A good introduction
Although sometimes not as easy to follow as "Learn to Play Go" (frequently refers to earlier diagrams), this book is a good introduction to the game. Discusses pretty much the same topics as "Learn ...", with a little more detail regarding connecting, and shows us an actual game with commentary, which was very helpful in getting a better sense of how the game is played. "Learn to Play Go" is also an excellent place to start.

A practical book for the biginners and skilled players
I have played GO for a long time.
Although this book is a introduction to the game, it is also a great help for skilled players.
It's usefull studying again the actual method and the meaning of the moves.
It is great fun reading the historical story of the Honnoji Temple affair related to the tripple ko.
Anyone of you might found it important to study the josekis and memorise them.
But I found it important to replay the actual games.
Learning all of the moves by heart, then repeat to put stones to the end of the game.
This book has an excellent example game, which was played between Cho Chikun and Kato Masao, who is a rival of Cho.
It's usefull studying and also worth learning all of the moves by heart.

A great book for those just starting out.
I'd recommend this book if you don't know much about the game yet. It covers the rules of the game and most of the basic tactics. After reading it, I felt I had a good foundation to build on. Although I still have a lot to learn.

One thing especially nice about the book is that the chapters are separated by short articles describing a little of the history and culture of go and how it developed into it's current state.

The only drawbacks were that the author went a little too fast once or twice and the book lacked any questions for the reader to solve his/herself. (Well, it had three.)

Got to Go Now: An Oregon GI Writes Home During World War II

You will enjoy reading Edsel Colvin's story
Edsel Colvin's letters and commentary will appeal to anyone who has fought in a war, particularly WW 2. Edsel was an unofficial war correspondent when his Dad submitted his letters from overseas to the local weekly paper. His letters brought some of the difficulties of soldiering to the home folks. Edsel was careful to not detail all of the gory details as he did not want his Dad to worry too much.

Edsel story begins with his life as a fire lookout following high school graduation in 1941, his brief time in college before being drafted, and then his experiences as a scout in an infantry squad of the 103rd (Cactus)Division. His style of writing is easy to read and makes the reader feel a part of the story.

Edsel returned to Gold Beach after the war, attended the University of Oregon, married and started a family and taught at Gold Beach High School where he had graduated in 1941. His abilities were soon apparent and he was named Principal of the Union High School and then Superintendent of the school district. His influence made the school district one of the best in the state and he was respected and admired by both faculty and students.

I've known Edsel for over 35 years and our three sons were privileged to attend Gold Beach High School while he was the superintendent.

I'm sure you will enjoy reading his book, "Got to Go Now"

A Look Back at What Made America Great
Got to Go Now: An Oregon Gi Writes Home During World War II
by Edsel V. Colvin, Paul Colvin (Editor)takes you back to a time when people knew what it meant to be an American. It also revealed the emotions, motivations and situations created by war. I have had the honor of knowing many veterans and have noticed in listening to them that war is a very personal ordeal. Large nations having rather monumental disagreements are most often settled by individuals making sacrifices; time, limbs and sometimes lives.

The book paints a vivid picture with words. The heat of California can be felt as well as the cold of the German winter. I enjoyed the prelude to the war about the summers spent at the lookouts and the backroom at Frank's store. It gives you an insight into the soul of a man. Of the things that really matter and are important - family, the close friends you remember for a lifetime and taking a stand for the good.

The simple things matter most - living to see the next day, a hot meal and dry socks. Read the book.

A Very Large Slice of Life
By not telling the story with a standard narrative and just doing an occasional splicing comment or paragraph in the flow of letters, I had the feeling I was living through the descriptions in the time frame experienced.

Those weeks on fire watch in the mountains wondering about a future path, the busy-busy days at a small college trying to keep schoolwork, job, family and friends all juggled, the hardness of basic training followed by the double course load at Oklahoma, a picking up of pace as the time for overseas draws nearer, the time in the line and all the changes that happen from heavy combat to trying to survive the winter to being in the hospital to finding the little comforts one can to the sadness of the death of the Russian in the Wehrmacht, the winding down of the war, the wait to go home and the final obstacle in San Francisco with the loss of the personal effects.

