A multi-layered, tasty treat of "soul food".
Club Sandwich is "soul food" for the reader, a tasty treat of humor, inspiration, and challenge. Jess Moody, always the master of the spoken word, illustrates his mastery of the English language in his writings, also. His stories are sometimes poignant, evoking a catch in the throat; often humorous, causing a smile or laugh that cannot be contained; always entertaining, making the book difficult to lay down; but most, and best of all, they prompt a response of gratitude for God's goodness in the daily affairs of life. Get ready for a feast as you devour Club Sandwich!

Exquisite morsels of truth marinated in real life experience
I was a student of Jess Moody at Palm Beach Atlantic and it thrills me to see him still at it in "Club Sandwich". His gift to tell meaningful stories in a memorable way shines through once again. He writes the way he preaches, short, succinct, and powerful. If you need a heart- warming lift I highly recommend you read "Club Sandwich".

I'll Have Seconds
Club Sandwich is so good, you'll be asking for seconds. Jess Moody is a masterful storyteller with a message of faith, hope and humor. You can tell he's related to Will Rogers, Jr. because he got the "story-telling" gene that captures audiences with rememberances of the rich and famous and common folk.

My husband and I have been reading Club Sandwich as a morning devotional and it's a wonderful way to start a new day. In fact, it's so wonderful, we just purchased 40 copies to give as gifts to our family and friends.

I recommend Club Sandwich to everyone.

FREDDY GOES FLORIDA
Published in Library Binding by Knopf Books for Young Readers (12 April, 1987)
Author: Walter R. Brooks
Amazon base price: $3.95
Used price: $4.49
Collectible price: $6.30
Birds migrate south for the winter--why shouldn't farm animals? In Walter R. Brooks's Freddy Goes to Florida, that's precisely what the thoughtful beasts of Mr. Bean's upstate New York farm decide to do. Not wanting to leave the imperfect yet kindhearted farm owner in the lurch, they draw straws to select the lucky travelers. A robin draws them a map that shows them how to get to Florida, and they're off! The parade of animals--Jinx the cat, Freddy the pig, Robert the dog, Hank and Mrs. Wiggins the cows, Mr. and Mrs. Webb the spiders, two ducks named Alice, and four mice--causes quite a stir on the cross-country trek. In Washington, D.C., they even meet the president, who "shook them each by the claw or a paw or a hoof." After a series of humorous and suspenseful near misses, including a battle of wits with some Florida alligators, they end up safely back home, where Freddy poetically concludes, "And however they wander, both pigs and men / Are always glad to get home again." Brooks is hilariously tongue-in-cheek; his insightful descriptions of animal characters are always compassionate; and his subtle appeal to a child's instinct for justice is no less than masterful. As Adam Hochschild of the New York Times Book Review writes, "The moral center of my childhood universe, the place where good and evil, friendship and treachery, honesty and humbug were defined most clearly, was not church, not school, and not the Boy Scouts. It was the Bean Farm."

From 1927 to 1958 Brooks wrote 26 Freddy books--including Freddy the Detective--all focused on the well-rounded pig, who has been described by various fans as ingenious, intelligent, loyal, and resourceful. Since Brooks's books fell out of print, librarians across the country have scrounged up copies wherever possible, even resorting to photocopying the books and binding them with hockey-stick tape. Finally, to the delight of thousands, the fabulous Freddy books have been reprinted by Overlook Press. Welcome back, Freddy! (Ages 9 to 12, but great for reading aloud to younger children.) --Karin Snelson

Freddy's migration to Florida with other farm animals!
Mr. Bean's farm animals are very intelligent. They can read and some can write.A pig named Freddy gets the idea from a sparrow to migrate. He,a cow,a dog,a horse, two spiders, two ducks, and a cat all migrate to Florida for the Winter they have an exciting trip there and an exciting trip back to New York they meet the President and alligators and much, much, more. This book is full of adventure and humor.I recommend it to everyone. There are other Freddy books such as Freddy the Detactive,Freddy and the Bean Home News,Freddy and the Space Ship.

A wonderful tale of the adventures of Freddy the Pig.
The first of a series of books about Freddy. Tired of long, hard winters, the animals on the Bean Farm in upstate New York decide to go to Florida for the winter. The animals encounter burglars, outwit a group of hungry alligators, and discover buried treasure before returning to their home

The Book Which Got Me Into Reading
In 1955 I was eight, and the eldest of three brothers. My mother couldn't go to the grocery store with all of us so she'd drop me off at the children's room at the West Hartford, CT, public library, and pick me up on the way home. It was there that I discovered Freddy, and that Pig spoke my language! It was Freddy, his wonderful compatriots on the Bean farm, and their fabulous adventures, that started me out right. Freddy Goes to Florida is the first of the series, and is where I recommend starting your own adventures with Freddy the Pig. Hats off to Overlook Press for re-publishing these books in their original look.

