The Last Enchantment
The book was enjoyable but with the Mary Stewart novels have a lot of detail that can be drawn out.

I couldn't put the book down.
When I first started reading this book, I thought that it would be similar to other authors work. I was wrong. This book ruled! I couldn't put it down.

Very good
At seventy-three years old, former employee of the Brooklyn mob, Benny Ashe enjoys his retirement in the Coral Sands retirement community of St. Augustine. For the last two months, retired jewel thief Peter Benington also resides in Coral Sands. The David Niven-like sophisticate plans to make time with one particular woman, Eleanor, who has caught his eye. After the exciting, albeit illegal, lives they have lived, both men relish the quiet serenity of their senior citizen beach community.

However, their idyll golden days are abruptly interrupted when the murdered corpse of the community's gardener, Mr. Yamaguchi, is found amidst the bushes. Though the twosome would prefer to mind their business, they cannot. Not only did they consider the victim a friend, another resident, Mildred is somehow connected via the Internet. So what is two retired ex-criminals forced to do. Simple, go out and investigate what really happened in order to uncover the identity of ! the true killer.

There appears to be a delightful trend towards a new mystery classification starring senior citizens as amateur sleuths, affectionately known as GAS (graying amateur sleuths). The newest entry in this sub-genre, AS CRIME GOES BY, is an appealing who-done-it due to the intriguing senior citizens who appear throughout the novel. Especially delightful is the former criminal pair, who are as opposite in appearance and demeanor as two partners can be. The story line is crisp and refreshing, leaving readers wanting more novels by Richard F. West, starring Peter and Benny.

The Author Gets Better and Better! Wonderful Who-Dunnit!
Another eye opening look at the life of our senior citizens. Funny, witty, with plenty of head scratching till the end yet a relaxing smooth read. Kept me giggling and thinking through the whole book. Turning into a great series and look forward to more from this author.

The cutest dog in books goes to school
My daughter loves Biscuit and I love the illustrations. This is one of the original-style books like Biscuit, Bath-Time for Biscuit, Biscuit Finds A Friend, etc. and not one of the larger format books (Happy Chanukah Biscuit, Happy Thanksgiving Biscuit, Biscuit on the Farm, etc.).

In this book, the adorable puppy tries to follow The-Girl-With-the-Purple-Sneakers to school.

Pretty basic reading and excellent illustrations. Good for young kids who can't read as well as a good book for kids just beginning to read on their own.

Here's Biscuit off on another adventure
Biscuit is a little puppy who wants to go to school like his owner. He follows the little girl to school one day. Once at school Biscuit wants to join in with the other boys and girls. He wants to play ball, hear a story, wants a snack and meet the teacher. The little girl is worried that the teacher will be angry that Biscuit came to school. It turns out the teacher and the students enjoy Biscuit being with them.

This book is a great book for young dog lovers. There are very little words per page. Beginner readers will enjoy this book. The pictures are also very cute.

I would recommed this book for young children because it will keep their attention well. This is one is a series of other Biscuit books. If they enjoy this one they will look for others by the same author.

Blue Goes to School
Published in Hardcover by Bt Bound (September, 2000)
Authors: Angela C. Santomero and David B. Levy
Amazon base price: $10.12
List price: $11.25 (that's 10% off!)
Blue loves going to school. Each day she fills her backpack with lunch, a smock for painting, and her favorite book for reading time. When she arrives at school, all her friends are there: Green Puppy, Orange Kitten, Magenta, and Purple Kangaroo, as well as their teacher, Mrs. Marigold. But school isn't all fun and games. Sometimes there are challenges, such as when Blue knocks over her milk at lunchtime, or when Green Puppy sits in Blue's special place on the reading rug. "Should Blue make Green Puppy move out of her favorite spot? Or should Blue sit somewhere else today?" Readers are treated to the preschool pooch's thought processes as she envisions each option, and are asked to help Blue come up with the best answer to the problem.

Blue is a favorite among toddlers and preschoolers from her Nick Jr. TV show, Blue's Clues and many lively storybooks (Magenta's Visit, What to Do, Blue?, Welcome to Blue's Clues, etc.). In this interactive story, young children can help their beloved blue pup face some very familiar school-day concerns—-and find terrific solutions. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

Blue at school
The young reader (or read-to) follows Blue through a day at school with Yellow and Orange Kittens, Green Puppy, Purple Kangaroo, and Magenta. In the charming, gentle manner that Blue's Clues manages so well, children are encouraged to think through several difficult social situations, such as: Blue has spilled her milk. Should she sit there and feel sad or clean it up? If someone takes Blue's usual spot in the reading circle, should she push in or sit elsewhere? The answers are obvious to adults, but not to toddlers and young children.

Fun! Fun! Fun!
This is a fun book about Blue, and when she goes to school. It makes little kids think about what they would do if they were in Blue's situation. It is a really fun book!

Entertaining and informative
This is a well organized, enjoyable look into this dynamic profession. Bender's work is professorial; young broadcasters would do well to pay attention to his sagacity. Although Bender provides ample warning of his bias toward exacting preparation, he might lose a little of the essence of sports broadcasting. In treating broadcasting as tantamount to a science, he leaves you without the reason why he does it (and why I do it and why we all do it) -- sports broadcasting is FUN. It is revitalizing. Bender at times treats it as something that requires such precision that it saps his energy. I will say, however, that stripping some of the luster away from this coveted and misunderstood profession is necessary. As mentioned in the Booklist review, he provides plenty of "look-what-you're-getting-into" advice. He's done a good job at that, along with providing clear and understandable advice for someone willing to follow in his shoes. Besides, nobody needs to be told how much fun it is. What we DO need to be told, Bender provides.

