"The great thing about the shareware between a couple is that the network is limited to the two of you," writes humorist Bob Smith in "Wolf Whistling in the Dark," the first chapter in his second collection of interlinked essays. "No one has ever understood me or known me better than Tom, but recently we seemed to have forgotten each other's access code." The novella-length examination of the breakup of Smith's long-term relationship is one of the highlights of Way to Go, Smith!--but each essay has its gemlike moments. Although some of his epigrammatic quips are gay-specific ("Gay men have a tendency to examine an attractive body almost as if, by some miracle, they might have to identify it later when it turns up in their beds"), Smith's recollections of his childhood experiences at home and school would strike a chord with any reader. His sexuality and the experiences that stem from it are combined with these anecdotes in an unapologetic but also unassuming way that teaches all of us to accept Bob Smith just as he is (though it's hard not to like such a handsome and witty guy)--and, hopefully, to accept others around us for who they are as well. --Ron Hogan

Middle of the Road
I had high hopes for this book. It started off really well. The stories of Bob's break-up from Tom was actually interesting to read, and was a story I could follow and invest in. I was hoping for a happy ending at the end--perhaps taking this sad event and finding the humor and of course life lessons in it.

Halfway through the book, Bob resorts to childhood memories. It almost seemed as though he was writing two different books, one of memories and the other of his current life. I felt somewhat lost at times. The stories were entertaining, but didn't seem to make sense being plopped down in the middle of the rest of the current day situations. He ends the chapter with "Mom, I have a date." What a great line! It allows the reader to find out with who?? Is he moving on? Is he the man of his dreams? We never get to find out.

Instead, he moves quickly into his childhood, relating stories that are amusing in their own right but highly out of place. It almost makes me wish that the author would take a chance and finish that third book, finish the second book, and rerelease them.

He then skips back to current day with his misadventures of dates...which sort of leaves me wondering what was going on with the childhood chapters in the middle of the story. They didn't seem to go with the rest of the text.

It was enjoyable...but it left me wanting more.

Deep and comical, all in one breath
Bob Smith is one of Buffalo's better creations! He is funny as a performer and yet non-threatening. His latest book is delightfully funny in places and deep and reflective in others, especially as it deals with the breakup of his 10-year relationship. My partner and I saw Bob read from his book recently in Buffalo and he did a superb job! The mail order dildo entrepreneur story was hilarious! I must also add that Bob looks terrific since he's been working out in the gym so intensively lately! I wonder if he is trying to make Tom envious or what!

Great Book!
What a great book! I've read all 3 books Bob has written (Growing Up Gay, Openly Bob & this one.) He's a terrific writer. As I read his books, I think I'm reading my own life's story. I can really relate to his experiences -- love, relationships, family & friends. I looked forward to this new book because it felt like I was catching up with an old friend. Several times I caught myself laughing out loud at something he had written.

I definitely connected with him when he wrote about cutting out pictures in the 4th grade -- his excellent eye/hand coordination as demonstrated by his superb cutting skills did not serve him well when he played baseball. How true!

I've heard Bob Smith perform a couple of times. He's as terrific in person as he is on paper. A truly funny, personable guy!

Way to Go, Smith, is a definite read - as are all of his books. I can't wait until the next one is printed!

He Answered All My Questions!
After researching every Peace Corps site on the net, I have finally began to continue my reading in local book stores and libraries. I read this book in one sitting and found many answers to the questions I had and even questions I hadn't considered yet. Sometimes the information gets a little redundant, but this book could have been a little better if Banerjee provided his readers with more personal volunteer stories. But all in all, if you have questions this book has plenty of answers and you won't walk away feeling like you wasted your money.

FINALLY! A GREAT book on the Peace Corps!
I got this book yesterday and read it straight through. It is one of the most informative and useful books about the Peace Corps that I have ever read. As a former PCV in Cameroon, I can honestly say that Dillon Banerjee has successfully captured "the Peace Corps experience," which is no easy task. He gives very clear answers to some very tough questions. This book is sure to become an instant classic, "The" book to read. I would (and will!) recommend this book to anyone interested in joining the Peace Corps.

