Railroad in the wood- the giaintest book I have ever seen ab
I can only say - nice, fine, or "giantest".

Praiseworthy collection
"Railroads In the Woods" is a praiseworthy collection of old and historic logging photographs from Oregon and Washington State. John T. Labbe and Vernon Goe did a workmanlike job of selecting the 440 b&w photos. But Labbe and Goe also penned a winning text. They take us from the 1880s, when "early railroads were just a step away from the bull teams," to August 1957, when the Long-Bell division of International Paper Company finished logging the hills overlooking Keasey, Oregon. While some of the pictures are of minor importance (and quality), most are large, sharp, and informative. Especially dynamic are the picture of a powerful Shay (a geared engine built in 1894); an interior shot of a Big Creek mess hall, which is surprisingly roomy and comfortable; and a two-page spread of the spectacular Baird's Creek bridge, near Longview, Washington. This book has a fine index, and the printing and layout are beautifully done.

This Book serves as a Time-machine to the past.
I am not a thief. I say this because the book: "Railroads In The Woods" was the only book that I have ever intentially checked out from the public library with no intention of giving it back. My plan, which worked, was the pay the library for the book. Now I have found that I can get this book from Amazon.com...This is great. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in railroads, history, or just looking at really cool pictures. A VERY SPECIAL ACTOR WITH A TALENT FOR HIMSELF!
I remember a friend who was born with down syndrome his name was Nathan Myers. He use to live in Kakabeka Falls a while back. He and I went to St. Martin's School in grade five or six I think? Anyway he kind of looked like a resemblence to TV's Chris Burke the actor who played Corky Thatcher from "Life Goes On" with the same disability that he has. But I have not read this book yet. But i'm sure it's about him and his life told in a biography with the handicap Chris Burke was born. I would like to meet him in person some day and get an autograph and be his fan. Because he reminds me a lot of my old friend Nathan. I remember watching his show long ago and it was interesting to see him play the role as a Thatcher family son with a genetic disorder and a very special person he can be in real life with lots of talent!

A Great Read
When I first began watching "Life Goes On", years ago, I was immedietly drawn in. The sheer talent and ability of Chris Burke blew me away, and this book really gives insight into his childhood and life. It really is a fantastic story that I suggest to anyone looking to read about someone with the courage and strength of the biggest tiger in the jungle, who overcomes stereotypes and boundaries. I wish there had been a little bit more about the behind the scenes of "Life Goes On" and about his musical career, but all in all, it's well worth the money.

VERY touching and heartwarming
I read this book last year in 7th grade. THe book fair came to our school and I had my money and I was read to buy something good. I went over to the shelf and as I went through the books this book caught my eye. I remembered that when I was really little we'd watch "Life Goes On" every week and I thought it was so cool for "someone like that" to be able to accomplish "all that" so I bought the book. As I read it I'd tell bits and pieces of the story ( my personal favorite is about the small pine tree growing in his...) they'd be hanging from a limb each day until I read more of the book-quarreling over who would borrow it from me first. Meanwhile all day I'd look at things from a simpler point of view thinking of how Chris might see this situation. (or one of my down-syndrome friends Sarah) It made me feel like, wow he had a HARD life and all of my formerly HUGE problems were like nothing. I could do ANYTHING it gave me a huge surge of power and confidence. It made me feel like me for the first time, making me feel like wow people care for each other, they really do. This is a VERY special book. touching deep parts of the soul unknown until this book is read, see for yourself..

Timothy Goes to School
Published in Hardcover by E P Dutton (June, 1981)
Author: Rosemary Wells
Amazon base price: $11.89
Used price: $1.76
Collectible price: $7.41
Wearing his brand-new, mom-made sunsuit, Timothy is all set for the first day of school. It looks like nothing can spoil this exciting moment... until perfect Claude shows up in his jacket and tie.

"Hello!" said Timothy.
"Nobody wears a sunsuit on the first day of school," said Claude.
It's all downhill from here. Claude has all the right clothes, answers every question correctly, and never has to eat lunch alone. Timothy is just about ready to give up trying when he meets Violet, who is suffering from a similar case of imperfection. Her problem is perfect Grace, who sings, dances, and counts up to a thousand. Soon Timothy and Violet are falling over with the giggles, and those first-day blues are fading fast.

Every school has a Claude or two, and less-than-perfect kids will be absolutely thrilled to read about Timothy's triumph over his initial insecurities. Rosemary Wells, author-illustrator of scads of award-winning books (Bunny Cakes and Emily's First 100 Days of School), has provided all-new illustrations for this edition of her classic. The expressions on Timothy's face, as he goes from innocent hopefulness to bewilderment to crushed dismay--and finally to hiccup-y joy--are true perfection. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

I give the original 5 stars
I am not sure why this book was re-illustrated and re-written. The writing revisions are not too bad, but the illustrations are not at all in the same league as in the original. They are big, bright and colorful. Perhaps they make the book a more successful read-aloud. If I had come across this book without having seen Wells' original, I'd have given it a higher rating. I'd have really loved it. But when you've already had the best nothing else will do.

My son absolutely loves this book!
This is currently #1 on my son's reading list. He could listen to this 20 times a day. I think he likes the fact that it's realistic---there are kids out there like Claude, that really make kids like Timothy not enjoy school as they otherwise would, but then Timothy is able to find a way to overcome his sadness. The pictures are wonderfully expressive. A real gem of a book.

I LAUGHED OUT LOUD AND REMEMBERED MY FIRST DAYS IN SCHOOL
so vividly it was scary. This book nails the feelings kids go through so perfectly I strongly recommend it to anyone with kids. A great read for the adults as much as for the kids. The artwork is perfect and funny too.

