Mixed feelings
The first time I read this book, I was more conservative than I am today and I knew nothing about this alternate lifestyle or the people who live it. I found this book stunning. I laughed, cried, and was swept into Barbara's pain.

Unfortunately, somewhere along the line I became more liberal and when I picked up a copy of this book at a yardsale last year, thinking it would be interesting to read it again, I found myself wincing. I understand Barbara's pain; still, unless you are a seriously conservatively religious person, her sheer devastation will be hard to understand.

Yet Barbara has a gift. Her diary is full of it. For those parents stunned by a child's revelation, this book will be helpful.

Help in the Dark
Barbara's willingness to share her experiences with others has helped my wife and I through the dark years of three teens. A healthy way to look at life's troubles and go on - not "just survive" but go on into the fullness and humor that life also brings. Generally I highly recommend it to all, but I especially recommend it to those presently on their own dark road. Who was it that said "We read to know we are not alone?" Thanks Barbara for letting us know that we are not alone.

Uplifting, most helpful
For persons struggling with news of a loved one leading the homosexual lifestyle this book is most helpful. Barbara is the true Christian when it comes to acceptance and understanding, but in this book she admits her frailities on learning the news from her son.

You will laugh and cry with her, you will understand and you will learn to wrap yourself in God's comfort blanket.

Comprehensive and well-written
As a "student" of venture capital and entrepreneurship, I was delighted to discover this book. It was the book's title that first caught my attention. And, I was not disappointed. The author covers the subject of alternate financing in detail; IPOs, angel investors, venture capital, overseas financing and incubators. Often, banks are unwilling and/or incapable of understanding the unique requirements of a budding entrpreneur's financial needs; for example, in the software industry, most entrepreneurs can only offer intellectual property as collateral; this does not fit well with a bank's traditional mode of collateral ("If I cannot see it or touch it, it does not exist"). In this regard, the author offers well-defined chapters on helping borrowers prepare well for the reality (chapters 7, 8 and 9 - Valuing Your Business, Presenting Financials and Preparing Business Plans, respectively). One note of discord - while it is impossible to research and include every single source of information, the author should have included some of the well-established and well-known sources, in the appendices. Glaring omissions in Appendix A include The IndUS Entrepreneurs, a leading VC Club in Silicon Valley; Appendix B should have included the well- established entrepreneurship programs at Stanford University and University of Washington. Finally, I am glad that the book's retail price is below $25 (and often available at a disount); this tremendously benefits entrepreneurs and those individuals researhcing alternate sources of funding, for their business ventures.

Touched by an angel
Comprehensive, direct, resourceful.

Two thumbs up for anyone looking to start or grow their business.

Best on the topic, and I have read many.
I have read a lot of business books and this one gave the best insite into the topic. Very easy to skim and get what you need. If I would have stated with this one I could have saved myself a lot of time.

An interesting read...
The story was a good one. It didn't hold me as quite a lot of her works have, but it is entertaining and fun to read and if you are a fan of her works, as I am, you will enjoy this one as well.

A fascinating adventure~!
I must say that I absolutely loved this book. I found Faree's "growth" and learning experiences to be quite enthralling. I was particularly impressed with his reaction to the wing scraps.... Quite intriguing. The character interaction was well written. The imagery was very convincing. I felt as if I were in another world while reading this book.

Great fun; fast read
This is great fun to read. Who ever thought of ASKING people what these experiences were like? Genius. Most of the essays are only a page or two long - quick read on the bus or in the bathroom. Some are too short (albino is about 2 paragraphs?) - none are too long, most are just right to give you the feel for the event without too much detail. Nothing heavy or meaningful here, just the facts according to each survivor!

Enthralling: Live Vicariously through the the Writers!
I'm a lady who loves to read Esquire for the quirky and fun but highly intelligent subtle humor and peek behind the scenes of the male mind. Esquire has presented us with a glimpse into some things we'd hope never to do... or, have always wondered about. You get the insider info. on (for ex.) having OCD (hilariously, the editors repeat the same picture around the border of this story), being attacked and almost ripped apart by a grizzly and (ew!) surgically and sensationally going from a male to a female and from a female to a male. Some of the experiences I did not want to know about (I'm sensitive) but others were just cool to imagine: like winning the lottery. Buy it, read it, or hey, use the library once in a while and check it out. Peace.

Well done ayse oge !
Ayse Oge took a very complex subject feared by many of us, subdivided into smaller elements and prepared a handy guide. This guide is the product of her extensive experience in this field that she has acquired by working in different global organizations. She has also done long and tedious research and interviews on the subject. The guide also contains handy forms to evaluate your company's potential global success and a long list of usefull references. Congratulations for a very well done guide ,Ayse Oge !