The straight dope for Peace Corps applicants
Peace Corps, who've evidently dropped "the" from their name, is a mystery, wrapped in an enigma, wrapped in a tortilla (or flat bread). In this reviewer's opinion, the official info sessions offered by Peace Corps don't tell the whole story about the operation.

Fortunately, Dillon's book does. He answers questions you were too embarrassed to ask during info sessions; questions you need answers to in order to make a fully informed decision.

A tremendous resource for Peace Corps applicants or anyone thinking of becoming a Peace Corps volunteer. We've needed something like this for a long time.

If it had nothing else of interest -- and it has plenty else of interest - Dillon's discussion of the application process, and how to keep it moving along, would be worth the cost of the book alone. The book pays for itself, demystifying the Peace Corps experience, giving you Peace of Mind.

If that's not enough for you, writers will appreciate Dillon's prose; clearly, care was taken in the writing and editing of this book. It's eloquent without being flowery or pompous and is a joy to read. Dillon's either a terrific writer, has a terrific editor, or both. Too frequently, editors have a reverse midas touch -- turning perfectly good prose into dumbed-down dross.

Bravo.

One of our favorite bedtime books!
I purchased this book for my daughter when she was two. She is now almost three, and this is still one of our favorite bedtime books. My daughter enjoys (and relates to) the little boy's not wanting to go to bed, and the stalling that is involved. My daughter gets a kick out of the vrrooming car sound. We love to explore every detail together on each page of the charming illustrations. My daughter loves to point out how sleepy everyone gets as the story moves along, making her sleepy too. I especially love the part of the mother and the ending!

It works.
This is one of our family's favorite bedtime books. The illustrations are fabulous, but the increasing drowsiness of the text, paced very much like a lullaby, carries the day (or night). It is guaranteed to have me yawning by about page 4, and catches my son's attention even on nights when his toy trains and trucks have far more appeal than the prospect of bedtime. There are some wonderful lines in the text, like the parenthetical notation "(She was a very strong mother.)" that have a way of making you feel good about the Battle for Bedtime. It's a book that's meant to be read out loud. I've bought several extra copies to give as gifts to other parents, and recommend it without hesitation.

A "bad" baby's journey into night
It doesn't take long for the trouble to start in "The Boy who wouldn't go to Bed". Confronted with the age-old parental imperative of "Bedtime", appalled at the absurdity of such a command when "it's still light", and utterly unintimidated by the power disparity involved, the baby retorts with a steely "No!", hops into his car and roars off into the night, leaving his mother far behind. At the outset the illustrations are suffused with a beautiful golden light but as the journey progresses that light begins to fail and we are left to reflect on the wisdom of the baby's decision.

This baby is a man of action who is bound to appeal to any child who's ever confronted an "unreasonable" bedtime, or any other "unreasonable" parental dictat. His dynamic response shows from the outset that he is a force to be reckoned with who will not kowtow to authority figures, no matter now mighty. The stage is set for a showdown more reminiscent of "Cool-Hand Luke" or "Braveheart", for it is clear our hero is prepared to match himself against any adversary. No whining, crying or ineffectual complaining here, but a forthright declaration of independence by the baby. Yet as the story progresses it is clear that independence has its price. The baby's long journey into night brings him up against all kinds of dark, mysterious characters, each with their own, sleep-related agenda. The night world beyond the bedroom soon proves resistant (or at least too sleepy to respond) to the baby's efforts to command it and as the tale progresses even the baby's faithful car threatens to fail him. The baby searches in vain for reliable (or at least wakeful) companions to share his adventures but without a Gandalf to help him assemble a "fellowship" his journey to the world of darkness threatens to be a lonely one. And just when it looks like he's really on his own, it becomes apparent that something or someone is pursuing the baby, and not until the book's grand finale do we see who that pursuer is (though knowing parents can probably guess!).