Darling book about friendship!
One of our teaching assistants came to me and begged for this title to be added to the library collection. After checking the book out online, I ordered it. To my delight, it arrived in my book order, and I immediately read it to my 2nd graders in library. We all fell in love with Clarence and Smoky. Both characters are well written and delighfully drawn. The simplistic storyline can easily be read by beginning readers. This is a must for every personal collection!

A Special Tale of Love and Friendship.....
Clarence, a city dwelling little pig, sets out on his first big vacation to a dude ranch, out west. After a long and interesting bus ride, he arrives and meets Smoky, a very large and friendly purple horse who introduces him to all the pleasures of western ways. Smoky takes him on long rides through the mountains and canyons, teaches Clarence to play cards with the boys, line dance, and perform on the washtub in a cowboy band. They eat, nap, and even read stories together. It's a wonderful week. But as his vacation comes to an end, Smoky tells Clarence he's getting too old to work on the ranch anymore, and is going to be sold. Best friends are hard to come by, and Clarence can't stand the thought of never seeing his favorite horse again. So he uses all his bus money to buy Smoky, and together they begin the long ride back to the city. It may take years, but as long as they're together, they have all the time in the world..... Jean Ekman Adams has written a delightful story with a gentle message about loyalty, compassion, and friendship, that won't be lost on young readers. Her simple and engaging text, with its satisfying, happily ever after ending, is beautifully enhanced by her charming, bold, and vibrant illustrations, full of endearing ranch characters, and subtle, humorous detail. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, Clarence Goes Out West And Meets A Purple Horse, is a sweet and entertaining, feel good story, that is sure to put a smile on everyone's face. This soon-to-be classic, is a picture book youngsters will beg to read again and again.

Fun life lessons
Not only does my daughter thoroughly enjoy Clarence & Smoky & the colorful illustrations, but I like the idea that she's getting fun lessons on compassion, friendship & priorities. Having lived in the big city & now finding myself in "the West," I truly enjoy this book myself. (Or perhaps it's my similar tendencies to pack my favorite snacks & not enough clothes when I travel...)This is one of the few books I don't mind reading 4 times before bed!

Calvin is my role model!
"Scientific Progress Goes 'Boink'" is a collection of "Calvin and Hobbes" comic strips by Bill Watterson. The strips document the misadventures of Calvin, a small boy, and his stuffed toy tiger, Hobbes (who comes to life in Calvin's vivid imagination). In this volume we see Calvin's alter egos (daring interplanetary adventurer Spaceman Spiff, private eye Tracer Bullet), get a lesson in Calvinball ("No sport is less organized than Calvinball!), witness the rampage of the Calvinosaurus, and attend meetings of the G.R.O.S.S. (Get Rid Of Slimy girlS) club.

Many of the storylines in this book have a strong science fiction element: in Calvin's imagination, his "personal gravity polarity" is reversed; he turns into a giant; etc. But the most fun comes when Calvin decides to clone himself. Much of the humor springs from the discontinuity between Calvin's rich fantasy world and the perspective of his often frustrated parents. Through it all, Hobbes remains a witty and philosophical pal to the mischievous Calvin.

C&H is a comic strip that is both consistently funny and consistently intelligent. The art is great, especially in the fantasy sequences (check out the noirish milieu of Tracer Bullet, for example). Calvin himself is a nonconformist, a terror to authorities of all types, a dreamer and a schemer -- he's one of the all-time great comic strip characters, and "Scientific Progress" is a great showcase for him and Hobbes.

A Must Read for comic book fans!
Bill Waterson is argudably one of the best comic writers out there. Even through his retirement, he has made great books of past comics featuring his Calvin and Hobbes characters. I laugh and laugh at these comics he creates and I sometimes wonder how he comes up with such brilliant ideas sometimes with the storylines of some of the strips.

Calvin, one of his best known characters, is the trouble-making kid in the school. He is funny and imaginative and likes to make funa and games with his "real" pet friend Hobbes. Through the comics, you can see the relationship between a stuffed animal and a human.

In this comic though, Hobbes "comes to life" in Calvins eyes. The things that Calvin can sometimes get involved in is so hilarious and sometimes out of this world.

I guarantee that anyone that loves comics will fall in love with this one and should definitely buy this book to start their collection of classic comics.

