NOT what I expected
In 1996, fibromyalgia researcher, I. Jon Russell and Jenny A. Fransen put together the Fibromyalgia Help Book. Their book ex-plained--as much as possible--an illness that has no known cause and therefore no known treatment.
Dr. Russell is one of the handfull of researchers who are looking for the answers. Accordingly, his book began by explaining in simple terms what seems to be happening within the fibromyalgia patient's body.
He talked about the antidepressants that seem to lessen the pain of fibromyalgia. And then he went on. He told us about all the interconnecting systems in the body that work differently in a fibromyalgia patient's body. He talked about the exciting neurological, hormonal, enzymatic, cycles that just don't work the same old way in a fibro patient's body.
Russell acknowledged that the tricyclic andidepressants and selective seritonin reuptake inhibitators that are standard first treatments may not relieve all symptoms all of the time. Accordingly, he mentioned some of the other drugs that practicioners have found help with individual symptoms.
Finally, Russell showed us the way new research is bringing us more and more information about fibromyalgia, and suggest treatment and management options for the future.
I expected THIS book, written by a similarly-credentialed doctor who is right in there treating fibromyalgia patients and studying them would pick up where the Russell/Fransen book left off. I expeced a short description of what fibromyalgia is and is not. I expected to see tender-point diagrams. I expected a human touch, since Dr. Goldenberg's wife has fibromyalgia.
Most importantly, I expected to have the continuation of the research information last heard of in 1996 in the Russell/Fransen book. Why is there more Substance P in patients' spinal cords--but not in their brains? Can we neutralize the Substance P and remove pain?
The book I just read would be a good start for a newly diagnosed person with fibromyalgia. It is warm, human, and factual. From the viewpoint of someone who has lived with this disease for 30 years, Dr. Goldenberg's introduction smells of sugar coating and looks like rose-colored glasses. I expected more meat and less froth from one of fibromyalgia's principal researchers.
It has been six years since the Russell book was published. Isn't it time to pick up the thread and explain what has been found since then. Wasn't Dr. Goldenberg the person to write it?

Very good information, I have this illness, great book!
I wrote the book -beyond the dark cloud, road to recovery from chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction.I know how much work it takes to write a book,I do feel that DR. Goldenberg, went beyond just writing this book, he also feels for any one who has this devastating illnes and really wants to help others.By reading this fine book,I did feel I know DR. Goldenberg, because he also puts his heart into it.Thank you DR. Goldenberg for writing this wonderful book.Thea Schlosser, author, founder of chronic fatigue, and immune dysfunction media awarness, board member of the anty aging network, staffwriter for the ,international councel for freedom of health.

A "must read" resource on Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia, the most recent book by the author Dr. Don Goldenberg, an internationally renowned medical expert and researcher in the field, is an absolute "must read" for patient, families, and friends of people with fibromyalgia. Equally important, it is a valuable resource for physicians who work in this field as well as family doctors, primary care physicians and specialists who will all be educated by this sophisticated guide to understanding, and caring for people with fibromyalgia. I found it balanced, well referenced, personally touching, informative, and realistically hopeful. Dr. Goldenberg's sections on "Myths and Truths" at the end of each chapter highlight the most important information in a succinct and relevant format. The clinical vignettes allow the reader, patient and physician to gain insight into the many manifestations of fibromyalgia and related syndromes. Overall, I would give the book the highest rating of ***** (5 stars).

Franklin book full of false accusations
Fourth Down and Life to Go is a largely one-sided account by a bitter and angry man who lashes out at many innocent people in addition to those Franklin believes he was wronged by. It's a story of turmoil within a coaching staff that got out of hand and ultimately led to the collapse of that staff. While the book is Franklin's personal view of the inside of a college football program, it sadly misses the mark due to false accusations and attacks on anybody associated with the program. If anything, Franklin's account is a lesson in how not to handle things as an adult when disagreements arise in the workplace. Franklin would have been better served to sticking to reporting the facts and stories that transpired. His interjection of paranoid and bitter beliefs and views about situations, circumstances, and others dramatically reduces the credibility that the book could have otherwise had.