The book's message, if it has one, is that there are primordial forces in this world that even a baby with a car should hesitate to match himself against, and that the rhythms of nighttimes and bedtimes are beyond the power of mere children to challenge. Like King Canute, by book end the baby has learned an important lesson about the power of nature and that we all have to sleep sometime.

Helen Cooper conveys that lesson with incredible skill. Her beautiful, award-winning illustrations capture the light of the failing day perfectly, and the progression from gold to dusk to gloom enhances the sense of a journey from one realm to another. And at the end of the book we see that the strange creatures and settings our hero encounters have their analogues much closer to home.

Like Scorcese's "After Hours", this book is perfect at conveying that sense of things closing down for the night, and the terrors of being caught outside alone, far from home, in a strange territory full of characters who won't conform to our ideas of what is proper night behaviour. It also reminds me of "The Phantom Tollbooth", another child's toy auto journey into a fantastic night world.

This is a wonderful bedtime book that is great fun reading to small children (7 and below). The Breugel-like level of detail in the illustrations are an endless source of fascination for small children. Each time you read it there is liable to be a new detail that catches their interest and provokes discussion, though sometimes requiring an adult to improvise explanations for certain illustrations that aren't apparent from the text. The text is simple but fresh, with stimulating repetitions, and lots of opportunities for interactive dialogues between child and reader. The tensions in the story and the sly humour of many of the illustrations and situations make it exciting to read while the relentless repetition of its main theme - the importance of sleep - can be quite sleep-inducing. I've almost fallen asleep reading it sometimes, yet by no means from boredom. It is so easy to identify with that baby, and share his frustration as his efforts to find fellow travellers fail. Right from the opening bedtime showdown I can tell the children I read it to are thinking "Been there! Been there!" We are all torn between rooting for the baby yet worrying about the implications for bedtimes everywhere if he succeds .

I would strongly recommend this book for anyone involved with small children.

Bestselling author Hugh Prather has a knack for putting his finger on the pulse of America's emotional and spiritual angst. In The Little Book of Letting Go he gives voice to the internal chatter that prevents us from enjoying or pursuing our true desires. "Within our human heart we all feel the call to be simple, to be present, to be real," Prather writes. "Yet throughout the day, the world urges us to be at war with ourselves and each other: 'Be resentful about the past.' 'Be anxious about the future.' 'Be dissatisfied with what you do see.' 'Be guilty.' 'Be important.' 'Be bored.'" Prather compares these thoughts to the stale clutter in the back of our refrigerators. By cleaning out our minds, we allow room for fresher and more nourishing foods for thought.

In this little book on mental cleansing, Prather uses personal stories as well as step-by-step exercises to help readers understand the rewards and the process of letting go. For example, in the section on letting go of guilt and hurtful actions, Prather suggests that for at least one day readers "rise from sleep and make your purpose only this: 'I will go through this day harmlessly. I will hurt no one in my thoughts or in my actions, including myself.'" Prather includes numerous similar kinds of assignments in all of his chapters, including how to let go of..."Mental Pollutants," "Misery," "Prediction and Control," and "Spiritual Specialness." --Gail Hudson

Great Ideas
I thought this book had amazing ideas, and the approach is so simple and clear. I'm only 23 and I didn't think I had that much to let go of until i really looked more closely at my mind. I realized that lots of the problems I was having in relationships and school had to do with my past. I like Mr. Prather's approach because he's not into blame. You take responsibility for your own stuff, and you learn how to let go of the stuff that's not helpfull. I also like the imagery and the stories because they made the concepts easier to understand. Sometimes these self-help books seem like they're written for an older generation, but this one doesn't. It's funny and usefull and I think it's something I can use the rest of my life.

Actually Helpful
I had pretty much gotten jaded about self-help books when I picked this one up, but it actually helped a lot and I finished the book feeling better about myself and my life. One of the things I liked was that there's humor which makes the book much more accessible and fun to read. I also like the spiritual aspect and the way it's presented.

