Jonathan Coleman uses the city of Milwaukee--one of the most segregated in the country--as the lens through which to consider race in America. Black Milwaukeeans suffer an unemployment rate of about 20 percent, the result of the city's losing 60,000 jobs between 1979 and 1983 as it changed from a manufacturing to a service economy. The great success of Long Way to Go is that it shows us the human faces that lie behind the statistics, people like Georgette and Maron Alexander. After losing his high-paying manufacturing job, Maron Alexander found work paying $6 an hour, while his wife makes $5.50 an hour as a cook. They manage to feed their children and are sending their oldest daughter to college, but, at times, Maron Alexander can't help thinking that with his service insurance policy, his family would be better off if he were dead.

a compelling look at a complex and troubling issueWhether or not you're comfortable with the progress of post-King (Martin Luther or Rodney) race relations in this country, you should read this book. Seeing through the eyes of residents of this northern city will change how you think about race in the U.S., and it will affect what you know about class and opportunity as well as skin color. Recounting his sojourn along the color line with characteristic reserve, Coleman doesn't pretend to have all the answers; but his questions, at the beginning, at the middle, and at the end of Long Way to Go, are the right ones

Can't read without having a smileThis book gives you a whole new outlook on living a christian life and how we handle it. As a husband and father, it has strengthened me in all my abilities. It also wakes you up to the fact that we can't be everything, but god can use us in his own way, how we are. I wish Dr. Faulkner only had more titles to dive into.

returning to health after being the target of a terroristThis is an incredible first person account of a woman who was the selected target of terrorists on an Egypt Air Flight because she was holding an American Passport. She was taken outside of the plane onto the top of the stairs and was shot in the head. Her body fell down the stairs onto the tarmack and she was left there for dead. People picking up her body unexpectedly discovered she was alive and rushed her to a hospital. The remainder of the story is of her amazing recovery coupled with personal tragedy and overcoming obstacles to teach herself to read again(she was able to do this based on her special education background/experience) in spite of her prognosis.

Minnie and Moo Go To ParisYes, this is a children's book, but then again, it isn't. I dare any person who calls themselves a grown-up to read any of the "Minnie and Moo" books and not get the urge to laugh out loud. Go ahead, though, and find a kid to read it to if you're too self-conscious to laugh out loud by yourself. There are plenty of opportunities to use your scary voices, animal noises and bus-driving-through-a-carwash sounds. Oh, yeah, and kids will love it, too.

A highly enjoyable story, especially young cat loversMister Got To Go And Arnie is a charming picturebook by Lois Simmie about a grey cat named Got To Go, who enjoys a very comfortable living until a small but noisy and incessant barking dog moves in nearby. This vocal rival animal disturbs Got To Go's pleasurable naps and more; what is a cat to do? Enhanced with the engaging artwork of Cynthia Nugent, Mister Got To Go And Arnie is a highly enjoyable story, especially young cat lovers.

A warm tale for lovers of cats and the weather in VancouverAn overwhelming sense of snugness and warmth pervades this rich tale of a streetwise feline that decides on a home. Anyone familiar with Vancouver will appreciate the lush, wet illustrations, and lovers of cats will recognize this headstrong little fellow. Despite Mister Foster's declarations that the cat "has got to go," there is, of course, only a feeble effort to make it so. Eventually, this erstwhile street urchin is the hero of the day, but only after an "altercation resulting in defenestration." The interloping raccoon is vanquished, and the trip to the vet's cements this cat's residency. I recently read my copy (which was published under the title "No Cats Allowed") to a class of 21 first graders. For the length of the entire reading, which was pushing it for their attention span, there was not a sound nor distraction. Any cat lover will appreciate the interplay with Mister Foster, and his dignified resignation to his fate. Highly recommended for a classroom read, or a rainy day under the comforter.

mom's the toilets colgged!kid disasters! how to fix themThere is no parent in the world who cannot identify with at least one of the disasters discribed in the book. I certainly wish that I had know some of the very practical and simple solutions for a number of the disasters. The book is extremly humorous and a very delightful read. I loved the factoids. This book is a must for anyone who shares their home with children both large and small. I adored the book!!! Lauri Berkenkamp has the ability to write with both style and humor.

A Classic Study of the Homeless Mentally IllThe title of the book says it all. Nowhere to go, the homeless mentally ill have drifted in and out of hospitals since deinstitutionalization. And the problem is getting worse in many states, not better. When Fuller Torrey wrote this desperate plea, he wanted society to see the plight of the chronically mentally ill. Today many persons want to forget that the mentally ill need supportive homes, as do those with advanced Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Maybe those with schizophrenia or severe manic depression have not been able to contribute as much to the workings of our modern day society, but they need nursing care as Fuller Torrey outlines in this book. Why won't we as a society see this, he asks? He himself was confronted with the tragedy of mental illness within his own family, so he understands the level of care that is needed to do the job right. A classic discussion that I recommend for any public or private library.
