A Nation of Riflemen
This NRA publication is a collection of articles reprinted from the NRA's American Rifleman magazine during WWII. The articles deal with the various rifles used by Americans as well as her allies and enemies. Several articles dealt with actual combat situations in Europe and the Pacific where riflemen rose to the occasion to lead the way to victory. Other articles emphasized the fact that many US soldiers were so effective because of their pre-war experiences with rifle shooting and hunting. If you want to experience wartime patriotism at its finest, this reprint collection is just the type of writing to read.

Anansi Goes Fishing

Kids love tricksters!
Anansi is lazy and he likes to play tricks! This time, turtle outsmarts Anansi. Anansi does all of the work while turtle gets tired. The kids in my class ask to listen to this book and the other Anansi tales, retold by Eric Kimmel, over and over again. This one takes a little bit more thinking to figure out what the tricks are.

BLOODSUCKING GHOULS
This is the first book in Mr. Doherty's Canterbury Tales type stories. The Knight tells a tale of vampires and strigoi(shapechangers) set in the city of Oxford, England. Students come up missing, towns people are found dead with their throats ripped open and the King sends out his Knight Sir Godfrey and his clerk Alexander McBain to ferret out the evil doers. Sir Godfrey comes up against an ancient evil that had supposedly been taken care of two hundred years earlier.

This novel is full of enough medieval history, blood sucking monsters and mystery to keep the most ardent reader of historical mysteries engrossed.

Great book for toddlers. This version is Greek and English.
We've read this book to our toddler for a long time and she really likes it.

This particular version is written in Greek and English, which is not what I wanted.

Published in Mass Market Paperback by Univ of Wisconsin Madison (January, 1992)
Author: Eric Wakin
Amazon base price: $14.95

A classic and noteworthy book.
The irrepressible Eric Wakin has done it again. Mr. Wakin has put together a brilliantly compelling look at the hidden politics undergirding the state and academia in latter day Thailand. The book is a gem. The prose is unflagging. It should be used in all undergraduate and graduate courses in South East Asian studies.

A refreshing, common-sense approach to self-defense.
Anything Goes is among the most comprehensive books on the subject of modern martial arts training. This book is primarily geared toward self-defense, and does not focus on traditional arts. Some of the dangers that the author points out are: "Tournament training", using flashy moves instead of effective ones, and practicing unrealistically. This book is as in-depth and descriptive as it gets. I have been teaching martial arts for many years, and this is the book that I recommend the most to my students. One additional note: The title is misleading.

As crime goes by-- : the life and times of "Bondi" Bill Jenkings
Published in Unknown Binding by Ironbark Press (1992)
Author: Bill Jenkings
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $72.99
Average review score:

Biography of a life reporting on crime.
Bill Jenkings only ever wanted to be one thing, a reporter. He well and truely achieved that goal, rising to the very top of his area, crime reporting. "As Crime Goes By" is his biography, detailing the bizarre, often comical, but always colourful profession which he led. From ordinary beginnings to a career at the "Daily Mirror" newspaper in Sydney, Mr Jenkings had covered some of Australia's biggest stories, including the Graham Thorne kidnapping, the Wanda Beach murders, and the Bogle-Chandler case -- to which he insisted he knew the solution.

Names such as Ray "Gunner" Kelly, "Chow" Hayes and Darcy Dugan pepper the pages. Bill Jenkings knew them all. His was a fascinating life, and this is a fascinating book. It is well worth a read.

Sweet Historical Tale for Young Readers
Sally is a young girl living in a busy New England household (filled with lots of aunts and uncles) between the American Revolution and the War of 1812. In this first book (of a series of 5 all slated to be reprinted by Bethlehem Books in the near future), Uncle Joseph has to come up with a clever scheme to convince his sister to resettle in Maine. Their adventures involve traveling in a little house pulled on skis by a huge team of oxen.

It's sometimes hard to find fun, worthwhile stories for young readers (especially the 7-9 year old crowd) that aren't too long or too intimidating. I was delighted to find that this book fits the bill nicely. It also makes a good read-aloud for even younger children and offers a gentle introduction to life in a different time.