Entertaining, ...and now I want "The Rest of the Story"
This book was very entertaining and provided a solid look into the workings of UK, Inc. (aka UK Athletics). The book not only provides details on the ugly events rarely seen or heard outside of the inner circles, it also shines lights on many of the positive aspects of the program.

There were several stories (good and bad) in the book that, while I knew it possible for them to be true, my mind wanted to force me into disbelief. Fortunately, I have the good luck to know some of the many individuals mentioned in the book, so when I hit some of the stories, I simply picked up the phone and called. Without fail, every one confirmed the story in question! This leads me to believe the remaining stories are just as accurate. (Which I should have anyway, I've also had the honor of knowing Coach Franklin and he is pretty much a solid stand up guy.)

When all is said and done, the book is informative and educational, but it leaves me wanting for one more thing...the rest of "The Story".

Thought Provoking Lessons about Life
If Tony Franklin says it is true you can take it to the bank. This book is more than just an account of the Mumme Era. The approach that Tony has used to tell his story is set forth in lessons that apply to all walks of life. You do not have to be a football coach or fan to understand the valuable lessons brought forth in this book.

Some will read this book and say there is no way that what is written can be true. I truly believe what is said in this book about the Mumme era is a correct accout of what happended. Tony Franklin is a man of character who as his book states is a stand up type person.

Read the book with an open mind. Many will not know the names of the coaches and players mentioned but you can relate many of the lessons taught to your personel life. The things that happened at a division 1 SEC school will boogle your mind.

The most fun I've had with my pants on!
This book is the SHIZZNIT! And I really mean it! I never knew there was so much fun stuff lurking around in my own back yard. I felt like Spock and Kirk when they found that Undiscoverd Country, you know what I'm sayin? If you don't, I wouldn't worry about it. Just plunk down your Shekels and buy this book. You won't regret it.

A smart and funny look at some most unusual worlds
Throughout the nearly 200 pages of this book, John Mitchell finds himself facing an age-old dilemma: can a family find places to visit that won't leave at least one side of the parent-child team screaming for mercy? How do two young hipsters entertain their kids without hooking them up to the corporate theme park teat?

It's a tribute to the Mitchells' parenting skills that they and their children derive as much fascination and enjoyment from talking to hens at the zoo as they do from wandering through a World War II-era submarine (although the boys get as much pleasure from crawling across the lined-up bunks and pretending to be moles). Between John's smart, clever prose and Jana's gorgeous, fluid illustrations, 4 Go Mad will make you want to visit more places and spend time examining their beauty, their pathos, and how different age groups derive different meanings from them. A smart, fun read.

A TOTAL joy!
From the moment I picked up this book, I was hooked - and I don't even live in Massachusetts! The adventures of the Mitchell family not only entertained me - they opened my eyes to a small part of the vast array of hidden oddities out there in the world just waiting to be discovered and explored!

And what explorations they have! Every chapter uncovers yet another amazing locale - each more fascinating then the last.

Harry and Hugo sound like wonderful children with vast creativity and an immense amount to offer - who wouldn't be with parents like these?

Love it! Love it! LOVE IT - keep up the good work!

A Lemon
First impression: Poorly laid out. The contents are organized by the name of the trails. The first three "names" are: "Bike & Hike", "Bike Route -1", "Bike Route -2". There is an ameturish attempt at a map of the whole state with the trails in dark blue and some sort of numbering system. Unfortunately, the numbers are only marginally proximate to the routes (unless they are written over them -YOU try reading black type on a dark blue background!) The map and the legend for the whole book are hidden in the preface - I guess they think you won't be referring to them very often. Some trails are broken up into haphazard sections - I guess to fit the map scale - which varies only slightly from map to map. There is no way to find a trail by either location or length. Unless you know the "name", you'll have to scan the index (guess where it is!) looking for a "vicinity" you recognize. An example: Looking for something east of Cleveland I find one in the vicinity of "Ashtabula/Warren" (if you look at a map you'll find those cities are 45 miles apart) go to the page indicated and ...no, you won't find that map. Leaf forward and it'll show up. Then you can read all about the "future plans" for the trail. You might overlook the information on the length of the trail or the trailheads since the author hides that info in his painfully stiff prose. Show up at the trailhead and there is a beautiful asphalt trail for about 0.06 miles before it turns into golf ball size crushed rock (you'll need new tires - and leave the kids home!) but only for a mile or so. North of there, its all as described, but he obviously didn't do his homework. He seems more interested in what the planned trails will look like someday than what you can use today. Also no good information on traffic, elevation changes, or trail surface. Caveat Emptor.