All of Bill Waterson's comic books are very well done and very professional. His work is his life and it shows the time and consideration it took to make these characters come to life. Thank you Mr. Waterson for creating such a great comic and thatnk you people for reading my review!

HA HA HAA ! HILARIUOS !

A great deal going on under the covers of this book.
Friendship is the principal focus of Carol Weston's second in a series of novels for pre-teens, Melanie Martin Goes Dutch: The Private Diary of My Almost Bummer Summer with Cecily, Matt the Brat, and Vincent Van Go Go Go.

There is a great deal going on between this book's covers.
We are not only once again exposed to the diary of a fourth grader by the name of Melanie, but also lessons concerning Anne Frank's Diary, the Holocaust, discussions about Flemish artists, and illness.

The story provides a vivid insight into the turbulent pre-inner world of fourth grader Melanie.
Weston addresses the character's intense feelings with empathy and emotional engagement.
With great sensitivity, Weston cleverly parallels Melanie's diary to that of Anne Frank's, making Melanie realize how good she has it.

Weston weaves into the tale, Cecily, Melanie's friend, who joins the Martin family on their trip to Holland, and proves to be the "perfect guest," to Melanie's dismay.
Melanie's friendship and trust are seemingly betrayed, putting her in a foul mood.
However, she regrets her ill thoughts, when she discovers how upset Cecily became, when she found out about Cecily's mom's illness.

Carol Weston's treatment of the subject of Cancer is sensitively presented with a great deal of empathy, thus avoiding the unnecessary upsetting of her young audience.

Although this novel may not be as cheerful as her first one, The Diary of Melanie Martin Goes To Italy, Weston still manages to tickle our funny bone with the Dutch language:
"Zakkenrollers" (Pickpockets), "Ingang" (Entrance- like come in gang!), and with the continuing sibling rivalry with Matt the Brat, Melanie's brother.

The narrative is simple but never simplistic. Neatly and sensitively presenting the complexity of some of the issues as friendship, the Holocaust, cancer, as well as etymology, the book will prove to be both educational and amusing.

Melanie Martin Goes Dutch
I love the Melanie Martin books! They are everything children's literature should be: smart, funny, and quietly instructive. This second installment of Melanie's adventures takes us to Holland and is every bit as delightful as the first. It made me want to hop on a plane to Amsterdam immediately. You'll learn a lot about a foreign country (its art, architecture, cuisine, customs, and even language) and you'll think about significant issues like friendship, jealousy, loneliness, charity, etc. And you'll constantly laugh. Melanie is sassy, without being abrasive, and very real. Although intended for a younger crowd, these books deserve the recognition that other "diary" literature has received recently (e.g., The Princess Diaries and Louise Rennison's Georgia books). Read the book and then tell all your friends to read it, too.

Melanie Martin is the Best!
This is the best book ever! It taught me a lot about Holland, and I learned a LOT of dutch. Now I can speak a little of a different language!

Raising the Voice: A New Poet on the Loose
Reading Rigoberto Gonzalez's poetics was a feast, a delight on a snowy night in New England. Having just returned from Michoacan, I savored the poet's use of space, diction, and lyricism, mapping a necessary poetics in the American imaginary.

It is clear that the poet is meticulous with language. He uses the senses to their maximum potential and creates something wonderful that is poetry. As an aficionado of poetry, I so anticipate such caliber of poetry and prose from Rigoberto Gonzalez in the future.

Pure, Evocative Language
Rigoberto Gonzalez makes it seem so easy: his poems sing with a clear, uncluttered voice about our quotidian existence. But don't be fooled. There is great craft in those easy, flowing lines. This is a beautiful, slender book of poems; a dazzling debut.

Beauty, Craft and Responsibility
I am amazed how this poet manages to find the beauty in his community; how he manges to shape the darkness, like clay, scattered throughtout the experiences of people often left out of American literature. Fieldworkers, widows, migrants all are given room to exist on the page. The lives of these people are explored and reconstructed in a manner that doesn't scream "victim". Instead, the poet makes the reader aware of the almost casual beauty surrounding these characters. It is this insistence on protraying these characters in an "honest" light without injecting ethnocentric values into the poems that makes the poems resound, even after the pages rest on the shelf. These poems remind me of a line by Paul Monette--"people who were always singing and we were the song". Other Chicano poets have, lately, failed to remember in a way that seems new. Gary Soto, Alberto Rios, and Lorna Dee Cervantes, to me, are the holy trinity of Chicano poetry because they posses the tools of the poet: craft, beauty and a community to write about. Rigoberto Gonazlez will join the ranks of these three.

