From majoring in chemical engineering at Stanford University (at the age of 16) to giggling with hairdressers in Nairobi (in Swahili) to orbiting the Earth as the first woman of color to travel in space (conducting experiments in life and material sciences and bone cell research as the mission's science specialist), Mae Jemison has never been one to sit and watch life pass her by. From childhood, Jemison knew she would be an astronaut--the fact that space travelers tended to be white men only meant one more obstacle she would gladly face. Her autobiography, sassy, confident, and witty, is full of anecdotes designed to empower young readers, even as they chuckle at her foibles and cheer her victories. Whether working as a Peace Corps medical officer, fiercely upholding her feminist stance in a sexist college class, or dancing her "fanny off," Jemison is an inspiration to every child who dreams big. Just Ok
When I started reading this book, I expected it to be full of inspiration and advice on how to acheive great things in life as Dr. Jemison did. While I respect her for her wonderful acheivements, ambition, and zeal, through out the book I could not help but think she was conceited and stuck on herself. This book was not inspirational or encouraging to me. Rather, it was just about how wonderful Dr. Jemison is. She told story after story after story about how she was so wonderful, and I felt, above other people. I also found editing errors in it which I felt was unacceptable. I am a sixteen year-old girl who wants to be a doctor when I grow up, so I thought reading this book would be worthwhile. I do admire her for following her dreams and "the wind" (which by the way became an overused metaphor), but I spent my time reading the book frustrated and wondering when she would stop tooting her own horn.

Like a conversation with a friend
I saw Dr. Jemison on a public access TV program. Her writing in this book is so conversational that I did not even realize that she was actually *reading* from her book! I knew then that the book would be enjoyable to read since the writing would be very accessible. I got the book as soon as I had a chance.

It *was* enjoyable because she speaks in a normal conversational tone that makes one feel at home with her.

I found her life to be amazing -- and I've never read about someone who is so intelligent, talented and personable.

While I think that the intended audience for this book is teen/pre-teen gals, I did also enjoy it for the sake of just learning about this amazing woman.

My only criticism is that the book tended to jump around a bit.

Great for motivating young girls
I read this book with girls ages 11-14 in a mentoring program that I am involved in. We had such a wonderful discussion. The girls could instantly relate to the challenges that Dr. Jemison faced as a young African American girl trying to excel in a non-traditional field of endeavor.

I highly recommend this book because Dr. Jemison is so warm, honest and down to earth in her story telling. She also lets you see the ordinary side of her and her family. It gives every little girl the realization that they too (with a little hard work) can achieve their dreams if they remain focused and true to themselves.

Dr. Jemison's life is filled with adventure and adversity and she often chooses the "road less traveled". It truly has made all the difference.

Orange Socks How a Yuppie goes Yogi
This book is not what I expected. I was hoping to learn why Yoga became so important to the author. Rather the book focused on a journey of self discovery. The connection between the two, to me, was tenuous. The concept was interesting but it missed the mark.

Valerie is really a genuine person
Valerie Simonson is true blue. Her book only give a smattering of her qualities.
I and my departed wife read the origional manuscript before it went to the publisher.
There are a few things that we thought were important in the book that were taken out.
I hope some day Val will add these to another book so that the readers will not feel that there is something missing
My departed wie used to baby sit Valerie, and loved her dearly. When we found out that she was trying to promot her new book I went on line around the world telling people about it, because we new that was a TRUE story and an adventure that only a couragous and desperate woman could do. Valerie is contagious...if you were to ever meet her you would never forget her. She radiates. Keep up the good work Val ....We LOVE you --- Bill and Olive in Mexico,

The book helped me a lot in my spiritual journey. I would like to write to the author to discuss some details of the book ( it is about Baba, Valerie)

Homesickness
This book tells about the time Arthur's parents decided to send him off to camp. Arthur isn't sure he wants to go, and is a bit homesick. The children at camp play pranks like setting off smoke bombs, putting frogs in people's beds, and hiding their clothes. Arthur writes home postcards about how lonely he is. He still manages to enjoy himself somewhat, however, when he helps his team win the intercamp scavenger hunt. Arthur fans may get a kick out of this book, as well as kids who dream of going to summer camp. The book about 700 words.

Arthur Goes To Camp
In this book Arthur's parents send him to a summer camp with a few of his friends. Arthur wasn't pleased with the idea of spending a summer at camp and it seemed to only get worse. When spooky thing starting happening, the campers decided to investigate, and find out who had been playing the tricks on them, and at the same time, have fun. The book wasn't a bad read, kids between the ages of 3 and 5 would most likely enjoy it.