The most important thing to me was that Mr. Prather's approach actually worked! I bought the book because of the title and because I had just gotten out of a relationship that I was having trouble letting go of. I started trying some of the exercises and amazingly I found myself stopping all the endless thoughts about what I wish I'd said, etc.

I definitely recommend this book because I also had the feeling that Mr. Prather actually believes this and practices it. I love the whole imagery of cleaning out the mind, which when I started doing it made me feel so much better!

Throw the Rest Away
I have been buying these types of books since the 'I'm OK, You're OK' era. Now I'm having a book-burning party in my backyard because this is the only occasional guide to self-help and sane living I will need from now on. The author wastes no time with feel-good bunk in cutting to the chase. Two main themes he develops are 1) treating everyone with compassion and 2) recognizing the difference between that tyrannical little ego called 'you' (the one that demands respect from all and sundry) and that wide simple and undemanding eternal 'you'. Thanks Mr. Prather for giving me some extra shelf space.

Time to Let Go
Time to Let Go by Lurlene McDaniel is a fiction book about a teenage girl, Erin, who lost her sister, Amy, in a car accident. After the accident Erin started getting headaches and she ended up going to a therapist, Dr. Richardson, to see why she had the headaches. Erin's big question that eventually gets answered is "Do you think I'll ever get well?"
After Amy's death her house became quiet unless her parents were fighting. Erin enjoyed acting and dancing so she went into the school play. She soon met a guy named David who really liked Erin, but she didn't like him.Erin started getting along with him so they started to date. They both were involved in the play and they were the stars of the play. Erin's headaches were less painful when she hung out with David, but that wasn't always the case.
I would recommend this book to teens and adults who like a little romance and medical books. I chose this book because I enjoyed other books by Lurlene McDaniel. This book is 162 pages with lots of action on each page.

Another masterpeice by McDaniel
I recently finished this book and it was REALLY GOOD! I love all of her books that i have read! Its about a girl who's younger sister recently died. She thinks that shes over it, and that shes accepted her sisters death. But she still continues to get immobilizing headaches that started after her sister's tragic death. A therapist who she begins to see helps her to solve the mystery behind her headaches. Soon she begins to wonder- am i over Amy's death, or is it Time To Let Go?

You'll Love This Book!
This is a romantic book about a high school couple, who got off to a rocky start. I loved this book! Random House Inc. published the story. The genre of the book was fiction. It was an interesting book and Erin's sister had passed a few months earlier and she had suffered from severe headaches ever since. Erin had met a boy named David at her drama club. They got off to a rocky start, but then they became pretty good friends; going places together, Erin met his parents. She enjoys being with him, but whenever she is around David the horrible headaches come on. Doctors don't know what is wrong with Erin. These headaches that she gets are so horribly intense that they are almost unbearable. Erin seems to always think of her sister while she is with her new friend David, she finally figures out what reminds her of her sister. Read this book to learn if she will ever overcome these horrible headaches. I would recommend this book to somebody who has some type of medical issue, they may be able to relate to what Erin goes through during the story. A person who enjoys reading about romance would like this book too. This book was not only about romance, but it was also entertaining because it made me want to read more. I wanted to learn what was causing her headaches and if Erin and David would stay together.

Be a Go Getter at all costs?
The one good thing I learned from this book is that to be successful you have to live with the motto "it shall be done".

While the author thinks this is a great motto to live by, I question if this is really a good motto for someone to live by.

For example if you want to make 10 sales each day, and you work 14 hours a day to make it happen every day for years on end - thereby forgetting about your family and relationships, you may have attained wealth, but you will not have a balanced life.

Ok. You get my point. It's good to be a go-getter, but you need a balance too.

I highly recommend you read Cheryl Richardson's book, Take Time For Your Life, together with this one.