Hard hitting action
Great plot, interesting characters, and a fascinating perspective on American life--then and now. The then, for O'Neal, is the Vietnam war. Now is the culture of contemporary California and Nevada--rich, violent, out of control. Battles with the Mob in the present alternate with intense flashbacks to combat, surfacing the confusion, grief, and rage, as well as the skills needed to overcome the guerilla attacks by made guys and their henchmen. It's jarheads vs The Sopranos, and the Marine Corps wins--by a whisker.

David O'Neal Writes A Gripping Thriller
Slip into the realm of the Mafia as Doug Carlson begins his journey and pulls you along with him each step of the way. Feel the suspense, the thrill, the anticipation, the emotions, as they are written by David O'Neal in a compelling, can't put down novel. It is a novel you will remember forever.

A chance moment leads to a deadly vendetta
Doug Carlson could be Mr. Everyman before his bump with a mob leader. Mr. O'Neal leads us on a deadly rollercoaster ride which transforms his character from a peaceful citizen to a deadly adversary. I can't wait for another installment of Doug C.

Mash Goes to Maine

For once, the sequel is better
"M*A*S*H Goes to Maine" is Richard Hooker's hilarious sequel to his classic book "MASH" and, for once, the sequel is better! Living a quiet life in Maine after the Korean War, doctors "Hawkeye" Pierce, "Duke" Forrest and "Trapper John" McIntyre are at it again, trying to establish a medical hospital while fighting the snobbiest doctors in America. Funny and very relaxing, you'll love "M*A*S*H Goes to Maine".

A Fantastic Book
There are a lot of "MASH goes to..." books. This is the original and one of the best. The first sequel to MASH, this novel brings the characters from the original stateside. If you've read any of the other MASH goes to books (written by Richard Hooker and William E. Butterworth, though I strongly suspect except for lending his name, Hooker had nothing to do with) and were disgusted by how tedius and down-right horrible they were, don't let them put you off this book. This, along with MASH Mania, was written by Hooker himself and is every bit as good as the Butterworth books are bad.

Bang On the Money!
I'm from Maine, and with only modest poetic exaggeration, Hooker gets it right. At least as it used to be. I knew characters such as he portrays--Hawkeye, the Simmons brothers, Wooden-leg Wilcox and all the rest. Only Marshall Dodge came as close to capturing the true old-time spirit of Down East.

Couldn't Have Survived Without It
This book was like a beacon of light at a very difficult time in my life. I cannot say enough good about it. Rachel and the other woman who told their stories truly helped to get into the heart of what it is like to let go of a dream. This book is written by women, for women. It gets into your heart and helps ease your soul as you transition into a new life. Thank you to Rachel and all the other Almost Brides out there who are not afraid to keep on loving even after going through such a difficult time.

Must read book for those with doubts.
There Goes the Bride is a great book for anyone having relationship issues. Whether or not you have cold feet or something more serious, this book is for you. The stories from the Almost Brides are great and really give the feeling that broken engagements and relationship troubles aren't a rare phenomenon.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. It's an easy read that's full of information, humor, and resources.

A Must Read Before You Get Engaged
I wish that I'd read this before my first marriage. It would have saved me a lot of heart ache and a custody battle from hell.

This was a great book!
I enjoy Lori Wick's books because they are very enchanting- set in interesting time periods and places. They are easy and interesting to read, and have happy endings. This book is no exception. The story is good, the characters are endearing, and Wick shows how important it is to have a forgiving heart. I highly recommend this book- it is one I will want to read again.

The Best Book
As Time Goes By is my all time favorite by Lori Wick! A master piece, As Time Goes By takes you back to the old fashioned days of the 1800's. Jeff and Bobby are by far the cutest couple. The special realationship they share, and the gentle romance that is weaved thoughout the book is spell binding. The great quality of this book, along with the good plot and best characters, will be a page turner you won't be able to put down!

Sometimes love comes to the most unlikely pairs. . .
which is exactly what happens in "As Time Goes By".
You start the book five years in the past where Bobbie Bradford is cruelly treated and horribly humiliated. The next day she goes for a visit with her aunt, a visit that lasts five years.
Jeff Taylor is worried that history will repeat itself when he finds himself working alongside Bobbie, but Bobbie has come back to town with a new faith in Christ.
While Bobbie has never been considered beautiful, Jeff is finding himself more and more drawn to her every day. He learns that she is considering marrying a man for fear it will be her only offer and he starts to worry, for more than one reason.
Their friendship slowly turns into love, but neither Jeff nor Bobbie seem to realize it until it's too late.
This is an excellent book that I have read many times over, I highly recommend it.