Arthur goes to camp
This was a great book. It was about-facing fears and doing something you don't think you would like. Arthur has to go to camp and he thinks its horrible then he gets there and it starts out bad then gets better as soon as they figure out whose trying to scare them. They end up scaring them right back and winning the scavenger hunt and he has a great time. I think this is for ages 5-10. It teaches kids know matter how bad u may think something is it may not turn out so bad.

Look for the third edition
The Road Goes Ever On is an interesting acquisition for keen Tolkienists for all the reasons other reviews have already gone into. I borrowed a copy of the original edition from my local library years ago, and was thrilled to find the third edition (c1993) at a bookshop recently. (Sadly, the composer passed away in 1994, so no further editions are likely.)

The third edition includes additional settings of "Bilbo's last song" and "Luthien Tinuviel" (from the Silmarillion) and comes with a CD that contains recordings of the whole song cycle, accompanied by piano. (The singer who does most of the songs seems a little... affected with lots of rolled Rs, but it's a good reference to listen to before playing.)

There is more than music in this book
The Road Goes Ever On was first published in the early 1960s, when Tolkien was still answering a great deal of fan mail asking questions about Middle-earth. There was so much more he wanted to tell his reading audience that he sometimes leaped at the chance to give them a little more about his Elves.

The Road Goes Ever On thus provides a glimpse of Elven history and mysticism found nowhere else. Linguists have also perused the analysis of the poems Tolkien provided. There is something for everyone in this volume.

Interesting musical diversion for Tolkien fans
I bought the hardcover version, and although the 'look' was old, the decoration of both the dust jacket and hardbinding was pleasing elvish script by Tolkien. The music itself takes a bit of getting into if you are not a proficient piano player (the music is for piano, voice and occasionally guitar) but once you have it down it is interesting listening to how Tolkien envisioned his music. This book was only 4 stars since there were many more songs from Tolkien's books I would have loved to have seen in here. Overall, very interesting for the musical Tolkien fans out there, but some favourite songs are missing, and the music can be difficult to play in places.

We love Spot The Dog
Spot the Dog books are a favourite with my girls. They love the simple stories that they can relate to (hiding, baking a cake, playing with others etc) and the lift-the-flaps always bring screams of delight even though we've read them many many times. As they grow I'm sure they'll be one of the books they learn to read with. The words are simple and the font easy to read. Lovely books to cuddle up with your children on your lap. They are also big enough to hold up and read to them as they sit in back seat on car trips.

A wonderful Spot creation
This is one of the best Spot books. My baby loves lifting the flaps and looking at the cute animals. It is on par with Where Is Spot the classic. Makes me want to pack up the wagon and head out to the beach!

The Favorite Spot Book
My nephew, Philip, is 15 months old and this is his most favorite Spot book and most favorite book in general. Each time it is read to him, he squeals with delight at all of the pictures - especially the ones behind the flaps that he insists on carefully peeling back by himself. His parents, nanny, brother, grandparents and I have read this book to him so many times that the flaps have fallen out from his extensive flipping (nothing that tape or Elmer's Glue can't fix). This book is so well loved that Philip often wants to sleep with it in his crib! Perhaps a new copy is an order! Hear that, Santa?

Historically accurate, but repeats Death of a King
I read Death of a King several years ago and really enjoyed it, so I had high hopes here. Unfortunately Doherty repeated the same plot - granted, with a different king - but still essentially the same. This disappointed enough that I am not eager to read more of his work. If you haven't read either, I think Death of a King is the better book.

The book is historically accurate, which is important to me. Doherty clearly knows his English history. I like the idea of "completing" Chaucer's tales. It does add to the story if you know the tales, but if you don't I think you can sort the characters out. I would encourage people who enjoyed this book to take a look at Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. They can be a bit difficult, because of the language, but there is a reason they are an English Classic.

MEDIEVAL ESPIONAGE
This is another installment in the Chaucer pilgrim tales. This is the tale told by the Lawyer. The Lawyer tells a tale of Nicholas Chirke who is hired by the Sheriff to find out who killed a man named Berisford and save the man named Fromlich who is being framed for the killing.

This tale was at first confusing with the amount of names being thrown about, but that subsided and it became a wonderful story full of greed, espionage, mystery, wanton women and of course murder. Not only is it a good tale, but you get to go back in time and dwell for a while in 14th century England. Enjoy your stay.

Loaded With Action
This book is loaded with action and it is fun to read. Doherty has a doctorate in history from Oxford and obviously loves his subject.