More Like "Lemon"aide!
Biking Ohio's Rail-Trails is a very well put together book. The best part I like are the maps! They are so easy to read, yet, they offer a reasonable amount of detail. I also like this book for the reason that if I would like to know just anything about any trail, if offers "just the facts!" However, if I would like to know more details, it also offers an additional paragraph or two about the trail's main attraction features. I just only hope that Shawn E. Richardson will do books like this for every state!

Excellent quality bike trail maps for cyclists!!!
This book is excellent for any cyclist who would like to find any major bike trail throughout Ohio. As long as anyone knows how to read a map, any cyclist will be able to find any trail with no trouble at all!!! A unique thing about this publication is that Ohio is apparantly going to a Bike Route trail numbering system. However, if a trail such as the Wolf Creek Rail-Trail is known as "Bike Route-38", the trail is listed under both the trail name and the bike route number; as you're out there biking that particular trail, you will actually see the bike route number signs along the trail! A great book for family outings! This book also contains information for other bicycling resources as well. No other book like it!

Honoring the self
I bought in April this year this book, together with Nathaniel Branden's "How to raise your self-esteem". I did not know these two authors. I read about two pages of this book and then put it in an corner. Then I opened Branden's book; to date, I have read seven of his books; some of them, being out of print, were very hard to find. Read both authors and decide yourself.

Excellent simple to understand message
Dr. Anthony does an excellent job of breaking down the spiritual and psychological makeup of humans into understandable delineations. Then he gives useful, doable, techniques that assist you in 'reprogramming' yourself into what you consciously choose, not what others may have chosen for you. His message is positive and exciting, short and simple. There is a strong underlying spiritual message that places a Higher Power at the center of all positive change. This book is not preachy, new agey, religious or zealous. It's very matter of fact, and I sense no ego from the author, which is usually the case with these types of books. My only complaint, is the 'packaging' of this book. Sort of like something you'd see on the shopping network. The cover reads like a screeching two-bit snake oil 'self help' salesman, so unlike the inside. The only reason I haven't bought copies for everyone I know. I guess you can't judge a book by it's cover, and hey, I picked one up the first time, didn't I?! My copy has been read and reread, dogeared and hightlighted. A wonderful book.

Seems So Obvious Once You've Read It!
The message in this little gem seems so obvious, once you've read it. All change, positive and negative, begins with you. If you want to change some aspect of your life, start by changing yourself, first. That's quite an empowering belief! this is a wonderful book that's easy to read and striking in its scope.

Conant, Benjamin fans will be disappointed
There is lots of good dog talk here (in fact that's the only thing that got me to finish the book) and the plot is intricate enough, but the tone is just dull. I'm sorry, this writer did a really good job of crafting her story, but there is no joy, no sense of fun, very little suspense and most of the characters are just awful. The only likeable characters are the protagonist, her mother and her boyfriend. What dreary lives they lead, since there are no interesting, funny, fun, smart or charming people for them to have as friends. The book is so workmanlike it was a real chore to finish it. It's really not fair to compare this writer to Susan Conant and Carol Lea Benjamin, since her work is unique, but they each also have a series of novels with a single female canine-loving protagonist who solves murders. The difference is that they are fun. Both Conant's and Benjamin's characters are funny, fascinating, delightful people who get themselves into some difficult scrapes. O'Kane's characters are none of those things. Sorry, I wanted very much to like the book, and I love her dog theme and the constant dog talk.

