books by John Goodall such as Paddy Pork.

Fun, interactive reading
I am a first grade reading teacher and recently had to find books to kick off our school wide reading marathon. I knew I would have first and kindergarten classes and that the theme would be "The Universe", so I tried to find a book on that level and about that topic. My four year old daughter helped me pick this one- the pictures alone are worth it! Each page gives you something to talk about with your child (or class) and has such picture support that even non-readers get the gist. The book tells all about what happens when the sun goes to sleep and moon and stars come out to play. It's a great quick read for bedtime or anytime!

Orp
Orp dosn't know basketball is his game-until he tries it and finds out he's a natural. But he never knew how complicated the life of a basketball star could become. As soon as he starts scoring big points for the team, he finds out that four girls have a crush on him-and one of them is pretty cheerleader Ellen Fairchild, the girl that his best friend Derrick is crazy about. With the school dance coming up, Orp is spending as much time juggling his life as he is dribbling the ball-just to avoid hurting anybody's feelings. But Orp's heading for disaster...unless he can pull off the crazy scheme his sister Chloe has come up with.

Panda Bear Goes Visiting
This was my favorite book when I was six years old. I got it at the San Francisco zoo when they had two pandas on loan from China. Although it is not realistic that a panda bear would play hide-and-seek or watch movies with children, the story teaches a lesson about wild animals and why they need to stay in their own habitat. The illustrations in this book are beautiful and it is neat to see the traditional Chinese clothing on the characters. I would definitely recommend this book.