It all seemed to play out in real time as I read those letters and since there were so many unexpected turns both good and tough, it had a ring of reality that the movies never seem to capture.

The book is as true a snapshot of real life's twists and turns as could be. The fact that the main character in the story came out a good man for all the events he had been through is a story of the innate goodness of a man holding true despite life's vicissitudes and in the telling it offers a ray of hope for all who read and see that despite the struggles they may have in life, that they too can keep the essential decency and soul in their own lives.

Excellent, Interesting and Engrossing
This is an excellent history of slavery in South Carolina with a focus on the unsucessful revolt led by Denmark Vesey. The strength of the book is the history of Vesey and the evolutionary process that leds him to his death.

What is most intriguing was the discussion of Vesey's rejection of the New Testement as a guide for his actions and his use of the Old Testement as a guide. The book deals well with the issue of the effect of the masters use of the Christian faith as a justification for slavery on the slaves and freemens spiritual life.

The only flaw in the book was the authors obvious admiration for Vesey. Not that such admiration is not deserved, but it tended to color some of the more difficult issues in Vesey's revolt. For instance, a major controversey has arisen concerning whether as part of the revolt the whites of Charleston were to be massacred. The author does not deal with the claim other than to dismiss is as illogical. However, this dismissal is insufficent given the hate and feellings for revenge that the slaves must have felt toward their masters.

All in all, this is a very readable history important events in American history. A good read.

Outstanding Work
This was an extraordinary book. Douglas Egerton does a marvelous job of telling the different lives of Denmark Vesey. The book is extremely well researched and tells the historical truth of Vesey's life. The author does a wonderful job of finding the true story of Denmark Vesey and incorporates intriging insights into his life. This is a wonderful book that illustrates what life was like for a dynamic slave who turned free. Egerton tells Vesey's story in a fascinating way and does a great job of recapturing Vesey's life. The author tells of how Vesey was a strong-willed, highly intelligent leader who had an ingenious plot to help slaves and free blacks to truly become free. The author shows how fascinating Vesey was even though his plan failed. This is a marvelous book and I highly recomend reading it! It is an absolute joy to read!

STRONGLY Reccomend Reading!
This book is dynamic and I highly recomend reading it. It is wonderfully written with extaordinary prose. The author does a superb job of bringing the readers into the time period and a wonderful jog of telling Vesey's story. Engaging diction and syntax keep the readers alive. There is not a dull moment in this book. Every page is filled th wonderful insights surrounding the times of the book. This book is a must have for people of all interests.I highly recommend reading it and sharing it with a friend. Douglas Egerton does a fascinating job of telling the history of Vesey's life and atmosphere!

A keeper!
I so enjoyed reading this book. I love the length of Duets, just right for a Friday night bubble bath-plus read for each half, but in the past writers have had problems with too complicated stories for the length or not complicated enough, and the humor has sometimes been just too low for my tastes.

This book was just right. The characters were fully fleshed out, competent professionals that I could respect and whose sparks and complications sounded real enough. Oh sure, there were a couple of too-cutesy bits (the strip tease???) but they were disposed of soon enough.

I liked the situations, I liked the chemistry between both couples, I liked the smart, crisp writing that refused to let me put down the book.

Ms. Drew, I definitely will keep an eye out for future books by you!

Keeps the giggles coming -- Highly recommended
ONE BRIDE TOO MANY and ONE GROOM TO GO, two new releases combined into one Duets book, tell the humorous path of matrimony for twins when their grandfather Marsh demands that they marry. Refusal to marry means that he'll sell the Bailey stock and their mother will lose control of the business.

In ONE BRIDE TOO MANY Cole Bailey crashes a wedding reception looking for a bride of his own. When he unexpectedly rescues the bridesmaid's dress from permanent damage, he's surprised to see the changes time has made to a former classmate. Tess Morgan's transformation leaves him breathless, but a man can't date a "pal." When Tess looses a bet to him, Cole persuades her to play matchmaker for him. Friday nights will never be the same as he manipulates and monopolizes his way through the weekends and Tess sits home alone, or worse finds herself on a double date with him.