Fast moving and entertaining
What a relief to find a dog-lover's mystery without all the voluminous asides of Susan Conant or the occasionally too cutesy Laurien Berenson. (Not that I haven't read and enjoyed both those author's books). Enjoyable dog training information, and the mystery really moves along, with plenty of characters to keep one guessing, especially as negative information about each suspect keeps turning up. Nice characterizations; both the protagonist and her mother are appealing.

Fun mystery for dog lovers
There's never a dull moment in dog behaviorist Allida Babcock's neighborhood. First she's called on to help Cassandra and Paul with Suds, the Siberian husky they're fostering, and her pups. Then divorcing couple Edith and Trevor want her to mediate in a custody dispute over their silky terrier, Shogun. Allie subsequently finds Cassandra murdered in Edith's back yard, and Shogun is nowhere to be found. "Ruff Way to Go," like "Play Dead," its predecessor, is an entertaining cozy whodunit that dog lovers will enjoy. The series should appeal especially to those who like Susan Conant's mysteries: Allie's world-view is as dog-centered as Holly Winter's; humor, though more low-key, is much in evidence; and there's an abundance of canine lore, including lots of useful care and training tips.

Didn't really stick
I know I read it... but it didn't really stick. She's got a lot of cute acronyms she uses for everything. They get a little tediuos when you read the whole book and try to remember them. "Feel the Fear and do it Anyway" is a MUCH better book.

self-improvement collectible
I enjoyed this book which was full of Sam's personality! The quotes are wonderful, so I added a lot to my collection. The "blockers and builders" give you a plan and are true-to-life. Usually I keep my reading list private, but I'm recommending this book to the rest of my family. I even contacted Sam about including some of the activities in my newsletter and she kindly gave permission. Her other books are next on my reading list!

turn you loose
Sam Horn has come up with a manual for attacking the myraid of things that keep you from progressing in life. What's Holding You Back is a collection of pearls of wisdom backed by relevant illustrations drawn from the author's years as a speaker and seminar leader. The reader is presented with suggestions for improvement in areas ranging from communication skills, attitude, making friends, the art of conversation, developing and maintaining relationships and strategies for dealing with personal demons. The book offers something for every reader. A friend in his early 30's said that reading the book changed his life. A professional associate said that the only things it won't help are serious personality disorders. Sam's suggestions range from the common sense to universal truths. I found that although I already practice many of the things suggested, there are still many others that I either forgot about or simply don't make use of. I now read the book three to four times a year, as I believe that repetition helps integrate the wisdom Sam imparts into more areas of my life. The book is easy reading, with a workable 30 day completion plan. If the book were required reading for everyone, the world would indeed be the better for it.

Do Dogs Go To Heaven? Eternal Answers for Animal Lovers
Published in Paperback by JoiPax, Inc. (18 December, 1999)

Just Short of Five Stars
As a Universalist pastor and animal rights activist of many years, I have to say that this is an excellent book. The cover is absolutely adorable and worth the cost of the book alone. Much of the material presented regarding the souls and spirits of animals is very similiar to my own, which has been posted on the internet for a number of years, however, to Jean Holmes credit, she presents it in a much less confrontational manner than I usually do.

So, if I like this book so much and love the cover, why have I only given it four stars instead of five? Well, I feel that the author fell short of presenting, of what could have been, one of the most important books of our time. She is knowledgeable enough to discuss "apokatastasis" in her book, which indeed offers evidence of animals and all of creation being eventually being restored, however, I feel she has greatly missed the full understanding of this teaching, as she seems to hold a more traditional view of hell, by stating it is eternal. Of course hell can not be eternal if, as scripture says, it will be thrown into the Lake of Fire. Such an oversight is, to me, unfortunate.

Jean Holmes, like myself, has spent a lot of time researching the original Hebrew words of various texts involving animals, I just wish she had done the same for the Greek word "aion", and other Greek words, which are mistakenly translated in English as "Eternal" and not as a "Period of Time", as they should truly be rendered... and perhaps she could have seen the truth of "apokatastasis". Of course if those reading this review also believe in eternal hell and are animal lovers as well, then I am sure that "Do Dogs Go To Heaven?" will be a five star book to them....