Zev Saftlas, Author of Motivation That Works: How to Get Motivated and Stay Motivated

A great motivational book
If you've read anything by Spencer Johnson or Ken Blanchard and enjoyed their work, you need to read this precursor to the latest rage. This is far superior even if it is a bit dated.

Do you have the blue vase in your life? Are you in the "get it done" club?

Fun, interesting and with enough twists and turns that you will enjoy the quick hour you will spend reading this book. You'll want to let all your colleagues and friends read this (but not your competitors).

It Shall Be Done
This book is a must read for businessmen, educators, coaches, and anyone who feels like they are in need of a lift! The parable in this book is a great motivator. In today's world where most everyone is trying to find the easy way out and pass the buck, this book teaches you to be on the lookout for what may seem like a dubious task, but in actuality is a "blue vase" test! I read this book in about two hours, easy reading! Should be required in all schools.

Very academic book
I have lost my mother four months ago. I was desperately looking for words of confort and also ways to understand my feelings and what I was going through. Even though I consider it an excellent book, it lacks something important for us mourners, the spiritual part. However if you are looking for a book that explains in a scientific way the feelings and emotions one can go through this is a good book. But again, it would be better to be read with another book that gives confort during such a tought time.

A Blessing in Time of Need
...After our son died I was devastated. I needed to understand the feelings that I was now experiencing and how to cope with them. This book was the clearest and most compassionate resource on grief that I've found. Dr. Rando discusses every unique type of loss a person could face and then goes on to explain why you will feel as you do. The last part of her book is dedicated to helping you understand how to resolve grief and heal from such loss. So far I have given away 4 copies of this book to friends and family. I even gave one to my sons psychiatrist. They have all had high praises for the book. Personally, I don't know how I would have survived this past year without it!

a big help for a difficult time
I found this book to be really helpful. I normally don't read
"self-help" books, but after the loss of my Mom I needed some
guidelines; something to help me figure out if all my feelings
were normal, or if I might be headed in the wrong direction.
It also helped me to understand what other family members were
going through. The only thing I didn't like was the book title.
I think if I had gone to a book store, I wouldn't have chosen it.
But by being able to read other reviews here, I picked this book,
and it was a good choice. I definitely recommend this for anyone
trying to cope with a loss.

Excellent book
This is THE book to get on going down on a woman. Most other sex guides don't cover the vast amount of ground the author covers, and even though I knew a good amount of the anatomy stuff I learned a whole lot about how to use my mouth and hands. It's essential reading for guys who want to know exactly how to make women come and what happens physiologically when they do. Plus the sections on using extra tricks with cunnilingus like blindfolds, sex toys, fantasies, and advanced stuff makes it a book I keep using. And she's a great young writer who brings a breath of fresh air and a savvy sense of style to the world of sex writing.

Ohhhhhhhh Yes this is sooooo goooood !
This book is a must for any bedroom library. My wife and I have been stocking our shelves every few years to keep things spicy. I have and I know my wife is throughly enjoying me trying out new ways to stimulate our "close contact sports". The book is frank, well written, it doesn't attempt to steer clear of this subject in any way. The suggestions for other reading were also a help. Buy this book and ENJOY !

This book is excellent
As a straight male, I found this book highly informative, helpful and my wife has a smile on her face! Finally a book written by a woman about women telling you stuff that most women fail to tell you.

Past it's time.
This was probably an ok book for it's day. Now over 3 years later it is very dated. It talks alot about building for the long term but all of the author's company websites have either changed hands or closed down.

The great asp section that folks raved about years ago - well 1 or 2 are left of them. It is understandable that internet companies die - but these were held out as the survivors of the internet crash of 2000.

Pass on this book - Save the money and go to Wendy's for burgers.

Finally a book about E-Business written for me.
What a treasure chest of real-world ideas and practical principles. Finally, someone has written a book for me, an average entreprenural type guy who knew all along that making money online was not about programming! I would call E Business to Go the "Cliff's Notes" of Internet books. Don't get me wrong, it's not abridged (256 pages in length). But just like when I was in high school stuggling through Homer (lo, so many years ago), this makes all the other books seem like they were written in Greek. EBusiness to Go makes doing business online seem irresistably easy, without sounding patronizing. It's direct and to the point, but loaded with all the meat, and not fluff.