In ONE GROOM TO GO, Zach Bailey figures that if he can hold out until his brother and new bride are pregnant, he can get off the marriage hook with his grandfather. He hopes that his grandfather will be amenable to passing his shares of stock to a new Bailey, thereby ensuring that his mother remains in her current position in the company. Until news of unclehood arrives, Zach convinces the host of a home improvement show, Megan Danbury, to becomes his "fake girlfriend" in exchange for saving her career. But Megan is trouble personified on screen and off. She needs him to keep the station owner happy and her career intact, but she'd really prefer to tell him what he can do with his hammer and stripper.

Jennifer Drew provides fans of romantic comedy two amusing romps in this Duet selection. The bad-boy Bailey twins find themselves yielding to the demands of the heart with entrancing characterizations and a fun plot. A quick, light read filled with witty dialogue and outrageous situations, this Duet selection comes highly recommended.

Fantastic and Funny!!
One Bride Too Many--Jennifer Drew

Cole Bailey needs a bride in order to secure the family business. Tess Morgan is an old friend. She's a girl...surely she can fix him up with some of her friends. But as Cole dates one woman after another, looking for that perfect someone, he finds none of them can even begin to compare to Tess. What are the odds that Tess will see him as more than a chum...what are the odds he can make her love him and see that she's the only woman he needs, and anyone else would simply be One Bride Too Many?

One Groom To Go--Jennifer Drew

When Megan Danbury orders Zack Bailey to strip, she didn't mean his clothes, she meant the paint from the cabinet. Her show is called Do It Herself, not Watch-the-big-Strapping-Man-Do-It, but watching Zack, with or without his shirt, seems to be appealing to her demographics (any female between 1 and 100). As a matter of fact, watching Zack appeals to Megan, too. Sparks fly on the set and between the sheets as Megan orders One Groom to Go, please!

Jennifer Drew pens two light-hearted romps down the matrimonial aisle--fast, fun stories guarenteed to leave a smile on the reader's face!

good
A good book if you like mystery. Good to read because it is about young kids and there is no violenc

Silly Nathan
In To Grandmother's House We Go there are three main characters. They are Nathan, Rosie, and Kevin, Their dad was dead so then when they find out their mom might be dying too, they decide they have to do something. They decide to go find their grandmother's house. When they get there finally they start hearing strange noises. They start a quest to find out who else was living at grandmother's house along with them, Uncle George, and Grandma.
I liked this book a lot. It is especially good for kids, either boys or girls. It is very interesting. I could hardly put the book down the whole time I was reading it. One of the reasons I like this book a lot is that it is very realistic, but also very fiction because most kids wouldn't be able to go to their grandmother's house by themselves. I gave this book 5 stars.

An ideal book of fun and adventure for children.
As always,Willo is able to capture feelings and create characters that are identifiable to all of us. Who could not enjoy this book?

Ignore Your Teeth and They'll Go Away: The Complete Guide to Gum Disease

better late than never!!
All I can say is I wish I had seen this book a few teeth ago!
Fortunately there is still time to save the rest of my teeth with the clear advice of Dr Sydney. I take the book with me to my periodontist to make sure he is up to date!

Fear has always kept me away from the dentist, but no more!
When I was told that I had gum disease, I got really scared and of course wanted to ignore the advice of my dentist and the obvious signs in my mouth that something was wrong! Fortunately, I read Dr. Sydney's no-jargon guide and now I know that most of my fears were based on fiction and not fact. RECOMMENDED reading for cowards and the enlightened who want to save their teeth. The easiest visit to the dentist I ever had!!

Ignorance Is NOT Bliss!!
I thought I could ignore my teeth and the would NOT go away...I was wrong! After loosing two teeth, I went to my dentist and he said "you need a periodontist!". Fortunately, I read Dr. Sydney's book BEFORE I got there. What a relief to find out that even though I had lost two teeth there was still time and modern therapy to save the rest. My treatment is almost completed now and the guide and my periodontist showed me that while ignorance is not bliss there was still time to get my gums healthy when you have the true facts presented. I recommend this book to all the cowards among us. It's easy to read, comprehensive and according to my periodontist accurately represents today's state of the field. I have given the book to a number of my friends who told me their gums were bleeding but thought that was normal. This book is an eye-opener for those who have had their heads in the sand. Take it with you on your professional visits it really helped me to understand all the treatments.