A Comfort
After the loss of my cat I was happy to find a book that told about God's plan for the animals. It is reassuring to know that we will be with them in heaven someday.

Inspirational, comforting and informative
This book is a must read for all pet owners, and future pet owners. It is inspirational, first and foremost. Then, it offers comfort and solace to the pain of grief. And, there is much information to be had, as well. Worth a try, and you will read and re-read it, as a source of reference and comfort.

Chaos in the Cemetery!
There was chaos in the cemetery of Elvis internment. Riots at Rudy's mortuary! And then there was that nasty business of Eva Peron's globe-trotting body.

This is the perfect Halloween Coffee Table (or Coffin Top - if that's how one decorates for the Holiday) Book. The author tells tales of two dozen dearly departed and how they got there. At The Beginning of each End, she gives "Vital Statistics" varyingly including age at and cause of death, survivors, previous "close calls," and "Last Words" ("I'm so bored with it all" Sir Winston Churchill, "I'm going into the bathroom to read" Elvis Presley) There are other headlines at the time of death, concise and interesting bios, and, of course, details of funerals and send-offs. It includes many glossy black and white photos.

The book notes questionable cause (or perpetrator) of death for Marilyn Monroe and Martin Luther King, Jr. but then ascribes JFK's death to the lone gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald. When Pigs fly! And, speaking of pigs, Muppets sang at Jim Henson's memorail service, at which no one wore black. Reviewed by TundraVision

Great stories and tales
Great book on funerals of some legendary people. In particular I remember the one about the funeral of Jim Henson. I wish it had a tad more photos (there were a lot but I like tons) but it's great for anyone into funerals and wants something on their cofee table..

Death Revisited
Call this 'Death and Burial Rites of the Celebrated'. This is an interesting take on the funeral rites of many famous people. I won't go into detail because this has already been done more than adequately in the first customer review. I was particularly fond of the manner in which the material was presented. I felt that the written accounts of the funeral rites discussed within presented a verbally visual sense of being there.
The subjects discussed were from quite diverse levels of celebrity. The information presented was in some cases as much reflective of the historical time frame during which they occurred as well as the individuals being honored.
This was a very interesting exhumation of information long buried and forgotten.

Florence Walking Guide: Where to Go , Where to Eat, What to Do (Just Marvelous Walking Tours)

You can figure Florence out on your own!
This set of walking instructions is terrific if you are very limited with time in Florence. These walks will take you around the major sites; however, Florence is an extremely concentrated city. It's not the behemouth that London/ Rome/ or Paris is. Therefore, with any basic map (Insight makes an excellent one), most travelers can plan a basic route. I left this map in the hotel room, and once oriented to Florence (which takes a day) was more than capable of finding these points and major streets on my own. This little foldout is for the traveler with very litttle time or interest in planning his/ her itinerary. The times given for the walks are fairly accurate, though.

Great walking tour of Florence - off the beaten path
Jeanne does a great job taking you on wonderful walking tours of Florence. If you are looking for a detailed tourist guide, this isn't it. It was obvious to me that Jeanne spent a signifigant amount of time developing this guide and her recommendations for walks, gelato, trattorias were right on. She led us to places that the locals go! One of our best meals was a trattoria she recommended!

Thanks Jeanne!

Perfect guide for the relaxed traveler
This guide is full of wonderful tips for planning your day in Florence! As a casual traveler, I enjoy wandering the streets of a new town watching how the people pass the day and moving slow enough to allow time to look around and really see the neighborhoods. The guide gives the phone number to call for reservations at the Uffizi saving hours of time on line. We walked up to a special entrance with our reservation and were admitted in less then five minutes! I have friends who have waited on line twice and were never able to get inside the Uffizi. The walks are organized and the details explain sites that would normally be unexplained as you hurried from the Duomo to the Ponte Vecchio to Santa Croce. In addition, the local trattorias listed were wonderful. I have also used the Venice Walking Guide with great success and I recently ordered the London and Paris Walking Guides for my next trip. This guide is money well spent.