There are loads of tools in each chapter, but I especially appreciated the case studies and explanations of principles of online success that are applicable to any online business today, (especially the one about "limiting your online menu", very wise.) The Appendices in the back are over fifty pages of incredible resources, and really could have been another book by themselves. But the main thing is, this is the first author that really understands small business, and really is walking the talk. I hardly ever watch TV, and almost never have the morning news on. But today I caught the author on Channel 12 in Portland, and in less than three minutes, he had me. Whoa, does he love the little guys just starting out. Whether it was serendipity or divine providence, I consider those ten minutes of TV news this morning life-changing. I've already checked out some of the ASP site-builders he reviews in great detail. (Another invaluable part of the book.) If you are a small business, or like Thompson says "any one from a single mom to a person looking for extra income" this book is for you, and E-Business is for you.

Finally. The book I'd been waiting for.
Until two days ago I had never heard of E-Business To Go, or the author. Then, while driving into Minneapolis scanning radio stations, I heard somebody say "lean and mean E-Business profit machines" or something to that effect, so I tuned in. The speaker was G. Liam Thompson, and from that moment on, I was hooked. Here was someone saying what I've been thinking for years...that an entrepreneur like me can have an online business without having to spend a fortune, or buy into all the HTML programming. That you don't have to be a "techno-freak" to have an E-Commerce store. Finally.

I picked up the book that afternoon, and couldn't put it down. He gives some awesome principles, but doesn't mince words or speak like a geek. For me, the site-builder reviews alone were a goldmine. I was looking for a certain kind of store-builder that wouldn't cost me much money, but still have me online and selling my products fast, with room to grow. The book had at least a dozen that sounded like a match, and I'm already into two of them. If your looking for a single handbook that guides the non-programmer type of person into a profitable online store in less than an hour, without any cost, this is the book. Things he says and the resources provided would have saved me hundreds of hours, if I had the book before. I don't know what radio station I was listening to that morning, but I'm glad I heard about E-Business To Go. It's loaded with tips and tools, and has some hilarious stories about dotbomb kinds of mistakes, which helps me know what not to do. I give it an A+.

Average review score:

A very basic problem book.
This book has a set of problems aimed at the beginning player. It would probably be ideal for someone who had _just_ learned the game. I am 26k* on IGS, and I felt that the problems were a little too easy. It would be wrong to say that I learned nothing from this book, but I don't feel I received $15 worth of new information.

I would advise anyone who has some experience with go and is considering buying this book to think about starting with volume 2 of the series. If it turns out to be too complicated, you can come back to this one.

Beyond the basics...
This volume goes beyond the basic mechanics of the game that are covered in Volume 1. The focus is now on life and death problems (though not extremely hard ones), and other localized situations in go. However, it does not cover influence or whole board situations much. However, the book's focus is useful for players looking to drill themselves.

This is a good book for players who have gotten beyond the basic mechanics and patterns of the game, and wish to enhance their board reading ability.

Must Have Introductory Problems
This is a quote from the great go site Sensei's Library ... :

"I was reading volume 1, and noticed how well the author introduces Go concepts to the complete beginner. For example:

Problem 1: capture
Problem 2: capture using the edge of board
Problem 3: capture using a corner, capture with a stone in atari
Problem 4: capturing multiple stones
Problem 5: local area may have unequal numbers of stones?
Problem 6: capturing multiple stones with a group in atari
Problem 7: as above, but away from an edge
Problem 8: capturing two groups at once
Problem 9: capturing big groups
Problem 10: capturing a big group with stone becoming atari"

Yes, some of the problems are simple, but there is something to be learned from all of them, regardless of the difficulty level. Even if some problems are simple to solve for a beginner, spotting them in the first place, specially in a real game situation is not always easy.