Go Global to Win by Ayshe Oge
"Go Global to Win" by Ayse Oge contains many invaluable tips for any business owner planning to take his or her business into the global market, set in a logical and concise framework. Ideas are presented and expanded upon, and then summarized in one or two sentences. There are sections dealing with types of businesses; use of the Internet as a resource; and discussions of several agencies that aid businesses that are trying to go international, as well as some private institutions and international organizations that do the same. The author identifies six "ingredients" for a successful business: quality (necessary for any business); employee empowerment; teamwork; customer satisfaction (again necessary for any business); innovation; and leadership. The author's ideas on employee empowerment are interesting; many companies ignore ideas and suggetions from employees, regarding them at best as inexperienced--often to their own detriment. Regular "brainstorming" sessions with all members of the company are advised. Entrepeneurs who want to get into the global market are advised to be sensitive to cultural differences--e.g. selling beef burgers in India where cows are sacred, is a no-no. There are chapters devoted to the exact methods needed to get into the international market--and on how to collect the money due. The book ends with a questionnaire for business owners planning to go into global marketing that will set them up for international commerce.

A very useful book
for most parents. It goes into the why and the how of house rules, consequences, and follow through; very important. The use of natural and logical consequences is explained too. Gives specific examples of misbehaviors and different ways to deal with each. Ways that will TEACH the children why rules are fair or important. Ways that will reinforce your expectations when they decide to test your rules without having to resort to the sad, "Because I Said So." Children sometimes need to be reminded who is in control but the parent needn't be a dictator. If you want to teach your children, this is a good resource. If you like to tell your kids what to do, you probably wouldn't like this book.

"Must" reading for all parents.
Go To Your Room!: Consequences That Teach was written specifically for parents with problems on getting their children to do what they want them to from! Shari Steelsmith offers addresses 59 specific bedtime misbehavior ranging from chores, homework hassles, and tattle-telling, to whining tantrums, and backtalk. Go To Your Room! focuses on consequences, and draws upon applicable, practical, workable, effective parental responses to juvenile non-compliance from a variety of sources, including parents, authors, and educators. Go To Your Room! is "must" reading for any parent that every felt the need of a common-sense guide for improving their child's everyday behavior at home or in public.

Mary Eileen Wells
Who is MARY EILEEN WELLS? Where do you come from? Are you from West Virginia or Kentucky?

What a great idea!
Tired of cooking every night? This book teaches how to start a Meals Co-Op with several other families---each cook only needs to cook one night during the week. On the other nights, dinner shows up at your door---prepared by someone else! The authors detail the steps necessary for setting up your own Meals Co-op with friends or neighbors. The book includes: frequently asked questions, tips on getting started, planning your meals, food safety (or, how NOT to make your neighbors sick!), recipes, questionaires, and more. I really like the concept. Homemade to Go is attractive, well laid out, and lots of fun. :-)

IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE
JOANNE CERUONE'S PORTRAYAL OF BIG CITY LIFE AND COMPLEXITIES OF MODERN LIFE IN GENERAL IS AN INTERESTING STUDY. IT IS NOT THAT SHE HAS REVEALED ANYTHING NEW, BUT HER CHRONICLING OF ITS VARIOUS ASPECTS OF LIKELY EVENTS IS A REMINDER FOR ALL OF US OF WHAT COULD AND DOES HAPPEN ACROSS BIG CITIES OF THE WORLD BECAUSE WE OFTEN TEND TO BE OBLIVIOUS AND INDIFFERENT TO OUR SURROUNDINGS. THE WRITER SEEMS TO HAVE TOUCHED ON MOST ISSUES FROM STREET CRIME TO INTERNET FRAUD AND MOST IMPORTANTLY HER IDEAS HOW TO FACE AND FIGHT THE DAY TO DAY PROBLEMS. IT SHOULD BE AN INVALUABLE REFERRENCE BOOK ESPECIALLY IN SENIOR AND THE FEMALE HOUSEHOLDS. PUBLIC LIBRARIES AND SCHOOLS SHOULD KEEP IT AS A READY REFERENCE BECAUSE THE WRITER HAS ASSIDUOUSLY ASSIMILATED VALUABLE INFORMATION. IF NOTHING ELSE, THE BOOK WILL ALERT YOU AS YOU WALK AND TRAVEL. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE BOOK ESPECIALLY TO CITY DWELLERS, YOUNG OR OLD.