Not a favorite
Though my toddler's a HUGE Sesame Street fan, this book never gets so much as a second glance. I thought the unusual shape and lift-the-flap features would be appealing, but for some reason it its not a favorite on the bookshelf.

The book doesn't include much text, simply descriptions of where in the fun park the characters are headed. But if your child simply loves looking at illustrations of the characters and is fascinated by flaps, then perhaps you should give it a try.

Kids love it
My one year old cannot get enough of this book. He loves to look at the different Sesame Street characters and lift the flaps to find Oscar over and over again.

Let's Go to the Fun Park
My daughter loves this book. It has been very handy when we go somewhere in the car (or bus) and I can ask her to put her seatbelt on - just like they do on Sesame Street - works everytime! My daughter loves this book so much I am buying another for my son when he gets to that age!

Paris Walking Guide: Where to Go, Where to Eat, What to Do
Published in Paperback by Just Marvelous (March, 1997)

very helpful guide
Just returned from a trip to Paris. Found this little guide very helpful. Used this along with bigger guide books, but this is the one we carried with us every day because it was so easy to fold up and carry in a pocket. The walking tours were very good and the suggestions about where to stop and where to eat excellent.

Extremely helpfu, convenient, comprehensive, easy-to-use
We've used Jeanne Oelerich's walking guides in Rome, Florence, Venice, and Paris and have found these truly unique guides to be the single most helpful sources in planning our day and time around the places that we want to visit. They are lightweight, compact, and remarkably comprehensive, with large, easy to read maps of specific areas, showing all the major sights, and many less obvious ones; good restaurants, great views, and special treats, such as small craft shops or great ice-cream. There are often museum floor-plans, brief histories of the area, travel and packing tips, ad glossaries. An incredible bargain!

This made our trip!
This was given to us by a friend prior to our trip. I barely looked at it and thought "well, this might help". The evening we arrived in Paris we decided to plan our next day. I pulled out this guide and realized this was our only hope for seeing all we wanted to see in a timely manner. The most valuable piece of information Jeanne gives in this guide is where the Metro stations are located and what train we need to catch to get to our desired destinations. Couple this guide with the metro & city map provided by the metro stations and probably your hotel and you have a fail-safe tour of Paris! Not only did we see all we wanted to see but we did it in an efficient manner! We travelled with my in-laws and they couldn't stop complimenting me on what a wonderful tour I "put together"!

I highly suggest Walk C!

A good resource for those making the big move
San Francisco is beautiful city which exacts a steep toll from newcomers. The absurd vacancy rate means one of two things for apartment hunters: compromise or luck. Frustration is guaranteed. Guinot's book helps in many ways. It proves to be a fruitful source of contact information for resources that meet the most common needs that newcomers have. The descriptions of the neighbourhoods is an excellent way to begin discovering the city and narrowing down the areas within which to search for an apartment. While particularly ambitious in scope, the book does not provide an in depth treatment of any one topic. Some of the specific information, especially about rents and fees, is already out of date. However, this was a book that was quite helpful; and anyone moving to the city needs as much help as they can possibly get.

A great resource on moving to San Francisco
This book was just what I was looking for. It is a great resource on moving and apartment seeking in San Francisco. I wish there was a little more detail about transportation and travelling outside of the Bay Area. Otherwise,a great guide. I also appreciate the web addresses. It will be most helpful.

A fantastic book
Ms. Guinot's book is without comparison. If you have plans to move to the Bay Area or if you live in the Bay and are looking for a new place, her book is the must-have guide to keep by your side at all times. Her overview of information is fantastic, and she manifests her impressive knowledge of the Byzantine streets and byways of San Francisco. I highly, highly recommend her book and I eagerly look forward to her future works. I should add that she is the epitome of style and grace.