Good
A better book that deals with rock legal/economic matters is ROCKONOMICS. A lot, if not most, of the Beatles stuff, for instance, that are in this book are in that book, but better written. Nonetheless, this book had stuff I hadn't known about before, and it confirms what Pete Townshend said in "Rolling Stone" when it was pointed out to him that he had been friendly with a lot of English aristocrats, "Aristocrats are supposed to be real sh**s. But I don't think I met even one who was a real sh**. Whereas, in the music business, I could introduce you to a THOUSAND sh**s! " This book is a good study of those types.

So sue me!!
Nothing says "big business" like a good lawsuit or two... and here's a book that's full of them. Whether it's Billy Joel suing his brother-in-law (who was also his business manager), the Shirelles suing George Harrison, the Beatles suing each other, or some hick parents suing Judas Priest for "causing" their kids to commit suicide (even though they came from physically violent homes), it's all fun and games in the rock and roll courtroom. Most of these are fairly well-known cases, but Soocher's light-handed style lends itself to a quick read. He doesn't get hung up on minutae, and keeps the narrative down to a minimum (although conversely, he also has a genteel streak wherein he sometimes alludes to lurid incidents without fully explaining them, which can get irksome...) Censorship comes up in a few of these cases, but mostly it's all about money, money, money, with a little concern for intellectual property thrown in for good measure. Oddly enough, I found George Michael's lawsuit against Sony to be one of the more interesting chapters in this book -- maybe just because it was one of the least familiar cases. At any rate, if you want to keep your illusions about showbiz intact, you might wanna veer away from this one. If, on the other hand, you're curious about what makes a multi-million dollar contract tick, then snap it up.

Glad I Bought This For Class ¿ Very Useful
I bought this book for a course I'm taking about the music business and after reading it, I'm so glad I did. It's an easy read since it's broken into several chapters...each about a particular musician or group. The chapters tell the story of a legal battle or a deal gone terribly wrong. It illustrates the pitfalls that lay before artists when it comes to publicity, trademarks, estate planning, merchandising, copyright infringement, royalty claims, publishing, bankruptcy, and so much more. I particularly enjoyed the stories about Elvis Presley, Billy Joel, The Beatles, and Judas Priest. A terrific addition to your personal library.

And the Crowd Goes Wild/And the Fans Roared
It's a good book & great for those who have CD players. BUT it would be great to also offer it on cassette (for those people, like my father, who do not have a CD player, but would LOVE it).

Holy Cow!
Following up on the one-two punch they delivered in last year's bestselling And the Crowd Goes Wild, Garner and Costas stick to the winning formula: a coffee-table compilation of great moments in sports with a companion two-CD collection of original broadcasts of those events, starring Joe Montana, Mary Lou Retton, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and dozens of other champs.

There are a few muffs -- why use an audio clip from 1956 to illustrate Jackie Robinson's historic 1947 debut with the Dodgers? But there's much more to celebrate, such as Lyell Bremser's call of Johnny Rodgers's 72-yard punt return in Nebraska's 1971 victory over rival Oklahoma: "Holy moly! Man, woman and child, did that put 'em in the aisle!"

A true sports paradise. A great gift combo of book and CD audio delights.

For the big sports fan
These books are great for sports fans of all ages. The book is narrated really well and the moments highlighted are truly memorable.

Kid's book
If you like hampsters, then you will enjoy this book. It is about Fluffy, a pet hampster, who lives in a school. Fluffy always pretends that he is something other than a hampster, and that his name is Butch. Several students at the school play with Fluffy every day. Two girls dress Fluffy up in a pink doll outfit. Two other children in the story made a play yard for the Fluffy. Fluffy has a big imagination for a hampster. He pretends to be a policemen, a captain, a Commander, and a spy. A story about a cute little hampster, I would recommend this book to children. It is at a first and second grade level.

Fluffy Goes to School...
I have a 5 year old and a 7 year old, and they were on the floor laughing with this book. I highly suggest it, the kids wanted to hear again and again.

I will definetly look at the rest of the series..

Fluffy for President!
My kids (7 and 4) and I recently discovered the Fluffy books and can't get enough of them. They're awfully funny! This is the first book, which tells how Fluffy gets his name and settles in to his new home in an elementary school classroom. He can't believe the kids name him Fluffy--he had something more like "Butch" in mind. We highly recommend this book, and any others about Fluffy.

Those 14 pages go quick
The illustrations are not very cute, the text is a bit too simple and the book is over before you know it. Unless you are a die hard paddingtion fan - just move on.

Classic for all ages
My toddler has loved this book since he was six-months old. He loves the pictures and rhymes on each page. It has been a constant favorite and we have read it together over and over and over again. A must have for any toddler's collection.

Great book for babies
My 1 year old loves this book, and so do I. It's simple, short, and rhymes--perfect for both of us! If you love Paddington Bear, you will want to get your littlest ones started with this book.