Absolutely amazing.
This book has every possible information you can think of on not to become a victom of a rape, abuse, and much more. I recommend this book tp all of the female readers out there who wouldn't mind a little advise from an expert who knows how to deal with tough and unpredicted events. I bought one for my wife, and I have to admit, I started reading when she was not around.
I just hope she doesn't read this review.

Kermit Rides Again
Back in my day, we had what was called "Nursery School." Unfortunately, I was a drop-out. All I can remember is that we played Cowboys and Indians with the Kindergarten class, and they always got to be the cowboys. Naturally, at the end of the game the Indians all got shot. I also remember falling off the monkey bars and getting my mouth rinsed out with soap. Sheesh!

So what does this have to do with the delightful little book, "I Can Go to Preschool?" Just this: Had I been able to obtain a copy of this book, which does such a great job of dispelling fears about preschool, I might have been able to tough it out and stay in school. Kermit sure seems to like it. Any kid facing preschool would do well to prep with the frog before that first big day.

If nothing else, the happy times that Kermit has can help you to forget about your own, somewhat less happy, experiences.

Great book for introducing preschool!
My 3-year-old just started preschool, and this book was a wonderful introduction. It is written from a child's perspective and uses clear, simple language to describe a typical day at preschool, including rules and activities. It made my child feel comfortable about preschool before her first day. The adorable, captivating muppet baby illustrations enable her to read the book to herself, which she does over and over!

Miles to Go: A Personal History of Social Policy
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (October, 1997)
Author: Daniel Patrick Moynihan

When his 1965 report to President Johnson, "The Negro Family: The Case For National Action," identified the breakdown of the traditional family as a major cause of African-American poverty and crime, Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan was roundly attacked by liberals for "blaming the victims." Since then the debate has shifted in his direction and he has been in the forefront of many debates on welfare. His latest book on the subject mixes historical perspective, personal reminiscence, and his comments on the state of welfare today. His focus remains the family, and particularly the problem of illegitimacy and single welfare mothers, whom he believes trapped in dependency by the current system. Moynihan is hard on successive administrations for failing to heed his warnings. Contrarily he berates the Clinton administration too for its attempt at reform in 1996, predicting dire consequences.
Average review score:

A wealth of wisdom
I must first note that this book is extremely poorly edited. It oscillates from current commentary to previously published essays and articles without significant distinction. This along with an introduction that occupies a third of the book makes for a frustrating read. Moreover, Moynihan doesn't always state what he is trying to say so the reader must be alert for not-so-obvious implications.

Having said all this, this book is a true resevoir of wisdom. In tackling issues from moral decline to welfare reform to the drug war to "Reaganism," Moynihan both parts ways with contemporary liberalism while offering sharp critiques of past and current policies. Ever the social scientist, Moynihan is quick to demonstrate how "conventional wisdom" can be utterly wrong while at the same time dismissing those who would sieze on simplistice generalizations of scientific research in furtherance of radical agendas.

A difficult read but well worth it.

A call to arms for a political social science
First, let's realize what this book isn't. It is not a collection of previous essays, although it excerpts heavily from a number of essays, both from the 60s and the 90s. It is also not a memoir.

It's an argument for a different role for the social sciences in policy making. First, it's an argument by repeated example of the predictive power of the social sciences. And, second, it's a call for social scientists and the government to start doing work seriously on the issues of the day.

So, first. He's telling us that we can do social science that tells us things about the world that we live in. Like what? One, government supervision of the economy from WWII to the present day. Two, his observation in the 70s that the Soviet Union was already in the early stages of collapse. Three, his argument that the illegitimacy rates where (1) going to skyrocket and (2) that it would be a problem. He tells us that these were not mysterious phenomena and that had the data not been ignored, public policy could have addressed them appropriately. This is important, partly to remind us of it, but also to challenge some writers on the right, such as Thomas Sowell, who argues, essentially, the opposite.

Second, this book argues that both the social scientists and the politicians need to take social science seriously. And, furthermore, part of the problem is the liberal professionalization of "Do Gooders". Why wasn't illegitimacy attacked in the 60s and 70s? Because some of the people on the left really are as morally squishy as the people on the right say they are! They were afraid to push a family structure, especially a "traditional" one.. Furthermore, he argues, that this phenomenon had been described by Durkheim in the Rules of Sociological Method.

This book is, in the end, a call for a scientifically-informed moderate social policy. A social policy that is not afraid to speak of "values" and, indeed, "family values", but is also understands the sociology behind the modern/urban/liberal context. Furthermore, it's proof-by-example that it is achievable.