Storyline from Publisher
Seven days of sun, sand and sex, sex, sex! That's exactly what Carly Saunders needs - anonymous sex...and lots of it. She has one week of hedonism before she heads home to a teaching job - and her place as the pastor's daughter. But when she runs into Rick Baxter, a childhood friend from her hometown, Carly's plan is ruined. Too bad - because Rick has sin written all over him....

Rick can't believe this sexy siren is the good little girl he'd known twelve years ago. In her thong bikini, Carly looks like a woman on the make. Well, if she wants some vacation action, he is definitely her man. And if she doesn't agree, he'll just have to remind her that good girls should do as they're told....

fun vacation romance
Carly Saunders knows that next week she will return home to Oroville as the newest middle school teacher and to her role of the prim and proper daughter of the local pastor. However that is next week so encouraged by her pal Ginger she plans seven sultry sunny sexy days with a stranger. Alas poor Carly finds that the hunk she has met is her childhood friend Rick Baxter. Carly might as well be home as sex is out.

Rick thinks that the dozen years since he has last seen Carly has turned her into one hot babe. He feels that only a woman on the prowl would wear her itsy bitsy thong bikini. He plans to be the prey she catches as he wants to ignore the sun and keep her in his bed for the entire week. Then again perhaps that is not enough. A lifetime would suffice if he can convince the good girl next door to agree that he is the forever fling she craves.

Fans of contemporary romance last flings following college will appreciate Rick's efforts to make it with Carly. On the other hand, though Carly's rejection of Rick's advances are rationalized by her failures with men and their shared hometown background, readers will ask her to move over and give them a shot at the nice friendly huggable Rick. Overall this is a fun vacation romance with two individuals who seem so right for one another especially once Carly realizes that Rick actually desires her and is worth the risk of pain.

Not enough social history
This book is essentially a manuscript of memoirs, (the impression I had was a thesis) written by the daughter of a Naval officer stationed at Pearl. The day-to-day details of pre-war life in Hawaii (considered an exotic location to most Americans in the early '40s) are well described. The civilian impressions of post-attack Honolulu are also the strengths of this work. The book is less successful as it attempts to describe the progress of the war. It probably would have been better to relate the war news "as heard" at the time, and the ups and downs of civilian morale dealing with the news, and the thousands of servicemen descending on the islands.
All in all, a fairly good read, but not an in-depth memoir of civilian life in wartime Hawaii.

Wonderful photographs
With the release of the new movie "Pearl Harbor", there is heightened interest in the events that began our involvement in World War II. This short work fills some of that knowledge gap, and it's crammed full of wonderful photographs taken by the female author's mother while she lived in the islands in 1941 and 1942. There is nothing like a photo to add realism to a text, and both aspects of this work complement each other. There is a lot of text that gives an overview of what happened on the islands directly after the attack, and how life changed for the residents. The bonus is that we are also given a first person account of that life by Carroll Jones, the daughter of the taker of those excellent photos. This is the type of book you will want to savor over the years, and the photos will keep it ever new in your mind and memory.

Great mystery, weak secondary characters.
I picked up this novel because of the famous name, and I wanted to see if Stephen could actually write, or if he was just flying along on his famous parent's coattails. I was pleased to find an amusing story and a good mystery and a fairly strong main character. However, the secondary characters left something to be desired, especially the character of Casey. I had no idea why RJ would be remotely interested in this woman. I was disappointed that Bogart didn't flesh out the character of Wendy a bit more, since she had promise, but she disappeared without a word, along with the evidence she was going to find for RJ. I also felt that there were a few too many loose ends left in the story. This can be a plus in some stories, but in this case all I saw were dangling threads. I hope that Bogart continues to write about RJ Brooks, because that character is very strong and enjoyable. And hopefully in his next install! ment we'll learn more about the characters that had to sit in the sidelines.

Fans of Bogart and Bacall will love this mystery
Private Investigator R.J. Brooks is irate to learn that Andromeda Studios is planning to make a sequel to the classic movie, As Time Goes By, the film that co-starred his parents. Though in New York to escape Tinseltown, R.J. tells a reporter that he will do anything to stop the film from ever being produced since it would be an affront to the memory of his parents. This interview becomes national news when people from the studio start being killed. The police are positive that R.J. is the culprit since he basically confessed his plans. ......R.J. begins to investigate the series of murder destroying the project. He hopes to not only clear his name, but to locate the missing studio head at the bequest of the man's daughter. As more deaths occur, R. J. realizes that he must identify the culprit soon before he becomes the next victim of someone with a terrific grudge towards the production of the sequel. ......The author is the son of his namesake and Lauren Bacall, and he sprinkles references from their movies throughout his novel. However, readers need to realize that THE REMAKE OF AS TIME GOES BY is an excellent who-done -it regardless of the author's gene pool. R.J. is a fabulous private investigator whose escapades readers will enjoy. This novel and the first R.J. tale (PLAY IT AGAIN) are fun to read who-done-its because the mystery is quite good and the Hollywood footnotes add a unique touch. Readers will think that this is the beginning of a long friendship. ......Harriet Klausner

I loved this book
This book has it all, for men and women both! For the men, there are fast cars, Lear jets, bombs and guns, and even a shoot-em-up drama near the end. For the women there's love, romance, and family. I think this book has the best of both worlds.

very sweet and inspirational
The author takes the story of the movie "BABE" and puts it into Dr. Seuss rhyme format that just rolls off your tongue and makes you giggle. There is also a message for children: "...Chase every rainbow. Go down every stream. Follow your heart. Follow your dream..." It lets them know that they too change the world.
