Certain People: & Other Stories (Coffee-To-Go Short-Short Stories Series)
Published in Paperback by Coffee House Press (February, 1997)
Author: Roberta Allen
Amazon base price: $10.95
Used price: $5.81
Buy one from zShops for: $8.25
Roberta Allen's collection of short stories Certain People begins and ends with an unnamed man whose lover has left him for a cook. Indeed, this particular character resurfaces throughout the slender volume in various stages of disintegration. He becomes, simply, the man who was left for a cook, just as other of Allen's characters become the bald man or the Italian woman or just the woman. Names are in short supply here.

This kind of short and ultrashort fiction operates according to different rules than standard short stories. Characters are not developed so much as exposed; the shortest pieces set up a situation in a few deft brush strokes, then reveal the emotional pulse of the characters caught in that moment. What makes this collection work is the painterly eye with which Allen limns in her details and the honesty of her characters' revelations.

Incredibly Out Of Date
In just four years this book is so out of date as to be worthless. Some places no longer exist, some are 40-70% more in price, both of which can be a shock when you get somewhere with your child.

For example, KidSlope doesn't exist and hasn't for more than two-and-a-half years. Elitch Gardens Amusement Park is listed in there but not forthe prices listed and they charge for parking

Frankly, I'm afraid to attempt anything else that's in this book and will look on-line for something more current. Like something from this century. One would assume that Chronicle Books would update their information a little more frequently, but I guess not. I'm going to suspect any and all of their books in the future.

Terrible
I bought this book in a bargain bin for a dollar and I wish I could get my money back. This book has absolutley nothing to do with the show, it looks like it was written in about a half hour. It's very lame but not in a funny way, a way that makes you feel sad.

A place to run far away from....
This is a sanitised, romanticised, look at Ronald Reagan's "home town" (note: he was not actually born there.) It is written by an unabashed Reagan worshipper- see his _Ronald Reagan's Crusade_.
Having been born and raised in Dixon, Illinois I really don't know where to start. I simply didn't recognise ANYTHING real about the town in this book. It was like a Hollywood set of what a hometown should be. My mother was born in 1915, and I have two older aunts that attended school with Ronald, oh I forgot, the official boyhood name is now "Dutch." They don't seem to remember any of this either. It is funny that during the whole time that I was growing up I think that I only heard Reagan's name mentioned more than three times- and never favorably.
True stories like him getting drunk while he was a lifeguard and climbing the only traffic light in the town to recite "twinkle twinkle little star", while swearing at a town cop are conveniently ommitted. I guess stories like that do not fit the "legend" that someone is trying to invent here....