Excellent book for Young Sportscasters
I am not a big reader of books. Often I will buy a book, set it down and not pick it up for weeks, or even months or years. However, this book I sat and read almost cover-to-cover. As a sportscaster myself, I found it entertaining, informative, and provides excellent direction and insight for younger men and women who are hoping to break into this field. If you are planning or hoping to one day go into the broadcasting industry, whether its in sports, news, or whatever, I would say this is required reading!

Count Dracula Goes to the Movies: Stoker's Novel Adapted, 1922-1995
Published in Hardcover by McFarland & Company (September, 1999)
Author: Lyndon W. Joslin
Amazon base price: $44.00
Used price: $38.90

A very good book overall
This is a well written and easy to read book. Joslin takes a scholarly (and not snobbish) look at the Dracula movies made over the past few decades. My only complaint about McFarland books in general is that I wish they contained more photos and illustrations. However, the end-all-be-all of "Dracula at the Movies" books still belongs to Midnight Marquee's Dracula book.

Wonderful!!
While a scholarly work of high-quality content, organization, and thoughtfulness, this book is easy-to-read and a pleasure to behold!

For any fan of all things gothic/Dracula/vampires, this is a must-have!!!

Curious George Goes to a Costume Party

nice halloween alternative, with George
This Curious George book is a nice alternative to other Halloween books, because it explores Halloween traditions other than trick-or-treating.

Curious George and the man with the yellow hat go to a friends house for a Halloween party, and it is a costume party. George and his friend have to borrow costumes from the hostess, and of course George's curiosity gets him in trouble. The guests play games like bobbing for apples.

This book is funny, like most curious george books. Children aged three and four who are just becoming familiar with Halloween will appreciate George's antics, and learn about halloween and costume parties at the same time.

There is nothing in this book that scared my son, aged 3. I don't think there is anything in here that would scare the average child of 3 or 4 years old. It's wholesome Halloween fun.

Typical Curious Fun!
At first I was a little suspicious about this book, "illustrated in the style of H.A.Rey by Martha Weston." I didn't want anybody messing with my dearly loved friend, Curious George! I am glad to say that I was pleasantly surprised. This book tells the Halloween adventures of our curious little pal, as he and the man with the yellow hat go to a costume party. At first, George finds it a bit scary because he doesn't understand about make-believe dress-up, but then he gets into the fun of it. They need to borrow costumes from the hostess of the party and George has lots and lots of choices. Due to George's typical curiosity, the party becomes much more lively than the hostess intended! The story and the illustrations are true to the style we know and love from the original Curious George books by Margret and H.A. Rey. The pictures are brimming with action and excitement and colorful fun. This story has the added benefit of introducing some Halloween characters that little ones may be frightened of and showing that they are really just pretend and taking the scariness out of them. It also shows fun Halloween customs like jack-o-lanterns, bobbing for apples and other party activities. This is a real treat for Curious George fans and for fans of Halloween. Don't miss it.

Curious George Goes to an Ice Cream Shop

Fine Curious George book
My son is two years old, and loves this Curious George book. Curious George Goes to an Ice Cream Shop was not written by H.A. Rey, the creator of Curious George. Rather, it was adapted from a Curious George video.

Still, it's a great story.

The Man With the Yellow Hat leaves George in the custody of Mr. Herb, at Mr. Herb's new ice cream shop. When George is unattended, he jumps on the counter, and begins adding scoops of various flavors to Mr. Herb's order! Later, he hops onto a counter near a window looking into the street. His antics prompt many onlookers, and suddenly Mr. Herb has more ice cream orders than he can handle!

As always, the mischievous George escapes any real trouble, while having a lot of fun. Everything turns out well.

Curious George Goes to an Ice Cream Shop
Once again George gets into mischief when the man in the yellow hat is not looking. George keeps us in stitches as he goes from one flavor to the next. Who wouldn't want to try ALL the flavors in the ice cream shop? This is a lovely book, and my students especially enjoyed reading it the day we made our own homemade ice cream!

Charming Froth
Charming froth, I don't suppose I have ever read a Regency - or known any distinction between them and the American bodice-ripper - and this was an absolutely exquisite introduction. I have thoroughly enjoyed the almost anti-romances the author writes as M.C. Beaton in the Hamish MacBeth and Agatha Raisin series. Ms. Chesney/Beaton is deliciously clever, is a master of the setting, and is absolutely merciless with her characters. And she must write these books with her tongue firmly in her cheek.

Escape to Chesneyland
When I find the world just to terrible to bear I pick up one of these magical Regency Romances and escape to Chesneyland. There is no finer place to recover after a strenusous day sorting out life's little problems. Though Chesney is not readily available here in the UK I find the chase through abe or ebay well worth it to find a little treasure. The Travelling Matchmaker series of which this is the first are pure genius. Mrs. Chesney I salute you as a brilliant antidote to depression!

Mysteries Solved!
Although I grew up reading the Noddy books, I had never read the first in the series, Noddy Goes to Toyland. Eventually, I purchased it for my daughter and took great pleasure in finding out the answers to a number of burning questions that I had been harboring for over 30 years. Just what *is* Noddy? How did he meet Big Ears? Where did he get his little house? his outfit? All is revealed in this volume- well worth the investment for the Noddy fan.

Little Noddy - just great for little children
Little Noddy goes to Toyland is a wonderful book for childen of all ages. My daughter is only 7 months old and she already knows who Noddy is!! We have Noddy story books, annuals and a tape of the Theme to his television show that is shown on BBC in the UK. We need characters like Noddy to fill our childrens lives and show them how fun life can be.
