PARTY TIME AT THE CHICKEN HOUSE
.

Don't count your chickens until you've got them in your sack Fast Fox.

Fox counts to six, but there's more. He's going to need a bigger sack.

There are 10 little chicks sitting around the table loaded up with tasty party treats. Mother Hen is in the kitchen icing the cake. Good old Slow Dog is helping with the party games.

Let's play hide and seek, then its blind man's bluff. Now it's time for big bouncy castle.

Fox sees a perfect way to catch the chickens. One by one, they bounce into his sack as they tumble off the castle. The tenth little chicken was too scared to go bouncing. Slow Dog showed her how.

Slow dog bounces right on top of Fast Fox and all the chickens escapes.

We think the story is over. The party is definitely over and Fast Fox has gone home to his house.

But ! There is the Fox counting chickens again. He's up to 99.

Ah! It's in his dreams.

Young children will love the "Fast Fox, Slow Dog" books. There's is quite a set of stories in this series now.

The stories are fun. There is nothing too scary here, despite the Fox's sharp teeth and his insatiable appetite for chickens. Good old Slow Dog always comes to the rescue.

The drawings are bright and cheerful with clever layouts of text and pictures. Allan Ahlberg's kid's books have a broad appeal. Look for more of his books. You'll love them and so will the young ones.

Father Christmas - off duty
This is the most wonderful companion to Father Christmas, a sophisticated art cartoon offering a humanist view of the the rotund red clad benefactor of so many childrens dreams. He spends his summer hols, trotting from place to place doing his best to blend in and not be recognised. The fact that he has to use valet parking in Las Veagas for his sleigh and raindeer not withstanding. With fantstic illustrations which please year of year, it is a Raymond Briggs must have book for every family, preferably as a pair with "Father Christmas" the slightly irreverend look at Christmas deliveries and their logistical problems.

terrific activity and sticker book for preschool age and up
Franklin is a great character for children. He is a good friend and son, but struggles with the issues that get to kids everywhere -- shyness, patience, etc.

This activity book contains 30 stickers that can be used (and reused) on the book's end pages, which depict a beach and a beach picnic scene. Activities include sorting, a maze, word search, spot the difference, connect the dots, picture search, word scramble, coloring and a secret code. There's even a recipe for juice pops. The book finishes with an answer page.

This will be a help to you when you are travelling with little Franklin or puzzle book fans.

Mardi Gras Fun for All!
This colouring book version of James Rice's Mardi Gras classic, "Gaston Goes to Mardi Gras," is fun for the whole family. It can be used as a way to explain some of your family's traditions, or to prepare children for a family trip. The pictures can be coloured, cut out and used for party decorations. The story reminds me of my childhood, and the Carnivals of days gone by. Rice presents a short, but comprehensive overview of Carnival, and the major krewes, balls, and parades. I highly recomend this book.

My kids loved this book!
My kids loved seeing the principal, lunch ladies, gym coaches, and teachers chase a gingerbread kid around the school in this book. The story is entertaining (with some repeating phrases kids liked to say along with the book) and the ending was a good surprising twist. The illustrations are REALLY cute and appealing. This book's well worth the money.

Children's Book Examines Gay Pride, Families, & Homophobia
GLORIA GOES TO GAY PRIDE is a story about a little girl named Gloria's day at the Gay Pride Parade. Gloria begins her narrative with a description of some of the events that occur during such celebrations as Valentine's Day, Halloween, Hanukkah, and Mother's Day. She then recounts the events, colors, people and families who make up Gay Pride Day. She finds this celebration as enjoyable as the other holidays. Various issues are discussed throughout the book and several implicit messages are conveyed. One of the messages which may or may not be explicit to adults and children is that anyone can be gay. One of Gloria's moms, for instance, holds a more traditional woman's job as a nurse while the other is a mechanic. At the parade, Gloria sees many familiar faces, such as her female mail carrier, male music teacher and the male nurse who works with her mother and who is there with his toddler son. The primary message of this story is that "love is the most important thing of all." The book raises the issue of homophobia by including people by the side of the parade holding signs which says, "Gays go away." One of Gloria's mothers explains to her that some people don't think two women or two men should love each other, but that the parade is held to help ensure that people can have a choice. Although that message is appropriate and clarifies that being gay is an adult's choice, it somehow removes the issue from the direct experiences of a young child. It also does not acknowledge that youth may feel and be gay themselves. In addition, homophobic responses and attitudes may be experienced by children raised by gay and lesbian parents. As a way to counter much of the real-world homophobia, the author has included people in Gloria's life who, whether they are gay or not, are supportive of her family structure (the owner of a restaurant they frequent and their shoe salesperson, for instance). The book contains black and white illustrations and is recommended for children ages three to seven. The length of the book is appropriate for threes and the events Gloria experiences are familiar to many children who have gone to parades and, specifically, to the Gay Pride Parade.

GROVER GOES SCHOOL

The best book in this series, hands down!
As I've stated in several other reviews, I used to read this series of books to my much-younger adopted sisters back when they were first in print in the 80s and early 90s. Now that I have a child of my own I have been re-collecting these books to read to him.

My sisters LOVED this book and my son also loves it as well. It is the first day of school for Grover, who is nervous about making new friends and not knowing anyone at his new school. After being a bit overwhelmed by the amount of kids in his new class, Grover starts to go way out of his way to be helpful and be popular with all the children. First he trades his new crayons for a beat up truck missing 3 wheels, then he misses cookie time after volunteering to clean up after the other kids. He keeps being nice to fault until Truman (who keeps offering him awful things for trade) swaps him for his jelly sandwich -- Grover can't say no because he is too afraid Truman will not like him. Grover can't take it anymore and starts to cry. It is only when he starts acting like himself that he makes friends -- Molly, who cheers him up after seeing him so upset, and Bill, who Grover says no to for a trade, but who also loves to play jacks, Grover's favorite game. A wonderful, affirming story about the value of friendship and how true friends like you for you.

This is the creme de la creme of this entire series and if you have a child who loves Sesame Street this is a must-own.
